    Best money I ever spent is on the Kelly Kettle. Got the base camp model with all the stuff and added the smaller cook set because it fits inside the larger cook set. I have tried a number of fuels and like all for different things. I prefer Charcoal for keeping water hot for longer without having to feed it. Only takes 4 brickets every 1/2 hour to do the job on that. If you want to boil 1 or more quarts in under 2 minutes, try bamboo. I split mine into pencil size about 3 thru 6 inches long and feed them into the top until it has a good little flame coming out of the top. Works very well but to hot for cooking and charcoal is not hot enough alone without over doing it but a combination of the two or with other types of fuel cooking works nice. Just got to do the cooking slow to keep the creosote taste down from black smoke. Best to cook smokeless as possible. Best little kitchen in a can I have ever come across. The best method I have found for prepping a full meal fast, I start with the bamboo to boil water to hydrate food and as that dies down, I add 4-6 charcoals and start cooking meat slower. I add a small stick of bamboo as needed to keep the heat up but just enough so it don't start smoking black. After the meat is finished, I just add a charcoal every 10 minutes or so to keep water hot for coffee. With the base camp model I generally have enough water left after food hydration and a couple cups of coffee to clean everything up well with some to spare.

    Hey. Had the chance to try out a fuel basket, just like yours yesterday. Worked a treat, can store four pre loaded baskets inside the kettle for when I walk the hills where fuel is scarce. Makes it much easier to keep the fuel burning properly, no wastage. I used some holm oak, and some elm, the oak produced some cracking coals for cooking on, really pleased with the new level of control your mod allows, bravo. Thanks again.

    Tried your basket idea also. Got pencil holders at the dollar store. Pre packaged wood and birch bark in saran wrap fit nicely up inside the kettle. I find the base doesn't get all smoked and burned up when using the basket idea. Thanks. I also added an S hook on my handle to hold the cork when I'm boiling.

    Great idea to optimise the fuel amount, rate of burn. I have had a smaller kelly kettle for a few years now, and I tend to use the whole area of the base for the fire, as I like to do a quick boil. I will definitely try this out, and see if the boil time is reduced. Thanks for uploading. Happy trails.

    @MrMaddogg2010 I made the draft controll out of the top of a stainless steel salt shaker, punched a series of small 1/4" holes in a circular patern untill the center hole was formed. I can't remember what I used for the spout cover. I experience the ash in the spout also. My wife and I used our small kelly kettles over the past weekend. Using a wire basket to contain the twigs makes for an easy cleanup and removeal of kettle without the twigs falling every which way.

    Awesome ideas, the basket and the flame tamer there... I'm considering the Ghillie Kettle myself because I don't like the idea of dropping that cork on the ground, then putting a dirty cork inside my water chamber. Seems more hygienic to have a cover... and the whistle is a bonus. Thanks for sharing your ideas with all of us!

    yep, because I always have perfectly formed bits of wood when I camp....LOL. I love the idea but I'm always amazed when folks demo these things as if back yard pre-prep conditions are what you'll have (or find) 10 miles offshore on an island or 10 miles from the car. Just use the darn thing as intended....scrap wood and debris.

      OK...I see your point yet why not determine he best case scenario? Also, perhaps he takes some of the perfect wood along for the first night or as a backup. I am thankful he took the time to demonstrate this stove and have somehow restrained myself from seeking out whats wrong with it. You might try the same.

      G Henrickson Oh okay....sheez.....fair enough. You are quite right and I was too smarmy and not nearly appreciative enough of someone who took the time to post anything at all. Apologies for that and you are right to call me on it. It's a good demo and I merely found the pre-pepared conditions humorous rather than irritating because they are in many respects so unnecessary. That said, if you actually use your KellyKettle in places where such prep is possible then who cares and good on you. But it's worth adding that one of the virtues of the system is that it can consume random scrap typically overlooked by other campers!!

      It doesn't really take very long to prepare your fuel from whatever scraps you find laying around. 10 minutes of prep can have you 6 cups of boiling water in another what, 10 minutes of fire? I don't believe there is a faster way to boil 1.5 l of cold water.

    • @neologian1783
      @neologian1783 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xenaguy01 Totally agree and I probably came off a bit cranky in my post. Sorry about that. For the record I love the concept of the Kelly Kettle and aside from it's bulk (relative to a isobutane backpacking stove) I think it's cool piece of kit. Even my criticism is only to say it's probably something I'd take car or kayak camping rather than "backpacking". But it's a great concept and efficient way to boil water fast with nothing but the sort of small "debris" that is readily found but ignored by campers looking to build a proper fire.
      I suppose I was just commenting on the perfectly and uniformly cut pieces of hardwood used in this demo. Unless you pack those in, it's gonna be twigs and pine needles not uniform 1cm x 1cm staves of red oak. :-)

  • @kennosen
    @kennosen 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @zellph yeah, I'm always using pine, and the odd cone and though it burns hot and fast, does not last long. I've never thought to try some of my house wood burner's hardwood stash, as you know, oak burns hot and lasts a lot longer than pine. Looking forward to trying a basket holder, and new levels of kelly kettle fire control. You have given me inspiration to try another way to boil my brew more efficiently. Thanks again.

    Maybe. I thought it would very except the draft/chimney extends the flames upward and your damper keeps the flame contained. I appreciate your perspective. Thanks again.

    It's just something I made with stainless steel wire cloth from McMaster Carr online.You can make them any size you want to fit the kettle. Thrift stores might have something that will work just as good. Pencil organizers from office supply stores, the ones with all the holes in them will work.

    To those who notice the uploaders use of small, uniform pieces of wood, that may have a perfectly natural explanation. When it has rained for weeks and the outer surface of the wood is soaked with water, one can split the wood into pieces like the uploader have done, and get to the core wood, which is dry. That's actually an necessity in the field. Sometimes it is, at least.

  • @zellph
    @zellph  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @kennosen I have a video showing how I use the kettle without the base, just the twig holder. I used 2 trekker kettles side by side. I had the idea to use the twig basket/holder before I purchased the kettle. I saw videos of the kettle and how burning twigs fall out when the kettle is removed from it's base. The small amount of wood in the basket boils the 6 cups in my larrge kettle and keeps the coals managable when the kettle is removed.

    You will need to make the coil larger and have constant cold water to distill. Wink wink. Tennessee hillbilly here. We know a little about distillation. Also keep fire just hot enough to make steam not too hot.

    Thanks for responding. The flame of the tea lights are 1200 degrees. I hoped maybe the thin skin of the chimney, the containment of the heat by your damper and lid over the spout and the the draft created by design could d all work together. If it did boil a cup or 2 water within 10 minutes or so it would be the best indoor use urban survival tool ever.Light heat, hot water for hot drinks and some oatmeal, pasta type meals.Each tea light lasts 3 hours. Thanks for responding I appreciate it.
