New FT-65R owner (and Ham licensee) here... you deserve an award! I've been ploughing through videos searches and none that I found helped as much as this one, thanks so much! You prevented my FT-65R from being bounced off my living room wall out of frustration. I initially programmed it using CHIRP, but I wanted to learn how to manually program when away from a computer.
I also own this radio and have talked to a repeater that is 185 miles away at 5 watts line of site from a mountain elevation of 3,000 feet to a repeater located around 1,000 + c/o Livermore repeater group GMRS Livermore,California NOTE:Stock Rubberduck antena.. I cannot thank you enough. Very well-done OM. My first HT ever in over 40 years of ham radio. I was ready to permanently "reset" this sucker with a 4-pounder! After watching your video, I was able to fly thru the basic programming features. You are correct when you said it's easy to program. These companies are too close to the problem to understand inexperienced or OLD and out of touch end users but thanks to fellows like you who "get it" you are a blessing. 73's...
I have an ft-65 which I like, but always disliked its crappy dual watch. But after watching your video and learning the duel display dual watch trick I like it a whole lot more. I too have noticed very few in depth reviews on the lesser known functions. Thanks for your work!
Just got this radio today after being out of the hobby for about 9 years. Initially I was somewhat overwhelmed because I've been away so long. I only had to watch a few minutes of the tutorial before I started getting the hang of programming it. Now I have it programmed up and scanning. This is a really nice radio for the money. 👍😊
Good vid. I've definitely been sleeping on the presets. Quick note, T-Tone is transmit tone, R-Tone is receive tone (not reverse.) TSQL, as I understand it gets both.

I just purchased 2 of these and have been watching videos on them and I’m glad I came across your video, it’s really helping me understand the radio more. I’m going to get my HAM license as well as a friend so we can overland, hunt, hike etc and hopefully be able to use these to communicate rather than a cellphone. But I need to learn A LOT more on how these work and function and hopefully I can figure it out and learn on the fly. Thanks for this video, you’ve been a immense help!

This is the best educational vid on this radio by far on YT. You forgot to mention pressing 1 goes to the 10 weather channels. You can also easily make the light flash SOS.
Dang..missed that..correct, and holding number 6 locks the keypad or ptt depending on what you have selected. I still don’t like the baofeng light button..but it does work. Thanks for watching!
Really appreciate your video. Covers so many facets of the radio in a well laid out video. Wanted to get another hand held radio as it's been awhile since I have had one. I enjoy time in the back country, be it snow shoes or skis, or come summer, a pack for a few days of getting away in the in the backcountry of where I go, a cell phone ain't happening. Nicely done! This helped me figure out how to use the "P" keys to change a setting. the manual is not really clear on the fact that you have to get to the actual point of making the setting change BEFORE pressing and holding the "P" key you want that setting change assigned to.
I noticed you had several things activated on your screen. I just picked up 3 of these so I am still learning about this unit and about HAM in general. Pt1 and Pt2 taught me so much... I would love for a tutorial on how to set one of these up from the Factory settings.
Thanks for your instructions on programming the FT 65 Yaesu. I have owned my HT for over 6 months but I'm feeling that my definition of 'simplicity' must be different from yours! I 'chirp' programmed mine and although I scan various frequencies with it, when it comes to programming my personal frequencies into it, and then being able to find them later isn't as easy as I would hope. I realize that this is due to my own ignorance of how VHF FM radio works.... So....I'm going back to 40 meters LSB as that seems more kind to me....LOL...
Need clarification on the vfo A and B. Are you saying that you have to manually program each Channel every time you want to use them in a split display? There is no way to recall a pre-programmed memory Channel i.e. a repeater to use on a or b?

I just fired my new one up, I have a CC Sky Wave Radio set to the same channel as the Yaesu, its also a 2 meter receiver, aside from a bunch of other things. I appear not to be transmitting. I hear nothing from the C Crane except the receive meter is going DOWN to zero when I PTT......it should be the opposite ? Any ideas? Thank You sir
Great video! Followed instructions for 2M and everything worked fine. Followed same procedure for 440/70centimeter and I can’t get anything to work. I tried 12 frequencies within a 20-30 mile radius. Is there something I’m doing wrong or is there another switch I need to click?
@@design2survive Knowing this makes the VFO.SPL obsolete? I inadvertently turned VFO.SPL ON and then the double channel receive feature stopped working. Head scratching ensued for some long time. ;-)
Love your FT-65 videos. I recently bought one and I’m stumped. I was hoping you could answer my question. I’m trying to enter a repeater frequency with an odd Repeater Split: My RX frequency is 147.280 My TX frequency is 146.260 The shift is 1.02 MHz On menu 24 I have ARS turned off For Mode I chose -Rep But the radio will not accept a Shift of 1.02 MHz I have had no luck reaching Yaesu by phone or email. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
I've got a question about alot of radios I've been interested in including this one. When I'm looking at the frequency ranges the rx has a nice wide range of frequencies and the TX has very little. Does that mean I can only listen to alot of those frequencies and can only transmit on a handful of them? If so I'll pass cause I wouldn't even be able to transmit on the logging roads I would want this radio for.
Yes. Typically the higher end radios will have “wide receive” but transmit on ham bands. It’s technically illegal to transmit on anything other than ham bands on a ham radio. Logging road probably use cb..which none of these radios transmit on..that’s the “11 meter band”. You can get handheld cb’s..I’ve had them..not great.

Welcome! And great questions! 1. Power select: push side function key, then p2 shortcut key. Select using up or down key, press function key to save and exit. 2. A and B are viewable when you unlock “dual display” as described in the video. It allows you to monitor 2 channels at the same time (but won’t allow both channels to talk over each other like a proper dual receive radio.) 3. You must check with your local band plan coordinator about simplex freq use. In the state’s we have 146.520 as national calling, but people use a variety of frequencies around that. 146.420 is also used, 146.580 is used. Most are fine but make sure you aren’t using an input or output of a repeater. Your local band plan should give you the local simplex frequency designations( there are plenty available, especially on 70cm).
@@davesnothere688 the memories do not save the TX frequency and RX frequency both per channel, they save the RX frequency and some Offset. The size of the offset is limited. So no memory can save a 2 meter Rx frequency with a 440Mhz Tx frequency, something I need. I can do this however with P1-P4.
@@donr2670 Not sure I understand how saving to P1 - P4 is different from saving to a memory slot. Do you mean you can recall say P1 to VFO A, switch to VFO B and recall P2? I tried that and it didn't seem to work for me. Someone needs to detail this in a video...
One annoying thing about this radio is that you need to turn off the automatic repeater offset to work UHF simplex. The Yaesu rep confirmed to me that there is no alternative. I believe this is because the bandplan is different in Japan.

Yeah..yaesu is offering programming software for free with this radio. Buy the $20 usb programming cable (not the clone cable). Go to yaesu website and download the drivers and software. You can also download chirp.. It’s like a spread sheet where you put in your input and output frequencies, then upload to your radio when you are done. I don’t like yaesu’s software, so I just program manually.
Chirp is really good, especially when you want to program several radios..then you have everything there. I use it when going on a road trip..I program in a bunch of repeaters along the route..then delete them when I get home. I should do a video on it lol.

Adam Williamson I agree..it would be lame without that feature. So nice having the alpha tag and freq under it. Yaesu is really bad at marketing lol.

Tried to program for AO-91 but apparently cant put different bands tx - rx on one memory channel. Am I missing something ?
Shortcuts F+Px can be changed via programming cable.

You could program P1 and P2 to do anything else. I did it myself it works fine so it could be change. I'm using P1 and P2 for my local Repeaters.

Major help abt the VFO double channel receive since the priority check is very slow - didn't pick up on that from the manual - thx...
Priority is reeaaally slow..yeah it’s odd that it listens to both channels faster than priority. Almost real time.

I think a FT 65 SCU35 programming cable via CHIRP is the answer, coz, I just couldn’t find a way to program by using the radio

Is there any way to listen on one frequency but transmit on the other? I'm thinking of crossband tx/rx for satellites.
It only works half duplex.
