    Excellent take - This is Bob Dylan telling his fans that he's going to take a step back from his "finger pointing" songs that were critical of certain folks and groups he considered to be doing wrong. And so he put aside self-righteousness and all his preconceived notions of good and bad and moved towards more introspective songs to explore the root of what causes individuals to either lose or find their way.

      Nicely said.

    • @Hexon66
      @Hexon66 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with the introspection, but I think you may be missing the overarching social commentary. The song itself is a 'finger-pointing' song.

    • @johno1765
      @johno1765 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hexon66 - I believe a "finger-pointing song" is one specifically aimed at an individual or a group. Master of War aimed at the military industrial complex or The Ballad of Medgar Evers aimed at southern politicians. Here Dylan is commenting on the inner challenges within all of us, himself included. This is from an interview Dylan gave with Nat Hentoff soon after "My Back Pages" came out. “Now a lot of people are doing finger-pointing songs. You know-pointing to all the things that are wrong. Me, I don’t want to write for people anymore. You know-be a spokesman.”

      I also believe that after Kennedy and King were murdered he could have thought more about what people were thinking of what he was saying. His early songs could have easily trigged some freak that did not like what he as saying. So maybe he stepped off in a new direction. Either or he was amazing and I enjoy every song he ever did.

    I highly recommend the rendition of this from the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Dylan’s career. Bob was joined by some of the greats of rock music and they gave an absolutely memorable performance !! One of the best vids I ever saw on YT.

      Yes, the live version from the anniversary concert is killer, with superstars taking turns pn the verses. Roger McGuinn and The Byrds did the best cover of this song, but the live version on TH-cam is a must-watch.

    Love your taste, my man...smart and on point. Yes Dylan is a great singer in being able to convey the depths of his songs...those hung up on polish or technical issues miss the point. And in fact there are a bunch of music fans who really appreciate his voice including other singers--In the all-star WE ARE THE WORLD where Dylan is prominent...Lionel Richie who was prominent in putting it together told Dyan to just sing it MORE like Dylan when Bob was asking him about how to approach his part.

    Great reaction. I am generations older than you and have been a Dylan fan since I was 15. The only thing I say to people that don't quite get it yet is that it's worth the effort.

      The 60's to the 90's were Dylan at his best. Not much into his singing now, but he is certainly a legend

    You are well on your way on the very deep journey of Dylan’s Art. There is no subject that young, middle age, or older Dylan hasn’t tackled in a masterful poetic way. The beauty is the timelessness of his work and how the meanings evolve as we all do.

    Exactly great reaction to this wonderful song. As you're discovering his lyrics at times are profound and insightful as well as beautifully written. He is also saying only those without fault should cast stones and to always keep yourself open to change like when you were younger. After his early career as the most well known protest song writer, in the mid-60s Bob resisted/refused being called upon to be the prophet and conscious for his generation especially when reporters asked him the meaning of his songs and to comment on the day’s events. He realized he was ‘younger now’, so to speak and trying not to be so black and white in his pronouncements and songs.

    I love Bob Dylan's everything! Love his voice, his lyrics, his music, i love it all. It is what expression is about. Someone with today's "great singing voice" wouldnt convey the same emotion. Wouldnt be the same at all.

  • @joshb23

    The magic of Dylan songs for me is that they evolve and change as you do. There are lines that may go by with not much impact today, and three years from now you might hear that same line and it's like a lightening bolt to your soul. They can be so dense and esoteric sometimes, and I'm sure Dylan would agree that it isn't necessary to understand the entire song all at once. Another great video, keep up the awesome work!

    Anyone who says Bob Dylan can't sing hasn't listened to much of music. You should react to Oh sister live on PBS 1975 it is probably one of his best live performances.

    Dylan's voice is spectacular, he has so many different singing styles, he can change his voice from song to song to album to album, and for the ones out there that think Dylan can't sing try listening to blind Willie McTell , it's unbelievable good.

    Bob Dylan was the darling of the peace and civil rights movement singing a variety of amazing socially conscience songs that you haven't heard yet. He sang at the March on Washington when Martin Luther King spoke. It was his music that stirred the nation. However, the name of the album you just played is Another Side Of Bob Dylan. He now moves away from protest, into a more personal and introspective mode. Not long after he goes Electric......creating a storm of resentment from his folk fan base........following Dylan's music is a bit like reading his autobiography. By the way it's a pleasure for someone like me to watch someone like you discover and be amazed by Bob. He still amazes me and I go back to the beginning.

    A very insightful and articulate interpretation of one of Dylan’s deepest song of self- reflection.
    This was covered beautifully by The Byrds and "My Back Pages" was the last single by the Byrds to reach the Top 40 of the U.S. charts. David Crosby a members of the Byrds didn’t want to cover another Dylan song. Crosby was a great talent but critical self-reflection wasn’t in his personality, many times.

    "But I was so much older then," maybe thinking he was wiser, but maybe realizing he was caught in rigidity possibly from false confidence of youth. "I'm younger than that now," maybe loosening up with the true confidence that time can reveal. Life isn't that way for everyone, but for the elders who can kick loose the shackles of "supposed to", the world can take on new wonder. All I'm sure of is that I have always loved that line. Thanks.

    The Byrds did a great cover and made it their own!I agree with you though what Mr. Zimmerman has done best is telling stories and then some of the best artists have incorporated his words and enhanced the music to another level. You may want to or have heard All Along The Watchtower covered by Hendrix.

    Yes, the singer/songwriters don't always sound "pretty" when they sing, but that doesn't mean that they aren't musical, and it doesn't mean that they don't sing beautifully. Another fellow whose voice often puts people off at first is Neil Young, and you might like him as much as you do Dylan. Some other singer/songwriters that I don't see when I search your channel, and who I think you would like very much, are Jim Croce, Joan Baez, Gordon Lightfoot, and John Prine. There are many more, of course, but having watched a fair number of your videos, I think you would like these in particular.

    The song is a reaction to the messiah status his fans held him in. He says he never wanted to be the spokesman for a generation. Many of his early songs were either protest songs or were perceived as such even if he didn't intend them to be. He wanted to break out of the narrow definition of 'protest singer' he was labelled with and become an artist. Part of that process is seen in this song. If you want to change, you have to recognise what you were and what you've become.

    Shawn, good stuff. Suggest:....."New York groove" by Ace Frehley....."Loving girl" "Shocking you" "Inkpot" "Love buzz" "Hello darkness" by Shocking Blue
    Dylan is not a good vocalist, so what, his songs sound so raw, it works, grows on you. Sticks up for the average person, the voice makes it real.

    I don't care that he hasn't got a conventional singing voice either. The music and the poetry fit perfectly, and his style of singing adds a degree of realism that grabs the attention. This one made sense first time I heard it. It's all about maturity, and understanding that life isn't so simple as first appears. It's best not to judge and leap to conclusions.
    If lyrics are important, have you heard of Lindisfarne? Their lead singer and song writer, Alan Hull, wrote some very clever and socially aware lyrics. He was a little more tuneful than Dylan , but not a lot.
