The F-5 is a beautiful beast, in Chile 🇨🇱 we still have the F-5 operating, and they have updated them for many years, now they are called F-5 Tiger III
Evertime I see the F-5 it just looks like way too much fun to fly. It's such a tiny little sports car of a fighter jet, the pilots who fly it must have a blast.
Beautiful, sleek, and simple. One of my all time favorite aircraft. Thanks for the video and the good camera work. I'm glad to see these planes still flying and doing some high performance maneuvering.
This video made my day! I worked on all of the Mig and Baron F-5E/Fs up until the day we gold plated them and sent them out of Nellis in the late 80s. These jets are absolutely immaculate and the Gomers flying them are razor sharp! I haven't seen Tiger aggressors fly since 1989. These birds looked and sounded great! The Gomer diamond looks as good as the Blues'!
I had an Airfix 1:72 scale F5-E that was an Aggressor. easy to build, probably like at the Northrop factory as well , in the Snake paint scheme . Lovely
My uncle was a crew chief on F-4's in Vietnam and worked on several different aircraft including the F-5. He said that the inside of the wings on these is a honeycomb design. He said you had to be careful while working around the wings because they were so small and fragile. I guess it's all about weight saving when you have small engines like these do. Still, they are awesome little fighters and they look great with the camo paint schemes.
The F-5 is an old fighter indeed. The ROK Air Force still uses this one in active duty, so it's a very familiar aircraft to Koreans. It's great to see the F-5 in dynamic maneuvers.
My first job out of high school was working on the F5 assembly line in hawthorne California putting the center fuselage halfs together. Very cool airplane.
Love the Tiger 2's so much. The Tornado, Corsair II, and Tiger II's were all posters on my wall as a kid (next to Kristi Yamaguchi and Sara Michelle Gellar of course!)
We were there. Outstanding air show with something always flying. The F5 airframe is so prolific. As a kid if you drew what you think an Air Force fighter should look like it probably came close to the F5 profile.
A few years ago, VFC-111 visited JRB NAS New Orleans for an airshow and they played the aggressor role in opposition to a flight of F-18s. It was an entertaining demonstration to say the least.
I'm proud to work on these F-5s engine components from VFC-13 NAS Fallon Nevada, VFC-111 NAS Key West Florida, and VMFT-401 MCAS Yuma Arizona. Keep flying to keep me busy at work 😂.
Very, very different aircraft. You have too see them side by side and it really shows just how different. The F 5 is actually bigger for one, the wing design is also different.
No The T-38 is essentially the prototype for the F-5. The F-5 is vastly different, no matter how close they look on the outside, they're still different there too, and the insides are completely foreign to one another. Not even close. Especially since these are F-5E's (actually N/M's, modernized E's used as aggressor aircraft), but even the F-5A is dramatically different.
@@Rogue-7.62 the whole nose section is also completely different. Especially on these (E/N/M models), but still so on the A and C models as well, even without a radar.
LOVE THIS!!!! I get to see F-5s regularly flying over my place as they RTB from training flights but never get to see them like this!! Gotta love it and wanna see more of this!!
It's been said that the F-20 was the best fighter jet ever cancelled. Chuck Yeager loved it, that's enough for me to make up my mind. Watching these Tigers fly around I can see some F-105 in their fuselage, I can see some F-104 in their wings. Love the Soviet camo'd Tigershark Aggressor specimen, so cool. Please let me upscale this airframe by 10%, replace the engines and give it 15-20% more wing and I think I'll have an aircraft that we could sell today.
The changes you suggested are basically what the F-20 was lmao, and if you change it much more, you end up with an F-16 or F-18, since both of those took heavy influence from the F-5's.
@@evangalinsky2499 The F-20 could still be sold today not sure what's so funny about that? For a lot of countries it's having almost no air force and having some F-20s. It wasn't sold. It wasn't sold because it wasn't manufactured. It'd be easy to sell it. You wouldn't buy it. You'd waste money you don't have on a plane you don't need.
@@fifteenbyfive I never said it couldn't. I'm literally just pointing out the aircraft you described if allowed access to everything needed to modify the plane, is literally just the F-20. I didn't think my comment was that complicated.
I work on these just in MCAS Yuma, VMFT-401 , the F-5 is a WONDERFUL Airplane. It's powerful, fast, very small profile for the bad guys to see. It's inexpensive (compared to modern a/c). It can TURN GREAT! It's a fantastic aircraft for what we're using it for. It should/SHALL be used in this way for many more YEARS! I've been here in 401 for nearly 36 yrs.
This is an awesome video! Now one of those F-5s is painted in a Tri-Color Scheme from mid '44, representing an F6F-3 Hellcat from that time, and that scheme was rolled out for the Centennial Of Naval Aviation, eleven years, ago.
The F-5E is still a superb fighter. I'm not surprised the Navy's upgrading their Tigers for the Aggressor Squadron and the fact they bought 44 retired Swiss F-5s says a lot. It's too bad new, more powerful and economical turbofan engines aren't in the works for this fantastic aircraft. Damn, this fighter is so beautiful.
My grandfather was one of the original Northrop employees. Retired in 1986, his son, my uncle, worked there for a long time too. They were so proud of their work. I love seeing this, and the F/A-18s. Thought not Northrop, they were derived from the YF-17.
