I survived 12 months in a juvenile prison in Denmark. I remember one time where I dropped a spoon on the foot of one of the other inmates by accident ... He picked it up for me and said “sorry bro here you go” and I responded with “thanks bro”. I’m now studying psychology. Denmark is a lovely place.

I went to juvenile boot camp for 6 months when I 14 years old back in the 90s. Got in trouble again and got a 2 year sentence and served 18 months. Later going to adult prison in was surprised just how laid back it was. Don't get me wrong it could get wild in adult prison but juvie it stayed wild.

I've spent almost all my childhood in the 90s in southern California in all types of juvenile lockups to the now infamous and probably now closed system of the california youth authorities, and oh man can u tell you some stories, the only thing this video hasn't mentioned is how the gang culture also plays to the guards advantage, I was in all them lockups at the height of the exploding gang problem in southern California and if people thought the gang problem was bad having they own territories imagine juvenile hall lockups with those same enemies not only probably in the next cell but probably the front and back and even as your cellie, I remember hearing that alarm go off all day with a real gang fights based on the S.O.S principle or "smash on sight" or be smashed by your gang when you got out, if the street gang problem was bad outside, detentions was even worse cause unlike adult prison where every clicks by race in juvy everything flies

I'm a Corrections Officer in Texas, we have the Texas Comission on Jail Standards, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Texas Comission on Law Enforcement, all of which set standards that ALL Correctional Officers within the state, county and city facilities have to abide by, the content of this video are things that'll quickly get people tossed in a cell here.
Though I will admit we do still have a lot of people who treat iates and prisoners like meat so sometimes they get away with it, which is why newer facilities are built with MANY cameras in them or body cameras worn.

Dude, u guys should do a video on the juvinille alternative school system. I went to one in montana (spring creek lodge) tbat was closed bc a girl comitted suicide. Its a crazy story. I got out easy. I heard horror stories about kids in dog cages and uprisings in jamaica, costa Rica, mexico (casa by the sea), and mexico (wasp organization). Kids habe been left in tents without enough food at a place called high impact. U can see more info at a montanta pbs dpcumentary called who is watching the kids. And researching wasp survivors. Many of us do not wamt tk discuss bc of the trauma and embarrasment but people should know. It's still going on.

Lol in the detention facility's (juvy) in Iowa, USA, its very common for you go be locked up alone for 23 hours a day. Another common thing is "chair time" the staff will have you sit in a chair facing the wall for up to 23 hours. Ive been there and alot of my friends have too

Spent 4 yrs between ages 12-17 in juvenile detention centers in Pennsylvania in the 80s ,Schuman center , Wesley institute , harbor creek , new castle max , with a short stint in allegheny academy. Staff they were called not guards , and they didn't exactly arrange fights, however they never interfered in altercations unless they were in the cafeteria or rotunda , they basically just sat in their office and turned a blind eye till their shift was over. cause there were only 2 staff per unit with 14 offenders . However anytime you didn't do what staff told u to do they would take u down and the loud speaker would say Mr. Emerson to unit whichever and you'd hear all the locks being buzzed open and tons of staff would come from everywhere and subdue you, then the punishment was either 24,48,or 72 hrs locked in your cell during which your meals would be served to you in your room .

I've been in and out of 7 different juvi centers from ages 13-20. I was never out longer than 8 months before I got juvenile life at the age of 17. Released at 20 yo on Parole with a 10.5 year suspended sentence, I had to make a change. Survival comes with status and citizenship. Citizenship takes time (time served and time remaining). Status has to be established quickly, and it doesn't always have to be with violence. Yo ucan gain status of your resourceful, good at sports, chess, ping pong, paint, tattoo. Skills are very important, you verter be good at something

When I went to Juvie a couple years ago, yes it was hard in the jail but it was Ben harder going back to school after 6 months in prison. I went to a small school before and went back to the same school afterwards and the kids back at school wouldn’t even talk to me. I was in seventh grade when I got arrested and the school year was almost done when I came back. It was like I was stranger to them. So sure Juvie was hard but trying to get back into society was even harder!
