  • Your Vinyl Community Guncles review the 1991 Talk Talk album "Laughing Stock". This was the final album from the band and features more of an improvised sound landscape.

Loved all of your thoughts, but just as a point of clarification - this did receive an original vinyl pressing in 1991 (just not in the US). I highly recommend the original EU press - it’s a staggeringly dynamic and moving listen

I thoroughly enjoyed this review, but there was no mention of Tim Frieze Green. He was such an important part of Talk Talk from 'It's My Life' onwards. Without him, we would not have had these remarkable albums!

21:30 I, too, have a Talk Talk triptych is Spirit of Eden > Laughing Stock > Mark Hollis (solo). More of a natural trio, sonically, for me.
Fun Fact: Lee Harris and Paul Webb (TT rhythm section for most releases) are responsible for production on both of the Beth Gibbons (Portishead) solo releases - Paul on the first one, and Lee Harris on the recently-released one.
Not sure about the "what happened to Mark Hollis" bit, though... he was married and had kids by 1991, and his desire for a private life for his family was paramount. He had already lost his brother by the time of prime-era TT, wasn't looking to lose other family because of fame.
    Very good episode.

I liked Talk Talk when I got to see them live at Rock Am Ring in Germany in '86 and they absolutely blew me away - by far the most amazing band the first day - and we're talking about competing with The Waterboys, Simply Red, and The Cure. Sonically, it seemed the music was almost quadrophonic - I felt like the music moved forward and backward spacially. There were just incredible. These last three albums are must-own on my list and I have to say, Laughing Stock was the first of the three I bought and still is my favorite. Thanks for sharing this!

This is my first Vinyl Community Guncles review and I enjoyed your insightful reviews - thanks. Mark Hollis' music is in a class by itself and has profoundly affected me.
I thought the rumours of MH living as a recluse had been debunked. Instead, it's been said that he chose to retire from public life and the music industry but not from making music, which I think he continued to do privately. I also read that he had an active life pursing other interests like international motorbike racing.
Mike@Hub Tunes, I'm sorry to learn of Hollis' post Talk Talk anguish. Where did you read or learn about his mental health challenges? Can't seem to find anything on matter. Just as an FYI, there's a fantastic Talk Talk resource called Snow in Berlin.

I think Daisy tried to steal the show tonight. And succeeded. 🐾

An album you all like! Well well! Never heard a bad word about any of those Talk Talk albums. Need to investigate one of these days.

Nice video - I discovered Talk Talk a little late having been put off by the early pop-ier singles and love those later albums now. Cheers - D

The final three are masterpieces. Revisit the first two. Not a poppy as I remember. Kinda dark

Great album and reviews! I incorrectly expected Robert not to like it (sorry). Mark's brother Ed Hollis was the manager for Eddie and the Hot Rods, another great but vastly different band. - Scott

You were right about Mark Hollis, being musical genius but incredibly wrong to say he had mental problems and became a recluse and tramp. Commendably, he gave up music to bring up his family. Said he achieved everything he could in music. He moved to the English countryside, lived off his recording royalties and returned to London with his family and bought a house for £1.4m ($1.8m). He had an active social life, liked touring extensively on his motor bike in groups). So it was wrong to characterise and denigrate his character and liken him to Syd Barrett . Stick to the music review.

The gay guy is the worst. This is awful. A great album abused.

OK so you don't like the gay guy, but what about the guy wearing glasses? He's pretty cool, right? What about the guy with two arms? What do you think about him?
