Nice video. Actually I would like to give a bit of advice in addition, some extra steps to make it even better. Especially because this method only works for static noise, but not as good for low or high pitched noises.
Since the human voice has a limited bandwidth there are some extra tricks you can do.
It's important to follow these steps in order.
First we add a highpass filter of around 100-200hz to remove any low frequency sound and rumble. Next we add a lowpass filter at 6-10khz to remove any high pitched noises. If you want to do any equalizing, now it's also time to do it. After that we do the same noise reduction trick shown i this video, but keep it more on the safe side. The reason is because next we are going to add a so called noise gate. The combination really removes a lot of noise. Also keep the settings of the noise gate on the safe side.
An additional step is to add a compressor to make your voice sound more clear. But be careful otherwise you'll sound like one of these annoying radio stations.
@Justin. You're free to use this information in another video if you like. I have been recording audio for years and I have found that this method is close to bullet proof. All these things are possible in Audacity. I just made a sort of profile/preset and basically always use it with any voice audio clip.

Thanks Piet - great advise to take this further for everyone. Pinned this comment. We covered a similar process a while back in a video titled how to remove wind noise where we showed how using the high and low pass filters work well to help clean up previously unusable audio :)

Piet Muijs Hey, thank for sharing the tip
In your comment, u said « First we add a high pass filter of around 100-200hz to remove any low frequency sound & rumble; next we add a low pass filter at 6-10kz to remove any high pitched noises »
We have to to this correction in « audacity »?

My friend, you are an absolute god! I make short gaming movies and I've been messing around with the noise reduction settings in my video editing software for months, trying to get rid of the noise but my voice quality always takes a hit! I tried audacity years ago but none of the videos I watched ever explained it well enough. But you were very clear, to the point and easy to understand with none of the unnecessary extra fluff! After watching your video I tried exactly what you said and it has worked perfectly! Thank you very much!

Your tutorial is super helpful, Justin! I had tried Audactity a couple of years ago and found it confusing. I shot a smartphone video today in a hotel atrium and between the AC and a fountain going in the background, I had a mess on my hands. After following this tutorial, I removed all of the noise and now have a lovely vocals-only video sitting in Screenflow for export. Thank you!

Thanks again, Justin. This vid was very helpful, as Part 3 of our current yoga series (Awakening Gentle Awareness) had airconditioner background noise. It's very cold at the moment in Adelaide, and our reverse cycle air conditioner was on, so Jen could keep warm during her class. Jen had it off for Part 2 of the series, but accidentally left it on for Part 3. Audacity is currently exporting the file, but the preview was great - significant noise reduction and no air conditioner sound! Cheers again. James (and Jen).

But now I can record any time of day and I no longer have to wait for everyone to go to bed to make my videos. I did a mock test with my loud air conditioner in the background and I did a whisper test and all you could hear was just my ASMR whispering!! I am Sooooo happy! Excited to create even better quality content.

Thank you, Justin! I have two identical mics (USB Blue Yetis).. One I use for voice overs and the other on my desk in my video that is fed directly to the camera via an audio cable. The VO mic sounds perfect every time, but I discovered that my A/C adapter that is plugged into my camera is causing a hum (for which I am going to order ferrite cores for the cables to help with that) and I will plug it into a separate outlet from now on so it is by itself. Also, the HDMI cable plugged into the camera for an external monitor also causes a hum (in which I unplugged but I would love to see what I am doing if need be). Grrrr. I just figured this all out last night. So, with your help, and Audacity, I will be able to reduce the noise on my host segments until my other solutions are in place. Wish me luck!

    Namaste Justin Bhai,
    Seenu from India,
Firstly thanks a lot for your kind tips on different motivational stuff...
I have been watching you for many months and following your tips for my screen-casting. I use Camtasia 9 and Audacity for my Software tutorial podcasts (I train people on Python software) which involves screen recording and annotations. Since I live in an area which is surrounded by traffic, churches, mosques, schools, factories; my videos have been spoiled many times as I am about to finish them there is some kind of noise from the above said sources which gives me a spike in the sound file which cannot be flatten. It is taking many takes to finish video and in the due course lot of frustration I am experiencing. I tried going to a remote hill side to record a screen cast but wind is my enemy as it is directly blowing into my Yeti Blue mike, lack of enough power source etc problems. It started as a hiccup and in no time it became my nightmare.
I can't afford building a soundproof booth or hiring a studio room. I've been thinking on this for months and years on how to overcome this problem as recording a screen cast with all the background noises will not sound professional. If it is just a bird chirping sound, that's fine..but it is street hawker shouts, vehicle horn sounds, regular prayer sounds from churches& mosques, near by residents' talk, neighbor's baby crying what not.
I tried many things known to me, but nothing worked out. I am completely stalled without recording a single podcast for months crying and whining. Do you have any idea to better my situation and sound professional.
I have already seen many people overtaking me with meager facilities. At least I have a good voice and confidence but lack of motivation with the above problem is stopping me.
Some regular sounds from dawn to dusk:
5am: Azan from a nearby mosque..5 times daily
6am: Prayer bells from all of the homes around me..
8am: Hawker shouts like this....Brinjal, Tomato, Coriander.. reads loudly 15 items without a breathe.. clickhere to see.
9am: Old scrap paper buyer: Highest decibel.. click here,
    10am: Furniture repair-man
    12 - 3pm: Juice vendor..check here
    4pm: Ice Cream vendor..click-here
    5pm: Kids from school...etc etc
At one point I tried to make fun of those sounds quoting them
contextually as and when those are heard.. But I thought to
make it more professional. So I used to wait till the midnight to see
everything/everybody/every creature settled..losing sleep, next day I feel day time fatigue, lack
    of concentration, depression etc
Another problem is about language, since I am from India and not being a native
speaker of English, I take little time to search for the right word
when doing a screen cast even though I do not have mother tongue
influence. Even my confidence level should be bettered as I have seen in many videos.
Few inputs on what I am using for my podcasts..
    1. Blue Yeti Mike for voice
    2. Camtasia 9 for screen recording
    3. Audacity for audio
    4. Lenovo E470 thinkpad windows-7 64bit, 16 GB RAM, 1TB SSD etc.
If I use Audacity to reduce the noise, at the same point of audio disturbance my recorded voice also there, and its will be spoilt if I reduce the noise.........please help me Guru.
    Thanks for the tips Bhai

Can a conventionally recorded song be re-recorded at a lower frequency to create a strange effect? If so, how low could it go? I'm a writer and have a reason for this question. Thanks.

Hi Justin. Thanks for your videos. They are so helpful. I have a question and hope you can help me out. I use iMovie to reduce the background noise but the quality of my voice is so bad( I use wireless rode micro to make video). What can i do to solve it? Thanks in advance.

I’m not sure if this is for zoom meetings. My neighbor below me works for a company that is not going back into work until October!
I have lived in this building 16 years and I’m a very quiet person and it’s only me, but he has been on zoom meetings and people ask what is that noise? I’m not going to stop living my life the way I have lived it. If I want to do laundry that morning, I’m going to. He has complained about noise coming from my apartment as well as other neighbors.
Personally I think he should know how to mute background noise or either go somewhere where he can have his zoom meetings. We are not in complete lockdown.

Hi … thank you very much for this video and all videos you have done … I have a question about this video... Do you think it is better to record the voice directly to Audacity while I am recording my video?

    • @PrimalVideo
      @PrimalVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Depends on the type of video you're making, but I'd suggest wherever possible you're recording directly into the camera to keep it all in sync and to save some steps while editing
