Who is here in 2023? haha I just purchased this camera for dirt cheap now that these cameras are popular again amongst us millennials! this video was very helpful and easy to understand. I now know how to use all the settings, thank you so much Graham!
I found this camera for 5 bucks at a swamp meet 😂 im a teen and digital cameras are becoming very popular within us but i find the camera very confusing like my screen keeps saying “Memory card error”
With these excellent video camera tutorials, there is no need for an owners manual! Great job as usual Graham. You provide an invaluable service to the photographic community at large.
Thank you, Mr.Houghton. This is one of the best tutorials I've seen on TH-cam. I have a Powershot xs 500 is, and this tutorial was brilliant. I'm looking forward to knowing my camera better and taking better shots.
I just purchased the camera 2 months ago and still have to learn how to use the other options besides "auto" even though some great shots have been taken in that mode. Saving this video to my favorites subscribed, too. It's the first time I have a good camera in my hands with so many settings and it's confusing for me, but little by little I'll learn the most I can from these videos! Thanks for posting them.
Thank you! My husband gifted me with a HS520 for Christmas and I am just now getting around to playing with it. I watched your video with the camera in hand. Although I have had other cameras in the past, I never got around to learning what each icon meant or did. Your video is so clear and your explanations are very helpful, I'm hopeful that my photos will improve with this new knowledge. I'm off to watch Part 2. Again, thank you very much!
I just brought a used Canon elph 110HS. Love it for video. Your instructions saved me so much time and drama since I have no manual for this camera. Thank. you so much for your time and help !
WHAT A GENIUS, GENIUS,GENIUS YOU ARE WITH EXPLAINING THE FULL DETAILS AS TO ALL THE FEATURES THIS CAMERA HAS THEN SOME, THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS NICE & CLEARLY TO UNDER STAND, THIS WAS VERY HELPFUL IN DEED, DO YOU WORK FOR CANON THE CAMERA COMPANY OR DO YOU WORK FOR SOME KIND OF CAMERA COMPANY, YOU NAILED THIS THE T OR I GIVE THIS A TEN, TOTALLY OUT STANDING, IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THEN THIS, YOU SHOULD BE MAKING COMMERCIALS FOR CANON THE CAMERA COMPANY & THEY WOULD PAY YOU FAIRLY WELL IN DEED, I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO PART 2 HOPEFULLY THAT WILL BE REAL SOON. GOD BLESS YOU.
Thanks so much for this series of videos they have been a great help to me as I just got the SX260 HS and your videos have helped me to get the most out it.
Sir... ur videos have been a great help. I bought the canon sx510 hs n was confused with some settings. U made it all clear! P.S. kudos to ur patience! :)
I doubt there is a better camera for the money. I have had full size dslr and slr Nikons all my life. Never a problem and they all produce excellent pictures. I no longer take pictures professionally, so I looked into a light weight camera that at least had most of the bells and whistles. This one fits the bill beautifully. My only complaint would be no viewfinder. Very hard to see the picture in bright sunlight:- amzn.to/1qupYX1
Fantastic with someone not rushing through but talks slow and points. I went from having a lot of unfocused pics to focused with that last tip with the square. Big THANK YOU!
I learned so much from this video. I just purchased a Canon SX260 and I also have a SX500. Your video is helpful with both cameras. I will watch iit a few more times. Thank you Graham!
I purchase a Canon SX50 SH about a month ago, since then I have been taking pictures on Auto mode only. I read the PDF manual seeking guidance to use the other modes but it was of no help. I search the Web without luck. I was about to give up when I came across this video. It is fantastic, it is realy healpfull. Prior to this video I did not even know the meaning of the icons appearing on the screen. I will definately look at the other videos. thanks for this great help.
Shame you wasn't a Canon Man, I have just got myself a Canon G7X & this is the closet in depth video on the web that I could find that actually explains all the settings like you do.
I have had my canon powershot sx260hs for many years and have gotten good photos with auto, but looking to learn how to take better photos and this was a great instructional video and was super easy to follow, thank you!
I've already got this camera and have picked up a some very useful tips from the video. Thankyou. I shall be testing the hold and review and setting of focus next time I use the camera. Those boxes were always a mystery to me.
Hi thanks Sharon, there are lots of things to get used too, P mode gives you some creative freedom, then A follwed by full manual operation. Good luck and thanks for the comments.
Thanks your videos have been a great help! I just purchased the Powershot sx720hs which has a lot of the settings you explain the sx720hs does have different settings but your videos at least got me started Thanks again
This is pretty good camera. I purchased mine about a year ago and put it in the safe and forgot about it. Been using a Fuji FinePiz S1500. They are pretty close in features Found your video and am glad I did. No Instruction manual 😁 Its NOT a DSLR like the SX40. I got mine for some Lunar , Milky Way and Afocal astrophotography through my Bresser Aurora 6" reflector telescope Thank you for explaining the basics.
I just started watching this video and it's so helpful! I should have used this long ago. Will be learning how to use my camera to it's full potential! Thanks so much!
Hi Graham, Thanks for this video. I was searching for a video to help me better utilize the capabilities of my new Powershot SX530HS and I came across your video. Although it isn't a perfect correspondence, it is close enough to be immensely useful. Just wanted to leave a note of thanks.
Excellent (again). From your info here I changed several setting on my Canon...esp. my LCD screen was too bright and caused some confusion about exposure. You kindly answered a question I had when considering the Panasonic LUMIX® ZS30. I got Canon SX280 instead, just great!! All these features you mention here - they're really like a Miracle & I just add the 'build quality' is fantastic..it's not 'plastic junk' -- feels solid and great...um, and I use tiny tripod head- makes it easier to hold.
Hi yes I have the CHDK installed on my sx240 and it does add some interesting features. It does take some getting used to the way the menu works but does open up the camera for some interesting opportunities. I might consider a run through video of this feature.
Got a sx620 and took it overseas .. was not impressed so i shelved it and got another cam. My wife took the canon and took most awesome shots. I realized it must be me ..and it was . Thank you sir advice is short and to the point .
It depend in which mode the camera is set to, In Auto mode the right hand button on the 4 way job button is used to turn the flash between off or auto. In Av and Tv modes the same button is used again for turning on or off or setting the synchro mode in Tv mode. Let me know if you still can't turn it on, Graham
Thanks for the comment. I guess Canon thought there were enough users to warrant a dedicated sports and Landscape mode on the actual control dial ( as with a lot of other manufacturers) As far as the easy mode goes, Sony also put this on some of their compact cameras I guess it was designed for complete novices who don't want to learn any of the settings needed even to get auto mode set up. Maybe they should just do a camera with a power on/off and shutter release for these people!
Great getting started and review video... I still love my Canon SX230 especially for nighttime photography. I will be using it tonight to photograph the Aurora in Alaska. How do I change the ISO to 1600 when it is in Manual mode? TIA
The price of this has now tumbled due to the sx280 coming to the street. It has a lot of creative features which will allow you to progress from full auto to full manual as your knowledge of photography improves and the image quality is very good.
Thank you so much! Very helpful! I usually left my camara on auto because whenever i left it with the camara sign i notice that the photos are blurry:(
The camera should not shut off until the power conservation kicks in. Is you battery fully charged? The power saver normally is set to about 2 minutes until the lcd turns off and the camera goes into a sleep mode.
Super helpful video!! Technology is not my deal but a new fact of life. This video made it so clear and easy to understand my new camera! Thank you for your help! =)
i bought an SX270HS last week and you had helped out a whole lot. it is a lot easier to follow your step by step instructions than the book ( in which i did not get in my camera box. i had looked at your instructions and i was wondering , with each program setting , if i not like the settings , would i have to RESET by default. and start over ?
Its not necessary to reset the camera. With any adjustment you make you can always use the controls to get back to normal settings so for example if you change colours in mycolour you can always set them back to normal by just dialing them back to the normal position.
hi Graham happy new year to you thank you for your brilliant videos for this camera been so helpful to a novice like me ;), question ive got is there any way of charging the battery without removing the battery from the camera? as im thinking if you have to remove the battery will you lose the date/time etc? TIA :)
I have just begun using a Canon Powershot S110 and have been struggling with the camera automatically changing the light in my image when I would not like it to. Is there a way to make it so that the camera doesn't auto adjust to a different light? Thank you for the helpful content within the video as well!
Hi - I havent watched your video fully, but I hope you can help. I have a Canon SX710, and I like to film concerts. I filmed one last week, but the volume was distorted. I tried to see if I could fix the distortion with Power Director/Wave Editor. Some guy on You Tube Power Director said I should set the level to 12db to be safe. Do you know how to do this, or do you have any recommendations. I will be filming another concert in 4 days time, so I hope you can help. Thanks
There is a lot of soul searching needed between these 2 cameras ( I have the TZ30 and SX240) as it really depends on your intended use. For still there is very little in it but there are more customisable options with the SX camera for sharpness, contrast and saturation. There is no control in the TZ. For video I prefer the TZ especially as all the arty filters work in video whereas only a few work in the SX. The SX has the nice slomo video but how many times would you use it? Overall SX for me
Hi ...I realize the same controls which apply to an image, gets reverted back to normal while shooting a video ? Also some effects like fisheye also doesnt apply to video ? Could u please guide, how to manually adjust the video settings? Great video for a beginner like me ..Thanks a lot !!
Hi Graham, I’ve had the Canon PowerShot sx730hs for a few days now & slowly getting used to it but I cannot find a Landscape Setting on it anywhere, it was bought as we are going on holiday to Austria & so a lot of the photos I take will be of Mountains, Lakes etc .... Obviously I realise I can use the camera in Auto mode but with any other cameras I’ve had I’ve always liked using the different scene modes .... It’s got the usual Portrait, Sports, Toy Camera, Fish Eye etc etc options on it but no Landscape option for Scenery .... So my question is, what setting would you recommend I use for shooting Scenery? Thank you ....
I didn't realize that my camera is not the same as yours in this video. Mine is Sx210IS. I still need to know if there are functions that I can go to to correct what I'm trying to do. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
Hi Graham, I'm looking to change my Lumix TZ 10 for a Canon SX50 HS. I'm getting fed up with the dust getting into the lens. Your help was great but, it does get tedious, taking it apart.
Yes, it's fully charged. I thought I must've clicked a wrong setting somewhere, but I was able to take several pics in a row without it happening. But sometimes I'll snap a pic, and it immediately shuts off w/o the pic saving. I also had taken a few pics, and they disappeared even though I was able to review them at one point. Then a little later they were gone. I didn't erase them. Like I said this is brand new so I'm a bit worried. Thanks!
Do you have a video on the canon SX50hs? It's my first camera that isn't just a point and shot, I need to learn all the settings it's a little over whelming! thanks
Thanks for your comment. With this type of camera it is probably not possible to capture the shower as the long exposure times are not sufficient to capture the few seconds of streak which only occur at best every minute or so.
Its the same os the Sx220 with GPS. I was very impressed with my SX220 and love the wide format screen for hd video recording. Plenty of creative control with the camera as well. A good price well worth it.
hi graham, Many thanks for getting this project /tutorial started. there are quite a few differences of 240 to the 220HS, as you say the scene modes - there doesnt seem to be a sport or Landscape on the 240HS, and why have they got some of them on the Dial instead of in-mode? It beats me. Why have Canon also put an Easy mode on it too, isnt Auto Mode easy enough? Just a few gripes so far, as well of course the dial itself which I think is a bit cumbersome to turn. Keep up the good work.
Hi, as a student in Barcelona for a year this is a great video for understanding my canon powershot :) do you know how to stitch the panoramic shots together though?
most image editing programs have this facility to stitch the images together automatically or there is a free microsoft program which will do this research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/groups/ivm/ICE
Thanks for all the great tips. I bought the SX260 and just now starting snapping some pics. However, sometimes as soon as I take a pic the camera immediately shuts off. I hope you can tell me why that might be. It would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I got a question and I hope for a reply please. I have the Canon SX540, it isn’t the flash light I am asking about (on top of the camera) it is on the left of the camera, a circular flash like thing, quite small. Every time I take a photo it flashes when I take a photo and it isn’t even the flashlight on the top? Help
Hi I am looking to purchase the canon power shot sx510 hs or similar. When video recording is it possible to set the length of the recording for example 20 or 30 seconds in any way? Kind regards Ian
Hi Graham, Thank you for uploading really great and informative videos, I enjoy watching them, I am curious to know have you ever installed and used the chdk (canon hack development kit) on your canon powershots? It seems to be a great addition to the camera and gives more DSLR type functions It would be great if you could put up a tutorial on installing it and how to use it for this particular camera (sx220hs) Many thanks Rory,
Hi Graham, I am in the midst of choosing a new camera. Very undecisive on choosing either Canon PowerShot SX260 HS vs Panasonic Lumix TZ30 (ZS20). One thing for Canon SX260 is Max shutter speed 1/3200 whereas TZ30 has higher continuos drive and Flash range than SX260. Can you please advise which is your preference personally ? Thank you ~ Bee
Who is here in 2023? haha I just purchased this camera for dirt cheap now that these cameras are popular again amongst us millennials! this video was very helpful and easy to understand. I now know how to use all the settings, thank you so much Graham!
Right here! Bought this at a yard sale for $5 with a busted screen. Got a NOS LCD off ebay and replaced it - good as new!

Excellently structured tutorial. Logic very similar to the menus on the HS50SX so still relevant. I'd say a "must read".

In europe it is limited to 29minutes and 59seconds I'm not sure if the limit is removed elsewhere.
Thanks for your comment. With this type of camera it is probably not possible to capture the shower as the long exposure times are not sufficient to capture the few seconds of streak which only occur at best every minute or so.
Can you do one on the g9 power shot? Not the g9x. ITS PROBABLY HARD to find because it's an old camera but it gets the job done

hi graham,
Many thanks for getting this project /tutorial started. there are quite a few differences of 240 to the 220HS, as you say the scene modes - there doesnt seem to be a sport or Landscape on the 240HS, and why have they got some of them on the Dial instead of in-mode?
Thanks!
Great tutorials thank you very much sir.
Thankyooouww!
I've got this camera for over a year now, but some things I didn't know!
Hi Sharon, I tried the SX50 but didn't get along with it hence the reason I bought the FZ200 camera from Panasonic
Thanks for the update, good luck with the new camera. Graham
Help
Would you be doing a review/tutorial on the canon sx280 anytime soon? This video was very helpful thank you
I haven't planned on purchasing the 280 but I would expect the menus and options to be very similar
I'm using the 280, and found this video to be extremely helpful. I can't wait to follow up with the next in the series. Many thanks!
tykle666 thank you i hope you learn something from the other parts in this series as well.
Thanks for the comment, I appreciate the response to the video.
Thank you for the feedback, appreciated
Hi I am looking to purchase the canon power shot sx510 hs or similar. When video recording is it possible to set the length of the recording for example 20 or 30 seconds in any way?
Kind regards
Ian
Hi Graham,
Thank you for uploading really great and informative videos, I enjoy watching them, I am curious to know have you ever installed and used the chdk (canon hack development kit) on your canon powershots?
It seems to be a great addition to the camera and gives more DSLR type functions
It would be great if you could put up a tutorial on installing it and how to use it for this particular
camera (sx220hs)
Many thanks
Rory,
Appreciate your comment thank you
Hi Graham,
I am in the midst of choosing a new camera.
Very undecisive on choosing either Canon PowerShot SX260 HS vs Panasonic Lumix TZ30 (ZS20).
One thing for Canon SX260 is Max shutter speed 1/3200 whereas TZ30 has higher continuos drive and Flash range
than SX260.
Can you please advise which is your preference personally ?
Thank you ~ Bee
Appreciate the comment, thank you
