      Hey bud I just did a job 8in x 4ft tile. I used spin doctor for the first time. Up to the grouting stage I was happy. But i knocked the stems out the next day on half the job and on the third day grouted and found that the spin doctors were forcing the tile under pressure and ends began popping up. I troweld and back buttered and never thought this would happen. The company set the job to install over a ardexed plywood that previously had smaller tile.
      Any idea why this happened and how to prevent it...

    Been a residential remodeler for over a decade. First used these 6 months ago on a large job for my new business. I'll never install large format tile again without these. Made the 24"x24" tiles go down completely flat and level. You can slide a 5 gallon bucket 30 feet across the tile without it catching a lip. Truly amazing. Saves so much time.

      I'm familiar with getting cement to the correct consistency as I've been a mason for too long. A question I'm trying to cut a corner and removing my tub. Just having the space now a shower with 17" square tiles. Have a marine plywood floor. Before I put down the top bed ready to tile, could I use a wall board cut to size and screw it down like crazy instead of doing it by hand? Then put the 40 mil plastic down and then trowel it as it should be for the tile?

    Hello mate, Pro Tiler from England here. Just a little tip. Tile lippage clips help on near enough flat walls and floors, but some DIYers might watch this and use these on bumpy surfaces which is when problems occur, as the clips either raise up the previous low tile or bring down a raised tile, creating air sockets underneath. All you need to do is knock on the tile and you will hear the hollow points. Also dont knock the clips out with a rubber mallet especially on a lighter ceramic tile as the mallet can leave black marks which are a pain to clean off. Polished porcelain you might get away with but just a tip. Good luck mate wish you all the best 👍

    • @AllBayEveryDay
      @AllBayEveryDay 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mart9585 I’ve been tiling 11 years. I only use self leveling clips for anything larger than 12x24 because it helps to keep the tile plum and level. The cons to using it are if the wall isn’t plumb or flat than it will cause voids in the thinset behind the tile and causing the tile not to adhere properly.

      @ValFckGoogle 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, plus he said he wasn't butterbacking them just to show it more clearly.
      I think after wiping the excess off from the previous tile's edge, he should trowel it one more time upwards there.

    • @LandbergTileTV
      @LandbergTileTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      True! keep in mind, thinset mortar also sticks better to stone, ceramic and porcelain than it does to glass 👊

    • @mr.wizeguy8995
      @mr.wizeguy8995 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope glass shows you need bigger notch for trowel back buttering tiles is just slow and stupid way to add more thinset.

    • @LandbergTileTV
      @LandbergTileTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, you are correct. Always use a half inch trowel for large format with a tile leveling system, I didn't have one at this time of demo. Also, back buttering large format is always a must and helps tremendously.

    What do you do about the little pieces of plastic that remain in the grout line -- like the piece that is real obvious at 9:17? Using a chisel to remove it seems a bit dangerous to the tile. How do you do it? Maybe just a razor knife?
    By the way, so nice of you to do this. You clearly spent time and money to make this for us. My thanks to you.

    • @LandbergTileTV
      @LandbergTileTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The plastic pieces remain in and under the grout line. They are low enough that the grout line can accept the grout. You should definitely try these systems if you install tile!
      Also, thanks for the kind words. I appreciate them and thanks for watching!

    • @oliverbull1622
      @oliverbull1622 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree there are obvious pieces that are above the grout line. This would show once grouted. I like the system but would be better if the clips had a weak point built into then when manufactured to ensure they break at the same point consistently which was obvious you were not getting. These systems are not used here in the UK if they were I’d definitely give them a go 👍🏻

    • @LandbergTileTV
      @LandbergTileTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The "obvious pieces" that you see is thinset mortar squishing through the grout line. Also, the clips do have a weak point that allows you to knock them out. These systems definitely work and make your life easy when installing.

      David and Oliver you guys are correct as many of these break above or flush with the tile surface as is obvious in this video where I count at least 4 that will not allow grout to be smooth. I use these everyday as well and after I bust them off with a mallet I inspect to see whats what and Ill either cut the rest out with a Ulfa knife or use a multi tool with the drywall cutting blade on it and cut the remainder of the clip out.

    well, I like the way these things seem to work even though I have never used them myself over the 35 years that I have been doing construction, but, the real problem is what the wall is doing behind the tile. Walls are never straight... so,you can use these levelers till the end of time but it will not really work with a wall that is not flat..It will follow the wall basically..And I know you will come up with reasons to prove me wrong...But since I have not used this system,I don't really know for sure what will happen...Next job,I will try it though

    Your air channels need to be collapsed more: you need to move your tile left to right more in order to push all the air out of the grooves. Essentially, you need to move the tile about 1.5 x the width of the groove. so in this case, it needed to be moved at least 3/8" from left to right, several times, to ensure all the air has been pushed out.

    • @RollingThunder808
      @RollingThunder808 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's better to use the 1/2" notched trowel like he said. Back buttering isn't necessary and is a waste of time in my opinion. But you need to use the right trowel. Definitely need to move it side to side. To check it I tap it with a screwdriver handle. You can hear the difference between hollow and solid. If you check for coverage after back buttering by removing the tile it may be deceiving.

    • @LimogesDiver
      @LimogesDiver 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@RollingThunder808 You ALWAYS backbutter large format tiles: only way you know for sure you have good adhesion. The width of the notch increases with the length of the air channels created by the trowel. This is to allow the air to escape when you're seating the tile.

    Aren't you supposed to slide the tiles perpendicular to the trowel lines and then back into position to collapse the hills/valleys and get full thinset contact?

    How to remove remaining pieces of the tile leveling system that are not completely broken out?

  • @EdgeStripKits
    @EdgeStripKits 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I UNDERSTAND this is a video comparing the two types of "lippage" systems but couldn't help but focus on the ridges of your thin set. Based on the CLEAR glass showing that the ridges of your thin set were not collapsed as desired (required) to get 95% coverage in a wet area. MAYBE as you mentioned a 1/2 x 1/2 might of given better coverage. NOT TRYING to be too critical but I think I would of waited and had the proper trowel so that your video was absolutely the best information you could of presented.
