Please excuse a few omissions / errors in aircraft operation during the flight. I couldn't find the checklist for the M20R included in the package at the time, so I used an old Carenado M20J checklist instead. This checklist obviously isn't designed for the M20R and also seemed to have quite a few omissions. The new Carenado does come with its own documentation though to be clear.
This plane seems to have a lot more character than the standard planes. Very anolog. Really like it. Hopefully they add a lot more planes from the old series, would like a big dc3.
Yes, that's a good way of putting it! I keep saying it is immersive (which I think it is), but I think the reason I really enjoy flying it is because of its 'character'. I'm someone that enjoys older aircraft as well, hoping to see more coming into the sim in the future. Thanks for stopping by : )
Thanks for a very good review. I, like you you prefer steam gauges GA planes. Majority of default planes in MSFS have gclass cockpit, which is not my favourite.
Thanks! : ) Yes, it’s a shame they went with so many G1000 aircraft in MSFS, especially given that it isn’t implemented very well and is FPS hungry. If the Bonanza had been steam gauge, I doubt I would have purchased this. Right now though the Ovation fills a niche in the sim and, as I say, I’m happy it exists.
Yes, I suspect you're correct. Glass is probably also more appealing / intuitive for newcomers. I do with they'd put a bit more effort into the G1000 etc though, if it's going to be used on such a significant % of aircraft. Standing by for 3rd party plugin! ha
Theres a version of the 172 with the steam gauges and a garmin 500 but i cant find it anywhere. The 152 has been my favorite due to the instruments, but id like a faster steam gauge plane that still has gps. this may be perfect.
@@IntotheBlueSimulations G1000 works fine for me I don't understand what the issue is...i've seen quite a few people complain about it but I don't really get why. Could you give a few more details please ?
Pretty good review overall, thanks for this! I usually don't look at carenado planes at all, but seeing as we don't have a lot of variety right now and this plane looks like one of their good ones, I might consider it.
Thanks! Indeed, I would usually feel much the same. Such a mixed bag with Carenado. As I say, the addon isn’t perfect, but it fills a hole that currently exists in the sim and I found it very enjoyable to fly. Sounds like some people are having bugs, though from what I’m reading that might actually be the sims fault for a change and not Carenados ha (at least with some of them).
So, after 4 cross country flights from purchase point, Texas all the way to Abbotsford, BC, Canada I only want one thing, a Citation Mustang JET! Wow, what a trip! I lost my gear 3x and no idea why. Love it though!
Haha, well as they say Steve; "it's not the destination that matters, but the journey to get there"! That does sound like quite an undertaking, but I'm sure it was good fun in the Mooney (strange one about the gear though). Cheers!
I bought this after seeing it in an update video and liked what I saw, particularly the layout of the cockpit (steam gauges) and that this is 280HP versus 180HP of the Cessna 172 and higher cruise speed and max altitude and AP. It seems to fit what I was looking for and so far not disappointed.
Yeah, they’ve done a really nice job with the Ovation! Very nicely modelled, nice to fly and really quite immersive. I love the power and the steam gauges as well. It’s a shame it has some bugs currently, but I blame Asobo as much as Carenado for that. I just wish they could sort things out a little more quickly between them. Glad you’re enjoying the aircraft though : )
i just got this plane after update 5 but you cannot switch fuel tanks. i even tried binding the keys but its on off position but you can still start the plane but when fuel tank left is empty, i cannot switch to the right fuel tank
Hey, I haven’t had a chance to try it myself yet since the update, but that’s a shame! The update has broken a lot of addons (again), so I think a lot of developers are scrambling to fix them up again. Carenado have been fairly proactive with fixing these sorts of things so far, so hopefully it won’t be too long before they correct that! The Mooney guzzles enough gas, without it being cut in half haha. All the best : )
Nice Drew. Despite it being one of the oldest MSFS addons, I still very much enjoy the odd outing in the Mooney; it just has a certain *something* about it. . . Happy flying! : )
Do you mean you’re confused because I’m not following the checklist? At the time of recording this, I didn’t have the M20R checklist, so I was using an M20J checklist instead. They’re broadly similar, but there are differences, in fuel pump operation for example.
It has electrical issues. The GPS/Radio starts to fail. Was great last night after I installed it but this morning onwards its been failing or just not working period.
@@astamax Yea its really well done I just did an hour at dusk over England that last 20 mins with no radio no nav aids and no lights or light was pretty damn good fun trying to find somewhere with a long enough stretch of tarmac to plonk the rubber on. Performed a spectacular landing. I also checked out the failures to make sure it wasn't sneakily enabled which it isn't. Hopefully they can fix it soon as the plane is incredibly good fun.
Sorry to hear you’ve been having trouble with it. I’ve still only done the one flight at the moment. In fairness to Carenado, it sounds like a lot of people have been experiencing similar issues with the default aircraft after patch #2, so it may well be a sim issue rather than an aircraft issue. Either way, hopefully they get it fixed!
Nice, you’re most welcome! : ) Just in case you didn’t realise though (as was the case for me when I first got the Mooney), the aircraft does actually come with checklists etc. It’ll be in the “Official” folder inside your main MSFS install, then under “Carenado” - “Sim Objects” - “Documentation” (or something similar to that).
Figured it out adjust UAC to notify setting two and open MSFS NOT as administrator, any how made a couple of flats very pleased even re registered it to G-ACTM my initials. Thanks for heads up. Charlie
Ahh, yes, I'd heard about that causing an issue for some, but it was actually blocking them out of the marketplace altogether (so I didn't think to mention it). Glad you got it working! She's no 707, but she's definitely nicely done and great fun to fly in the sim : ) Thanks Charlie
Had a bit of a problem with mine. All of a sudden, I couldn't get the yoke to "hide" and the transponder switch stopped working . . . AND when I did get it into the air, the sim kept crashing. So . . . I uninstalled the whole package and started again. I wonder if it could be something to do with the latest patch and also the Mooney update?
Sorry to hear that Dave. I haven’t had a chance to try the Ovation in my sim recently, so I’m not sure if those issues are widespread. I strongly suspect you’re correct though. With the sim constantly getting patched, an unfortunate consequence is it will probably break addons from time to time. Hopefully Carenado will get it fixed quickly!
I think I would need to swap that infernal fuel pump sound for something more soothing. I know it wouldn't be as real but then again I would have my headset on.
Haha. Yes I've heard a few comments to that affect. Can't say I disagree with you. It was rather loud and annoying! That being said, having studied the M20R checklist a bit more now, the boost pump isn't actually used that much in normal flight it seems. Just for start, a check in the run-up and then changing between fuel tanks in flight. Unlike most aircraft I've come across, it seems it's not usually on for takeoff and landing. So it might not be such a pain after all ha. . .
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Was wondering that as well, and since in DCS (where most of my stick time is), you'll just leave the boost pumps on in literally every aircraft, I was wondering especially why to switch it off. And I just came across someone saying you wouldn't have that on in an Ovation except for when starting the engine and during emergencies.
I did a little bit of reading. 2 interesting things I’ve found. 1) Apparently the Mooney elec pump is expensive and doesn’t last very long. So quite a few guys in a Mooney forum I found, saying they use it as little as possible. 2) In the M20J at least (not sure about the R), apparently the elec pump comes on automatically when takeoff power is set (and cuts out at cruise power settings), so that kinda makes sense. Interesting though. I think it’s the first aircraft I’ve come across with an elec fuel pump that you don’t really use ha,
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Back in the late 70s, when I was like 10 yo, my dad owned this Ferrari 512 BBI. That car had exactly this chirping fuel pump sound the whole time when driving. Was kind of annoying but a bit sexy as well.
Very nice! Yeah, the pump is a bit loud and annoying but sometimes these things are what adds soul to a piece of machinery. (The Ferrari fuel pump maybe more so than the Mooney fuel pump ha).
Nice aircraft, great review and video, up to your consistently high production standards. I purchased the aircraft, money well spent. It is very enjoyable to fly and land. Like you I enjoy the steam gauges and also the details that are implemented. Thanks for the video, I always pick up valuable tidbits from both your commentary and airmanship.
Thanks very much Art! Haha well, this video was (I seem to recall) my first ever MSFS aircraft review! As such, the video has aged pretty badly but, I certainly tried to make it as professionally as I could at the time XD I’m glad you’re having fun with the Mooney. To this day, it’s still an addon that I very much enjoy - the aircraft just has a certain “something” about it. My absolute pleasure once again, sir! Many thanks for watching : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulationsIMHO this is an excellent presentation of the aircraft, very impressive to me that it's one of your first reviews. What I appreciate about your reviews: real representative flight, interesting trips, cockpit views showing precisely what you are doing plus associated commentary, outside views with adult/appropriate music that matches, proper airmanship throughout, running commentary that supplements rather than repeats what's obvious from the video, pros and cons as they occur, clearly stated,... and I could say more. Feels like being in the cockpit with a knowledgeable / experienced pilot that answers my questions before I can even ask them. As in 'what are you doing now, why using that control/switch, where is it', and similar questions that I would ask as I try to learn how to fly the aircraft and generally improve my piloting.
Haha well, you’ve very nicely managed to summarise what I *try* to achieve with my videos, I’m glad you feel I broadly manage to pull it off. I still think this particular video is a little bit “janky” haha but, one would hope that I have improved over the last couple of years of making videos, so it’s to be expected and a nice reminder of how things have moved along (and I think you can see the “DNA” of what I was trying to go for with my content haha). My sincere thanks once again, Art! : )
I just did a test, it appears it does not (it only guides vertically). How strange, I never noticed that with the default aircraft before either. . . Good question!
I have one question. I like this and its only $29. Xbox and PC. So if I buy it in the xbox mfs2020 marketplace, it will show up in my PC hanger as well? And Marketplace says Buy now, and a second choice "Buy". ?? I dont get it, what is that all about? Thanks again!
Hi Steve, Apologies for the slow reply. I don't 100% know the answer to your first question I'm afraid (never having bought anything on Xbox myself). What I *do* know, is that if one purchases something through the Steam version of the sim, it is (rather unfairly) not transferred over to the MS version of the Marketplace. My guess would be that if one purchases on the Xbox, they will see their purchase if running the MS Store version of MSFS, but not if they are running the Steam version. As to the differences between the two "buy" options; one is "Buy and Download", the other is just "Buy" (allowing you to download at a later date, should you so wish), I hope that helps a little? All the best : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations I did buy it and are a GO both, xbox and Pc, Love this Mooney however, it seems the airlerons are trimmed to the left, it slightly rolls left. Any ideas?
Turn beacon on BEFORE start. Let’s anyone approaching on foot know that you are active. I purchased as well... pretty nice! I am a real life 172 pilot, so the Mooney is pretty sweet.
I would generally agree with you. Every aircraft I’ve ever flown, the checklist / procedure calls for the beacon being “on” before starting the engine (NAV lights as well generally). You would think good airmanship if nothing else, would dictate this. However the M20R checklist very specifically states “all rocker switches - off” before engine start, and only mentions turning “external lights as desired” after the engine start, so I just went with the checklist. Yeah, it’s a nice aircraft. Immersive and great fun to fly! Thanks for stopping by : )
I love that they added the GTN 750. But they need the G3x option add on. Most of the real world pilots are upgrading to that option. And Garmin needs to add it to their trainer also. So that a company like TDS can implement it.
Hahaha, only just noticed that! Actually, you can see a head pop up at the last moment, but it looks like a child is flying based on the head size vs the size of the aircraft, so still a bit scary! : P
Unfortunately that is one thing that seems to be lacking. There is no in-game checklist and I couldn’t find one elsewhere either. I had to substitute with an old Carenado Mooney Bravo (M20J) checklist that I had. That checklist wasn’t particularly great either though, hence why I missed a few things during the startup. Documentation is definitely a weak point in this addon.
Actually, just to update. I was incorrect. The aircraft does come with some documentation, it’s just a bit buried away. There is a checklist, as well as emergency procedures, performance data etc.
Hi Håvard. The button is, I believe, located on the yoke. I however (in this video) just assigned the function to a button on my controls. Hope that helps? : )
Hello, I cannot buy the A/C in the MARKETPLACE it keeps saying purchase failed, orbx products work perfectly well? How do you get to buy anything if marketplace so difficult, I pre ordered MSFS premier VERSION THROUGH THE ms store is that anything to do with it?
Hi Charlie. Sorry to hear that. . . I had a similar problem myself when buying the Mooney, but I use the Steam version and my issues were caused by Steam. I'm afraid I couldn't really tell you what's causing the problem. At what stage in the process is it saying purchase failed (eg when clicking buy, or at payment etc)?
Hello Theo, Thanks very much. This is one of the first MSFS videos I made, so it feels pretty rough around the edges now haha, but I’m glad you enjoyed it. Much appreciated! Cheers and all the best : )
So did the autpilot got any patch already? Or is it still so fiddly? I saw your video about PA-44 and it seemed better - did they port their fix to this plane as well? Wondering if I should actually buy it or not.
The aircraft did indeed get a patch recently. I just gave it a quick test run to try and answer your question: Essentially, everything is back and working as it should now. The autopilot on the Ovation is still a little aggressive in pitch, but once it’s settled it flies V/S and captures altitude just fine. Of course this doesn’t mean it won’t be bugged again by the next sim update, so it’s a little difficult to recommend it or not. . . All I can say is, currently it’s probably my favourite aircraft available for the sim. It’s really nice to fly, fun, versatile and pretty immersive. It’s not study level or course, but it doesn’t pretend to be. If you are worried about bugs, I would hold off for now, although unfortunately this (constant updates) may be an issue with MSFS for a very long time to come. Hope that helps a bit? : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Oh that helps immensely. Thank you. I'll go for it. If the dev team updated it already they will probably step in when something will get broken next time as well.
You’re welcome : ) From what I’ve read / seen, Carenado have actually been keeping reasonably on top of fixing bugs, it’s Asobo who are then slow to release the patch into the sim. Hopefully between the two of them, they can get on top of this situation a little better at some point. Anyway, hope you enjoy the Ovation! : )
Just bought this one. Not a top end system, but I do get a framerate drop from the Cessna, esp. on external view. It's still a nice plane to fly. Could do with a manual
Yeah, I didn’t notice any perceptible drop in frames when I was flying it at the time, but I ran the numbers later on and found I was losing about 10PFS, so she is a bit frame hungry. It’s my favourite aircraft in the sim currently though. Like you said, she’s nice to fly, very immersive and I love the sounds. Re the manual, you do get some documentation included with the aircraft (checklists etc). It’s in your main MSFS folder under “official” then search for the Carenado folder and somewhere in that folder under “Sim objects” there will be a documentation folder.
Hi, thanks for the question! I’m using a head-tracking device called TrackIR. It’s great, but a bit pricey. There are free alternatives out there that you can use with a webcam, so might be worth looking into those first. I believe they’re called FaceTrack and TrackNoIR. Hope that helps : )
Hi Reece If you have a webcam, look into FaceTrack and TrackNoIR (I think that’s their names). They are free programs that allow you to use your webcam for head-tracking. (I used TrackIR in this video though, which is good, but pricey). All the best!
Ah, it costs money does it? I’m sure it used to be free. Maybe I’ve misremembered. That’s good to know anyway, I want be misrepresenting it in future ha. Hope you get it working ok and enjoy it! I’d be interested to get your feedback on it once you have it up and running actually!
Although there's been a lot of other great planes since this was released, and I don't really "need" another four-seater after the Arrow and Turbo Arrow, Mooneys have always had a certain mystique, they're a thoroughbred like you said, and I will consider picking this one up if it ever goes on sale. If the Arrow is a 1980's Toyota Corolla, then the Mooney is a 1980's Volkswagen GTI or maybe even some kind of Alfa Romeo.
Haha, well I would say the Mooney is well worth picking on sale bwc. It’s Careando, so not perfect, but the M20R just has a certain “something” about it and it’s an aircraft I still get the urge to fly from time to time even now. A very solid effort from Carenado overall. All the best : )
Were you able to perform an ILS approach with autopilot? In my case, it refuses to work. Except for the autopilot problems, though, this is my favourite aircraft in MSFS.
I haven’t tried it yet, but I will test it before my next video with the Ovation. As you say, it’s not perfect (I hear some people are having bugs as well), but it’s great fun to fly and probably is the best aircraft available in the sim currently : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations thanks for your answer ! Definitely not perfect (I believe that because of problems that were generated by the last MSFS patch), but a lovely and amazing aircraft which is a pleasure to fly.
You’re welcome! Just as an update to your original question, I had a go at flying the ILS today. The aircraft was all over the shop trying to capture the localiser initially, but by the time I’d captured the glide slope (or perhaps because I had captured the glide slope?) it was steady rock-steady on the LOC and GS for the rest of the approach. So it does seem to ‘work’ (for me at least), but again it has some issues. I think as you say, the issues maybe stem from the sim, rather than the aircraft. I haven’t had any of the avionics issues others have been experiencing. I too have been having a blast flying it though, a really lovely aircraft!
I did an ILS into EGNX yesterday without drama, but the trip up there was a bit unsettling with VOR tracking to the first VOR but oddly, was stable going to TNT without the snaking. I have to try it yet, but a gentle intercept in heading mode might help the autopilot by giving a gentle transition. We shall see !
Huh, interesting that it tacked one VOR ok and not the other. . . I tried intercepting in HDG and then engaging NAV, it still would only track +/- 10 degrees and snaking. For me it’s fine, I prefer flying on the HDG bug to NAV most of the time anyway, but I can certainly see why it’s annoying for others.
Excellent review, thank you. I've decided to purchase this based on your content. I hope we can get updates and payware to make airports look a little less sterile in the near future.
Thank you Anthony, glad to hear you found it useful! I hope you’re enjoying the Mooney! It’s a very nice effort from Carenado overall. There are already quite a few payware airports available in the sim, I’m sure more will follow. The main thing that needs fixing is AI traffic, that will give us some more life on the ground and, just as importantly, in the skies! Happy flying! : )
Yes. Unfortunately it’s difficult to know what’s an aircraft bug and what’s a sim bug currently. Seems almost every aircraft in the sim is having some sort of autopilot issues. . .
Thanks Charlie! Much appreciated : ) The livery came included with the aircraft, it’s one of the default ones. The registration you can set (to whatever you like) under the “ATC Options” tab during aircraft selection (on the left-hand side of the screen). Hope hat helps!
Thanks very much! : ) Yes, exactly! It might not be perfect, but it’s great fun to fly and it fills a niche for now, until the likes of A2A come along.
Did you forget to leave the fuel pump switch on? Aren't you supposed to turn it off after starting ? It will be much easier on your ears. Unless you turned it back on for the landing for some reason that I don't know of.
Hi Chizzy, Good point. I didn’t forget per se; at the time I couldn’t find the M20R checklist that was included with the product, so I was using an M20J checklist instead. Obviously they are similar in many areas, but the fuel pump is not one of them ha. As you say, in the M20R, elec fuel pump usage is very limited, which is a bonus as it’s damn noisy in the Carenado M20R! Cheers, all the best! : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Well I found out the hard way. I couldn't stand the buzzing sound so I started hitting all the switches until the noise turned off and later I found out the switch is just to prime the pump for start up and then turned off.
Haha, well it’s certainly a much more relaxing experience, Flying it with the fuel pump off! Quite handy actually that the M20R doesn’t use the elec fuel pump as much as most other aircraft. Means you can turn it off post haste, save your ears and still follow the procedures accurately. Cheers, all the best : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Bottom line: Its a beautiful plane and the six pack is fun to use. I find the G1000 cheat mode and too easy to use. With the 6 pack and working the gauges, you are much more immersed and it feels like you are really navigating. VOR to VOR, NDB's, intercepting radials is a nice learning experience with this plane. I built a nice rotary panel for the fiddly knobs and look forward to a flight every night.
Exactly! The G1000 is an amazing bit of kit (in the real world) no doubt, but it doesn’t offer the same experience / challenge and really I feel it just takes a lot of soul away from the aircraft. That was actually the main reason I bought the M20R in the first place (at the time the Sim didn’t have many decent steam gauge aircraft). Give me a steam gauge in the sim any day! Happy flying! : )
Thanks very much JP, glad to hear you’re enjoying them : ) More than happy to offer what help I can. If we’re taking about MSFS (which I presume we are?), it’s actually a pretty easy question to answer currently haha. I would say there is still no MSFS aircraft that ticks all the “study level” boxes at the moment, but a few come close in most areas. I would say that currently each category of aircraft has a pretty clear winner: GA = Just Flight Piper Arrow III: Overall an excellent aircraft. The only thing letting it down at the minute (as with most aircraft in the sim) is some aspects of its flight model. If you’re just going to be cruising around, the flight model is more than good enough, but you want be able to practice stalls, spins etc, it won’t be a suitable choice. Commercial Jet = Aerosoft CRJ: Again a very nice product, especially for the price. Systems depth is excellent, most other aspects are also well done. Big downside with the CRJ, it sill uses the default MSFS autopilot logic in a lot of areas and so it does exhibit some strange, often frustrating behaviours (particularly with regards to capturing the glidelsope). The aircraft did get updated recently through, so this may have been improved (I haven’t had a chance to try it yet myself). The Flybywire A320 mod isn’t a million miles behind though and it’s free. Warbird = MILVIZ Corsair: Overall a really nice rendition of the aircraft. Again, it has some flight model quirks currently, and a few systems concessions owing to the sims current limitations, but overall the systems depth and immersion is very good. Fighter Jet = Actually the MB339, T45 and G91 are about all equally good. Whilst great, I wouldn’t call any of them study level though. So in short, I would say that MSFS has yet to see its first true “study level” aircraft, though the Arrow and the CRJ come pretty close in most respects. I hope that helps a bit. Let me know if there’s anything else you want a little more info on! All the best
Hi I hear some people have been having problems with the avionics. I’m not sure whether it’s aircraft-related or sim-related. I believe it’s probably sim-related though, as Patch #2 seems to have introduced a lot of bugs, some of which are avionics-based. I haven’t had any bugs in the Ovation yet, but I have in some other aircraft. I’m afraid I’m not sure how you would fix that, I suspect it’s not that you’re doing anything wrong though. Most likely a bug. Have you tried restarting the sim etc? I did a restart of the computer after I installed the Ovation, don’t know if that helped me at all. . . Sorry I can’t be of more help.
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Hey, yeah I tried restarting the sim. Turned out I had to restart my flight several times, cause most of the times the avionics wouldn't turn on at all, some of the times I could get the radios on, or the garmin pannel, but I got everything on only once every 5-10 flights. Tried in other planes, didn't have any avionics issue, but contacting atc in the cessna 172 crashed my sim a bunch of times. I'm reinstalling the sim right now, will see if it fixes things
Sorry to hear that. It sounds like people’s experience with this sim has been SO variable up until now. I’ve had one CTD and a few minor bugs, I guess I’ve been very lucky. I see there are some people who are still not even able to download the base game / patches, have a CTD every time they start the sim etc. Kind of unbelievable really! Hope your reinstall doesn’t the trick.
@@IntotheBlueSimulations yeah the experience is so variable. A friend of mine had the exact same config as me, and while I could play the game with no issue up until now, he hasn't been able to play anything other than the flight training. The star flight button doesn't work for him 😐
It’s on the Marketplace, inside MSFS itself. I have heard of some people having issues with the Marketplace currently though (where it’s greyed out and unusable). I myself did have a little trouble downloading it, but I restarted the sim after purchasing and then it was fine.
@@Bhakti-rider You're welcome. Yes, I checked to see if it was available elsewhere first, it seems not. Not sure how 3rd party retailers will stay in business if everything is done through the store. . .
Hi, I have a problem, if I set a frequency of a vor, then I set the autopilot, the plane does not follow the direction, is it a known bug or am I wrong something?
Hello, Do you mean it won’t follow the VOR radial at all, or it drifts from side to side? It used to have a bug where it would drift in NAV mode, I believe that’s fixed now though . . . Difficult to say whether you’re doing something wrong, would need a little more detail. Is the aircraft picking up the VOR correctly, you’re using NAV mode on the autopilot I assume? Is the aircraft in NAV mode and not following the GPS? Those are a few things that spring to mind. I haven’t had a chance to fly the Mooney myself of late, so it may be that there is a new bug that I don’t know about . . . If you can give me a little more info, I’m happy to offer any help I can : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations So, I try to make myself understood, I want to follow a radial of a VOR, I had entered the Vor frequency in the Radio NAV, then I changed the NAV \ GPS switch to NAV, I activated the Autopilot and the maintenance of the Navigation. Even if I enter the frequency on the GPS and change on the GPS switch it doesn't work. When I activate the navigation hold with the autopilot, the aircraft makes a few turns but does not work properly, the vertical indicator moves left and right, sometimes it gets stuck at the edges of the indicator. On the other hand, if I enter the frequency of a runway with ILS, everything works perfectly, so I think it's a problem related to VORs. However if I do the usual procedure with the Cessna and other aircraft and everything works perfectly. Or the Mooney has some procedure I don't know, I'm not a pilot, just a flying enthusiast.
Ah, sounds that might be a hangover of the old bug the autopilot had in NAV mode when following a VOR then. You obviously know what you’re doing, if you’re managing just fine with other aircraft / LOC capture. Let me go away and test it for myself, I’ll get back to you when I can : )
Hey Saor, So I had a look at the VOR tracking, no problems on my end. The aircraft was able to track inbound and outbound from the VOR just fine. What you’re describing though, sounds very similar to a bug the Mooney had when it first came out. I’m wondering whether you’re perhaps running an outdated version? Maybe try a fresh install and see if that fixes it? : )
Great review! Would you PLS test if there are keybindings available for Garmin G530 and other avionics? (Default aircrafts sadly miss a lot of keybindings. I hate to use a mouse while flying that is why I strongly prefer to map all the cockpit controls/knob/buttons to my Keyboard/keypad/hotas…)
Thanks very much! Sure, I suspect there probably won’t be key-binds for the Garmin at least, as it is simply the default MSFS one, but I’ll take a look when I get the chance : )
Just had a look. No surprises from Carenado as far as I can tell I’m afraid. I did try searching for various things, but seems there’s no new bindings available for the GPS etc. . .
Sadly, it seems comms in 2020 don't actually work for mano a mano communication, which is a bit of a disaster really. The group referred to are FSX based at present, but have some well qualified people as ATCOs. Wednesday nights are the main session amd it is much, much more laid back than Vatsim.
Oh really? That is a shame, hopefully they’ll address that issue at some point in the future of the sims development then. Sounds like a fun group! Not sure I’d be looking to head back to FSX necessarily though. I still have P3D on my machine, so maybe I’ll look into things and see if that’s a possibility. . . Thanks for the heads up anyway!
Thanks very much! : ) I haven’t tried a cold and dark at night yet I’m afraid. I’ll give it a go myself later. It sounds like the aircraft does have some bugs (from reading others comments), however I think some of them might actually be sim-related, rather than Carenados fault.
Many thanks for all the work you put into this; just recently graduated ? from a Cessna 152 to the M20R, and have been relying on TH-cam contributions like yours to get a handle on it ; yours is one of the best. Could you please explain if you can, the relationship of throttle and prop controls ( blue control knob ), in controlling landing speeds ?? I have downloaded the IRLife M20R owners manual ( 200 plus pages ) and still not clear.... thanks again..
Hi Paul, Thanks very much! Sorry for the slow reply, I’ve been waiting to find the time to properly sit down and get back to you. Congrats up the upgrade! : ) I’d be happy to run through what I know regarding complex engine controls generally, I don’t have any real-world experience specifically on the M20R though. I don’t know exactly how much you know, so apologies if I’m covering things that you’re already familiar with, or not going into enough depth etc. As I expect you may already know; the prop controls are really somewhat analogous to the gears in your car (if you drive a manual). Your throttle control is much like the accelerator pedal, you can go full throttle or idle throttle at any time (in theory), simple enough. The prop controls, much like the gears on your car require specific conditions for specific “gears”. So for example for takeoff and landing you will want a “low gear” eg fine pitch / fully forward on the prop; this will give you the best available acceleration and won’t put too much strain on the engine at high power settings. One you come back on the power though, you can start using “higher gears” eg coarsening up the blades / selecting a lower pitch and therefore RPM. Most modern prop controls are constant speed, ie you set the desired RPM, rather than the desired propeller pitch itself. A good rule of thumb for naturally-aspirated, complex-engine aircraft (at least in the constant speed types that I’ve flown): Takeoff = Full Power / Full RPM Climb = 25” Manifold Pressure / 2500 RPM Cruise = 22” Manifold Pressure / 2300 RPM Landing = Required Manifold Pressure / Full RPM. Again, this is a rule of thumb, this could well be different on the M20R. It’s also important to note, on most naturally aspirated engines, you don’t want to set a higher Manifold Pressure than your current RPM setting, eg 22”/2300RPM = good, 25”/2300RPM = bad. Again, much like your car gears, you risk putting too much strain on the engine by doing this. To ensure this, you always want to operate the engine controls in the same order: Increasing power = Mixture, then prop, then throttle. Decreasing Power = Throttle, then prop, then mixture. You mentioned specifically landing speeds? Overall RPM selection would have very little effect on the speed itself. As mentioned above though, generally on most aircraft you’ll want to be at max RPM for the landing (in case you need to come up on the throttle for a go-around). I hope that helps. Does that answer your question or have I missed something? Have fun on the M20R! I’m jealous! I imagine coming off that 152, that thing will feel like a Ferrari haha. All the best : )
Thanks very much! : ) Good idea I think! I probably will continue to do these mini-reviews, as and when aircraft are released that I have a personal interest in owning.
For sure there will be one at some point in the future, not sure when exactly that will be though. I know A2A have the Aerostar planned, going off their past history, that will raise the bar in fidelity. I’m sure most publishers are scrambling to be the first to put out a top notch addon. Also, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Carenado allow integration with a 3rd party addon GPS at some point in the future (as they usually have in previous sims).
Hehe, it's the nature of TH-cam. The channel is still fairly new, these things take time to build. Thank you very much for the kind words though, I really appreciate it! I try my best to make quality content, and it's an absolute pleasure to have yourself, or anyone else that wants to subscribe, along for the ride! : )
OK right, that is a good feature, do Carenado sell the A/C direct woud you know, I assume you have to have an account with the MSFS 2020 marketplace? I must say I also prefer "steam driven"flight decks and A/C as an ex Flt Engineer on B707's they appeal to me . Thanks and good job on the review.
Nicely done, but since this was your first flight, wouldn't it have made sense to copy how you would have conducted a first flight in an unfamiliar aircraft in the real world? Such a flight would surely have involved exploring the envelope, with steep turns and stalls as a minimum, plus some circuit work. That way, your conclusions about the feel of controls would have had far more weight than a flight that involved virtually no turns!
Thanks. I do take you’re point, but the reason I called it a “mini-review” was that I didn’t intend for it to be an exhaustive breakdown of the aircraft. Perhaps “first impressions” would have been a more accurate title. I really just wanted to take it up, give it a go and have a bit of fun. I wouldn’t be comfortable commenting on the accuracy of an addon, if I haven’t flown that type in the real world. I don’t know how Ovation behaves in the stall, whether it has heavy or light flight controls etc. Generally I like to make content based on things I find fun to record. I want my videos to be enjoyable for both the audience ‘and’ myself. Full on reviews wouldn’t generally be my cup of tea I’m afraid (never say never though). I hope that makes sense. Thanks for the viewpoint though and thanks for stopping by the channel : )
Point taken, but I don't think that actual experience in the real world aircraft is a requirement for any payware aircraft review (there would be very few TH-cam reviews if that were the case). The disclaimers that you stated in your video would have been more than sufficient. Concentrating on aircraft handling rather than demonstrating familiarity with cross country procedures would have been more useful in my view to help viewers make their buying choice. Just my take.
Haha, fair point! Actually, I was using an M20J checklist for the vid (as I couldn’t find the supplied one at the time), thankfully the M20R checklist doesn’t call for the boost pump to be on very much at all throughout the flight (I think just the start and then a test before takeoff - I’ve only had a quick glance through so far). Enjoy it! : )
Tanks very much! To get rid of the co-pilot, click on the front of the yoke. That will bring up an iPad on the yoke, which you can then use to change various aircraft options : )
Great review, looks to be a beautiful plane! I'm looking for a fast, long range GA with lots of bells and whistles. This seems to fit the bill. Is there another similar plane I should look at first though? Thanks!
Thanks William! Yes, it’s a very nice offering from Carenado overall. I would say the Carenado Mooney more or less ticks all the boxes. You can also now add a GTN 750 module to it (there’s a freeware and a payware option) for even more bells and whistles!: th-cam.com/video/W96JQPul3Pg/w-d-xo.html The other aircraft that springs to mind and is definitely worth taking a look at, is the Just Flight Turbo Arrow. The avionics aren’t quite as fancy and it doesn’t quite have the performance of the Mooney, but the flight modelling and systems fidelity is certainly improved overall the Carenado offering: th-cam.com/video/WecwqRLIQZI/w-d-xo.html If you’re considering a twin also, then the Carenado Seneca is also worth a look: th-cam.com/video/N4R309Cy9x4/w-d-xo.html Sorry, that’s a lot of self-promotion there haha, but I think it gives a good overview of the various aircraft. They all have their own unique pros and cons. Realism-wise the Arrow is definitely the winner, in terms of sheer fun and style, the Mooney might just snag it. . . Hope that helps a bit. All the best! : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Thanks for the full reply, no problem on the self-promotion, you do great work! I've checked out your Arrow review, nice plane. I think the Mooney best fits what I am looking for. I'm not quite into twins yet, but will check out the Seneca and the Seminole soon.
My pleasure William, thanks very much! The Mooney is a very nice addon, powerful and lovely to fly. I hope you enjoy it and happy flying! : ) All the best
It hasn’t happened to me personally. I have been reading quite a few comments about that happening to people in the default aircraft as well though (after patch #2). So I suspect it might be a sim issue, rather than a Carenado issue in this case. . .
very nice review! new subscriber. i learned to fly on G1000 172 so steam gauges and all the other stuff is quite overwhelming for me personally. i enjoyed watching you too see how you worked everything. id love to see a more in depth review of how all the intruments work and proper use. sadly the documentation doesn't include any of that with the exception of the altitude thing....lol
Thanks Jason, welcome aboard! : ) Interesting. I guess as G1000s become more prevalent, that’s going to be the case for more and more guys. Never really considered it. . . Ok, I’ll definitely take the idea into consideration. I don’t know if I would make it specific to the Mooney necessarily, the obvious aircraft to compare between the two instrument types would be the 172 - as we have both versions in the sim. Thanks for the suggestion!
It’s nicely done actually, the steam gauge 172. All the instruments you have are essentially the same as the G1000 of course, but just broken down into an individual display for each instrument. I totally understand though, that it would all look a bit alien if you aren’t used to it. I was the same trying to find my way around the G1000 for the first time ha. By the way, it may or may not be a bit too simplistic for you, but I have a vid covering the cockpit layout of the C152. That does briefly discuss the gauge layout and their functions. Might be of interest : )
Occasionally Jep. I don’t get a lot of time for simming these days (what little time I do have, usually goes towards creating content), but I still enjoy the Mooney when I do get the chance to take it up. It’s by no means the best addon in the sim, but it does have a certain “something” about it. All the best : )
Thanks Daniel! Yes, Carenado has indeed fixed most of the issues mentioned in the video. A word of caution though, sim updates do often seem to “break” the Carenado products and can often take a while to get patched up again (I place the blame more on Asobo than Carenado for this). So whilst the Mooney worked well the last time it tried it, it may well have issues again in the future. Overall though, it’s a very nice product and one I still enjoy flying very much. Hope that helps : )
Appreciate that feedback, and I think I'll hold off on the Carenado products until Asobo finds a fix. So, for now I'll enjoy the JF PA28R, and the A32NX project.
You’re welcome : ) If you’ve got the PA28R, I would say the Mooney probably isn’t worth it. It’s fun, but nowhere near up to the same standards as the JF PA28. Also, if you bought the Arrow direct from JF, you’ll get a 66% discount on the Turbo Arrow when that releases. So that would be a much more cost effective way of getting an aircraft with a little bit more performance (and will still be higher quality than the Ovation). All the best!
As I say, it feels a bit light and sensitive on the controls compared to how I imagine it would feel, but I’ve never flown a Mooney in the real world, so I can’t say for sure. It feels comparable to the default aircraft, but I’ve been happy with the default aircraft in terms of flight modelling honestly. . . Also, I haven’t put it through any extreme manoeuvres (only what you see in the video) so I don’t know how it handles at the edge of the envelope. If you don’t like the default aircraft, I’m afraid you probably won’t like this one much either. Hope that helps? : )
Many actual pilots have praised some of the default aircrafts fligh model my dude. So im not sure what youre talking about. However some default planes flight models are certainly more well done than others.
Thank very much! That’s awesome, which is your home town? My family has a place in Cyprus. I used to visit quite a bit when I was younger, great island : )
Ah, ok. Haven’t spent much time in Paphos, except for an 8+ hour delay at the airport once ha. Our family place is in Nicosia, so I’ve tended to spend more time in and around there. Yeah they’ve done a great job with the sim. Some countries come off better than others, but Cyprus has come out well. Definitely enjoyed my virtual holiday there today! : P
Bei der M20R Ovation funktioniert nun der Defroster-Schalter jedoch wird das Flugzeug nicht Enteist! Also wieder kein Fliegen im Hochgebirge möglich! Grrrr.
I've never flown the Ovation personally, but the M20R POH states 'Operations in known icing conditions are prohibited'. I know there are some mods available that do provide limited ice protection for the M20R, but I don't believe this is the version we have in the sim? I'm not saying you're wrong necessarily, but that's my understanding : ) As for icing; I realise at altitude temperature will become an issue, but if there is no (significant) moisture around, then you shouldn't encounter any icing conditions? Again, I've never flown a single engine prop at these sorts of altitudes, so it may be different to other types, but certainly in aircraft I have flown at high altitude; no visible moisture = no need for the anti-ice to be on.
I like it but it's nothing I'll spend money on. FSX had the Mooney Bravo and this is too close to that. I would pay money for something like a Cessna 404 or 421. Something piston powered that is fast. I'd also love to see a Lancair IV-P - Just something that's not been in FS before that's fast and fun. Overall, it does look like an amazing airplane. Nice review.
Yeah, that's totally understandable. It's certainly not a groundbreaking addon (in fact I think the Ovation even came included in P3D from memory), but it is probably the best aircraft available in the sim currently, by virtue of it being one of the only payware aircraft available ha. As I say, I'm happy with my purchase, but it's horses for courses really. . . I'm sure given time, we'll see more and more interesting aircraft coming into the sim. Thanks for stopping by : )
Thanks for a thoroughly professional rewiev of the Mooney. One thing though I cannot, for the life of me,find the speedbrake. Could not see where you pressed...or did you use a key press. Thanks again, good stuff.
Thanks very much Dan! : ) Yes, that’s why I called it a mini-review, as I realise it was far from comprehensive. More of a “first impressions” I suppose. Good point though. I’m sure I’ll take it for a spin again on the channel, I’ll try and cover that in the future. Cheers!
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Well it helped me decide, I picked it up & took it for a quick spin last night. Flies very nicely! You're not wrong about the trim, very twitchy. Feels great on landing, floats beautifully in the flare.
@@TheTheoblad Great! Glad you like it. Yeah, the trim is more of a 'blip' than 'hold down' affair hah. It's definitely a great addition to the sim and fills a niche. Happy flying! : )
Thanks very much Johan! : ) I saw previously you’d mentioned about there not being any checklists included. Actually there are, they’re just a little bit buried away. If you look in your main MSFS installation folder, then your “Official” folder, then “Carenado”, then “Sim Objects”, then “Documentation”, you should find various checklists / Documentation in there : )
I’m afraid so. Personally I don’t have a problem with them charging money for new aircraft, if they are built from the ground upwards and aren’t just simply ported over (which I’m fairly certain is the case here). A discount for owners of previous versions would have been nice to see though for sure.
Just discovered this video after the one from Malta flight. Nice one too. I would be quite surprised if you are only a simer and don't fly IRL. Your knowledge of procedures and aircraft handling tells me you are also (or have been) a pilot, right? Where do you fly?
Thanks Cyril! Yes, I was still finding my feet with the Mooney a bit in this video, but enjoyed the flight nonetheless. Glad you did too! : ) You’re quite right, I am indeed lucky enough to be able to fly in the real world as well. I’m on the Airbus, not flying very much at the minute though as you can probably imagine. Hence why I started the TH-cam really. I’ve been a lifelong simmer and wanted to bring the two worlds together a little more with this channel : )
Nice video. Some smooth operation of the camera. I find it quite difficult to get on with sim at this time. Controls are too sensitive and just doesn't feel realistic. Xplane 11 physics feels awesome in comparison.
Thanks : ) It's funny how everyone has different experiences in different sims. I really struggled to get on with X-Plane and ended up going back to P3D. Been loving MSFS so far (though for sure it has its issues). I'm certainly not partisan when it comes to simming though. All the main sims have their positives and negatives. Whichever sim the individual enjoys, is the best one for them! I'd be keen to give X-Plane another go actually, now that it has Vulcan and VR support. But imagine I'll be sticking with MSFS overall, as I'm a big VFR flyer.
Amazing review! I was a little concerned about buying this, but this made me 100% sure! Btw, are you using a VR-headset? Because it's very smooth when you look around.
Thanks very much! : ) I hope you enjoy the aircraft then! I've been having great fun with it. Not using VR in this video no. I'm using a device called TrackIR. It basically monitors your head movements and inputs them in the game. It's good, but a little pricey. I believe there are some cheaper / freeware options. FreeTrack and FaceTrackNoIR for example.
As I say, I think that very much depends on what $30 is worth to the individual. For me personally, I feel it was worth it, I’m happy with it. Trying to answer that a bit more objectively, $30 is on the upper end of what it’s worth, but at $20 it would be a steal, so the pricing is broadly right. Ultimately, in terms of modelling, it doesn’t really offer anything that the default aircraft don’t already, so it really comes down to whether it’s an aircraft you specifically want to fly. That being said, as I mention in the video, it does have its niche in the sim right now, as there are no other default aircraft that share its particular attributes.
Thanks! : ) Completely agree! I’m very disappointed with the ATC implementation so far. I would actually prefer they went back to the FSX version if nothing else. I can tolerate it for VFR (when you can pick and chose who to talk with and when etc), but I never use it for IFR. Hopefully they’ll improve upon it in time.
Would be great if radio comms worked on the sim, like FSX. Then, you could forget all about the inbuilt ATC and use some quality real-time ATC, courtesy of groups like UK317. If you use FSX check them out.
I had a look at UK317 : ) Is it similar to VATSIM, IVAO etc? I believe these work with MSFS2020, so I assume the radio system in the sim could be adapted for other programs also.
Thanks! : ) It really depends what you want. If you really want study level, then definitely hold off. If you want something a bit different in the sim (and that is good fun to fly), then it might be worth the money for you. I would say it is an improvement on the default aircraft. I've been getting quite a bit of feedback of people having issues with it, but then again everyone is having issues with almost every aircraft in the sim right now. So it's difficult to know whether it's the addon or the sim causing the problems (I suspect the sim honestly). Also, I just ran the numbers. I didn't personally notice any ill-affects (stuttering etc) in the sim, but having now run the numbers, the aircraft is a bit FPS hungry. Somewhere in the order of a 10FPS loss for me.
I had the same problem, but cured it by NOT starting the prog as administrator. An ordinary start and hey presto! The marketplace suddenly wanted my money.
Interesting, I run as admin and have had no problems so far. This game is all over the place in terms of user experience at the moment! Thanks for the input!
So this has been released on the Xbox recently. I picked it up and it's excellent. Does annoy me how Carenado do not provide in sim checklists. I mean it's straightforward enough to find one, but it's a basic thing really, isn't it. Anyway, hope you're keeping well, sir.
Ah nice! For all the stick Carenado get, I feel it is mostly undeserved in MSFS. I really enjoyed the Mooney when it came out and still get the urge to fly it from time to time even now. It just has a certain "something" about it. Checklists? You want checklists?! That'll be another $5 please! XD I agree though; there's no excuse for neglecting little extras like that these days. . . Happy flying! : )
Haha, possible. Well, at least unlike REX, they’ve started off on a positive note with MSFS. If they can keep up this level of quality with all their new additions to the sim, I’ll be happy!
Thank you for watching! : ) FPS-wise, I didn’t run the numbers (I can have a little look later on today), but it certainly didn’t seem any worse than the rest of the default aircraft (and in fact, I would suspect it’s better on FPS than any of the G1000 aircraft). No discount I’m afraid. . .
@@IntotheBlueSimulations After checking, I am getting a fairly significant performance hit with both the internal and external models. My FPS tend to hover at 55 with the C172, 50 with the Cirrus, and 50 with Citation Longitude for the external model - with the M20, its 40fps.
Just as an update to your FPS question. Whilst I didn't feel any FPS issues in the sim at the time, the Mooney does seem to cause a fairly significant framerate drop when I ran the numbers. Somewhere in the order of 25% / 10FPS in my case. Sorry for the late response, only just had a chance to check.
Thank you very much for your input. I just had a chance to run the numbers myself and can confirm the same findings. I can't say I noticed any significant affects as a result with in the sim (I think that's why I didn't even think to check in the first place) but the drop does indeed seem to be there.
Certainly is! I was using an M20J checklist at the time though (as I hadn’t found the official one at the time of recording). The M20R checklist only calls for the fuel pump being on for a few seconds throughout the flight. So not a big issue ultimately : )
Haha, very much so! I don’t know what the real Ovation pump sounds like, but it was getting quite annoying in the sim. I didn’t want to turn the sim sound down too much though, as I wanted to make sure all the other sound modelling was still audible.
Own an IFR Turbo Mooney ( for 30 years). Purchased MSFS and this Mooney Sim for IFR refresher purposes. I saw one video noting that the carpeting on the floor wasn't up to snuff. What about the damn GNS 530. A total joke. The 2004 MSFS worked perfectly. This one is a total joke. So for gamers this sim may be of interest. But for actual flying, especially VFR look elsewhere.
Hi John, Yeah, as you say MSFS is a pretty lacklustre platform for IFR stuff at the minute. I doubt Carenado will do much more to the Mooney and I expect we’ll be waiting a long time for Asobo to fix such issues (apparently some of the issues with how the sim handles its LNAV stuff are really entrenched for example). One thing that might help your cause though; particularly if you are specifically bothered by the GNS: github.com/pimarc/pms50-gns530 It’s a freeware mod that overhauls the default GNS530. I can’t speak to it’s accuracy, having never used a real-world GNS, but it certainly adds more functionality and offers many major improvements over the default one. It’s easy enough to install and works in any aircraft using the default GNS530. Hope it helps!
Yes, I’m aware the audio needs a bit of an overhaul on the channel! Unfortunately the mic I have at the moment isn’t great. I’ve been meaning to do a bit of tweaking to chill things out on the mic. . . Thanks for the feedback.
Into the Blue Simulations The manuals are in the Official folder within your fs folder
Ah, thank you very much! I will amend that statement then. They’re a bit buried away, but just found them. Thank you.
Into the Blue Simulations Yeh quite hard to find!
Indeed, even with your help and pointing me in the right direction it took a while to find them ha. Thanks once again for your help.
Nice flight. Enjoyed a lot. One question. Are you using a trackir to look around or your mouse?
This plane seems to have a lot more character than the standard planes. Very anolog. Really like it. Hopefully they add a lot more planes from the old series, would like a big dc3.
Yes, that's a good way of putting it! I keep saying it is immersive (which I think it is), but I think the reason I really enjoy flying it is because of its 'character'.
I'm someone that enjoys older aircraft as well, hoping to see more coming into the sim in the future.
Thanks for stopping by : )
That!
Thanks for a very good review. I, like you you prefer steam gauges GA planes. Majority of default planes in MSFS have gclass cockpit, which is not my favourite.
Thanks! : )
Yes, it’s a shame they went with so many G1000 aircraft in MSFS, especially given that it isn’t implemented very well and is FPS hungry. If the Bonanza had been steam gauge, I doubt I would have purchased this. Right now though the Ovation fills a niche in the sim and, as I say, I’m happy it exists.
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Figure they replicated glass just for ease.
Carenado's Mooney is my daily flier.
Nice Drew. Despite it being one of the oldest MSFS addons, I still very much enjoy the odd outing in the Mooney; it just has a certain *something* about it. . .
Happy flying! : )
I am confused, you turn on the fuel pump when you get ready to land and turn it off after you have landed? 30:05 on and 35:45 "boost pump" off.
Craig Davies same happening here. I read somewhere that this is an Asobo/MS issue. Hopefully they will solve this major issue quickly.
Same issue for me. No lights, no avionics power ... It's really bad because I love this plane.
Yes, I’ve seen quite a few comments that would seem to suggest this. Seems patch #2 introduced a lot of bugs!
is there a way like xp11 to move the camera to left or right inside the cockpit?
Yep : )
You can just use the arrow keys to move side to side / up and down. Alt + up / down arrow, moves you forward and backwards. Nice and easy.
Made my own checklist based off of your video! Thanks for the help.
Nice, you’re most welcome! : )
Just in case you didn’t realise though (as was the case for me when I first got the Mooney), the aircraft does actually come with checklists etc.
She's no 707, but she's definitely nicely done and great fun to fly in the sim : )
Thanks Charlie
A very nice in-depth review of the Mooney. Enjoyed listening very much. Subscribed and huge thumbs up for more to come!
Ah well thanks very much, welcome aboard! : )
As such, the video has aged pretty badly but, I certainly tried to make it as professionally as I could at the time XD
I’m glad you’re having fun with the Mooney.

Does Flight Director guide laterally without autopilot engaged? It doesn't for default planes...
Hi Steve,
Apologies for the slow reply.
As to the differences between the two "buy" options; one is "Buy and Download", the other is just "Buy" (allowing you to download at a later date, should you so wish),
I hope that helps a little?
Unnerving to watch the twin taxi out at the start with no one in the seats, spooky!
Hahaha, only just noticed that!
Actually, you can see a head pop up at the last moment, but it looks like a child is flying based on the head size vs the size of the aircraft, so still a bit scary! : P
Is there a in game checklist for this airplane? Our do you get a text file in the community folder?
Unfortunately that is one thing that seems to be lacking. There is no in-game checklist and I couldn’t find one elsewhere either. I had to substitute with an old Carenado Mooney Bravo (M20J) checklist that I had. That checklist wasn’t particularly great either though, hence why I missed a few things during the startup. Documentation is definitely a weak point in this addon.
Actually, just to update. I was incorrect. The aircraft does come with some documentation, it’s just a bit buried away. There is a checklist, as well as emergency procedures, performance data etc.
@@IntotheBlueSimulations thanks then it is a buy from my part. Good job with the review 😊
Well I hope you enjoy it! : )
As I say, I can only give my personal opinion, but I’m very happy with it.
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Where can I find the Checklist?

Hi Håvard.
The button is, I believe, located on the yoke. I however (in this video) just assigned the function to a button on my controls.

Is it already available for MSFS2020? Cannot find it
Hi Alessandro,
Yes, it’s available for MSFS. It’s not available direct from Carenado though, you have to buy it from the in-game marketplace : )

At what stage in the process is it saying purchase failed (eg when clicking buy, or at payment etc)?
hello from Rhodes Greece lovely video mate
Hello Theo,
Thanks very much.
I just gave it a quick test run to try and answer your question:
Essentially, everything is back and working as it should now.
You’re welcome : )
From what I’ve read / seen, Carenado have actually been keeping reasonably on top of fixing bugs, it’s Asobo who are then slow to release the patch into the sim.
@Into the Blue Simulations what are you using to move the cockpit view? Is it a head tracking app?
Not sure what he is using. I personally use Track ir5 which this looks like. I love mine. Have used it for years and wouldn’t fly without it.
Hi Reece
If you have a webcam, look into FaceTrack and TrackNoIR (I think that’s their names). They are free programs that allow you to use your webcam for head-tracking.
(I used TrackIR in this video though, which is good, but pricey).
All the best!
Bingo! Yes, I was using TrackIR. Been using one for over a decade now (when VR isn’t an option). Great little device.
Thanks for stopping by : )
Ah, it costs money does it?
My findings as well. the autopilot is way too aggressive, pulls off the yoke and can slam the plane in an uncomfortable manner.
Yes. Unfortunately it’s difficult to know what’s an aircraft bug and what’s a sim bug currently. Seems almost every aircraft in the sim is having some sort of autopilot issues. . .
Does this beast has a prop deice switch?
Ha, not that I know of. . . I did a quick bit of reading online and scoured the cockpit, could find anything.
Great review and video, where /how did you get the livery and registration.
Thanks Charlie! Much appreciated : )
The livery came included with the aircraft, it’s one of the default ones. The registration you can set (to whatever you like) under the “ATC Options” tab during aircraft selection (on the left-hand side of the screen). Hope hat helps!
Quality vid. Nice work. Just picked this one up too. Nice to have some gauges. Good as it gets just now until the big boys get some ac into the sim.
Thanks very much! : )
Yes, exactly!
Hi Chizzy,
Good point.
I enjoy your reviews. Wonder if you could answer a question for me, I’m looking for a study level aircraft, can you recommend a few for me?
Thanks
Thanks very much JP, glad to hear you’re enjoying them : )
More than happy to offer what help I can. If we’re taking about MSFS (which I presume we are?), it’s actually a pretty easy question to answer currently haha. I would say there is still no MSFS aircraft that ticks all the “study level” boxes at the moment, but a few come close in most areas. I would say that currently each category of aircraft has a pretty clear winner:
GA = Just Flight Piper Arrow III: Overall an excellent aircraft.
All the best
hey, I followed the same start up procedure as you, but when I put the master avionics on, the screens won't light up. Any idea how to fix that?
Hi
I hear some people have been having problems with the avionics.
The star flight button doesn't work for him 😐
That’s bizarre. Hopefully Asobo are third time lucky with the patches then!
I'd like to buy this. I looked on Carenado's web site, and I don't see it. How does one buy it?
It SHOULD be on the marketplace on msfs store
It’s on the Marketplace, inside MSFS itself. I have heard of some people having issues with the Marketplace currently though (where it’s greyed out and unusable). I myself did have a little trouble downloading it, but I restarted the sim after purchasing and then it was fine.
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Ah - in FS itself... thanks! I couldn't find it in the Microsoft Store on the web at large.

Thanks very much! : )
Yes, visually they certainly did a top job! The aircraft is a beauty for sure, it just looks like it was built to go fast.
Hi, I have a problem, if I set a frequency of a vor, then I set the autopilot, the plane does not follow the direction, is it a known bug or am I wrong something?
Hello,
Do you mean it won’t follow the VOR radial at all, or it drifts from side to side?
Let me go away and test it for myself, I’ll get back to you when I can : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Thanks, it's very kind of you :)
Hey Saor,
So I had a look at the VOR tracking, no problems on my end.
@@IntotheBlueSimulations I agree with you. Anyway, it would we awesome if you take a brief look just in case Carenado wanted to surprise us ;-)
Just had a look. No surprises from Carenado as far as I can tell I’m afraid. I did try searching for various things, but seems there’s no new bindings available for the GPS etc. . .
@@IntotheBlueSimulations OK. Thanks very much anyway.
You’re welcome!
Great review! Did you try a cold start at night. I'm having some issues turning on the light of the instruments. Thx
Thanks very much! : )
I haven’t tried a cold and dark at night yet I’m afraid.
Hi Paul,
Thanks very much! Sorry for the slow reply, I’ve been waiting to find the time to properly sit down and get back to you. Congrats up the upgrade! : )
I’d be happy to run through what I know regarding complex engine controls generally, I don’t have any real-world experience specifically on the M20R though.
A good rule of thumb for naturally-aspirated, complex-engine aircraft (at least in the constant speed types that I’ve flown):
Takeoff = Full Power / Full RPM
Climb = 25” Manifold Pressure / 2500 RPM
Cruise = 22” Manifold Pressure / 2300 RPM
Landing = Required Manifold Pressure / Full RPM.
To ensure this, you always want to operate the engine controls in the same order:
Increasing power = Mixture, then prop, then throttle.
Looking forward to a Piper Cherokee 140🏌️♂️☕️🥇
Yes, I would love to see something along these lines in the sim! Hopefully A2A will port across their Cherokee at some point.
I'd be happy if Asobo would get the JF Arrow III into Xbox....guess Carenado gets my 💰
This plane on carenado website isn’t listed for MSFS2020. how?
You won’t be able to find it on the Carenado website. It’s only available through the Marketplace in Microsoft Flight Simulator itself.
really enjoyed this! make it a series
Thanks very much! : )
Good idea I think! I probably will continue to do these mini-reviews, as and when aircraft are released that I have a personal interest in owning.
How complete is that ns430?
The GPS is just the default Asobo one I believe (so not very complete). The rest of the avionics are “custom”.
@@IntotheBlueSimulations oof...will there be a module where the avionics are simulated at a decent level?
For sure there will be one at some point in the future, not sure when exactly that will be though. I know A2A have the Aerostar planned, going off their past history, that will raise the bar in fidelity. I’m sure most publishers are scrambling to be the first to put out a top notch addon.
Also, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Carenado allow integration with a 3rd party addon GPS at some point in the future (as they usually have in previous sims).
Lots of fun nice job thank you
Thanks very much Malcolm, glad you enjoyed it! : )
I really feel sorry for you cause you deserve way more subscribers! I hope you get 10k soon
Thankyou for the vid. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks very much Philip, glad you enjoyed it! : )
Excellent review. Thank you.
Thanks very much! : )
Very nice aircraft, this is must buy for me, but the fuel pump will definitely stay off after engine start 😁
Enjoy it! : )
Love this "Technical Tinnitus" ;D
Nice video, Thank You, how do you fly alone in the mooney cockpit?
Tanks very much!
To get rid of the co-pilot, click on the front of the yoke. That will bring up an iPad on the yoke, which you can then use to change various aircraft options : )
Great review, looks to be a beautiful plane! I'm looking for a fast, long range GA with lots of bells and whistles. This seems to fit the bill. Is there another similar plane I should look at first though? Thanks!
Thanks William!
Yes, it’s a very nice offering from Carenado overall. I would say the Carenado Mooney more or less ticks all the boxes. You can also now add a GTN 750 module to it (there’s a freeware and a payware option) for even more bells and whistles!:
th-cam.com/video/W96JQPul3Pg/w-d-xo.html
The other aircraft that springs to mind and is definitely worth taking a look at, is the Just Flight Turbo Arrow. The avionics aren’t quite as fancy and it doesn’t quite have the performance of the Mooney, but the flight modelling and systems fidelity is certainly improved overall the Carenado offering:
th-cam.com/video/WecwqRLIQZI/w-d-xo.html
If you’re considering a twin also, then the Carenado Seneca is also worth a look:
th-cam.com/video/N4R309Cy9x4/w-d-xo.html
Sorry, that’s a lot of self-promotion there haha, but I think it gives a good overview of the various aircraft.
All the best
Please explain the term "steam, gauge"- Thanks
Hi Dale
It’s basically a colloquialism for older style mechanical flight instruments, as opposed to more modern, digital avionics : )
Thank you, glad to know it :)
You’re most welcome, cheers dale! : )
My radio keeps shutting off? Happe happening to anyone else?
Interesting.
Into the Blue Simulations thanks! I haven’t even flown the 172 with the steam gauges. I’m working on trying to learn them better.
Do u still fly this?
Occasionally Jep. I don’t get a lot of time for simming these days (what little time I do have, usually goes towards creating content), but I still enjoy the Mooney when I do get the chance to take it up. It’s by no means the best addon in the sim, but it does have a certain “something” about it.
All the best : )
IBS >> Great review, and I'm interested in this Mooney. Has Carenado fixed the notable deficiencies you mentioned?
You’re welcome : )
If you’ve got the PA28R, I would say the Mooney probably isn’t worth it.
"Clear Prop" ... Hilarious.
Still doesn’t stop the AI from walking through it, bizarre. . .
how does aerodynamics feel? on the default planes it is very bad
Didn't expect see someone to fly over my hometown today. Great review, thanks!
Thank very much!
That’s awesome, which is your home town? My family has a place in Cyprus. I used to visit quite a bit when I was younger, great island : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Paphos, but I've lived all over. Gotta say, I'm impressed with how accurate they got everything
Outstanding review😁
Thanks Dylan! Much appreciated : )
I'm not saying you're wrong necessarily, but that's my understanding : )
As for icing; I realise at altitude temperature will become an issue, but if there is no (significant) moisture around, then you shouldn't encounter any icing conditions? Again, I've never flown a single engine prop at these sorts of altitudes, so it may be different to other types, but certainly in aircraft I have flown at high altitude; no visible moisture = no need for the anti-ice to be on.
Quality video - great review. Good work!
Thanks very much Tony! : )
Little red push switch in the left command

Ha, sorry, I just used a key-bind yes. Did you find figure it out? Seems someone else has posted the answer.
Thanks Edgardo!
@@Dr.Saavedra Thanks!!
Nice review, thanks. Would have been good to see night lighting, both exterior & interior. Maybe one for next time. Cheers!
Thanks very much Dan! : )
Yes, that’s why I called it a mini-review, as I realise it was far from comprehensive.
you using track ir?
I am indeed! : )
track ir is awesome!
VR can be fun to kill some monsters for an hour or two. But then ... oO
thanks great review.
Thanks very much Johan! : )
I saw previously you’d mentioned about there not being any checklists included. Actually there are, they’re just a little bit buried away. If you look in your main MSFS installation folder, then your “Official” folder, then “Carenado”, then “Sim Objects”, then “Documentation”, you should find various checklists / Documentation in there : )
Niceee vids.. keep support you😁👍🏻
Thanks very much man, really appreciate it! : )
So all my Carenado planes for fsx are now defunct and they expect me to buy all the same aircraft again at £35 quid ...mmmm...nope
You’re quite right, I am indeed lucky enough to be able to fly in the real world as well.
Thanks : )
It's funny how everyone has different experiences in different sims.
New subscriber here and really enjoy the content. Look forward to joining you on your TH-cam journey!
Thanks Andrew, welcome aboard!
Happy to have you along for the ride : )
So Is it worth 30 bucks?
Since 2 tickets for the cinemas are like 30 bucks nowadays (popcorn and coke extra) I like the pricing.
Thank you for the review, nice! Just, those default ATC game voices are super annoying. I have turned the ATC completely off.
Thanks! : )
Completely agree!
Great video. I can't decide whether to buy this or wait until A2A bring out their aircraft for MSFS. I miss the 'walk round' part of the checklist :)
Thanks! : )
It really depends what you want.
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Thanks for the update re fps. It looked smooth enough in the video.
Yeah, it felt totally fine.
Very nice review! Wanted to buy it at the marketplace but always payment fails. However I stated a payment method..
Thanks very much! : )
Oh, that’s annoying. . . Are you on the Steam version, or the Microsoft store version?
I had the same problem, but cured it by NOT starting the prog as administrator. An ordinary start and hey presto! The marketplace suddenly wanted my money.
Interesting, I run as admin and have had no problems so far. This game is all over the place in terms of user experience at the moment!
Thanks for the input!
Not running as administrator solved it. Thanks a lot!
XD
I agree though; there's no excuse for neglecting little extras like that these days. . .
Happy flying! : )
Suppose this is just Carenado getting their eye in, so they can flood us with as many beige cockpits as possible.
Haha, possible. Well, at least unlike REX, they’ve started off on a positive note with MSFS. If they can keep up this level of quality with all their new additions to the sim, I’ll be happy!
How is it fps wise? And do you know if we get a discount as owner of the FSX Mooney Bravo? Thx for the review! 😊👍
Thank you for watching! : )
FPS-wise, I didn’t run the numbers (I can have a little look later on today), but it certainly didn’t seem any worse than the rest of the default aircraft (and in fact, I would suspect it’s better on FPS than any of the G1000 aircraft).
That looks fun to fly!
All other critique aside, it is a really fun aircraft to fly yes : )
Thanks for the comment!
That fuel pump noise is very annoying.
Certainly is! I was using an M20J checklist at the time though (as I hadn’t found the official one at the time of recording). The M20R checklist only calls for the fuel pump being on for a few seconds throughout the flight. So not a big issue ultimately : )
Very nice, hopefully well start getting airliners soon
Thank you : )
Yes, the sim is certainly in need of a high fidelity airliner! Hopefully it won’t be too long. . .

Genau.

I tried to be fair and balanced, but overall I was pleasantly surprised!
The pump noise is a bit excessive lol
Haha, very much so! I don’t know what the real Ovation pump sounds like, but it was getting quite annoying in the sim. I didn’t want to turn the sim sound down too much though, as I wanted to make sure all the other sound modelling was still audible.
so is the gear up and down noise lol
Own an IFR Turbo Mooney ( for 30 years). Purchased MSFS and this Mooney Sim for IFR refresher purposes. I saw one video noting that the carpeting on the floor wasn't up to snuff. What about the damn GNS 530. A total joke. The 2004 MSFS worked perfectly. This one is a total joke. So for gamers this sim may be of interest. But for actual flying, especially VFR look elsewhere.
Meant IFR. Not suitable for IFR. Will it get fixed?
Hi John,
Yeah, as you say MSFS is a pretty lacklustre platform for IFR stuff at the minute. I doubt Carenado will do much more to the Mooney and I expect we’ll be waiting a long time for Asobo to fix such issues (apparently some of the issues with how the sim handles its LNAV stuff are really entrenched for example).
One thing that might help your cause though; particularly if you are specifically bothered by the GNS:
github.com/pimarc/pms50-gns530
It’s a freeware mod that overhauls the default GNS530. I can’t speak to it’s accuracy, having never used a real-world GNS, but it certainly adds more functionality and offers many major improvements over the default one. It’s easy enough to install and works in any aircraft using the default GNS530. Hope it helps!
You're maxing out your mic.
Yes, I’m aware the audio needs a bit of an overhaul on the channel! Unfortunately the mic I have at the moment isn’t great. I’ve been meaning to do a bit of tweaking to chill things out on the mic. . .
Thanks for the feedback.
A great, detailed review of this tremendous plane!
The Asobo planes are sexy but Carenado is "da porn"!
Thank you :D
Thanks very much! : )
Yeah, I mean, the Mooney in particular is a pretty elegant piece of machinery. . .
