People always like to shit on how Naruto tries to empathize with the villains, but this scene is what made him. A cold blooded killer who people called a demon was a man who cared deeply for his subordinate. Naruto believes even the most evil of people have good inside of them
And he's not wrong. With the exception of characters like Zetsu, Hidan, & Kakuzu, basically every villain is sympathetic in some way. Even Orochimaru wound up the way he did mostly because he missed his parents and started looking for a way to get them back, and that just turned into a slippery slope as he fell deeper and deeper into madness.
This is what bleach needed now even with the new arc I'm still not getting that, even sadie forgave itachi when he learned the truth. This is why naruto is popular world wide and why people want a naruto remake to experience this all over again with up to date animation. I'm probably gonna shed even more tears when the blood an the tears just pop out of the TV because of that remake.
He wasn’t really trying to empathize with Zabuza here. He was shocked and angry that Zabuza wasn’t mad at how they treated Gato. He empathized with Haku, not Zabuza. Naruto empathized with Gaara, but that didn’t stop him from trying to beat Gaara and possibly kill him to protect his friends.
What an incredible episode.. Amazing opening arc. It gives us a great example of how deep and diverse this show is. It can have thrilling action scenes, heavy drama stuff and goofy comedy. This character is one of the best written characters in all the history of manga and film and series scripts...
I greatly appreciate uploading these in order. Like other channels are fine uploading reactions to whatever and people only have what's available.. but it's nice going through the story and seeing everyone's reactions as it unfolds. I remember when I first started watching - and it's not like Naruto is the most emotional anime or whatever - but Zabuza caving and expression his emotions and all that for Haku really helped me open up the mindset that villains aren't always just villains. It also set the standards of the Naruto Universe in that there are rarely outright "evil" characters. They are people that had experiences in life - and as such had different perspectives. There weren't too many shounen anime that played around with that concept.
Zabuza is a perfect example of how cruel the world of Naruto is. For every ninja like Naruto, who has a team and friends, you have one like Zabuza, who had nothing, and became a demon to survive.
Dude, there isn't a time I watch the scene of Zabuza saying his goodbyes to Haku that my eyes doesn't get filled with tears. It was the most emocionating and sad thing that I watched on my childhood, and even now gets me, it's just too perfect.

If Zabuza & Haku were to have survived and possibly joined Konoha (which could cause a bit of anger from Kirigakure to be directed at Konoha for a while for sheltering one of their rogue ninja as a possible plot point), I could easily see Zabuza working very well alongside both Kakashi & Gai. While Haku could easily have become a Genin for Konoha....and maybe Haku could even have gone with Naruto to train with Jiraiya during the timeskip? Hell, we could possibly have even seen Haku take part in the Chunin Exams, where he could have shown up to protect Sakura, Sasuke, & Naruto from the Sound Trio (Dosu, Zaku, & Kin). I mean, imagine if Zabuza had joined in on the Gaara Rescue Arc in Shippuden? We could have seen Zabuza Fight Kisame rather than (or alongside) Gai.
Imagine how differently the story could have gone had Haku & Zabuza survived this arc? Especially if they were to have chosen to join Konoha after Naruto managed to "Talk no Jutsu" Zabuza. He could have been a huge help (as would Haku) in arcs like the Chunin Exams (where Zabuza & Haku could have shown up to try and back up Naruto, Sakura, & Sasuke against Gaara & Shukaku) & the Sasuke Retrieval Arc (where Haku could have saved Neji from Kidomaru & Zabuza could have saved Choji from Jirobo). And then in Shippuden they could easily have grown even stronger during the time-skip. Such an eventuality could even have led to an arc involving Konoha dealing with Kirigakure being "upset" that they took in one of their rogue ninja (Zabuza) rather than just turning him over to them, and could even have served to introduce Mei Terumi earlier than normal.
