  • How to Get Past Your Jitters and Start Training!
So, you’ve decided to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu... but you’re feeling anxious about walking into the gym for the first time? Don’t worry-most people think BJJ is all about crazy submissions and intense rolls, but the real fight is overcoming that pre-class anxiety. In this video, we’ll break down how to overcome the fears that hold you back and make sure your first day on the mats is way less terrifying. 🥋
🚨Why Is Starting BJJ So Nerve-Wracking?🚨
It’s totally normal to feel that first-day jitters. Whether it’s worrying about looking awkward, fearing you’re not fit enough, or just dreading the unknown, you're not alone. Trust me-I felt the same way when I first started BJJ, and I was coming in after years of CrossFit, half-marathons, and endurance swims! Spoiler alert: I still got winded after my first roll. 😅
In this video, we’ll talk about the common fears beginners have:
“I don’t want to look stupid”-Spoiler: No one is judging you! Everyone is too busy learning and working on their own game.
“What if I get hurt?”-Totally valid concern, but beginner classes focus on safety and basics, so you’re in good hands.
“Am I fit enough?”-Guess what? BJJ is one of the best ways to get fit, so don’t stress about your current fitness level.
🏆 The Reality of Your First Day on the Mats 🏆
Don’t expect to walk in and channel your inner BJJ black belt. Starting BJJ is all about embracing the journey, and most gyms love welcoming beginners. Higher belts enjoy helping new people, and no one expects you to have everything figured out on Day One.
We’ll dive into what your first class will look like-warm-ups, techniques, and light sparring. Don’t worry; you’re not going into full-on Mortal Kombat mode right away. Your goal for that first day is super simple: just show up.
🧘‍♂️ Mental Hacks to Beat That BJJ Anxiety 🧘‍♂️
How do you walk in with confidence? Here are some practical tips to keep your nerves in check:
Bring a friend-Having a buddy makes everything less intimidating.
Visit the gym ahead of time-Watch a class or say hi to the instructor. Familiarity breeds comfort.
Ask questions-Coaches love when beginners are engaged. They want to make your experience as smooth as possible.
Ease into it-You don’t have to go 100% on your first day. Take it slow and let yourself acclimate.
💥 Push Through Anxiety & Reap the Benefits of BJJ 💥
The hardest part is starting, but once you do, you’ll gain confidence-not just in BJJ, but in life. Physically, you'll get stronger, more flexible, and better conditioned. Mentally, you'll learn to stay calm under pressure-both on and off the mats. And the best part? You'll find an awesome community of like-minded people who are there to support you on your journey.
    📈 Consistency Is Key 📈
To really kick that anxiety to the curb, just keep showing up. The more you train, the more natural it feels. Celebrate every little win, and don’t stress about perfection-progress is the name of the game. Remember, the BJJ journey is long, but that’s the beauty of it: you’re constantly improving, one step at a time.
So hit that play button, and let’s conquer that anxiety together! If you’re ready to start BJJ or just looking to build confidence, this video is for you. 👊

I just started myself and for some reason I have insane anxiety about going to class. Like everyone there is awesome and patient, the instructor is a great teacher, but I just feel like I'm too old to start, even though I'm only 19 and I completely understand that I'm by no means too old. I guess that's still just the anxiety trying to get me back in the house and to stay in my comfort zone, guess I just have to man up lol.

100%, our mind is always going to find some excuse not to do it. But the more you keep going, the less that happens. I used to try invite excuses not to go. I did the same when i first started working out. I still to it with my job 🤣

I just started bjj and found this helpful. I roll with some fairly seasoned guys and feel that I'm bothering them, taking away their training time when they have to be with me, as I really know very little. To me, that's the worst part....

Every body is different but personally I love having a roll with the new people. I enjoy helping others figure it out. But I definitely spread them inbetween rolls with other coloured belts. Always remember they were once on your position so it won't be a problem
