Jaywick: Most deprived place in England (2010) - BBC News

  • Six months ago in a by-election, Clacton became the first constituency to elect a UKIP MP - heralding a "coming of age" for the party, according to its leader Nigel Farage. Like all constituencies, Clacton has its own set of particular needs. But in 2010, one town within the constituency, Jaywick, was named the most deprived place in England, in the Department for Communities' indices of deprivation.
    It is not a label of which the people of the town are proud - many would like the politicians that represent them to help turn around the fortunes of their home. BBC News visited the town to find the part politics plays in people's day-to-day lives. The candidates for the Clacton constituency are:
    Douglas Carswell (UKIP)
    David Grace (Liberal Democrat)
    Chris Southall (Green)
    Giles Watling (Conservative)
    Tim Young (Labour)
    Video journalist: Ed Ram

      No it was already dying from the war onwards , Londoners who owned most of the beach chalets , which these homes are , didn’t go down and maintain the wooden chalets in the war( it was a huge no go area, mined beach and patrolled and kept empty to prevent invasion) . and post war the decline really started. Then a lot of London gangs bought up the private chalets and rented them out to people who couldn’t get housing elsewhere , still the Kray family are major landlords in Jaywick and I met Charlie Kray, whilst I was working there. The gangs generally rent them out at exorbitant rent to those who can’t rent property else where due to rent arrears or antisocial behaviour and do nothing to maintain the private roads or chalets, the majority of which have outside toilets and are deemed unfit for human habitation. They are proper slums, one room for cooking, sleeping , and eating in , no bathroom and an outside loo.
      Don’t blame foreign holidays blame people like this women who owns the condemned chalets , rents them out and doesn’t maintain the private roads she is responsible for and them blames refugees. You couldn’t make it up!

  • @dianeshelton9592
    @dianeshelton9592 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I used to work there in 2018. Bear in mind all these roads and houses are privately owned. A lot by the Kray family or other London gangsters. The properties have been condemned as not fit for humans to live in. Yet the owners refuse to stop renting them out , mostly to people who are unable to rent else where as they have defaulted on previous rents or have anti social behavioural writ against them. So now you have a situation where the feckless will pay exorbitant prices in rent to gangsters ( that they won’t dare default on their rent to ) living in homes not fit for human habitation.
    Clacton council finally won an on going battle to refuse to pay housing benefit to anyone living there. As the homes are not fit for humans to live in and so hopefully the private landlords will now sell the properties and the council can get on with regeneration of the area.
    The silly woman writing to the council about the dangerous state of the roads is an idiot, they are private roads , the council has no sway over them at all and she calls her self a landlady, I bet she owns a few of those rat infested dumps and rents them out and is therefore financially responsible for mending the flipping road herself. Talk about not knowing anything about what’s going on. And apparently she thinks migrants are the problem, where as she herself is perpetuating the problems.
    The council have been desperate for years to buy up the properties , as you can see from its position it is very valuable land yet the owners find they make more from being slum landlords than they would form the sale of the land.
    In the 1930s when these beach huts were built it was really a fashionable place to visit from London, then the wooden structures deteriorated during the war, when Londoners didn’t visit , by the 50s the place had really begun to go down , then the Krays etc got involved and there you have it a self perpetuating mess that people blame the council for when the fact of the matter is the blame is greedy private owners of the slums and private roads.

    • @fedup8347

Exactly the sort of thing which has been happening in Barking, Dagenham (outer East London) for years. A lot of people in Jaywick and Clacton are ex-East Londoners, they moved out to escape multiculturalism. In other words: White Flight. The White British population has declined rapidly in Greater London over the past 10-20 years, so no wonder they move out to White areas of Essex and UKIP are popular there.

      Churchill wanted us to be a USA lapdog and slave to the international bankers. That's why the rest of north Europe and Scandinavia have less differences between rich and poor and better pensions.
      A lot of northern towns still feel the effects of when Thatcher did the opposite to Germany in the 80s by making millions of people unemployed, and then blaming those people for losing hope when their only options were supermarket shelf stacking. Tories left us with a USA style economy encouraging people to be yuppies, to live a life of greed and debt, but it all crashed by the early 90s, and crashes every few years since. That was why Tony Blair wanted to encourage more people than ever into university, to give young people from those destroyed communities hope.

    • @suzannel8926
      @suzannel8926 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have a generation who are still brainwashed by WWII propaganda, and think Germany wanted war with Britain before Britain declared war on Germany. They would cheer the leaders like heroes, not being told until the 1950s the government had the code so would hide in bunkers, while the people were bombed.
      I'm English and think anti EU Tories are the same as Thatcher, when she didn't like the EU preventing Tories mistreating British people, because of the EU saying workers should have enough breaks and genetically modified ingredients should be labelled on food.
      Then the secret service whistle blower David Shayler told how Thatcher was going along with the USA using British money to fund Al Qaeda in Libya against Gaddafi. A country people didn't pay household bills, while more old British people were dying of the cold than before Tories stole and sold off public owned energy. It wasn't until later that Labour introduced cold weather payments to help stop old people dying.
      It might not seem a nice idea for the UK to split up, but England has always been run by the international bankers who need our economy to stay closely linked with USA banks, encouraging everybody to live in greed and debt. It has become worse since the 1980s, when Tories did the opposite of Germany by treating workers like dirt, making millions of people unemployed and left us an economy based on little else but encouraging everybody to live in debt, for our economy to crash by the early 90s when many couldn't pay back the debts, and crashes every few years since after the USA. Then Tories use the crashes as an excuse to make anybody suffer not any use at being a slave for the upper classes, bankers and Tory tax dodging donors.
      Don't expect our media to point out the truth, trying to get idiots to be all nationalist over fishing, while we have the biggest differences between rich and poor and worst pensions in north Europe. What media has bothered to remind our people that our own government funded Islamic extremists in Libya, after our own people were shot in Tunisia and blown up in Manchester by extremists who trained in Libya after Gaddafi?? England is full of Sun reading idiots who call others lefties as an insult, while they expect everybody else to pay for their children and cheer on the NHS, not realising the NHS is a lefty idea. Because they heard some Americans online using the tern to insult multiculturalism, when the USA and other capitalist countries promote multiculturalism more than any lefty country.
      People suddenly care what the EU thinks after voting to leave, now the international bankers can use Russia as an excuse to start WWIII. Forgetting Ireland had to spend years fighting to leave the UK.
      How asleep do you have to be to keep voting in governments that cause university students to be £50,000 in debt, while it's free in Scotland?
      If the UK all split up, the international bankers/war machine wouldn't see us as any use at being a USA lapdog, and might go away to the USA, and English people will see how Scottish politicians look after their people like the rest of north Europe and Scandinavia, and then want to be the same. That's if it isn't too late and English people aren't dumbed down beyond help.

    If it wasn't for people moving to the UK from abroad, there would be nobody to take the jobs Brits don't seem to want to do & my hospital stay (with COVID) wouldn't have been so positive. The nurses from abroad made up most of the nicest nurses while I was desperately ill & incontinent! It was a couple of British nurses who complained & made for a couple of unpleasant nights for me in hospital when they ignored my "fall risk" status & put me at risk! If it wasn't for the lovely African nurse, I would have been at even more risk on one of the nights those nasty nurses were on shift! The African nurse also blew the whistle on them! That's what I call a good nurse!

I'm also thinking of people who continually have children so that they won't have to work. I'm also thinking about those who enter our nation knowing or caring diddly squat about what it takes to survive in the western world. Just give us twenty years and even Detroit will look like the land of milk and honey. Socialism does not work. Handouts do not work. Job creation in a climate that encourages job creation does.

    This documentary is from 2010 and it’s 2022 at the time I am writing this comment and from what I gathered this place was built as a seaside resort in the 1930’s for Londoners and I think that over time people lost interest and started to go abroad to experience new things.
    The newest information I got is that very little improvement was made, if the place is private, roads are private and so on then I think it’s up to the owners to find the funds to do something about it.
    I honestly don’t think it will ever go back to what it was but I could be wrong.
    Don’t get me wrong but to me this place looks like somewhere in Eastern Europe or worse.

      @unregistredhypercam 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's plenty of depravation in the South. Been to Poole recently? It's a ghost town. Even McDonalds and Burger King have left. It's never been a great town, but it's really gone very sharply downhill over the last few years. To be honest everywhere went downhill during the 2010s, but I mention Poole's decline as it is especially severe. It's probably worse than Boscombe now, and that's the heroin capital of England.
      The South East has lots of areas that are pretty rough. Much of this is due to industry that collapsed, just like what happened elsewhere, only it happened more slowly so nobody noticed. How much shipbuilding goes on in Portsmouth now? Seaside towns went out of fashion over 40 years ago due to cheap flights abroad, so places like Hastings are a total dump. This probably didn't help Jaywick either.
      The South West has its own problems too. The problems the younger generations have affording property here are amplified compared to the rest of the country as wages are both very low and prices very high. Coronavirus is set to decimate the economy more here than anywhere else as it's all tourism based. It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

This is not an issue about immigrants living in Jaywick, nor people moving out of London to live in Jaywick because London is 'full' of immigrants. This is a lack of business and employment, and the slide of what once was a pleasant area into a slum. Additionally, the 'low cost' housing is being bought up by investors to let out to people on benefits as they receive a set income from the DWP on their behalf. Most uk resorts are a hideous nightmare throwback from the 1940s full to the brim with tacky slot machine arcades, stoney beaches and a poverty ridden populations. Our resorts would be improved by simply bulldozing them and replacing most of the buildings with a few palm trees and classy cafes and imported sand.
