Found the Special Tool at Summit Racing for six bucks. Very good video. Thanks. Think I'll head down to the local DIY garage and pay the $10 rental for an hour on the lift. Way mo bettah than lying on the driveway fighting off my claustrophobia. I've been in Seattle for 30 years and listening to your wonderful accent reminded me of home in the Land of Real Pizza. Brought a smile to my face. Thanks.
hey i just wanted to say for the most part this video was very helpful. 2002 ford explorer xlt 4x4.. i just want to say a little more that will help others as i see comments about red clips...i had a hell of a time getting them to release fuel lines. video kinda blocks out how to get them off. look video shows how easy it is to unclip the red snaps however i will tell you once you have them open, push the red clips up. there is an opening at top of fuel line where those clips act more like a horse shoe if that makes sense. instead of pushing in i believe is term used very easily push the end you just unsnapped up toward the floor. that completely releases the clip very easily. i also used wd 40 on all parts as it made it much easier. and on the out going line you have to have a special tool found at any parts store. here in VA i went to Advanced Auto Parts and got a universal tool that was made for 3/8 line on 1 end and i think its 5/16 on the other. it was $6.99. i watched videos showing a poor mans way to release spring clip that used a Sharpie cap cut in half then split down the middle...dont waste your time. i could not get it that way. probably tried for an hour. once i got tool line was off in 5 mins put buy the metal tool. it was well worth the $6.99 and would have saved me serious time if i had from the get go....
I'm on my 3rd day trying to get that m#&@% f*÷[@&r out. Special tool ain't done s$%t but cut my hand pushing on it. Knocker Loose or WD40 is my last hope. It helped you I'm assuming. I hope it helps here as well
Thank you so much, saved me 400$. Those red clips were a pain in the ass! Also my socket didn’t fit in the 3rd bolt on the heat guard, needed to use a crescent wrench!
I wasent sure I got the silver fitting on good leading up to the engine...I have driven it a few days now, I assume if it was leaking I would be smelling gas right haha. Just a little paranoid, dosent seem to be dripping from underneath or anything. That clip like I mentioned was a bugger pushing back down on the right hand side was all, I started up the truck and wiggled the filter around and pulled on it and no leaks.
Jim on the the two redclipsonce unlocked you say push it forward are you referring to pushing the fuel lines forward while holding the filter from moving? Or push the red clips forward to disconnect the lines?
Hi Jon 'On the 2 red lines you will open the clip then push the red clip out to remove the line you will need to squeeze the clip slightly together were you opened the clip and then push the clip out slightly to remove the lines.Good luck and be careful with the gas.Let me know how you do .Jim
Did just fine I am surprised how much of a pain those clips are to release and push up yet how easily they go back together. I am really surprised that they help hold anything after locking them back down especially under high pressure. Now removing the clamp bracket and placing the same clamp bracket on the new filter was a huge pain in the ass. There is no reason for the clamp which sort of acts like a spring needs to be that tight. It caved in 2 filters.
I read in another video that first you have to remove the fuel pump relay, then run the engine out of the gas left over until the car shuts off. Is that the correct way to start?
Started to change my fuel filter but one of the two red clips were half broken (its a used car) it broke the rest of the way any way to get a new red push lock clip or repair it?
You are absolutely incorrect. Ford doesn't have the clip, Advance, Auto Zone, Pep Boys, NAPA, CARQUEST, and O'Reillys don't have anything close. Tried Dorman, Amazon and Ebay. Have not found suggestions where to buy a replacement. Ford cant match the fuel lines. So what "Big" auto parts store do you use?
Jim, I found your video through Google I was researching my 2002 Ford Explorer 4.0 bogging out while I'm driving. I had the complete exhaust system replaced cats and all 02 sensors. had my throttle body cleaned out and clean the mass air flow sensor replace the air filter and the car still hangs up while I'm driving if I'm going slow normal speed it's okay but the second I try to speed up and go around a car on the highway the car bogs out and just sounds awful and has no pick up what so ever. do you feel that could be a fuel filter issue? even with the car in park and I'm standing over top the motor while it's running and I goose the throttle body it still does the same exact thing it bogs down. very frustrated just want to get your opinion thanks bud
I'm having the issue with my 2003 explorer 4.0 did you ever figure out what's wrong? I dunno if it is the cats it says its misfiring but all the cylinders fire and it kind of of pulses before it stalls out.
Yes most Ford and Mercury's all need that tool.If you don't have one some of the big auto stores will rent it. Using the correct tool will make it very easy .Don't try some of the make it your self tools that you will see on TH-cam.Remember to release the pressure before you begin .Good luck be safe
I feel your pain. Back when I was a broke college student I was also a father, husband and mortgage payer. My ride to school each day was a '70 Mustang that had survived 10 winters in upstate NY. In other words, rust and lots of it. In the middle of winter I was under the car plugging a rust hole in the fuel tank with some sort of wonder epoxy. Eventually it held but not before a gallon or two of ice cold gasoline ran down (up?) my arm and into my arm pit. Nowadays I work on cars because I like to, not because I have to. Way mo bettah.
David Fonseca there is 2 ways you can remove the fuel pump relay and run the truck until it stalls out.The other way is to make sure the truck is off and release the pressure from under the hood on the fuel rail.
So when the cheap brittle little red clip breaks where do you buy another one? Ford does not have it. And if you suggest an autoparts store don't try Advance, AutoZone, O'Reillys, NAPA, CARQUEST or PepBoys.
hey jim,I broke the quick connect that goes to the filter, how can I fix without droping the tank,I heard I can heat up the line,is it safe to use a heat gun near the line while it is still connected to the tank?
+STEEVE DAVID Nicolas Don't use any heat. That will be very dangerous. There is a repair kit available at the big auto parts store use that kit to make your repair.
+Olivea D This is a video for replacing the brake light switch. It is a different car but the procedure is the same.Let me know how you do.th-cam.com/video/MA5WM9acm8Y/w-d-xo.html
Ford is the greatest at complicating things that don't need to be complicated. They remedy issues and corks with piling new parts and other procedures on top of it instead of fixing their design they still have poor tolerances and Sheet Metal which results in stuff breaking that no other car companies have issues with that same stuff breaking. Since the seventies they've had cold and Richmond problems with carburetors now that they have computers Ford still has cold enrichment problems. rear main seals leaking because of Warren main bearings and crank shafts due to cheap metal and poor tolerances still have issues used to be power steering pumps would moan till they finally redesigned that. blend door Motors going bad and blend door shafts breaking and gears stripping, this stuff should never go bad causing people buying new heater boxes and a $1,000 repair for a needless procedure something that should never have broken to begin with. Ford says they're back I am looking at their back while they go dump their company into the ocean please
Tempting to leave off the covers? No! Tempting to take a hacksaw to the lines and a hammer to the so called special tool? Damned skippy. I still haven't been able to remove any of the lines- it's been three days and three attempts. Perhaps if you actually showed the tool being used and the two feed lines being removed instead of just saying "Pop the clips and it magically separates". ... [fuming, disgusted, and sledgehammer at the ready]
Yeah thanks for telling Us but not showing Us. common problem on youtube, its called show and tell. Not tell and not show. You really didn’t show how to take off the red clips. But good job on the rest. Thanks

can i remove the fuel relay and turn car on for few to release press?
Shouldn't one test for leaks by turning the key on/off a few times before putting everything back together?
+BigDish101 Yes that is an excellent idea.
Easy drain ? release fuel Pressure??
V-6 or V-8 shown?

I don't do it that way at my shop but for a do it yourselfer it would be a good idea or just follow my directions step by step.
+jimthecarguy Thank you! Just asking to be safe. ;-). Good video

Good video, thank you
Started to change my fuel filter but one of the two red clips were half broken (its a used car) it broke the rest of the way any way to get a new red push lock clip or repair it?
tiana 'rome It happens all the time on older cars Any big auto store sells a repair kit for just that problem. Keep me posted how you do

Is it the same for a 2004 explorer and do I need that tool

I was wondering what the special tool is called ? I been looking for it for a while now
+Henry Paez They are called snap ring tools .E mail me Monday I'll give you the part number
jimthecarguy Jim what is the part number/size of the snap ring tool
The tool is 5/16 .If you e mail me at work Monday I can get the part number for you.
The video says I am going to show you the tool, but never does or talks about it. What is needed I can't really see how to get the line off.
It's a plastic clip that secures the line to the filter it can be removed with a screw driver.
I am changing my filter and its 2 below zero and this sucks..do this in summer. Northern Canada.

oh and thank you for the video
Thank you for stopping by the shop
DIDN'T show how it went back on like he said. Next thing was heat shield going on. Why not show how ? But you stated you would ?
Because he put the clamp on backwards and didn’t want to take everything back off to fix it. Lol
that "cover" is the heat shield....you defnitly need that cova to shelter the fuel tank & gas filter from the heat lol
You never explain why what's wrong with the gas filter.
Well a cop stop us and said our backlights will flicker and go off he didn't say which side i assumed all?
+Olivea D You will need to check it you self to see what is going on.Let me know.
+jimthecarguy OK I took it to get check with a.multipoint inspection its the brake light switch. how do I fix it myself?

No help at all from video
If this was "no help at all" I would recommend that you pay a mechanic to do the job for you
