@@2kool4programmingschoolyeah, I know, I saw it on SM64BA (Super Mario 64 Beta Archive) and i can confirm that it was just a Creepypasta moment (well, more “Beta-ish” than creepy)
same effect on wii/wii u vc, what is interesting is that on super mario 3d all stars it does crash the game and in some cases ive even crashed the whole console
Internally, the font table has numbers before the letters, starting with character 0x00. Character in this table under index 0xA has the letter A, which is used when the selected save slot is 0. When doing this game crashing glitch, the selected slot is -1. On original N64 version, confirming the deletion dialog causes the game to crash due to out of bound writes. This also happens on the unofficial PC port of the game. The Switch Online version intercepts this out of bounds write in such a way that the game doesn't write anywhere outside of dedicated section of N64's address space when removing the save file. When the game displays "MARIO JUST REMOVED", it checks the slot being selected when the command is executed. Since the selected slot is -1, the game will substitute "9" character for display. This results in "MARIO 9 JUST REMOVED" message.
It basically had the same results, I also tested it on the Shindou Pak Taiou version, but it still was basically the same. I uploaded a video showing what they do if you are still interested though.

they really do be like "Sorry, no Developer Crash Handler for you!"
that video was a part of a creepypasta channel. the original would just freeze.

Weird. I guess that gives this an edge over Project64, the fact that this doesn't crash...

all they did was use lua scripts to try and fix it
