Hi, I just wanted to say thank you for all your delicious (and easy to follow)recipes. I am american and my husband was born in Nigeria. Unfortunately he has not been home in about 15 years. About four months into dating he had a birthday and I wanted to make him something Nigerian. I made these meat pies. When he tasted them he said it was the moment he knew he was going to marry me. 6 years later we have now been married for 3 years and I have since made many more of your recipes. Thank you for helping me bring a little of Nigeria to my husband.
Meeeen! My mother was an Home Economics teacher and did she cook this for us back in the day!! Everytime I had fever, after all the chloroquine and cold baths and all, what always settled the matter was a well-baked meat pie! Chai! God bless my mother!!
Tried this yesterday...it was soooooo awesomely successful and am so proud of myself. Na oyibo don try make em first 9ja dish...lol...My Nigerian friends loved it n thanked me so much n couldn't believe i was the one who made them. Will be making more for more of them to enjoy being away from home. :) Thank you so much.
Hello my name is Andrea from Germany married to a Nigerian Yoruba man . i followed your discribtion how to make Meat Pie , thank you very much i found it very easy because of your teaching . They came out perfect . God bless you my dear .
I am a Carbbean-American and I love, love, love what you are doing! I always wanted to learn how to prepare some of these foods and I am glad you are here to stay! lol. Now I can surprise my hubby-to-be. Ese gan!
Yes, they are very easy! Glad you found the video helpful! :) You can make them without baking powder actually. But you need to bake at a slightly lower temperature (say 150 deg C) for best results.
I was very impressed with simple, easy way of doing this. It was clear and well videoed. You don't need to have fancy things to make beautiful food. thank you.
The crust is thick on mine. At first bite it kind of reminds me a bit of a pretzel taste. As I continue to eat it though, I notice I particularly enjoy the crispness of the crust. I realize that the Thyme really is a deal maker on the recipe. Thyme adds the perfect complement to the pie...a light, almost aromatic taste unlike anything I've ever had before. The only way I can describe it is a mix between the soft caress of a flower's smell with a portion of the sweetness of a blade of grass on your tongue. Certainly interesting. I made my pie with chives, ground beef, and russet potatos because I didn't have any carrots or Walla Walla onions. Just took another bite...I gotta say WOW! The crispness of the bread along with the softness of the potato...goes really well with the beef flavor. Thank you! I really enjoyed this, a fun little project. I got about 8 still on the pan for when they come home. One more thing I realized is that when I'm cooking or baking, I get this incredibly happy feeling...it's beyond words. Maybe gratitude, as well, very thankful. So thank you for this video - You've made me smile a lot today. Good job : )
Thankyou for this instructional video.. I made these meat pies foe the very first time in preparation to learning Nigerian recipes for my fiancé who is Nigerian.. Im African American.. And he was AMAZED at how on point they came out.. I made too much of the beef so i wind up making almost 30 of them and shared with my Childrens neighborhood friends who in fact thought they were purchased out of the supermarket. They were DELICIOUS! thnx agn
woohoo! love how you got ur pan frying and cooking. love the way you work with your hands to get the dough done. coz for us malay cultures we did the same too. you called it pie we called them "epok-epok" or in english curry puffs. for us malays, we usually put different fillings in them. we have sardines with onions/ potato filling/ or egg with diff vege in it. totally can relate this. Hi from Singapore fan here!
This was amazing! I made my first batch yesterday and I cannot believe how good they are ! Please keep posting these videos, you are motivating me to cook more!
Thank you! God bless you too :)) By only up, do you mean only top heating? Most ovens that I know have top and down heating and the down heating is almost always hidden especially in electric ovens so I'm guessing yours have a down heating, just that you can't see it. So yes, go ahead and use it but if you notice that the underside of the meatpie is uncooked by the time the top side is brown, then turn the pies upside down so the undersides can cook too. :))
Ok Nigerian Recipe..I love your videos..I learned how to make Ila Alasepo from your video..And now Meat-pie...I just baked it for the first time today and everyone at home loved it..Thank you sooooo much....I will be learning more...
Really enjoy your video approach! Not only was it a nice dish idea, I also liked just watching the whole process made from scratch rather than the typical "corporate kitchen" style vids where they show each step already done, and they probably just throw out the unfinished steps. I haven't read through the other comments-- perhaps this has already been mentioned. But one thing that would be nice while watching this (because of the length) would be to mix in some different music, rather than repeating the same track. THANK YOU for putting these together!
Did you rub egg inside the closure? It helps keep the meat pie sealed. And when closing with the fork, you need to press it down very well till the 2 flaps of dough are combined.
wonderful! simply wonderful! after watching, i want to make! thank you for the upload! it's so nice seeing people making a different types of foods! it's simple, yet incredible at the same time! :D thank you once again!
By prepare the meat in the first place do you mean mince it? If so then that's done by the butchers I bought the meat from. Some supermarkets also sell already minced meat.
I wanted to throw a very special party, for my dearest and close friend who was born and raised in Nigeria. So I hit the internet, and learned enough Swahili to ask his mother for his favorites foods AND her recipes. I created a menu, purchased certain items that are classic in Nigerian cooking, I wanted it to taste the same as when he was young, I made a few variations, (I have to its just my nature LOL) I use Cornflour (Corn Starch) instead of flour to thicken, strangely it made a HUGE difference, or even potato flour (potato starch) each type has a different taste and consistency Why? No clue I digress After practice, and 5 pounds of weight gain from "Testing" I threw him the surprise party, only he figured something was up, because he SMELLED it from down the hall, it didn't matter because I don't think he spoke for hours, he just grunted in immense pleasure, smiling and in utter disbelief, it was the best gift I ever got. Nothing better than someone who enjoys your cooking but that's just me :) Plus I skyped his family to sing Happy Birthday. We cried! We ate! We laughed, it was GREAT
Oops Kenyan. His mother was Kenyan, but his father was Nigerian, he grew up in Kenya as well, I apologize for the confusion I should have been clearer My Bad :) TY Park Chanyeol
Yes thank you! I just vlogged a Nigerian Party and these were all over the table as appetizers. I am dating a Nigerian and am learning so much about the culture
Omgosh! Looks delicious but looks like some work to make the dough but I know its worth it in the end. New subscriber here, cant wait to view and save other food tutorials.
I'm so greatful for your channel...the amount of 'You don't cook' arguments i have had with hubby !!! being im mixed race british grown up on English food and he is born and bred Nigerian..its been hard o' the past 15 years lol....Now i am cooking all nigerian food and as he puts it ' Just like mums food' YEY BOY! thank you so much...i believe now that a way to a mans heart is through his belly heheh...i have cooked something new every day and these pies are YUM!!!!! xxxxxx Thank you xxxxxx
I always grill the meat or chicken for my Jollof Rice in the oven. It tastes better than when fried as some of the taste is lost in the oil. You asked this question about Jollof Rice somewhere else, right? I have sent you the video.
I'm not Nigerian but I love the people and food. When I cook nigerian food people would think I'm from there.Good video, but what other meat can i use for the filling.
ground lamb... ground sausage.... we hunt so I've tried it w/ deer sausage and pheasant all good I did a just my spices and seasoning vegetables to each type of meat😆
When I was in college my Nigerian roommate used to cook this soup he called Fish Stew with deep fried rice balls. Never could quite duplicate the recipe. Do you know what this one could be? I loved it :) thank you
By breaking do you mean the dough is not elastic? If yes, I'm thinking that you used butter instead of margarine. For the consistency, all you have to do is add water bit by bit till you get a hard consistency, make a ball of the dough, put it in a bowl and cover for about 10 minutes, then knead again and you will see that it is softer.
Well, i am a man, so u can understand my excitement. I couldn't help shouting when you wrapped the dough around the vegetable and designed the edge with a fork. I was like "ase be se nse leleyi" (so, this is how you people do it). I love it and definitely will give it a try. Pray someone will be willing to share it with me o...lol
Ssshhhh- I used the premade Empanada dough when I had a craving for naija meat pie. Awesome results! Now I premake the filling using your recipe and freeze.❤
Thanks for this simple and educative video. I know it probably will taste great. I, however want to advise you on certain things. Most of the equipments you will need for making this can be found in the stores; the cutter, the mixer, brush etc. These can be used rather than your hands and pot lids. Otherwise, I think its a good job. Can we also call this meat/potato/carrot pie rather than meat pie?
While this is great advice, I love that she did it that way because it shows alternatives. Prior to watching her video, I had watched another one and all I could think about was all the extra things I had to buy, especially the mixer. Not everyone has access to purchasing some of these items for next to nothing, or is even interested in doing so. So, thank you lady for smarter home remedies.
I find this method of cooking sketchy. If i was making this for myself then no problem, i wouldn't care about using equipment such as mixers and stuff but otherwise i could not cook this for others or eat it if it was made in such a fashion. I guess it depends on the individual. This looks delicious though.
Kneading the dough is what makes the dough stretchy and ensures that the ingredients are well incorporated and distributed. I can't imagine what the dough will be like without the kneading. It is a must when you are making any pastry so that the dough will be smooth. Or maybe you mean something else and not kneading?
I've watched several of these recipes and I just have one criticism. CHANGE THE MUSIC!!! IT'S DRIVING ME UP THE WALL!!!! Other than that, I like the food.
Awww Sarista Celestial! The annoying music is not in my recent videos. :) And the good thing is that in these videos they are in, I do not talk so you can mute it. Please I don't want you up that wall o! :D I'm glad you like the food. :)
@ Sarista Celestial Das Video und Rezept sind super! Leider hat man mit der Hintergrundmusik immer ein Copyright Problem und greift auf Commercial Commons zurück. Aber schlecht ist die Musik nicht, nur zu oft gehört!
I like the music - I know it's kitchy, but that makes me think of this channel and good food. Look at foodwishes channel - I've heard his theme music on larger platforms like TV, but I associate that theme music to his channel. Just know that many YT channels are home-based operations with very limited budget. As long as the music is not obtrusive, it adds to the atmosphere.
Yay! Congratulations! We've taken the 2nd step towards this great task :DDD Without baking powder, the meat pie will be as hard as rock. And I find it hard to believe that you could not find baking powder in all the Tescos, all the Asdas, sainsburys etc in London ... mmmh, it's the most basic ingredient in pastries so it is not hard to find at all :) Look harder, even if it means asking store managers :D
Oluwadamilola Lawrence aileru . I learn from looking. That's how my mother taught her kids to cook, and we can cook damn good. But I can understand what your pov. Different strokes for different folks.
Looks very delicious and hardy. Minus the potatoes and carrots, here in The Bahamas we call those patties. I would like to try the Nigerian way though.
Yes, you can. I do that all the time. :) For best results, dish them in single use containers so you only defrost the quantity you need at a time. It's not good to defrost and refreeze it. Hope this makes sense.
If you can buy the tiny porcelain mortars, they are quite good for pounding small stuff like pepper. Another thing I do is to blend some pepper (about 5 habanero peppers) and store in the freezer. We don't eat much pepper so it is ridiculous blending only one pepper when I want to cook especially as I need to pour in a lot of water for the blades to rotate :DDD You can also use a blitzer (UK), no need to add water. I always respond to questions dear, you don't need to ask :) God bless you too!
Awww, please post it on my Facebook wall. The link is in the description of the video. I can't wait to see the image of those "conquered" meat pies! :))) Well done!
I've made meat pies using this exact recipe as a base. I've used deer, clam(not the best), chicken, lamb, and pork. I would have to say that deer meat was the best one by far. thanks for sharing.
i just went to heaven and came back.. this looks soo yummy.. however! i'll have to use my own version.. Ground Turkey rather than the beef, Sweet potatoes rather than than white potatoes, and whole wheat flour.. i'll try it out and hope it taste the same.. good work!
Once it has margarine written on it, you can use it for this recipe. A popular brand is Flora but you don't have to use that brand. I used to live in the UK and you can get margarines in Sainsbury's, tesco etc. Ask the store manager if you have to but it is usually on the cheese and butter aisle
Well done for doing a great job of it! My brother (hubby) is lucky o! If you can conquer this recipe, the rest will be very easy for you. You're welcome!
This has been turning out great for me. I substitute margarine for olive oil sometimes to reduce fat content and it turns out the same. Never knew I could make this myself at home till I watched and followed this. Thank you!
Mrs. Flo thank you so much for this great recipe. I followed step-by-step and ended up with 30 delicious meat pies (used a smaller ring to cut the dough)
Aunty flo good evening ma. This is the first video I watched of you. I had just started living on my own and couldn’t cook much apart from rice and stew and jollof. I said to myself I had to learn how to make Igbo soups just Incase Mr. Right shows up especially since I wanted an Igbo man. I met my husband the following year. I rewatched this video today and it brought back so much memory. God bless you for creating this channel bcos it made so much impart on my cooking skills. The website was helpful but you TH-cam channel is a different game.
The kind of comment that brings tears of joy to my eyes when I remember the struggles of starting this TH-cam channel, when I knew nothing about filming and editing a video, newborn in hand etc but I had to start this channel due to the questions I was getting on my website that I could no longer continue to explain in writing. Thank you so much Jennifer for remembering and taking the time to leave me this comment. 💛 May God bless you too.
Hi dear :) I don't like using butter in this recipe because it makes the dough very oily. I guess it's because butter is heavier than margarine. And if you decide to use less butter, the dough won't be as stretchy. I use the minced meat straight form the butcher and season it with stock cubes. Corned beef? If you've not tasted the classic Nigerian meatpie, you may not notice the difference but for the real deal stuff, I wouldn't use corned beef cos of its strong taste if you know what I mean.
I am not Nigeria, I'm 1/2 Haitian and I must say this looks good. I just subcribed to your channel. I love to cook and love to try different types of ethnic food. You're videos are very nice. clear and precise. Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipes! : )
Wow! Wow!! Wow!!! Thanks for the tutorial, I enjoyed it, I'll definitely try it over the weekend or before the week runs out. It was quite an intriguing one, I didn't get bored and yes, I did learn good.
LOL Thank you dear! The funny or should I say pity-them part is that the comment would have taken them at least 5 minutes to type while they would have used 2 seconds to click show more and scan the description :DDD Yay! to your Mum :) I'm glad you find the recipes helpful.

I'm not Nigerian but I love the people and food. When I cook nigerian food people would think I'm from there.Good video, but what other meat can i use for the filling.
Any meat you prefer :)
ground lamb... ground sausage.... we hunt so I've tried it w/ deer sausage and pheasant all good I did a just my spices and seasoning vegetables to each type of meat😆
I can't remember the song name but the link to the site is in the description.
Love this. It looks so good.
I made this, it tasted so good.

I have a Nigerian husband who misses his native food more often then not. I am not a great cook, trying this as we speak! Hoping to impress him! :)
Very helpful!
this reminds me of me and my mom,
making this in the kitchen when i was a kid.
great video=)
CAME FOR THE RECIPE, STAYED FOR THE SOUNDTRACK
+Alana a :D
Kneading the dough is what makes the dough stretchy and ensures that the ingredients are well incorporated and distributed. I can't imagine what the dough will be like without the kneading. It is a must when you are making any pastry so that the dough will be smooth. Or maybe you mean something else and not kneading?
Read the description of the video and watch the updated video at: th-cam.com/video/MPbIpRmvl2Y/w-d-xo.html
please what's the white stuff you mixed with water inside the cup?
Amaechi Pamela flour
pamela flour is corn flour right?
Fofina A Carter plain flour use for cakes, chinchin and other pastries
Nigerian cuisine seams delicious *-* I am looking forward to try these recipies :D
@ Sarista Celestial
Das Video und Rezept sind super! Leider hat man mit der Hintergrundmusik immer ein Copyright Problem und greift auf Commercial Commons zurück. Aber schlecht ist die Musik nicht, nur zu oft gehört!
Really? I think it fits the vid perfectly!
Sarista Celestial .
Why is it difficult for the tutor to speak? u don't keep quite when teaching on a platform of this nature. I personally didn't find this helpful.
this video was done in 2011 she now talks in her recent videos and also there is a link down in the description box
Oluwadamilola Lawrence aileru . I learn from looking. That's how my mother taught her kids to cook, and we can cook damn good. But I can understand what your pov. Different strokes for different folks.
Yeah.. sometimes when u see and hear u won't forget easily....
Oluwadamilola Lawrence aileru that's true too.
I just made my first attempt on these. They were hit with the family. Thank you.
lol ... yes this is so filling indeed and it shouldn't be called just a snack! I'm glad you like it :)
what is your culture, if you don't mind me asking
iv'e never heard of empanadas!?
Looks very delicious and hardy. Minus the potatoes and carrots, here in The Bahamas we call those patties. I would like to try the Nigerian way though.
Asante mama!! I love how you so natural in cooking. You use your hand and other resources..very nice indeed!!
Awww ... did you use margarine or butter?
Great recipe and excellent results! i'm 18 and my Sierra leonean parents are constantly telling me I should cook more. Everyone was impressed!
Yes, you can. I do that all the time. :) For best results, dish them in single use containers so you only defrost the quantity you need at a time. It's not good to defrost and refreeze it. Hope this makes sense.
hi your recepe is superb. I've tryed it so so good there's nothing to complain everything is written cleared. Thankyou so much.
Thank you! I'm glad you had success with the recipe. :)
When you set it to bake. I wanted to differenciate between that and grill (broil).
Ground Turkey rather than the beef, Sweet potatoes rather than than white potatoes, and whole wheat flour.. i'll try it out and hope it taste the same.. good work!
Reminds me of Jamaican patties, looks yummy!! I can't wait to try it. Thanks for posting!!!
Once it has margarine written on it, you can use it for this recipe. A popular brand is Flora but you don't have to use that brand. I used to live in the UK and you can get margarines in Sainsbury's, tesco etc. Ask the store manager if you have to but it is usually on the cheese and butter aisle
I am glad I found your channel. I am looking for Nigerian dishes to make for my boyfriend, lol you have saved me an huge headache!!!! Love it.
He will surely enjoy it Kay Bee! Well done for going the extra mile to prepare home food for him. :)
All Nigerian Recipes No need to talk when you know what you're doing! Great!
Thank you!
no disrespect at all...this looks amazing...i just see the labor of love going in to this cooking and it simply looks amazing...i was in awe
I'll have to try this. It looks really delicious and really simple.

oluebube miracle I'm glad! That's the aim of my channel dear. We don't need a 5-star kitchen to prepare these at home. :)
Tried this today. Great success. It was delicious. Blew my diet eating more than 1 at once! Start again tomorrow.
This is the only channel I go to for Nigerian meals and Snacks.. I'll be making chin chin for my babies later 😋
💛 May God bless you too.
very helpful video, my Nigeria hubby will be very happy with me by the time prepare this food, love you my lady
All Nigerian Recipes can I use gluten free all purpose flour?
You're welcome! Your friends are lucky to have someone who goes out of her way to learn how to cook their food. Keep it up dear :)
Ty so much my Nigerian hubby will be Shocked to the core tyvm ma stay blessed loving it no Nigerian stew to master
They definitely are! Thank you!
Well done Judith! I'm happy you went adventurous with the folding. Good job! I'm proud of you. :)
I am not Nigeria, I'm 1/2 Haitian and I must say this looks good. I just subcribed to your channel. I love to cook and love to try different types of ethnic food. You're videos are very nice. clear and precise. Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipes! : )
Good job dear! Anybody from anywhere in the world can prepare and enjoy these Nigerian foods and snacks too! :) Thank you.
Thanks you , you did an amazing job.....could you melt the margarine? Or would it not give the same texture?
Whatever you do Kenya Onyango :))) do not melt the margarine! Thank you!
Wow! Wow!! Wow!!! Thanks for the tutorial, I enjoyed it, I'll definitely try it over the weekend or before the week runs out. It was quite an intriguing one, I didn't get bored and yes, I did learn good.
Thank you for this wonderful recipe

You're welcome Kristi! Thank you!
LOL Thank you dear! The funny or should I say pity-them part is that the comment would have taken them at least 5 minutes to type while they would have used 2 seconds to click show more and scan the description :DDD Yay! to your Mum :) I'm glad you find the recipes helpful.
