- Are you ready for some honest opinions on lenses? In this video, I share my take on the lenses I love, dislike, regret selling, and even dream about owning. From third-party innovation to premium native glass, we’re talking about everything-no holding back. Whether you’re curious about the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8, the Fujifilm XF 18mm f1.4, or the dreamy Nikon 135mm F1.8 Plena, I’ve got thoughts you’ll want to hear.
Plus, we dive into the underrated rise of third-party lenses and how they’re shaking up the game with affordable options that rival premium brands. If you’re wondering what the best lenses are for your budget or your photography style, this video is for you.
Here’s what I cover:
Lens I Dislike: Why the Fujifilm XF 18mm F1.4 didn’t work for me (spoiler: it’s personal, not performance-based).
Lens I Think Is Overrated: My experience with the Fujifilm XF 50mm F1.0 and why it’s not worth the hype (in my opinion).
Underrated Gems: Third-party lenses from brands like Viltrox, TTArtisans, and Meike-great quality without the premium price tag.
Lenses I Love: The unbeatable performance of the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN and the Fujifilm XF 90mm F2’s cinematic charm.
Lens I Dream Of Owning: The incredible Nikon 135mm F1.8 Plena. Will it ever happen? Who knows.
Lens Regrets: The Fujifilm XF 90mm F2-selling it might’ve been a mistake.
Watch this video to get a personal take on the best, the overrated, and the underrated lenses I’ve used. And let me know-what’s your list of favorite, least favorite, or dream lenses? Drop it in the comments so we can talk shop.

The Fuji 18 1.4 is one I don’t plan on selling. It’s a perfect street photography lens and I’ve noticed I don’t miss the 2mm more on a 16 mm. I’ve gotten some good compliments on my photos with this lens.
As far as the 90 mm F2 goes, I don’t plan on selling this either. It’s great for street photography and for hiking when I want to carry a telephone photo. You can always crop with this lens, especially now that you have a 40 megapixels on Fuji cameras.
When you talk about a 33 or 35 F1.0 I don’t see the need for it as the 33 1.4 is fantastic! I use this lenses a street photography lens all the time.
I went on B&H photo, and reviewsthey say that the new replacement of the 16-55 2.8 is soft at wide open? I’m not sure if this is accurate, so I’m waiting to hear more reviews from real photographers, not just the pro’s trying to sell it.
Otherwise, I’m fine keeping the original version, as it doesn’t make much much difference on quality, just size.
Viltrox 27 mm F 1.2 totally underrated one of my favorite lenses felt a little tight at first because I was trying to shoot it like a 23mm also felt a little wide if I tried to completely isolate subjects like a 33 mm. But now after having it for a moment I've adjusted and now it suits me like having two prime lenses it's Ultra sharp it works great in low light yes it's a little heavy it's not a pancake lens I use it with excess 20 and the fact that I have a grip makes it very usable. It honestly reminds me of shooting on full frame
-Love: XF 50mm f/2 R WR
-Underrated: XF 16mm f/2.8 R WR
-Overrated: XF 23mm f/2 R WR, XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR(the TTArtisans is 8/10 for 1/3 price)
-Love to try: XF 35mm f/2 R WR, XF 90mm f2 LM WR, Sirui Sniper series for X mount
-Hate: probably the XF 18mm f/2 R
Back when I shot with the XT3 and XT30 I mostly used the 90mm for portraits. Usually preferred it over the 56mm. Now I shoot GFX and mostly use the 110 for my work.
Awesome video, grateful for channels like yours who puts in the time to test the third party lenses. I never knew I was one of the cool kids using only native glass on my x series cameras but you know what a win is a win. Looking forward to what you have coming up in the new year, who knows maybe I will finally get my channel going and pick up a XH-2S for video work.
@@Wolfgahto a win’s a win! 😀
One of my all time favourite trio of lenses are Pentax's FA 31/1.8, FA43/1.9 and FA77/1.8 (all AF glass for FF). These lenses are works of art, you should go google them to even just get an idea of size and what they look like. Pentax were way ahead back in the day and making some gorgeous rendering glass. So yeh, 75/2 is a nice FL and f stop, all in a decent compact package, I know that deal well.
XF 27 or 33mm f1.0 with capable AF would be amazing for night street photography. People often say that FF is better suited for this, but if Fuji ticks all of the other boxes for me already, I really don't want to pick up 2nd system just for that reason.
@@Yeenzoo yes a 27mm AF f/1.0 or and AF version of the Laowa 33mm would be awesome.
Right?!
Right?!
@@josephdu1952 Indeed! Laowa 33mm f0.95 with AF and WR would be a killer. While I understand that it is not an easy feat to manufacture such glass, for night photography (and arguably portraits - for some of us), clinical sharpness like XF 18mm f1.4 is not even that much desired, as ISO is already quite high - especially with moving subjects.
I´ll be happy with a 27mm f/1.2 in a compact size 😅🤣
Sold 90mm twice and repurchased. Never to sell again. Agree has a beautiful look that's hard to describe
Yup!
Awesome video. The 18mm 1.4 - I bought it and returned it. Too much focus breathing for video. For 1.4 I prefer the 23mm and the 35mm. The only third party I’ve tried is the Viltrox 13mm 1.4 - sweet!
The viltrox 13mm is awesome. I still use it to film talking head segments!
Nice list! XF90 f2 is a must have! LOVE it! Hope you had a great Christmas. Happy New Year!!
Happy new year!
Like this video a lot, a Tongue 👌🏻And I'm salivating for the day you get your mitts on the Plena, so I can live vicariously 😄
I do have the Z8 and the Plena on my (very) long term list also. Or a smaller nikon body with the same capabilities but with the Z8 screen mechanism, not the Z6iii. We're all different, I know, but it really bugs me having the screen to the side when I just need a bit of angle/tilt.
I hear you, thanks for watching 😀
i always like to get native glass first since there is usually better performance when it comes to things like minimum focusing distance or high contrast situations.
but those 3rd party lenses are coming in hot - near native performance for little compromise
Exactly!
Hy to everyone's using a Fujifilm xs20. Does anyone knows why I can't see the aperture value when I'm shooting videos??? I set on"S" mode and it disappear the F value!😕
I don't shoot my 90/f2 often, but I'm experienced enough to recognize I should NEVER sell it. The new 16-55 ii is a fantastic lens - sooooo much lighter than the original and focus seems to be snappier too. Honorable mention should go to the Sony 24-50 f/2.8 lens - it's perfect for the A7C line.
What are your thoughts on the tamron 20-40mm?
@@Iamtongue I tried it out at my local camera store and wasn't really impressed. Lack of aperture ring is a deal breaker for me personally. Stabilization isn't nearly as good either for 3rd party lenses on Sony bodies. I don't think it's a bad lens, but the 24-50 is worth the extra $$ to me.
Which one you prefer more 90mm or Viltrox 75mm F1.2 ?
90 if I have room.
My first Fuji Lens was the 56 f1.2 wr and I love it but I just got the 90 f2 and I love it even more!!! Found good deals on both (Used). Couldn't pass it up.
@@Mik.Dominguez amazing! Cant say no on some
Good deals
What do you think about 33mm 1.4 fuji?
@@metehangezer98 it’s good 👍
Have you tried the nikon zf? I got the voigtlander 40mm f1.2, its crazy nice for portraits.
I haven’t. Hopefully soon
@@Jgheiler z mount for 40f1.2 is available?
@@Commonyou7149 sure.
18mm 1.4 is Fujifilm's best lens. 16mm has too much distortion. 18mm is right in the ballpark. Focuses just as close. Sharper, faster.
