I think that was one of the Recy Mech HGV driver training vehicles from E sheds at Bordon in 1969/70 ... my civvy instructor was better known for being nervous and trying to steal your packed lunch than for any instructional skills. The best wrecker of all time, I later had one of the very few Scammells with the ill-considered retrofit iron-bound wooden spade anchors which was as much use as wings on a shed and certainly no better than gun planks between the rear wheels and skid pans to the front. That was in Bielefeld, from where we regularly backloaded Leyland wreckers and gun tractors to Munchengladbach on hollybone bars behind Scammells - nominally overloaded but safer than the other way round given the Leyland’s predilection for dumping its air and, inconveniently, any means of stopping.

The cycle front mudguards are the basis of "the look". Everything else follows.
