It's so rare to find an AH reaction on youtube, and then it's mainly guitarists reacting with a musicians ear. So well done guys for taking that step and making an AH video reacted to by a non guitarist. AH has been my favourite player since I first heard him the mid 1980's, (one of those "What am I listening to?" moments), and once exposed to his playing, there was no turning back. 'Genius' and 'unique' are often used to describe musicians, but without a doubt Allan deserves both titles. Once again, well done for reacting to AH, and keep up the good work... Cheers Bob....

      Hi Bob,
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. He definitely changed Nick's life as well and could never look back. We're glad you enjoyed the reaction and expect many more to come -- I can't wait to honor AH by listening to his music with headphones and my undivided attention. We appreciate you stopping by and for your positive comment. Peace, Lex. :)

Allan Holdsworth was an early proponent of using the whammy bar to produce his smooth legato style. His guitar tone sounded more like a sax or violin. His solo on U.K.'s "In the dead of the night" is a personal favorite of mine. I like you expanding into other areas of music.there is so much great music out there to share!

    • @westrig180
      @westrig180 ปีที่แล้ว

Allan's Grandad was a jazz pianist, his Grandparents raised him. So he was exposed to jazz and improvisation early on. As he was learning guitar he also tried Clarinet, Sax for a short time when he was younger. Then later the Violin during his Ponty days. You need to listen to Coltrane and you will hear his influence on Allan. Not verbatim but more in how he explored established music theory worlds and then created new ones. Holdsworth did the same, which is why he improvises soo much. His SynthAx playing is remarkably woodwind based. Its akin to Jeff Berlin who was influenced by taking Trombone transcriptions over to bass, a totally perfect transistion.

He don't play guitar as guitar...but as clarinet..sax...or piano or anything. Absolutely nothing comes close what he express beyond the jazz....rock or fusion. Allan Holdsworth is UNIQUE. The One. Incomparable.

I saw this Road Games tour, with Chad Wackerman on drums, back in the day. Jeff Berlin was playing bass too - another monster musician. To this day I've never been more impressed by a live band, and mostly by how amazing Alan's live rig sounded. I mean, I expected their playing to be great, but the overall guitar sounds were incredible, achieving many of the advanced effects that I thought were studio magic right there on stage.

Hey you two. I'm new to the channel. Nick is a big Holdsworth fan. You should listen to the Level 42 album Guaranteed. Alan Holdsworth played on this album and especially the song "If You Were Mine". He plays a great solo. Not to mention that Level 42 has one of the greatest bass guitarists on the planet,Mark King. Also, the album has Jakko Jaksic on the cover( currently with King Crimson) but Alan is on the recording. Jakko was the tour guitarist on the Guaranteed tour.

The penultimate electric guitarist for many , myself included .
As a Classical Vocalist (Oratorio - Verdi) , we could certainly venture similar designations !
Whether Pavarotti , Jussi Bjorling , Enrico Caruso , Jan Peerce , Jon Vickers , Fritz Wunderlich , Franco Corelli ...et al ... Take your pick . On one level , short of breaking down the sub nano particles of subtleties , this level of undeniable mastery is reserved for a short list .
In the realm of drummers that is equally evident . Whether Buddy Rich , Dave Weckl , Vinnie Colaiuta , Dennis Chambers , Billy Cobham , Tony Williams , Tony Royster Jr. ...here again ...

I wouldn't say he was underrated. One might say under-appreciated, but when your music is as specialised as his, in that jazz-rock idiom, the audience will always be relatively small. Fans of his music are partly fans because his musical choices were uncompromising. Road Games came at a time when people like Eddie Van Halen were trying to expand his audience, by moving his playing into a more commercially viable rock direction. Of course, he wasn't having any of it. Even as a sideman in other bands, his uncompromising attitude caused issues. When he was called in by Mark King to replace the Alan Murphy in Level 42, following Murphy's premature death, he refused to play chords apparently, and would only play lead lines. A maverick and a genius.

This is a hard one to begin with. But this is the most sublimely beautiful version!
Check out Allen's "Live at Yosh's" album and in particular watch/listen to "Fred".
As you know Allan is a Guitarist's Guitarist; a Guitar God!

My boss was a fan when I worked at Magic Music in San Francisco in the 80s. He was an arranger & guitarist. His playing, once I heard it, seemed 'too much (like Charley Parker)'. ("yeah, but Weather Report?...") Anyway, I'm only occasionally drawn to virtuosity, but not these days so much. I was more interested in his synth-axe tech stuff. But HELL YES, a player's player. Best of a period.

I'm guessing there's no point in asking you to react to the In The Dead Of Night suite or anything else from the first UK album then. You must know that like the back of your hand!

You should check out the following track from Bill Bruford, also featuring Allan Holdsworth:

Would like to see less egging her on per how much you like the track and leave her be to listen and then comment on it.

OK. Excuse me guys for my English and my point of view. BUT.
Man lives with his wife and from 2006 AH is his favorite musician. From that time his wife was hearing AH in a background but NEVER had a serious interest. Even she listened Tokio Dream before. Guys. I remember then I was hearing just a few notes from AH in a first time, I just feel like WHO IS THIS GIVE ME ALL OF HIM I WANT TO KNOW ALL ABOUT HIM AND HIS MUSIC!!!
Now she listening AH and says that it's amazing. Really? You are both guys moving heads in a rhythm but it's totally clear who is understanding the music and who is just in fun time. It's OK. Many people on the AH live concerts times speak loud and laughing when he was playing. Personally you could feel free about your reactions for shure but I'm out of your channel.
    Best wishes.
