I love the high end mid-century look. The Frank Lloyd Wright homes are that. Hitchcock was inspired by FLW to have a house designed in that style for the movie North by Northwest. I love that house. Exactly how you were describing with earth elements: wood, stone and lots of windows to bring the indoors in. Thanks again Rebecca for this series! So informative.
My 93 year old aunt passed away and I had to clean out her house. It was definitely still stuck in this era. I found two end tables still in their boxes tucked away in storage, brand new. She also worked in retail and had 70´s towels with designs still with price tags. What treasures.

I love mid century modern homes! The architecture is just fabulous
Just wanted to add that period appropriate art for a mid century home can be so much more interesting than just colorful geometric shapes. Other art movements that were active in the 50s and 60s include surrealism (ex. Dali), abstract expressionism (ex. Pollock) and pop art (ex. Warhol and Lichtenstein).

You know what draws me to mcm? I am 56. I have had homes my whole adult life that were so full of STUFF! So cluttered. Victorian is what I loved. Now I want a peaceful home-serene, tidy, purposeful- NO clutter!! Great example-I just got an mcm coffee table-you know, the kind with the sliding doors-low to the ground, clean lines! It replaced an ottoman with a tray with a bunch of STUFF on it! Now all my magazines and kids books are still within easy reach but you can’t see them! All you see is ONE lovely thing-the plant I placed on top! It is so lovely and peaceful to me! And it reminds me of my sweet Grampa and Grama! Their house was totally mcm!!
Yes, MCM looks so streamlined and clean without looking empty and boring.

I just paused for a minute Rebecca Lol 😂, I can remember when I had my first baby in 1979 in hospital and they actually had a place outside near the ward where we had our babies for those that smoked and that was in a hospital 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️, Thank goodness times have changed…now back to your video, I find this era very interesting…♥️♥️🇦🇺

I love the 25ft wall of windows in my 1963 MCM.
This is so my Aunt! She designed several of the homes her family lived in. And she still has many of the furniture pieces they have always had. Someday I will be willed her coffee table. I have my grandmother's mid century game table that folds up to half size. She and friends used it for bridge club in her home. Grandma G loved modern style furniture.

I grew up in a mid century modern home. Now I lean modern/contemporary with eclectic touches. 😮
This is a great explanation of how the fifties style came about and how it evolved into the style of the sixties. I really enjoyed it and felt that I learned a lot.
My parents were married in 1957, they had a little trailer that was very starburst in design. Pink, white and blue. When they had saved up enough they got a house, and then my grandparents moved into the trailer, it was a 2 bedroom. I remember going to visit them in the early 70s, and studying that blue/ pink/ white starburst vinyl wallpaper all over the walls in that trailer. Oh and it had a clear acrylic door handle on the side of the entrance to help get into the trailer that lite up at night. So cool.

TRULY … when I decorate now , it’s easier to see what works and what doesn’t , I think the best thing I have learned from you , is how SYMMETRY is so important. It really does make rooms look better planned out . I must say great respect for your job , omg 😳 it’s bad enough trying to buy what I wanted to look good and connected for my lounge and dining room. Our home is definitely more of a 1940s decor but, I would love to have parquet floors! They are so beautiful to me.
I lived in an Eichler designed home in California. I loved the atrium in the center of the home. You didn’t see the street from inside the home, just the atrium. While I don’t enjoy the furniture from the period I loved the connection to nature in the architecture.

I love mid century modern. The openness of the homes it’s no walls always an open concept. Round fireplaces, stone work, large glass windows everywhere, it’s just gorgeous!
Thank you for a wonderful tour. I came to America 32 years ago. It was very educational for me to get a glimpse into a style of a past. However, United States were never in space competition with Russia, it was Soviet Union. The evil empire that does not exist anymore. I think you’re doing fabulous job highlighting different styles. My house was built in 1957 or so. I have the pass- through, I have pink tile in the bathroom with black tile trim. It’s great!

This is one of my faves , because it actually started much earlier then ppl think .some ppl think it started in the 60’s because of all the advocado green , brown , and rusty orange and all the funky looking space ship
Style furniture and accessories . But it stated much much earlier with decorators and architects that weee very famous and also the bauhaus style .

It’s so crazy how our design styles change! When I was a young adult I loved the glam aesthetic. Then when I started to get in my later 20’s I was changing to mid century modern! ‘I Love Lucy’ has ALWAYS been one of my favorite TV shows & I was watching it again not too long ago & was just drooling over the furniture! It is SOOO good! It’s just classic! I inherited a few of my grandparents pieces of furniture that are in my home now that are just incredible!
I really enjoyed this episode. I recognize many of those pieces and enjoyed revisiting this design era. Great job.

I absolutely LOVE mcm. I have a lot of pieces of mcm furniture. My design quiz came up with contemporary and modern. I live in a contemporary style “ski chalet “ in Colorado, and I have furniture and decor from all eras.
This is an amazing presentation! You have absolutely nailed the critical elements of the 50s design style and really brought out some design features that even though I grew up in that era, never did even notice. This could easily be shown in a graduate college architectural design course. It certainly does reflect a LOT of research and expertise to bring in examples illustrating the design elements that you are emphasizing. Thank you for this very interesting and educational video.

(1970s) palette of Harvest Gold/Avocado Green/Rust...& installing one of the first-on-our street Over-the- Range Microwaves ( a GE)...a very proud accomplishment at the time!!!

I'm not a big fan of the MC color palette, but I love the wood furniture. I especially love the ones that are perfectly square in the corners.
I love the simple lines of MCM, although I usually don't go for the very iconic pieces. I liked that you pointed out the lack of hardware on the furniture. I'd noticed that on furniture from my grandparents, but hadn't realized that was common for MCM.

The only thing I like about mid-century is the windows - how expansive they were, especially if you have a pretty view! Thanks for a trip down memory lane.
Wow… so much of that takes me back to my childhood. 🤍
We got our first TV in about 1955. I remember some neighbors coming over to see it. There were three channels back then: ABC, CBS, and NBC. They all signed off to this air raid pattern looking thing and then snow, late at night. I remember we had a chrome dinette set in yellow. Our hallway was narrow, just like the one you showed, Rebecca. The rooms were small. These were the cheap houses for the returning GIs and their young families, not the MCM design. No one was building those in our city, that I knew of. We went from the little bungalow to a brick ranch style when I was seven, in 1957. Such a long time ago. I do like many of the furniture designs from that time. The Eames chair is my #1 favorite.

Especially the association of space rockets and starbursts in art Deco pieces, prints & rugs. Amazing details. I as a desiger learnt a lot. Thank you. I like seeing the different styles over time. I am not a fan of this particular style but when I was expecting my first child in 1978 I had the bold curtains in yellow and brown and the same colour cradle set it was so lovely the way it draped over the cradle. I loved that nursery as we also had a yellow youth cot that converted to a single bed, and the matching yellow wardrobe. It was so modern and bright for a baby.
Enjoyed the interior design history lesson. I can appreciate a good nod to this style when done well. I live in Palm Springs, CA so it’s kind of the jam out here. The nostalgia is fun to see. The old Hollywood celebrity homes, art and stories are great.

Fun video Rebecca! I've lived in a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired mid century home and loved it. I came of age in the 70's and was so delighted to see my bight orange enamel drop ceiling cone fireplace with my shag green carpet! I had orange and pink striped curtains and let's not forget the low framed water bed! lol Thanks for the wonderful trip down memory lane Rebecca! Keep these great iconic design styles coming!
My parents had short curtains with MCM designs on them when I was young. We had a chocolate brown clean-lined sectional and MCM oblong coffee table and two-tiered side tables. My grandmother had similar types of MCM in her home. I wish I had some of the case pieces now. My great aunt had mahogany and walnut case pieces that are still in my home. I like and appreciate MCM. A builder constructed a cluster of MCM homes near my home about 10 years ago and I wish I could have made the commitment to buying one. But none had my private back yard space and views of mountains and lake. That was something I still am not willing to give to to move to a different home. Loved the video.

Flashback to my childhood right down to the spokey wall clock and the paneling. Where’s the black ceramic panther that all my friends moms had? lol. It was a clean uncluttered look. And yes, the tv was the showpiece. You showed two very nice homes. I like seeing all the different styles. Nice.👍
Great tours. I absolutely could not live in full MCM home. I grew up in a 1965-built ranch, (I was born in 1968) not MCM style, but my mom's decor was very MCM. Turquoise couches, orange vinyl carved chair, paneled wall with wood shelving. I find 100% MCM gives me negative vibes. However, I do like a few aspects of it and my husband is going to build an MCM inspired wall mounted unit for under our TV, as well as a coffee table, as we continue our remodeling endeavors.

I have watched all these design style video's and have to say this one is the best IMO even though this is not my style you have done a great job.
This video is well narrated and made, this could be used for history purposes. The MCM is nice to admire from the outside, I grew up with a version of it, however I would not choose it to live in it, I prefer a warm style, somehow I think MCM is too cold despite the expensive pieces of art and earth colors. Thank you!
