With all the talk of how difficult it is to set up this technique, I believe that may be a useful application. What better time to strike at an opponent's leg than when he's balancing on only one foot?
What you see in the video is that with the kick, he makes the opponents front foot slip a foot or two. That's enough to make him drop. I think that the slippery-ness of the ground matters a lot. One could argue that the technique would originally have been used on natural terrain, which would make it less useful today. The time it costs to get in a low position would be the trade off for being able to drag the opponents foot two feet. Getting low gives a low kick maximum range.
That's quite a good idea. You'd have to have really good reflexes, but if you caught him with that leg sweep on a high kick, it would be pretty devastating

Nice sweep, shifu! Any thoughts on drills to learn how to set up opportunities to use this technique? It seems like jockeying for the right angle will be half the battle (as it so often is).
In sparring, I found the only time I could land the sweep was if they were about my size or smaller (please don't try this on someone bigger than you unless you are really confident it's a lot harder xD) and if they were throwing a roundhouse or hook kick. You can grab the kick then do a committed sweep to take them down or you block and sweep out their support leg while they kick. I never got proficient at it and if you use it too much people will get use to defending it but it's definitely a lot of fun to play around with.
I am not a Kung Fu person but I but I like your your teaching style mostly keeping simple in mind. Good job taking a minute for animals in the process. and in the heat! CA boy.

Now, I feel like an idiot! Please forgive my uncalled for and insensitive comment.. To persevere through that challenging period in your life, is the essence of a martial warrior. Once again, I apologize for my comment.
ive had his used on me in a fight, by the time i realised what was happening i was already swept. its all about reading your opponent and recognising the opportunity.... and thats remains true for executing any technique, its only impractical if you choose a stupid posuition from which to execute it. for example a superman punch can be stupidly impractical, if you dont set it up your going to jump straight onto the end of a kick.... you cant force anything, set it up though and it can be extremely effective.
See what you need to do is find an opponent that is light weight or weak then it should work and just hitting the ground will k.o them if there heavier sweep them then stomp once on the stomach area
Oner Sufri if you know how to execute a move, then it works, if you can execute a move correctly, then what's the problem, its an opportunity move, all moves are opportunities moves, if it won't work then don't do it.
@@pocho3881 It could possibly be effective if your opponent happened to be stationery at the time, like if he were frozen or sealed in concrete, ...or perhaps if he just happened to be a lifeless mannequin at the time, or if he had recently been turned to stone, then it could possibly be very effective.
I recommend taking advantage of any dirt or gravel on the ground to throw into oponants eyes helps. Thanks for a great video and you must have the best lawn in town.
You step in on the kick, and jam up the leg well inside it's intended range. I don't know if Jake knows this though, as he advised everyone to just put your weight (and thus balance) more on the leg that's being sweeped... as if that isn't exactly what the sweep kicker wants.

Amazing instructions and the way you explain!
This is the funniest shit ever

That's why you just yank the back of the ankle they will just woops my ass
That's actually true
1:11 “create separation” you could just step backwards but cool
I just started watching this because of karate kid.
U better be watching the original one and not the 2010 one my boy.
Joachim cool name and AWESOME video. Am learning alot.
Another brilliant demonstration thanks to both of you, and I would love to see more high detail demonstrations of hand-to-hand moves, and of course more weapons demos on appropriate days :D
Cool! More to come!
Hey so I'm a huge MK fan I'm gonna be like my idol sub zero. I got all the different roundhouses done and this is pure gold. I'm definitely subscribing for life and always checking out your online school. Thank you sooo much
This is great.
Me too! I want to be Ninja when I grow up, but I don't want to join martial arts school or work hard at it so these videos are right up my alley!
i sweeped someone once and i was just joking playing around and they fell on their hip lol! I impressed myself because I didnt know shit about the sweep, i just played a lot of hackey sack and was goofing but they dropped horizontal and everyone was like holy shit, but i didnt even know it was possible. lol! it was neat
Tom Thomas Yes! Sweeps are deadly!
you know it brother! I just subbed. Let me know if you have ever heard a diamond boxx speaker or Aiwa exos 9, I know this is weird.
Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace you’re an idiot Jake mace.
Hacky sack IS a great workout.
Hacky sack IS a great workout and probably more effective than this video.
Great video - really clear instruction. Thanks so much for posting this!
Great. I'm coming up soon on the 540-degree sweep in the 2nd Road of Hua, so I'd loooooove if you did more sweep videos. Keep rocking' it guys and thanks.
Nice! Mark, I love that move!
Sensei Kresse is proud of you...

Good teacher and a good hearted man!
I hope Missy has found a nice home already, thanks for the all good tips!!!
I love her she cute😂😂😂😁
Great teaching tip going to practice that before I go train to fight.. At least have one move down. Poor Missy good looking dog..
Nice sweep, shifu! Any thoughts on drills to learn how to set up opportunities to use this technique? It seems like jockeying for the right angle will be half the battle (as it so often is).
Yes, you're right! We'll put a video together about it!
Mitch Tate I can do better
Cool move, good lesson. What happens once you're both on the ground?
Great technique Jace !!!
LIKE THE SWEEP !!!
Thanks!
I am not a Kung Fu person but I but I like your your teaching style mostly keeping simple in mind. Good job taking a minute for animals in the process. and in the heat! CA boy.
Your partner needs to wear short sleeves and a hair cut for that heat! 😁😁😁😁
Years later, but thank you Joachim 😊!!!
I know this guy is experienced but you should always practice getting up immediately after throwing the kick not just laying there
Experienced in what?
Roll into the legs so he falls on top of you!
Super helpful thanks so much both of you! And missy is adorable
Brophy High School???!!! Shifu Mace attended a "silver spoon" Catholic High School!!!! Yes, I am giving Shifu Mace a respectfully hard time! Great video.
Haha Yehuda! It's true! I went to Brophy my Freshman year of high school and LOVED IT! But, then my Parents divorced and my Dad was overcome with alcoholism and drug addiction, etc. So, from Sophomore year and on I went to public school!
Now, I feel like an idiot! Please forgive my uncalled for and insensitive comment..
To persevere through that challenging period in your life, is the essence of a martial warrior.
Once again, I apologize for my comment.
Bro is havin' way too much fun trippin' this guy. 😆
Actually not practical. When you use this trick in a real fight, you would probably be beaten into ass.
I tried this once in a fight. by the time I got in position, the guy knocked my ass out with a punch to the face.
ive had his used on me in a fight, by the time i realised what was happening i was already swept. its all about reading your opponent and recognising the opportunity.... and thats remains true for executing any technique, its only impractical if you choose a stupid posuition from which to execute it. for example a superman punch can be stupidly impractical, if you dont set it up your going to jump straight onto the end of a kick.... you cant force anything, set it up though and it can be extremely effective.
南极 no actually I did it in a real life and the guy went off balance and I ground and pounded him
Jon you probably did it wrong
See what you need to do is find an opponent that is light weight or weak then it should work and just hitting the ground will k.o them if there heavier sweep them then stomp once on the stomach area
Legend has it, he even loves sweeping the kitchen
I’m a black belt this is not a move it’s just a cheese movie move
A kickboxer kicks around 635kg of force, please show me how you block that with this technique. It will break your leg I think
You step in on the kick, and jam up the leg well inside it's intended range. I don't know if Jake knows this though, as he advised everyone to just put your weight (and thus balance) more on the leg that's being sweeped... as if that isn't exactly what the sweep kicker wants.
@beans like everyone else we are here to learn fake moves from a fake faced Jake mace because we are too much pussies to be real and walk it like we talk it because we're all big poseurs who only do martial arts because we think it makes us "look cool". Isn't that right beans you bitch you
Yah, and it totally puts your Achilles heel in the line of fire. Which could really hurt.
The thing with sweeping is that you have to be really quick, cuz if your opponent notices what you are trying to do for even a second, he is gonna counter attack you
Jackie Chan and Jet Li do these move.
Yes! ;)
That's where Jake gets his education in martial arts, no? The Hollywood school!
This version of sweep kick looks more my style:3 thanks!!
Jesus Christ loves you .
Press back and low kick
