I pay almost everything via online bill pay, get most on paper (am going to change that now that I don't have a business), and twice a month log in, reconcile accounts, and review the bill pay screen with all my pay-to accounts listed to ensure each company has a scheduled payment displayed. Since I've been doing this, I have never missed paying a bill.
Not a week goes by where I don't have to re-mail items that are in my mail box and are not for me, including Prescriptions!. I had to learn this lesson the hard was when my new mortgage bill and HOA bill did not arrive and the payments took a month - yup - a month to get to the bill sender. Everything I do now is on line; I pay the bills on line, I get notice that a bill is due, and I print out the bill for my records. What is really sad is that UPS is in cahoots with the USPS and my UPS packages now go missing even with tracking.
I have transitioned everything I can to paperless delivery. The only thing I get in my mailbox is either junk mail or the straggler items I have not yet transitioned to paperless delivery. I did this after seeing local news stories about mail backing up and essentially stopping at the new mail facilities. Replace Louis DeJoy ASAP!
I agree and long ago switched to e billing. With Trump returning to office, DeJoy is probably here to stay. They are breaking the post office on purpose in order to privatize it.

Paying bills: I have on my PC, a spreadsheet as a calendar. I spend about an hour or more once a year setting it up. Going through each month marking anything important. Birthdays, as well as due dates for bills. And I look at that calendar each and every day and several times a day. That calendar has "everything on it". And use as much space as needed. That's replaces paper calendars because paper don't have enough space to write everything. The spreadsheet expands as you need it. If I open that calendar on Tuesday morning, and see that a bill is due in a week. I check to see if it has been paid and if not, why not? The only problem is that AT&T Uverse shuts down so often that I might not get online for a couple hours. But as I said. I view that calendar multiple times a day. PC is not shut off during the day. It takes but a second to sit down and click and less than a minute to look at it.
I also have a ton of other stuff on the PC. Separate spreadsheets of every expense, like groceries. Spreadsheets of all income and expenses. That almost auto keeps a net worth on a daily basis. But that does take time and might not work for everyone. So that I can see at a glance if I"m overspending or doing something wrong and what I'm doing right.

Houston is a disaster. In much of USA we confuse zoning with planning. Zoning is fine but our lack of Community and Regional Planning makes many places terrible to live in. Do we want livable places or messes of misery? The Dutch used have car clogged cities but in 1970s decided enough children have died. Now the Netherlands is a very livable place where design and planning are used to slow cars down and reduce them in cities. New York is taking the fee approach. Dumb.
100% agree on zoning. Starting with the Obama administration, the feds began pressuring cities to put low cost housing in wealthier areas. Recently a new neighborhood with expensive homes in my city had the zoning on undeveloped land next to it changed to permit low cost, high density housing. The residents fought it, but the city caved to the feds under threat of losing ALL fed housing funds. So the values in that neighborhood took a big hit, totally unfair to the residents that bought under the old zoning rules.
Clark, did you hear, the TSP is going to let people covert tradition funds to Roth funds in 2026? They will have to pay the tax from money out side of the TSP. But an option at least.
California (or any other place with expensive real estate). If you can't afford to live there, either add more value to your skills/credentials/experience so you can earn more or don't live there. There are almost infinite places in the USA where you can live for far less than California. “Unfortunately, the real minimum wage is always zero, regardless of the laws, and that is the wage that many workers receive in the wake of the creation or escalation of a government-mandated minimum wage, because they lose their jobs or fail to find jobs when they enter the labor force. Making it illegal to pay less than a given amount does not make a worker’s productivity worth that amount-and, if it is not, that worker is unlikely to be employed.” ― Thomas Sowell, Basic Economics: A Citizen's Guide to the Economy
