I really respect Mortym's class when reviewing games. Even when he doesn't like a game, he's still proper enough to highlight the good and bad without screaming and being overly dramatic.

@@stanislavkimov2779 I go to Metacritic and browse through the list for a couple minutes. RPS, RPGamer come to mind as some of the better ones, Eurogamer, Edge in the past but I haven't been to them in years. All the best reviewers usually don't do scores. Steam reviews, I look at the most elaborate ones, and frequently sort by negative, I find those more helpful than hypeviews.
In general, I put much more value on word to mouth than individual reviewers. I'm, one could say, very active on reddit - but not r/gaming, that place is for tweens. I've been rather knowledgeable about the good and bad of Forspoken days before this video here went up, and I wasn't even really interested in the game
on TH-cam, I watch Escapist / Yahtzee, sometimes IGN quicklook, but they don't really inform my buying decisions. And this channel of course. 90%+ of the gaming content I watch is game design and deep dives, not reviews
if you take your information from places where fanboys are just screaming at each other, you're probably doing something wrong and also might just have accidentally clicked on r/gaming

I mean, to be fair man I don’t think you need to 100% a game tk say if you like it or not. If I’m not liking the first quarter of a game then why would I continue playing it. I’m speaking from just a non critic perspective btw. If it can’t hook you at the start then it’s already personally failed to me.
@@flameron1 I always believe you should aim for relative percentage cause if you 100% every game. Games with massive Times to beat or MMORPGS in general become unrulily issues.
Kind of a moot point either way since it really feels often like many jornos play like the first level (assuming they play any of it at all) before cranking out a score.
This was a really well rounded review. Respect for trying to cover aspects overlooked by other reviewers, and mentioning positives while still providing a strong list of negatives. Easily the best review I've seen of this game.

Agreed. This was a review well done. Currently playing through the game and IMO, everything mentioned in this review is pretty accurate for me thus far.
I wish there was a "Magicka" like spellcrafting/combination system in a game, like true freedom of combinations, it doesn't even need to be balanced just fun to experiment with.

The fact that you could empathize with the character in a personal way was really touching, I had no idea that was something you struggled with. Your content is fantastic and I hope you have moved past that stage of "hopelessness" in your life.

@Ewjiml that's funny cause you're talking to someone who's most of my family has been and I've met a lot of homeless people. Where im at you can find one damn near begging on every corner. Don't assume you're a small minority that's struggled, a lot of people struggle. People struggle a lot more than you realize more than likely.

It sucks especially when working minimum wage jobs and being harrased by the police sitting on a park bench.
Worked for food at resturants cleaning lots and trash.
You're thankful for every meal and a chance to get clean. Never resorted to stealing or digging in trash.

They seem to prioritized visuals over substance, which is unfortunately getting more common with the triple A games.

When the writing is like "wink wink, I'm in a fantasy world, I got magic, what's next, dragons?!@?!?" ... makes me think the writers don't believe in their own world they've built and are embarrassed that they're just doing another trope fantasy.
Or they don't regard fantasy as a serious genre.
it's called a whedonism and you can thank marvel movies for making it so popular. It's basically anytime a character acknowledges the wacky situation they are in without actually contributing anything worthwhile. They are especially annoying when they are used to interject levity into a serious situation because they are afraid of letting the audience experience unbroken tension for more than a couple seconds
Yeah, that type of writing is god awful. I couldn't stomach this even if the gameplay was fun.
I would bet they haven't read fantasy books at all , probaby just tv shows ...defo not any of the classic books , those kinds of nerds or not welcome in content creation these days

I was never gonna buy this game but I’ve been fascinated with the review cycle. This is hands down the best one. First time finding this channel!
The fact you only review games when you've 100% them, I respect that greatly! It is as it should be if you ask me. Endgames can sometimes be drastically different from the first opening hours of a game. Subbed, this is the type of reviews I look for within the space of gaming.
He does "first impressions" for the early game 'review'. Then follows with the review after 100%. It's a good distinction

Thanks for making this review, Mort! I had been hoping Forspoken would be more enjoyable and interesting than this, so I'm really glad you took the time to 100% it because it gave me all the info I needed to choose whether to play it or not. Essentially, my takeaway from this is that Forspoken isn't a bad game per se, but to me it looks like a game we would have seen in the late 2000s/early 2010s (e. g. Assassin's Creed, Mirror's Edge, that kind of thing). And for that time, those games were great and enjoyable, because some dozens of hours of content were more than enough for the not-as-high asking price, and they all did something quite new for that time. I feel like Forspoken falls flat because it doesn't necessarily do something entirely new with its gameplay. Watching gameplay of it made me just want to replay Assassin's Creed or Horizon Zero Dawn, rather than try the game out for myself, so there's the issue imo.
That was my thought: why play this unless you have no good Assassin'c Creed games left to complete, or you 100%ed HZD already. And since this AAA game looks like a AA game, I might as well buy Praey for the Gods or Generation Zero or a host of other AA and indy titles that arguably do most of the same but better and way cheaper.

I don't think I've ever heard him say that he would just never recommend the game (on PC). The price is absolutely outrageous in Germany, at least. 20 bucks more than a AAA title (80 instead of 60) is too much for virtually any game. It'd be a hard sell for the newest GOW or Eldenring, let alone that game.

Ich habe letztens ragnarok durchgespielt. Wenn ich alleine die Gesichtszüge und Grafik Vergleiche, sieht es aus als wäre forspoken ein Game aus 2013. oder eine „Switch Edition“ das ist grauenhaft

I think the game, level design and writing are just harder to pull off. The production art and some other aspects are just so labour intensive that these can get neglected.
It's a pity this didn't work out as well. It seems like it had immense potential. The art on this title really pulled through. Great review, as always!
This is a fantastic and very thorough review and that's what I love about your videos. It's easy to say that the game sucks because the dialogue is cringy and the combat is boring. But you actually went to great lengths to explain why certain aspects of the game are bad and why you can't recommend it because of the absolutely insane specs while still providing poor performance. Good job sir!
I agree. A lot of the other reviewers just made fun of the game to get a laugh out of it, but didn't do any critical analysis as to why the game isn't that great. Even if they did, they didn't describe the problems of the game so well as Mortismal Gaming did.
Combat is boring? Lol no. There are so many combinations of things you can do with the spells it’s nutty.
@@melodyseverything6999 Big yes. I've gotten exhausted with the extremes and arbitrary stances people take. Mortym's style reminds us why stuff an X/10 system is flawed and outrage farming neglects to frame games in the full context of their systems.
We can't expect stellar gaming experiences on par with the best of the vets on one hand if all we are willing to do is absolutely crucify the work of clearly growing developers on the other.

And I ain't saying Forspoken is in the same level as E.R because it isn't. Anyways all of RPG games have redundant combat system.

Just stumbled over this review... and found myself one of the most informativ, spot on game reviews I saw in a very long time. You sir did a magnificent job. It's all information there, no blabbering about, no endless repeating the obvious. And you did it for 20 minutes! I'm so sick of people delivering hot air in bulk that I just had to leave a comment here. I will definitly check out your other reviews!
I have the very weird coincidental similarity to Frey that I am also a New Yorker that practiced parkour who became homeless with just my cat and then lost everything in a fire. I'm not crazy about the game, but that opening hit too close to home, so to hear you share your homeless experience felt like a hug. Thank you for being open about that and highlighting that part of the story. I agree it portrays that situation very accurately. Hell, I even worked in Hell's Kitchen.

utilizing your own vulnerability to bring nuance to the main characters writing is honestly a baller writing move. It not only brought forth an aspect of the game that I doubt many other reviewers touched on, but made this entire review more grounded. You are courageous to bring into this review your own lived experience with homelessness, and I have mad respect for you to speak that truth into the void of the internet. I know I commented not that long ago about how your writing is improving, but dang dude. I'm loving this.
@@robinheinemann1740 I do not think it is right to conflate the representation of homelessness through the main character reaching Mort via his own lived experience as a positive outlook that begets rose colored glasses. To do so would be saying that he has some form of nostalgia for his lived experience of being homeless. Also, to relegate a lived experience as traumatic as homelessness to a "biased less useful viewpoint" is both dehumanizing and conveying that you do not delineate any sort of difference between opinion and experience. While I agree with your accountant analogy as an isolated statement external to everything else you wrote (placing value judgements on what people do to bring financial dignity into their lives is wrong), it is an analogy predicated on conflating experience and opinion. All in all, this man was brave enough to share a traumatic event he experienced to say "hey, the main character being homeless/forcibly transitory made me feel a certain way because it is representing things I also went through" - and for some reason, you see this as a useless and biased POV. I hope you understand that in your line of logic, you deny Mort his lived experience, and ironically argue the same substance as your accountant analogy (to insult the accountants job that the accountant takes pride in/enjoys is to deny that joy as valid).
I’m genuinely shocked that the studio who made the irredeemably boring world of final fantasy 15 learned NOTHING from the feedback they got on that game
they learned something, in this one you can explore the empty world on release.
ff15's car was railroaded for like a year.

Have to say, this review really hit the points I've been trying to make based on my own experience. Many seem to ignore the rather steep PC spec recommendations and instead call it flat out poor optimization. This is a game that really shows the difference between a HDD and SDD/M.2 running the game as well as the RAM requirement. This is coming from someone who installed it twice; once on HDD and once on M.2 SDD to see if there was a difference, and there is. I also have the option of using lower ram and different CPU/GPU setup and if you aren't willing to turn down the settings to use a 3700X, 1080GTX, and 16gb of RAM, it will run choppy. If it is on an HDD instead of a SDD, it will have significant load issues and choppiness as well.
My single most glaring issue with the game as a whole is issues I've had with other massive open world games: Damn big world map, very little reason to really put in the effort to explore all of it. This review hit that nail on the head square. The rewards for doing so are meh at best, the challenges in doing so are fairly low due to how combat system works, and literally only a small handful of quest require you to go out into the world beyond the city limits. If you want all the lore, you can do the archive challenges and some of the labyrinth challenges, but even with all that there is a lot of untapped story SE could have fleshed out in actual gameplay, but didn't.
Forspoken really lives up to what that meme showing someone sitting at their window with a keyboard and mouse looking out: Beautiful graphics, but game is boring to play outside of the very specific story which really you'll only be interested in by about 1/3 of the way in only if you can get past the absolute painful selfishness of the main character and the horrible dynamic between Frey and Cuff that persists through the game. Yeah, there may be a plot point behind why.....but even after the end of the game their dynamic barely changes beyond tolerating each other in some unholy union type fashion from start to finish. That charm wears off real fast as the time lingers on.
As far as time to complete story, I've seen some complete it all within ~10.5 hours simply because of how overpowered the parkour dodge system is allowing you be nigh untouchable, and easily skip past any enemy in the game that isn't absolutely required to progress the story.
Morti always brings it. I've watched nearly a dozen reviews and yours is the first to even talk about crafting beyond "you can make fingernails."
Also thanks for your perspective on Frey's characterization. It blew me away how many people were trashing her as "miserable" and "unlikeable" and "constantly refusing the call" when I'm like "She's 20 years old and never grew up in a safe and loving home. Constantly either on the streets or in the foster system. It's not out of character that she'd develop an outlook on life where she assumes nothing will ever work out ever," and I've never been homeless. It's just basic empathy and character writing understanding that's needed.
Also, I'm sorry you went through that and I'm glad (I'm assuming) things got better for you.
I played the demo and there were things I liked and didn't like.... For example I had the exact same problems with combat and the "open world" you did. I find this is an issue with Squeenix's modern "rpg" combat mechanics these days. Another reason why FF16 will probably be a 'pass' for me - but that's another kettle of fish.
I think I'll get the game but over $90 bucks ($93 Canadian on the PS5 Store!) is absolutely unacceptable for ANY game imo, so I'll be waiting for a deep sale. (Hey I wrote this before I got to your ending and damn, right on! :D)

Great review. I've started thinking of Mortismal Gaming reviews as the "sober second opinion" of video game reviews. 😆 Sometimes I forget that these reviews aren't just for a PC-only audience. (Though, given how the channel really started gathering steam, I would hazard a guess that it's mainly PC folks.)
Got the Best deal recent, bought Deadspace Remake and Hi-Fi Rush for a single price of Forspoken.
THANK you for a actual fair review. Most people are hating for no reason other than the lead character. The game isn’t “bad”. The dialogue is typical Square Enix/ Japanese style dialogue, so I’m not sure why people are acting so surprised. But once you get into the land, I honestly felt like I was in another world. It’s really growing on me.
But it’s defiantly not as bad as everyone is making it. Just another hate bandwagon. I just wanted to support the game, because the backbone is there. It’s a new IP that could become great. But unfortunately it may never happen. Square Enix have been having some issues, so I”m sure that has affected the time and energy put into the game. Not making excuses. Just saying give it a try if you like the demo. Stop listing to the haters.
If you are one of those people who complains about everything being the same, and then crying over this. THIS is the reason. Companies take a risk to make something new, and then it gets hate or have unreasonable expectations. Oh well.

Morti can 100 percent a 200 hour long game in a week + casually play through half of the game again just to review a Steam Deck version.
He essentially reviews games for a living and a hobby but he essentially says in the beginning of the review "focusing on the main story takes about 12 to 15 hours with the open world section adding another 30 to 40 hours". In his Steam profile page he has put in 48 hours into the game. So there is a pretty decent amount of content in the game.

I paid more attention to your review than nearly any other, since I know you put in the time and thought. I appreciated your perspective and can agree with most of it. I've put in some 75hrs in the game and I was really disappointed with the odd amount of 'hate' reviews that were out there, so this was refreshing. I can't say the game is perfect and I def agree on the point of it lacking content outside of Cipal. There was / is a lot to the world in the notes and memorial statues that you take part in that you don't actually get to see, and I do think that is a let down. I also can't say I have as easy a time in the combat as you did - but that's to be expected. I don't play games like you do. XD
All that is to say that I liked your in depth review and more importantly your reasoning for each point made, not just shouting out the same talking points I've seen with nothing more to add. This is why I keep coming back. Thanks again and keep it up.

If, at some distant point in the future, the game is reduced to about 15 quid or dollarydoos (depending on region) it is worth a look in. They had some solid boss design, combat gets to be fun at the halfway point. If you know the protagonist is insufferable going in, she is just slightly irritating sometimes.
Sidequests aren't that important for me and I don't like open worlds. But this game seems wack, dialogue made me turn away. Pricing even more.

Just came across your channel and I have big respect for this concept of reviewing after 100%.
This is probably the most fair review I've watched on here. Great job.
It sounds like it needs an enemy pass (so better AI, better movement, more defence), an NPC/Quest pass (more quests linked to the open world from within the settlement area and given by NPCs) and maybe some future DLC with more story content. Plus some PC optimisation.
The issue with that is most of those things should have been part of the game itself, not additional DLCs for additional cost to the player. It's now the norm with AAA game studios to put out a pretty but underwhelming game in order to hook people in, then promise to fix it with DLC content. The result is an unfinished game that people rightly aren't happy with, carrying a high profile price tag. Ultimately the game doesn't do as well as the corporate executives thought it would (shocked Pikachu meme) and further development on the game is either massively cut or scrapped altogether to "stop the bleeding" of a nonprofitable product.

The reviewers who understood the combat system and crafting upgrades seemed to enjoy their time more it seems. This game had so much potential to be something new & exciting. I feel the like the writing and fact that you are stuck playing as this pre-determined person held this game back. Not everyone is going to connect with this character. Much like I didn't connect with Aloy despite Horizon being a pretty damn good game. Creating your own character and building an OP magic god would have worked so much better within this world they built. This game could have been similar to a next gen Infamous. Thanks again for the great content.

17:55 The reaction of the soldiers was immediately immersion breaking. The soldiers in this clip aren't taking in their immediate surroundings for tactical advantage or defense. Nothing in their movements shouted "I'm in danger!" or "I want to live!". Contrast this to the AI soldiers in the original Half-Life (25 years ago). There's a depth of consideration and execution that you feel without (initially) realizing it, much like your reviews. Thank You.

You're honestly the only reviewer I trust because you actually complete the game. As for this game, I'm going to wait for a discount as I really want to play it even after the demo backlash from the online community. This just seems like a game that I will enjoy a lot.
i enjoyed the demo but agree that i’ll be waiting for a sale. the thing i was looking for from reviewers in order to buy it day one was that there is more open world variety and a super engaging story. it seems like it’s not fully hitting those beats but i liked enough of what i played that i’ll pick it up at a lower cost.

This is one of the best reviews I have encountered. As you laid everything on the table for us to judge if the game is suitable for our purchase. I have seen reviews that recommend on full price disregarding the platform we will be purchasing.

For people who are struggling with the dialogue being grating and happen to be multilingual, play it in another language. In every other language I've tried, all the characters, but most especially Frey are immeasurably more likeable despite being at the core the same characters with the same motivation.

Thanks for giving this a fair shot. It’s probably my favourite game to release since Elden Ring. I’ve had so much fun with it, but I do acknowledge it has serious flaws. I feel like it’s the PS5 equivalent of Dragon’s Dogma.

Having played a ton of the game I actually think Frey's reactions and dialogue are pretty realistic for a person who was suddenly thrust into a magical realm and given superpowers. Problem is, realistic doesn't always make for compelling storytelling.
Tbh the story is there, the details are just scattered about. I think i'm halfway and yes the story as it stands now is in the not-compelling-but-getting-there. I don't really mind it though since there's lots of games with so-so plots. Hopefully they make sequels, but use UE5 or something instead

The story is very similar to "Black Knight" with Martin Lawerence with a modern-day person transported to medieval times.

This is an extremely fair and well articulated review. The "Forpsoken sucks" discourse is so distracting when trying to just understand how the game actually feels to play before buying it, and frankly its exausting to the point whre I just stopped looking for Forspoken info. This video really explained well the pros and cons for the game, and Ill probably end up picking it up on PC at some point because of it. Thanks Mortym!

@@Ellimist000 it's a certain crowd trying to compare it to marvel speak instead of getting the context of what she's saying fits the narrative. People expect her to to have some deep serious game of thrones type of thing going on just because she's in a fantasy world without getting that she came from the real world and she's a troubled teen that is probably going to talk like one too.
If you think about the type of character she's supposed to be isn't supposed to be one everyone's fond of and that makes it even more realistic. I won't say there isn't cheese in the game but I think people are going overboard.
I see Debra Wilson is in this. I never realized until just recently how prolific a voice actor she had become. For the longest time I just knew her from Mad TV.
Yeah, just went to look at her wiki page and oh my goodness! She's in a lot of the video games I love! Plus I have to really admire her being able to keep working in so many areas of entertainment all these years. That shows she very talented and professional and that those industries love working with her.
Yes her career trajectory and relevance is awesome to witness. It really shows her awesome range as a performer

I actually enjoyed the demo…I love chaotic combat in games…but I cant pay $70 for a mid game…ill wait till its down to like $40. Which might be soon hopefully…given these reviews
I think the narrative issue of this game is not just because of the dialogue, because this sort of stuff usually works fine on other games or media. To me, I'm not really sure why, but the cutscenes in this game feels a bit off? maybe it's the camera angles? Especially on that viral clip of this game where the main character goes "I can move shit with my mind", and the camera just circles around her.

The main problem with the enemies that i have seen is they are designed like dark souls enemies (aka slow ish movement, not much ground to cover) while you have DMC Like movement. I don't know if the devs intentionally designed them like this or it's just an oversight i don't know.
I think it's probably due to difficulty making the magic combat as seamless as they could. Devs, in my opinion, tend to over compensate in that arena for the sake of making the combos seamless and the player feel powerful. But it's hand holdy to me.

If a game is really bad , might as well charge a high price , I wouldn't buy it if was half the price , folks really into it will buy it even if it's expensive , anyway they can alway lower the price later
