The fact that he can make a movie so disturbing and terrifying without showing anything but the dancers going crazy and loud energetic EDM music blaring for most of the time just proves this guy is a genius of a filmmaker.

Well kinda... He also showed a child eating drugs, then put in a dark closed electric box by his drugged mother and while she tries to find keys to unlock and rescue him he dies from an electricity. Oh yeah, and all of this is accompanied by his screams...

it is so cute and relieving that despite being a polemic filmaker gaspar still gives actors the power to choose wether if they want to be naked in a scene, or want to kiss someone, or even change their character's name, we really live in an era where tolerance in movie making enviroments matter and everyone should be able to feel safe and comfortable even when taking part in something that isn't necesarilly a light hearted production

This movie left me with an unforgettable memory, to the point that I promised myself that I would not watch it again before a couple of years, ya know, to keep the magic alive. I've been a fan of creepy movies for, well, just like forever, and this very one kept me fascinated from the beginning to the very end. Most of the people would probably feel sick while watching this and eventually leave the room, but I was just like, PLEASE, GIVE ME MORE, I DON'T WANT THIS TO END !!!!

Jonathan, I completely agree with you. I think it's a film that will make you uncomfortable even as a passing reference because if you're truly invested in it, there is hardly anything you will ever encounter like this. Irreversible was great but since I was already of the some of its insanity, I wasn't really caught off-guard. But I had no idea what I was going to face in this case. And the sheer audacity and courage of the filmmaker to go down the gallows and bring you an experience that's so vivid, raw and indigestible. For me, it's film I would watch again cowering and wanting to protect myself because beyond all the conspicuous politics it talks about, it is a story of human extremity and antagonism. It may appear as yet another French exercise at shock and danger but if you surrender to it, you may understand what really the point of the film is. I'm not sure if it was all consciously designed - the subtext and all its thesis - but regardless of what's been put into it through design, it is indeed scary to know that there's a filmmaker now who is aware of the such low human points. That's where, I guess, the beauty comes from. It's a film I can never watch again in its entirety.

Gaspar does a movie = Must stee. Pure genius.
Imagine if he would've had a multimillion dollar budget and a year or two instead of two weeks to film it. It could've been his best film. It's definitely way better than Love but it can't compete with Enter the Void.

Oh fuck off, don't be pretentious. Von Trier is inattentive to his surroundings, he has merit, yes, but that usually enters to the unique techniques displayed in his films, which still become tedious not long after. Noé I find to be a lot more talented, but I still find his films to occasionally just be contemptuous drivelling foley, that is crammed into my system for the soul purpose of bad taste. Try Tarkvosky or Bela Tarr, I don't know, maybe even Edward Yang, just cleanse your intellect with practical art.

I love this film, especially the dance scenes. I actually wish he had pushed the violence more. But one thing - if I were at a party with good looking young people and fantastic music and someone spiked the sangria with LSD, I don’t think I would be mad. I think I would have fun with it.
they knew each other, were coworkers and all of them had some kind of "beef". Also they were drugged against their will, I think anyone would freak out
You will never have fun if you are drugged against your will. It must be freaky on LSD, though totally not that extreme as in the movie :'D

This movie was a real disappointment for me. Just something out to shock, more of a trope-filled cliché drug horror movie compared to the things he made before. But hey, kids seem to like it and be freaked out by it so who cares.
How do you feel about Enter The Void?
@ It's a very different movie and when I first saw it I was really stoked about the slow pace and floaty atmosphere. The topic of loneliness is also executed very well but not a new one, let alone exploring this theme in an Asian megalopolis. As a teen I loved it but I haven't felt the need to watch it again without being on drugs myself and I feel that Climax might be such a movie as well - it'd be alot better under a certain influence than watching it sober.

In what way is Climax a 'trope-filled cliché' movie? You must have an absolutely horrible time with blockbuster movies if you believe that to be a run-of-the-mill film.
@@Adultguj You're quite right that I don't enjoy blockbuster movies exactly because they are amazingly predictable. Thanks for the compliment.
This movie is very run-of-the-mill for me because it employs many tropes found in teen horror flicks: someone spiked the group into having drugs, they all freak out, they lock themselves up or someone else gets locked up, they kill each other and die, yadda yadda. The only "new" thing here is the technique, mainly the sound being overtly present and how it's convincingly edited into a single take, however I don't like single take movies as much if it's just for the sake of doing a single take, and this is where I started grinding my gears. I'm quite the fan of arthouse cinéma and once you get used to the language many "auteurs" employ for art cinéma, you start to notice some of these "unusual" techniques are very common and even pretentious, ie people use these techniques to promote themselves as being alternative, creative, outside-of-the-box, you get what I mean. Gaspar Noé has become very generic because he sticks to his formula: naturalistic filmmaking that is fueled by drugs and extrapolates what should be considered an existential experience. I'm not happy to announce there are B-Movies out there that gave me more satisfaction than Climax but we need to be honest about the guy being a one trick pony and his lack of self-awareness make his movies suffer creatively.
I will offer Midsommar as a counterargument. Yes, I'm aware this movie is also very trope-filled, but despite that the movie offers something fresh and new and the tropes only remain at the surface once you dive into it. The story itself, a protagonist who clearly is depressed and mourning, finds herself a new home where her so-called friends simply die. Not only that, it's a horror movie where drugs have a very positive effect and death is seen as an opportunity for rebirth. This movie is eerily positive in its message and that's just amazing to witness.

Irreversible at least had some kind of a moral right ? By the end, there was a message, regardless of it being incredibly dark. At least one could find an angle from which to gain from seeing Irreversible…

The whole second part of the movie is just about waiting for something to happen… And until the last freaking second… There’s no resolution, nothing of value waiting for us to see…

@@undetected2088 Usually, the best art doesn't supply you with a message (i.e. a simplification of reality). It does, though, supply tools with which to think and analyze your environment.
I think it was simply what he was going for just shock value nothing deeper and you can sense that from the interview here when he says “let’s just make a movie”

@@breadandroses7 The black dancers draw a swastika on the head of one white guy and they rubbed themselves with cream to look more white i guess - but apart from that i think the conflicts were distributed quite evenly.

@@sebastianb.2894 if you consider the political nature of the movie in that its about how mistrust and unexpected chaos creates toxic divisions between people, it makes perfect sense in the story
The racism scene made perfect sense n showed how the drug projects the underlying perspective of the black dancers. Take your pc shit elsewhere. You guys would ruin everything.
