Jethro Tull !! What can I say ? One of my favourite groups of all time, although the members have changed many times, Ian Anderson has always been the front man. Been listening to their music for over 50 years. Aqualung probably being my favourite album.

More of a madman than crazy, but we all know it’s just a part of his live act. He’s a brilliant musician, ridiculously underrated, a multi instrumentalist who is an amazing acoustic guitarist, but because of the flute people think that’s all he can play. But what amazes me more than anything, and I’ve seen them play approximately 20 to 25 times he gives everything he’s got every show he plays. He doesn’t stop moving for a second, you always know you’re gonna see an awesome show when you see Jethro Tull !!
Ian Anderson (who's singing and playing flute) was once asked why he took up the flute, he replied that he set out in the business to be the greatest guitar player ever, then he heard Clapton play so he switched to flute!.

Two songs in one performance. As soon as he stops singing Locomotive Breath, the band transitions to some of the instrumental part of the song Black Sunday, from the "A" album, to finish the performance. Saw Tull three times live, first in 1977 for the Songs From the Wood tour, in 1998 they came to my hometown for their 30th anniversary tour, and they still rocked. Then they came back to my hometown two years later in 2000. Great show every time.

Iron Maiden would be among the first metal bands to admit to owing a debt to Jethro Tull's pioneering of ideas that are common in metal today (Iron Maiden actually do a fine little cover of "Cross-Eyed Mary", and vocalist Bruce Dickenson performed a couple folk songs live on stage with Ian Anderson, including a more traditional reworking of the poem that Iron Maiden's song "Revelations" was based on - fantastic stuff!) The doom/death/gothic metal band My Dying Bride seem to me to borrow almost as much of their unique brand of metal from Jethro Tull as they have from Black Sabbath and Candlemass - trading in Anderson's flute for a violinist, and pushing Jethro Tull's flare for theatrics, gravelly vocal delivery, weird but heavy riffing, and dark subject matter only a little further over the top into modern metal territory. Speaking of Black Sabbath, apparently legendary Sabbath guitarist Tomi Iommi auditioned with Jethro Tull in the early days of both bands, before settling into Black Sabbath where he ultimately helped create the whole heavy metal genre as we know it today virtually single-handedly... one wonders what might have been had Iommi joined Jethro Tull instead!) Sadly, Jethro Tull's most (in)famous contribution to heavy metal history would be the time they were at last awarded for their role in rock history - decades into their career and long after lesser bands had been awarded for far less - by getting some sort of bizarre award for "metal band of the year" or something, in a competition that Metallica seemed destined to win at the peak of their career, resulting in virtual riots from metal fans who had barely heard of Jethro Tull at that point, and certainly didn't accept them as metal. The award was so unlikely, Jethro Tull were not even present at the award show to accept the reward, because they didn't expect to win it, and didn't consider themselves to be a heavy metal band, either (having spent most of their career at that point exploring folk rock from various angles, and somehow ending up in an equally weird controversy with rock critics over whether they were a progressive rock band, which had prompted the band to write the wonderful prog-rock parody album "Thick as a Brick", which - in addition to being a funny prank - is also one of the finest prog-rock albums ever made!) Ultimately, Ian Anderson ended up having a little fun with the whole thing by promoting the band's unlikely award-winning "heavy metal" album of that year with a one-page newspaper ad depicting Anderson's flute, with the caption: "The Flute is a Heavy, Metal Instrument!" "Songs from the Woods" was one of the first LPs i bought when i was maybe 14. That and "Thick as a brick" are still my favorite albums. Reaction to "Thick as a brick" would be funny, since its in the end only 1 piece that goes over both sides of the LP and is over 40 minutes long. So whoever things Nightwish makes long songs .. doesn't know Jethro Tull, and also of course not Yes 😉 Else Camel, Genesis (w. Peter Gabriel) and Focus were other bands that used the flute in their music
We're about the same age, then. Songs from the Wood was the second album I ever bought, after Pink Floyd's Animals. And Camel needs way more exposure than they get. ELP, Camel, JT and Floyd were pretty much my musical childhood.

The first time I saw JT was in the 1990s -- after being a huge fan since high school in the 70's. Anderson explained at the beginning of the show that his voice was messed up and he would not be singing as much as usual. He'd just rely on the flute to carry the music. No one was mad. He's a good singer too, but moar floot is what we all wanted.

Glad you did the reaction. However I find your view limited and a bit lacking. Ian Anderson is a legend and the precursor to the progressive rock movement. Not a crazy flautest, but a great writer, arranger, composer and early leader of what is now modern rock music combining classical instruments with synth and electric elements. And a showman, providing entertainment to the crowds. Underrated genius.
The band was not very good early on and they changed their name frequently to get new gigs. They happen to have called themselves Jethro Tull the first time they were any good! The man Jethro Tull was basically the father of modern agriculture, inventing a mechanical inter-row cultivator and the seed drill in the 1700s. My favourite band of all time.

Ian Anderson is lead singer/flautist etc. Jethro Tull is the band - named after the inventor of the Seed Drill.
The first time I saw JT was in the 1990s -- after being a huge fan since high school in the 70's. Anderson explained at the beginning of the show that his voice was messed up and he would not be singing as much as usual. He'd just rely on the flute to carry the music.
No one was mad. He's a good singer too, but moar floot is what we all wanted.

I saw them twice in the 70’s a small and a large venue was great before Ian stated losing his voice.

Jethro Tull, the band that infamously won the metal grammy award over Metallica in 1989. This is probably one of their heaviest songs, they are usually more progressive rock combined with a medieval style.

Glad you did the reaction. However I find your view limited and a bit lacking. Ian Anderson is a legend and the precursor to the progressive rock movement. Not a crazy flautest, but a great writer, arranger, composer and early leader of what is now modern rock music combining classical instruments with synth and electric elements. And a showman, providing entertainment to the crowds. Underrated genius.
The band was not very good early on and they changed their name frequently to get new gigs.
They happen to have called themselves Jethro Tull the first time they were any good!
The man Jethro Tull was basically the father of modern agriculture, inventing a mechanical inter-row cultivator and the seed drill in the 1700s.

There was a time when they were mandatory ... maybe in the mid70's Ian Anderson was playing on the keyboards while the balloons were in fluff ... and the balloons just wouldn't burst: Ian Anderson should have played for 10 minutes until the last balloon burst ...
