💈Old School Barber Shave & Shape Up by Mr Chicken | Possibly The Oldest Barber in The Azores

- José Galinha or Mr. Chicken as he is known locally is an 88-year old barber who had been barbering since the age of 10. He had been operating a barbershop in the town of Arrifes, just outside of Ponta Degada, for 72 years.
This old school barbershop was a rare find filled with local historical memorabilia and his personal collections of locally influenced nicknacks. Shops such as this that are built up over time with collections always give you such a different feeling as soon as you step inside. This barbershop is truly one of a kind not to be missed if you are ever in the area!
We were told of this amazing unique working barbershop by Marco Correia who also works as a barber at The Barbershop by João Rocha in Ponta Delgada. It was a place he had been to while growing up, and he told us about this barber who had been cutting hair for decades.
You could not google this shop online so we would have never known about it had it not been for Marco. We went with João to find the shop and it was the first time for him to visit the shop as well. Off we went without an address. We were told to head for a town just outside of Ponta Delgada and once in the center of town just ask somebody for the barbershop location!

I love all these peaceful people just watching the video relaxing trying to fall asleep commenting on the scary, unnerving episode in the mirror at 0:47! Its as though everybody was thinking the same thing.. "Hey wait a second. What was that?.. Did I just see that right?.. Is there a spirit in the mirror playing tricks?.. His shop is setup a lot like the barber in the route 66 video.
Most shop if not every shops that started around that era has the same trend. Back then there wasn't many different design and layout like today. But this is a beauty of its own.
I can tell you that he has Sao Miguel thick accent... Even Portuguese speakers will strugle to understand him

I'm 800 miles from my Indiana home, sitting in a food court waiting for my wife and daughter to do some after Christmas shopping and I click on Harry's latest video and I'm carried somewhere into the Azores in a quiet little barber shop. The noise of hundreds of people fades and I am at peace in the midst of chaos. Thanks, Harry.

The chicken used no hot towel and had the thinnest layer of shaving lather I have ever seen, yet he seemed to do a good job. Maybe the 6 hot towel, super creamy lather shave is all for show.

Wall-to-wall curiosities. I'm guessing it would take most of a day to properly examine them all. I am intrigued that certain items have dates painted on them. The chair has 1950 painted at the front of the seat near Harry's knees, and the drawer near the window (see 2:17) has 1947 painted on it. I'm wondering if I've missed other such dates in the vid.
Yeah, we could have spent all day there looking at everything and listening to Mr. Chicken's stories :) His shop is a little museum! Since a young age he took a lot of photos of the local area so now people come to him for historical photos of life in the Azores. He also showed us some of his photos of his travels to the US back in the 50s.

Simplicity in its perfection.. the best 7 mins of a man's experience at a barbers shop
This barber reminds me of the doctor that delivered our first child nearly 50 years ago. He was near 90 and had delivered almost 5000 babies. He had the same novel ability to walk without lifting his feet off the ground. I imagine he is/was a goldmine of history.
