I do a combination of both but love the cubes for organization. One thing I do is pack 1/2 of my clothes in my suitcase and put the other half in my hubbies and then of course do the same for his. This way if one suitcase gets lost we aren't totally screwed. :-)
" pack 1/2 of my clothes in my suitcase and put the other half in my hubbies" I've watched countless packing videos and that's the best packing tip/ideal I've ever heard! Thanks for that tip!
@@heathahlee Yeah...I'm a plus size gal and losing any luggage would be hard for me. I can't just walk into a store and find what I can wear all the time. Have fun on your Alaska cruise. We went 4 years ago and loved it.
I like to pack a lot of dresses for a cruise. I find it saves space in the suitcase, and dresses are just easy to throw on the one garment and go. I find a simple T shirt dress is more comfortable than shorts and cooler than leggings for a day in port. A cute long maxi dress is a great cover up for a swim suit for sea days and can also be appropriate for lunch wherever on the ship. A basic black dress can be paired with sneakers and a denim jacket for a casual look or heels and jewelry for a more formal night.
I am definitely packing cubes for cruises. With limited storage space, you just unzip the cubes and place them on the shelf or in the drawer. Easy peasy!
Welllll, I am a consistent overpacker. However I am trying to get better at it and these type of videos are helpful! I love my softsided suitcase. I feel the hard sided cases get roughed up more. I religiously use packing cubes as much as possible. It is so easy to unpack when on the cruise ship. Just take them out and put them on the shelves or in the drawers. Easy Peasy! One color for my husband and one for me. I don't roll but use another method for folding, especially t shirts. A couple of suggestions. People should put the heavy items (like shoes) on the bottom by the wheels for stability. Pack your underwear in a packing cube or ziploc bag so you can take it out of your carryon easily.
Love the packing cubes. I always roll my clothes. My aunt taught me to roll my clothes for a trip when I was young. My aunt's husband was in the Air Force and they traveled a lot. She said that she had less problem with wrinkles and this was in the late '60s. She was way ahead of her time.
California Linda shares congratulations on your purchase of Level8 luggage. 👏👏 We have used ours on the last three cruises, a game changer over one with just two wheels. In the space between the trolley handles I place all my makeup, first aid items, medicine in different zippered bags based upon things I need in the morning, things I need at night, things I need if sick, etc. It saves luggage space. Placing your TSA items horizontally in the bag, instead of vertically takes less space. Amazing Fact. 🤔 Compression packing bags are amazing.
Had an Air Canada employee tell me that all AC crew use soft sided luggage with corner protectors as the hard shell eventually become compromised in the cargo hold ( extreme cold) and being thrown around. We now use TravelPro luggage which is a bit more affordable than the Level8. We’ve travelled in North American and Europe with our TravelPro and LOVE it!! We’ve had many different brands over many years but have never had a suitcase that really did THE job. Also use the TravelPro packing cubes. Not knocking Level8 as I’ve not had them but our TravelPro will be with us over many travels for many years. We’re doing a 20 day trip starting tomorrow with carry-on only. 19 inch each spinner and one under the seat each. That includes our elegant night clothes, tops/bottoms/swimwear/sundresses/hats and more clothes/two pair of shoes (plus ones we are wearing), toiletries, meds, cameras, snacks for the plane, jewelry, iPad,keyboard, e-reader, travel documents and much more. All the best everyone :-) 🛳️
Softside and compression cubes (airline employee carry-on only). We each pack 4 bottoms, 4 tops, 1 pair each of beach sandals, athletic shoes, dress shoes, (take out one of each to wear on the plane), 1 swimsuit, 1 cover-up, 1 LBD (just me), underwear, PJs, & socks, hat, toiletries, first aid/medicine kit, magnetic door decor (we're DCL), backpack and paperwork.
Packing cubes take up space… I need every inch. You definitely pack less than I would. Need room for chargers, swimsuit cover up, sunscreen, rash guard, snorkel gear.
For carry-on luggage, I am team packing cubes. Only hard shell. For my youngest child, I still like putting outfits in Ziplock gallon bags. We pull out a bag and there's no rummaging around the suitcase!
Love these packing videos! We only use carry on size when flying and cruising. We roll all clothes, saves a lot of space. Learned this from your previous packing videos. Thanks 👍.
I am on team hard side for carry on but team soft side for checked luggage. After having airlines damage my suitcases 1 too many times, I talked with some friends who work for WestJet. They stated while the hard side is nice they are 99% of the luggage that gets damaged as they crack and cannot be fixed. The soft-sided will bend a bit for give. They do offer harder-sided soft-sided luggage and that is the best of both worlds. I packed in a carry-on and backpack on the last cruise. (I snuck the sunscreen and aloe in my husband's checked suitcase). Either method works and I like the packing cube for even longer a trip as you can get compression cubes that compress your clothing allowing you to fit more again. But a simple trip the rolling is easier.
I haven’t been on a cruise in almost 10 years but after watching many cruise tips videos, I’m definitely going to use packing cubes. I think it will definitely help me stay as organized as possible and hopefully it will help with luggage space 😊
I prefer soft side suitcases because they are easier to get in and out of. Hard sides require 2x as much space when open and both sides need support when open.
I like the cube method and rolling we just started doing that before we used to just throw it in our suitcases and we don't have expensive suitcases but we got hard shell suitcases
I use cubes to help organize my packing and to contain all the small stuff. and still I can and do pack for a 7 day cruise in a 21” case I have soft and hard shell cases
We are going on our first ever cruise in June. I can tell I’m over packing LOL But I don’t care! I am so excited to “dress up” for dinner. I told my husband you packed two people in two carry on bags. He said she obviously isn’t packing for three outfit changes a day. 😂 All your tips are great. I definitely need to find a ponytail hat!
Love to see someone pack like I do. I'm getting ready to Cruise to Hawaii and plan on taking a backpack and a carry-on suitcase so I'm not dealing with too much.
I just bought my first set of packing cubes. When we fly next i will pack my daughter's stuff into our carry-on and stow mine. My carry-on will be snacks and entertainment.
Yay! So happy to see a new video. I still reference your old ones. I use a combo of rolling and packing cubes. I used a hardside carry-on for the first for our cruise 3 weeks ago. I found I was able to fit more in. I really didn't think that would be the case. OK enjoy y'all and back to the video
I tend to wear dressier clothing at night so will add a black sheath dress and a pair of dress pants with several dressier blouses and accompanying undergarments plus a sparkly evening bag. After the past 3 years, it will be nice to get dressed up again. I use compression cubes and/or giant ziplock baggies to fold or roll into to allow for cross-packing as Melody suggested below in case one suitcase gets lost then the owner has at least 2 outfits to wear. I ensure that each of these cubes/ziplock contains 2 complete outfits including undies, shorts, bathing suit and dressy top. (Again, as Melody mentioned, we plus-sized ladies can't just find appropriate clothing anywhere so it pays to be prudent in that regard as I learned on my first cruise when husband's and daughter's cases showed up and mine didn't materialize until day 2 and had obviously been in the rain.) I don't use a toiletries bag or jewelry holder anymore and just use the ziplocks or small pouches to use every square inch of free space and never pack shoes together as I can more easily find free space for one shoe at a time. I prefer to bring 1 pair of dressier wedge sandals for the long walk to the dining room, one pair of walking/water sandals and I wear my sneakers. My good jewelry and other valuables stay in my knapsack until they can go into the safe. Nobody has mentioned a rain jacket yet!
I have noticed that the American Airlines are not as strict as the Canadian airlines with our carry on luggage sizes! I love packing cubes & rolling! Love you & Jason…you are so natural & down to earth! Videos are awesome!
Black jeans with several tops, one pair of Skechers, one pair of "fancy" shoes, long skirt/dressy top. As for gaining weight, I'm one of those people who generally lose about 5-10 pounds/cruise - not an overeater on a cruise.
I am partial y disabled and prefer folding my clothes yet I can still acknowledge for a 7 day cruise in a 21” suitcase my husband is a bit harder because he is a BIG BOY BUT I can still get it all into a 21”. he wears his tennies and sportcoat for boarding and sometimes his jeans but it all fits. Because he has a medical disability I generally pack his medical gear in its own backpack we have done this for years and know exactly what he needs
I use some cubes and pouches. I like keeping my clothes on their hangers and just lay them all on one side. We don’t do carry on. I now use the Away hard case with various personal item bags. ❤️ God bless.
There seemed to be wasted space with the packing cube method. I think I'll go without them. Thanks for showing me the options though. I enjoyed learning!🤗
I like the packing cruise - it makes the suitcase look neater and organized. I also take the packing cube out and open it- and lay it in the drawer and put the clothes on the packing cube- I don't wanna put the clothes in the drawer without something under the clothes.
Rolled in a regular packing cube, BUT you also can use a lot of compression even without compression cubes. I'm trying a mix of hard and soft for our upcoming cruise. I've always done soft and mostly duffel bags, but have rarely flown (it's been over a decade since I've been on a plane!) and never cruised.
I'm a packing cubes fiend! I'm also an overpacker because I don't know how I'm going to feel (this happens in every day life). We normally drive to our cruises and hard side luggage makes it easier to load into the van.
Alisa what material is your sweater made of ? I have been searching for one similar, but not having a lot of luck, most tend to wrinkle, or what brand is it ?
I really enjoyed the video. I have a 20” hard shell carry on that I use now because airlines always look at my 22” soft cover bag funny. Never tried cubes but now I’m willing to try.
I roll and use packing cubes on mine. My daughter prefers hers folded. I will say we put shoes and a hair straightener in the handle space, we normally drive and don’t fly sometimes we go by train and it’s much less strict with rain travel. Just takes longer lol
After seeing both you and ParoDeeJay with a Tripped backpack, I bought one. LOVE it! Thank you. As for packing, I will never be as organized as you. I try. Medium checked bag is as little as I can get to, but it's better than the big one. If we are taking snorkel gear and stuff, it's so hard to go small. I started packing in cubes and I like it, but I don't roll. I like that I can just throw the whole cube in a drawer or on a closet shelf without unpacking it. I also feel it's easier if you are staying in a hotel a night or 2 pre-cruise. No digging to find what you need. You can pack a cube for a couple days and keep the rest in the suitcase. Our next cruise is b2b for 14 days. I'm going to try to pack for one week and do laundry on turn around day and wear the same things again the next week. That's the plan. Wish me luck! ;)
I’m a packing cube girl IF I’m going to be packing and going every couple days…IF I’m staying in one place for the week, then it doesn’t seem to matter as much….but packing and moving EVERY day…packing cubes are HUGE!
I’m all for packing cubes and the rolling method. I feel you can fit more overall. I’ve always preferred soft sided luggage but recently bought a hard shell case to use on my next cruise so we’ll see how I like it!
Wow you are great at packing. We usually fold and have hard body luggage. You gave me great ideals and I never seen packing cubes before. My wife would love those. Thanks
I use packing cubes mostly. I find that the shoes (mens) cause the most challenge and takes up the most space. Because of all the medications we take and I like to be ready for any purchases I have done in port, I like to take a large suitcase for all the extras :). Thanks for sharing!
My X wife (yes, even though we've been divorced for about 10 years, we still cruise together!) is a souvenir buying fanatic! She HAS to bring the large suitcase! LOL We just got off a cruise in March and she could barely close her case! LOL
I've used both methods. Packing cubes and sometimes without, just roll. This was a great video for us because we need new suitcases soon. Our wheels don't cooperate any more. We're cruising in a few weeks and will try this method for a carryon. Thanks so much!
Great update to your old video on packing. But what about all the little handy hacks for cruising - the magnet hooks, the fan, nite light, etc. ? There are so many extra things that seem to take up space. Thanks for all your fun videos… as well as the informative ones.
I like packing cubes to organize things and ever since watching my soft sided luggage get drenched in DFW from the plane I use hard sided. When driving I still enjoy the soft side.
I use compression packing cubes and the roll method, we take one large suitcase and both our clothes, shoes, etc go in there. We each take a backpack for medication and husband's cpap machine. We usually drive to port, last time we flew we did carry on's.
Hard sided luggage definitely. I think it protects your stuff better. I use packing cubes but I fold my clothes. I've tried folding & rolling. Rolling takes up more space imo.
Also...going on an Alaska Land Cruise 12 days total. I can't pack a casual outfit for each day so hoping not hard to find a place to do laundry half way through. I plan on bringing few tide pods and finding a place to wash half way through. I'm a first timer!
I use packing cubes and love how the whole cube can be set on a shelf or placed in a drawer. My jury is still out on soft vs hard luggage. I use soft luggage but sometimes they want to tip over. Am thinking hard sided may be less prone to tipping.
Hubby and I went on a river cruise on the Seine for 7 days and stayed in Paris extra days for a total of 12 days with only a carryon and a backpack each. Packed a foldable duffel in his carryon and a foldable tote in mine for souvenirs. Loved it. Checked those carryon on the way home. We overpacked on our last cruise on the Mediterranean on Holland America and only wore half of our clothes. Hence, I challenged hubby and I to only do carryon and we didn’t have to worry about lost luggage.
I have developed almost an addiction to packing cubes! Before purchasing our luggage, we really debated what would work best for us. We settled on hard side luggage. They are much more durable in my opinion.
Very helpful! Cruising in 7 weeks (with flying to port), and I'm a simple gal. Some of the other packing videos I've seen are way out of touch with my reality. I don't need tons of resort wear "outfits" because that would feel costume-y for me. I like your tips, and I feel better that I don't need to worry about being underdressed. I am down for a dress up night and looking for something that packs well. Thanks!
Watch out for the TSA locks on the Level 8 carryon. I bought this suitcase and luckily tried opening it a couple days before we left for a month long trip to Hawaii. The lock didn’t open no matter what we tried. We finally had to get a TSA key to open the suitcase. Then we couldn’t get the key out! We ended up throwing out the suitcase.
I use packing cubes and compression cubes because of the organization and clothes won't move inside the suitcase. I use hard case luggage and for our next cruise we are adding travel backpacks as our personal item bag.
We use packing cubes and folding. We did have soft sided luggage, but we had worn the wheels down on 1 and the other two were just getting unwieldy and too heavy (these 3 pieces of luggage are all about 20-15 years old). We just purchased Level 8 hard sided luggage, but haven’t used them yet. We are between the years of 65 & 75, so maneuverability and weight are very important to us. We’ll be trying out the new luggage in about 4 weeks when we start to travel again this year.
I think that packing video is what got me to watching your channel!! I got a set of the hard luggage but it’s not as nice as yours!! I have never used the packing cubes I just roll the clothes!!
I love the packing cubes. I actually got the idea from you. I also use the hard shell suitcases. I have used the soft suitcases but I prefer the hard shell. I also roll my clothes. Love watching your videos for all your ideas and tips. Thanks as always for all you do for us.
I do a combination of both but love the cubes for organization. One thing I do is pack 1/2 of my clothes in my suitcase and put the other half in my hubbies and then of course do the same for his. This way if one suitcase gets lost we aren't totally screwed. :-)

Team hard shell. Always. Never used packing cubes, dont really see a need for them. I do roll my clothes.
I uses packing cubes, we use hard suitcases now used to use soft ones. I also pack waterproof boots when traveling to Alaska
packing cubes! i love them because i can unpack so easily-just put the cubes in the closet. hard sides suitcases.
I use some cubes and pouches. I like keeping my clothes on their hangers and just lay them all on one side. We don’t do carry on. I now use the Away hard case with various personal item bags. ❤️ God bless.
We use hardshell luggage. Believe this or not, Scott is a way better packer, and he rolls most of our clothes.
I use packing tubes along with hardback luggage. I truly enjoy the cubes for going and returning. They work great.
Great ideas! I usually repeat shorts but I always have to bring swim cover-ups and pajamas.
Hard shell
Packing cubes
And recently I’ve started using the vacuum sealed bags 👍🏽
Packing cubes and hard suitcases. Pull the cubes out and roll the lid under the cube and place where you want.
That’s what I do!
Rolling with cubes 🎉
Alisa what did you pack for British isles cruise? I'm going in September.
There seemed to be wasted space with the packing cube method. I think I'll go without them. Thanks for showing me the options though. I enjoyed learning!🤗

LOL
Just my opinion, but I LOVE your hair short. I think it was an unexpected blessing during a hard trial. 🥰
I've used both methods. Packing cubes and sometimes without, just roll. This was a great video for us because we need new suitcases soon. Our wheels don't cooperate any more. We're cruising in a few weeks and will try this method for a carryon. Thanks so much!
Rolling with packing cubs are great what I always do plus roll up my clothes to pack regularly
Hard shell luggage and a mix of roll and fold, compression bags
Definitely packing cubes. I seem to be more comfortable with hard side.
Great update to your old video on packing. But what about all the little handy hacks for cruising - the magnet hooks, the fan, nite light, etc. ? There are so many extra things that seem to take up space.
Thanks for all your fun videos… as well as the informative ones.
Packing now for an April 22 cruise. I'm going to try the 'rolling' method. Thanks for the video.
I like packing cubes to organize things and ever since watching my soft sided luggage get drenched in DFW from the plane I use hard sided. When driving I still enjoy the soft side.
I like that fold of course but have rolled in a soft suit case but now getting hard shell and cubes for my first Cruise this year thanks for sharing ❤
I use compression packing cubes and the roll method, we take one large suitcase and both our clothes, shoes, etc go in there. We each take a backpack for medication and husband's cpap machine. We usually drive to port, last time we flew we did carry on's.
Last time we had a regular soft luggage. I rolled everything. This time I have some packing cubes and hard shell luggage.
Yes, you have it figured out!
I have developed almost an addiction to packing cubes! Before purchasing our luggage, we really debated what would work best for us. We settled on hard side luggage. They are much more durable in my opinion.
They really are! I couldn’t ever use soft luggage again.
Going to try packing cubes for my next cruise. Have never used them before.
I use packing cubes. It utilizes the space more efficiently. I also use hard shell suitcases
Thanks!
Packing cubes look awesome.. I’m ordering some Level 8 cases after seeing this great video.. Thank You .. Best wishes..
Great Vlog as always! Tons of useful info! Will try some of these tips next trip!
Hard shell and packing cubes. Thanks for the video showing both methods🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼
We ended up throwing out the suitcase.
thank you for your video . i’m frist time go to the cruise help me a lot. thank you so much
Have been using and loving packing cubes for a couple years now
I use packing cubes and compression cubes because of the organization and clothes won't move inside the suitcase.
Yes we use soft luggage we and love the packing cubes.
Love packing cubes and have done both soft and hard cases.
Thank you, now to get my wife to watch and follow your directions. LOL
