I'll Fly Away, played on mountain dulcimer by David Durrence

  • This is an old Hymnal played by David Durrence, in his usual style of playing. The setting is his back yard in Waycross, Georgia. David is playing one of the dulcimers that he has build under the name of Caney Creek Dulcimers. The tuning is DAA, a half step higher to D#A#A#. I hope you are blessed.

I just bought a mountain dulcimer at an estate sale. I have no idea how to play but plan on learning! It's a beautiful instrument! I came to You Tube to see what I could find and this was the first thing that popped up. We sang this as the closing song two years ago at my brother's funeral. It brought tears to my eyes to hear it played so beautifully and remembering that day...and has given me a goal! Thank you!

Hello from Australia..just finished watching ken burns doco on country music (I'm not even a big country music fan - hate that CMC shit). But there's something about the richness and depth of the American music tradition, that leaves me very jealous but also reaping the benefits of discovering. This style of folk music is one of those benefits. Deeply soulful and honest.

James McIntyre Hey FYI, Australia has a pretty rich folk tradition too, that draws heavily from the same sources Appalachian music does.

Half of my family line comes from Kentucky, though I've only spent a limited number of years living here. I'd never seen an 'Appalachian Dulcimer" until a 'Summer Reading Program' for my stepson did a demonstration. I had lived in England for a number of years and when I heard 'dulcimer' I didn't recognize what it was. I was more familiar with the hammered dulcimer I'd seen played at the European fairs. It's an interesting instrument for sure.

I have a goliath champion fighter with the entertainer (gladiator) background who I decided to give proficiency in a musical instrument instead of an exotic/unusual weapon.
I chose dulcimer at character creation (my only frame of reference for what a dulcimer was came from watching the cartoon “The Weekenders”), then specified mountain dulcimer after a little research, deciding he received his custom made as a gift from his boyfriend (/almost intended?). An unlucky performance roll the second time he tried to play it in our campaign meant that he tripped and dropped it, but luckily it didn’t break ^^; .

Dodger99 A bard with the entertainer background has up to 4 musical instrument proficiencies right at 1st level, so there’s probably a bard that can play the hammered dulcimer, they just don’t use it as their main on-the-road instrument / spellcasting focus.
