- It was a tough pill to swallow for Alabama and Georgia. The pair of teams set to match off in the College Football Playoff final got the rough news that another team is the actual national champion. It's coming up next on a very special SEC Shorts.

Just started watching CFB huh? That is the only thing that can explain this level of ignorance. You do realize that scheduling is done WAY in advance right? Of course you don't. Alabama has scheduled tougher than 99.99% of other CFB teams. Most teams do not want to play them.

Lsux has a season of a lifetime due to Burrow and allbarn has their usual cow pasture magic but Alabama is still loaded and much to your dislike I'm afraid they are still loaded with talent and will be back next year to torment you.

@@gviruscalls7089 OK first off show me a team that doesn't play those teams. Every year they try to schedule at least one P5 outside of the SEC. They've played USC, Wisconsin, Penn State, Louisville, Florida State, Clemson & Virginia Tech. All P5 and all top 25 except Duke. Right now they have a hard time finding anyone for the marquee opening week match up. No one wants to start 0-1. I don't like the playing of directional schools anymore than any other fan but those schools depend on these paydays for their entire athletic budget. Also, Saban has been on record asking to play only FCS opponents but the other SEC schools won't go for it. They want their guaranteed wins. So all that said tell me who you think does not schedule this way?

admthrawnuru They played USC in Texas last year. That was an even trip for both and Bama blew them out 52-6. I think USC finished in the top 5, too.
When you are top dog, you don't have to schedule unnecessary teams on top of a usually grueling schedule.Most years there are plenty of top 25 wins just the way it is for Bama. But i'm sure you just discredit that too because your team sucks, and you grasp at any straw to make it seem like Bama has not deserved every bit of the success they have sustained for a decade.

I don't know a ton about college ball or how this all works, but from the comment section it seems like fans of the bigger teams that benefit from the way things are now are just a little worried their teams will have more competition and become a little lost in the shuffle. Since when do people not want the best competition possible, how does a 4 team playoff give that with so many teams out there. More teams equals more football for all of the fans to take in, how is that a bad thing? Upsets and routs are a huge part of sports, so are close exciting games, more competition in the playoffs would mean more of all of that.
Wow, a lot of hate on here against UCF. Put yourself in their place. If you go undefeated thus beating every team you play you really think you're going to say what-"Well, we should have won 100-0 in every game?" People told them play a real team and see what happens-they still won, and they beat a team that beat both teams in the NC. They have a right to claim a NC, I would if I were them and so would you. Do I think UCF was the best team in 2017? No, most likely not, but the reality is only half the teams have an actual chance which does not exist in any other sport, so for now UCF can claim a NC while Alabama has the real one anyway for last season.

We at Utah did it twice and even beat Alabama in the sugar bowl. We never tried to claim the title. Of course we wanted to go up against the gators. Now that we are in a p5 going undefeated is pretty hard. Trying to stay healthy and compete week in and week out against better opponents, better coaching staffs is hard. Beating teams ranked 15-25 between broke out weeks is good, but is way easier than playing back to back to back real competition. Put UCF in any p5 conference and they will not make it through the year undefeated. Go through the p5 conferences and play the schedule and then come back. We beat p5s, we beat p5s! Yeah well so does the p5 teams. They usually win at least 8 and have to play a conference championship making it 9. Beat #1 or #2 in a p5, play 7 more with at least 4 of those having winning records. You will find your players, staff, wore out. You will find yourself playing with back ups, and you will find out how hard it really is!

Only USC and Wisconsin would be considered 'good' football teams...and none of these teams were close to winning their conference championships.
For a team that makes the dynasty claim so much...and claims to be almost NFL level talent...I would be very happy to see them drop the FCS school normally on the schedule in favor of another power-5 opponent. Then we might have a better chance at getting a good out of conference matchup for Alabama.
It is hard having to explain to my Bammer friends why my rankings of 'most accomplished team' doesn't include Alabama until late in the season because their out of conference schedule ended up being weak.

Alabama is 8 - 3 in the playoffs and has won 3 national championships in the playoff era. Alabama has won 6 national championships in 12 years. That is not a claim. That is a dynasty.
Since 2011 Alabama has had 30 first round draft picks. That is not a claim. That is a FACT.

I am not arguing that Alabama is a bad team. Merely saying that I would love to see Alabama play a harder schedule. After all, greatness should be given opportunities to show greatness.
I have similar gripes with other NCAA football powers as well. Most teams play only one or two actually good teams per year.

Central Florida is a good team and I am sure the better teams in the so called Group of Five are better than many teams in the Power Five Conferences. Troy beat LSU who beat Syracuse who beat Clemson and I imagine than in a given year a Group of Five team might be the best team in the country, but I don’t think Central Florida (as good as they are) is quite equal to Alabama or Georgia.

I have watched a ton of SEC and UCF games. Auburn did not bring its best game, but neither did UCF.
I agree with that 100%. In a one game scenario I agree. But they could not survive a major conference grind. They do not have the quality of depth to do so.
I agree with that. I think what separates UCF from Auburn is the depth. I think the starting squads when both teams are healthy are pretty equal in quality. UCF just doesn't have a reservoir of linemen that bigger programs can pull from.
The sad thing, is the fact that i know about 10 alabama fans that had a similar reaction to central Florida claiming a title--despite that fact that a big portion of Alabama's NC's were CLAIMED ALSO.

You dont split a title when there was a head to head matchup between the two teams that "share" the title. USC and Bama. Thats just dumb. 1941 was simply inexplicable. That was a 3 loss team that lost to Vanderbilt lol. Ranked like 20th in the country or whatever.

I've seen a lot of dumb things in my time as a football fan. 2nd and 26, Texas A@M not getting into the playoffs in 2020, Notre Dame being allowed into the National Championship in 2012, Mark Right lasting after 3013, but one of if not the dumbest, was UCF thinking they would actual be remembered as the 2017 NCAA champions and thinking they could beat Georgia or Alabama. Although I think that UCF should've been in the playoffs that year, I think Georgia or Bama would've masscared them. "No, I don't think you understand. There's no version of this where you come out on top." is what Tony Stark would've said to UCF. Oklahoma and Clemson probably would've crushed them. I know they were undeafeated, but it's rare to see an undeafeated team win it all.

No, no group of 5 team should EVER be in. You cannot have a schedule full of cupcakes and expect to get in. Every team on their schedule is circled as a automatic win on most of the elite teams schedule, and you know that. There will be a upset every once in a blue moon. For every Boise State against Oklahoma in the BCS, we had 10 Hawaii vs Georgia. Those teams just do not have the depth and the same quality of Athletes. For the most part, most of those players are not even recruited that much by the big boys. There is no hypocrisy. It is just what it is, the truth.

Honestly, Alabama looked terrible on offense. Before changing QBs it was abysmal going against a defense that gave up what? 48 points to Oklahoma? After the QB change it got better, but he still made a ton of mistakes taking huge sacks and throwing an INT. No one should walk away from having watched that game and think.... Tommy Williams you can be sick all you want but the truth is still the truth. UCF is not, nor will they ever be a championship team. They are in a stepping stone conference that plays a bunch of nobody's. You would think that at the college level, people would be educated enough to know that everyone doesn't get a trophy. You earn it like everyone else.
I'm rather healthy, actually. And I'm not taking claim in this 'UCF is the national champ', although I love the idea behind it as a protest and love the media frenzy. Just last week Auburn forums were lit up with "we lose the SEC Champ, now have to play a high school team no one has heard of?" Now people with the same issue will know that UCF team. Felt like everyone forgot about our 10 point feat as a +15 underdog to Baylor in the fiesta bowl a few years ago, so this will etch our logo in a bit more.

Tommy Williams a protest to what exactly? This playoff system was supposed to keep this from happening.... an all SEC championship. Now the same people that were all for it at the beginning are claiming the system is rigged. You may have a bright future but unfortunately it won't be an undefeated one in an actual conference. My so called bubble hasn't popped at all. I'm a realist. Playing nobody all year and getting an occasional good win does not make you a national contender.
Protest to eliminate bias, force voters to watch games out of their beloved conferences. There is a 100% chance that UCF will be undefeated in any conference with infinite time; given what they have done in this short amount of time (youngest to win a BCS bowl, then youngest to win a NY6 bowl), I'm confident they will be ok in any conference. Look at Mizzou/TA&M when they moved to the SEC. Doubted by all, and they were among the best for their first couple of seasons. UCF should have scheduled Mercer, like Alabama did, to strengthen their OOC SOS. Speaking of road games, 'Bama played only 4 road games all year and 1 neutral site game. Real tough schedule when you only play 4 road games all year and none OOC.

You realize that playing in one of the toughest conferences in football, makes your schedule tough as is. You realize that there is a marquee matchup to open the season EVERY year, when most schools play their " Mercer's" then. You realize that Bama has backed it up against those opponents EVERY year.They have been ranked number 1 at some point in the season EVERY year for a decade. The NFL draft speaks for itself on how much talent has rolled through Tuscaloosa for a decade. So state facts instead of the tired old drivel that most spout to try and make a elite team seem unworthy.
Auburn, 'Bama, etc. p*ssied out when asked to schedule home and home. The SEC absolutely can't play OOC away from home, with few exceptions. Florida, for example, went decades before they finally played a road OOC game on the road. The SEC only schedules warm weather games to begin with (I know UCF is warm weather too but Cincy is not). That's because their QBs suck in cold weather and is the reason you seen none play QB in the NFL cold weather teams and hardly ever see a QB from the SEC to begin with.
Perhaps, but it was the best on 'Bama's schedule! UCF played 9 teams that went bowling, while Alabama has played just 8 teams that were bowl eligible. So who played the weak schedule?

Central Florida clobbered Auburn who by the way defeated Alabama. So yes they deserve a SHARE of the National Championship. Scott Frost (UCF Coach) defeated Peyton Manning and the Tennessee Volunteers 42-17. So it's highway robbery if they aren't considered National Champions!
