I love this. You explain everything so well. Wish me luck for tomorrow! I have to read a whole 3 pages and identify different types of figurative language on front of 30 7th graders -_-
Thank you so much for the great video. I’m actually from Iran(born and raised) and was struggling with this subject in Eng literature class. Very helpful video, appreciate it

Terri Landry Pele is a soccer player (very popular ) and he’s black like his dog , but I don’t understand the lazy part. Pele (the soccer player) never was lazy.

@@mistersato411 We're doing an odyssey book think in 8th grade, and it asked for 3 examples for figurative language that we saw/read in the book, and I'm like hmm figurative language tf is that?
Great content, its helping me with my class. However, I have a question about your simile examples. You say the basketball player being as tall as a bookcase isn't a simile, because it could literally be true. but you said as quiet as the quartet waiting for the downbeat is a good simile. Being quiet isn't hard, so i find it very easy for something to literally be that quiet. How is the other example not a simile, but that one is?
I see your point. I guess what I think is good about the quartet example is not that they are equally quiet in terms of decibels, which as you correctly point out could be literally true, but that the simile conveys an intensity of focus and breath-holding anticipation. Thanks for pointing this out, Clinton!
Watched the whole thing didn't learn anything I didn't know. Passed the time at least I am in school from 6:00 am - 1:00 pm but if I procrastinate and don't do anything, my free time which is 1:00 pm - 10:30 pm will be my work time. That is 2 hours more work I have to do.
could u help me fix my poem with figuretive language please? Being nice to Lillian Jean, makes her think she's a queen carrying a white kids book waitin' for her to look taking her down to the woods where there are no neighborhoods I threw down her books lookin' at her looks she says "pick em up" And she didn't realize it was a trick well that's where it all started and where I outsmarted I pinned her down like she was an insect and demanded she apologizes and oh the surprises! Lillian Jean does, but she threatens to tell her dad all about what happend But in return, I will tell all of Lillian jeans friends about the gossip she has been generously sharing with me over the past few month. -Mariam
"...like an insect" is a simile! "Makes her think she's a queen," phrased this way, is not figurative language. You'd need to say "she is a queen" (metaphor) or "as" -- something -- "as a queen" (simile). Hope that helps.
