The only video that shows the internals and how the release pins are supposed to work.

You made a very good job.
    1. You show that its only necessary to have a steel-wire on the top
    2. You show that the cover of the lock can be put afterwards when the lock is in and the function test was done. .
Showing all in advance, that gave me a much better understanding.
I waited too long to exchange (not knowing that it is a cheap part and that the exchange is normally easy. It took me some time to get the steering lock opened. And some more time to get the lock out. Now I am still having a problem to get the new lock in. This could be because i did move the steering when the lock was removed. at the deepest point in the hole there are two parts that can be moved and maybe does not allow the lock to get fully in. Also i bought one of the cheapest lock. Maybe i need to look for a Meyle. Thank you very much.

Thank you so much for this excellent, outstanding presentation. You did a fantastic job! Now, I have the confidence to replace the notchy tumbler on my 1989 300CE.
M-B asks for $125.US for the new tumbler with original (2) keys (Part # 126-460-02-04). You are a great guy- much appreciated! :)

Many thanks for taking the time to do these video's . I have just changed the tumbler on my 320CE. Your video really helped though as you advised it took a bit of time to wiggle it out !!Many many thanks from a fellow W124 Massive fan Cheers Rob

Ok, VERY IMPORTANT!! On the 1995 W124 250D 20 valves, you MUST put another wire or rod in to the ignition switch at 180° to the one shown in this video otherwise the SECOND clip (and there is one, belive me) will still hold the black metal shroud in place and you will NOT be able to extract the shroud and ignition switch! I have just finished this intervention at home so I know.

Well, thank you for another life saving episode! I am changing the switch at the back as well, the car will not start and there is no "click" from the starter motor solenoid (Bendix) so I suppose it is the switch behind the ignition switch...I hope so!

A note to everyone here in to not do what I did. My ignition tumbler started to feel As though it wouldn't turn smoothly. Sometimes it would turn and click very hard and I would have to jiggle the steering wheel at the same time to turn the key to make the key turn. Sometimes I would go to take the key out, and the key would be able to be removed without being in the off position all the way... I could take it out when the key was slightly turned. These are the warning signs that your tumbler is going out. I put mine off for a year and I paid the price because I had to end up cutting the tumbler and the actual lock with a diamond grinder and a diamond drill bit including the steering lock pin. It was an entire weekend and a nightmare and I never want to do that again. Change out your tumbler if this starts to happen to you immediately! I even had grief from the dealership ordering a new tumbler and key because they wanted to do the work themselves. I explained to them that I can't even get the car out of park to even use a tow truck to get it to them and that the steering wheel is locked as well. I was not wanting to drag my car out of my garage and make skid marks down my driveway to a tow truck and risk breaking other things because they're locked.

Is it possible to remove it if the key is lost? I imagine I would have to drill out the key cylinder to make it move to the notch.

  • @yogib37

I may have to do that with mine someday soon. if I put my key in and it wont turn but if I flip it it will turn easy. I called my Mercedes dealer and they are a lot of coded ingnition tumblers where you wont have two different keys to get in.. It will use the orningal one.
