A part of me hoped Lee to have passed away shortly after the battle because of how weak he is later on, maybe something similar to Jet from avatar where they make it unclear before he's taken to the hospital but confirming it later so at least he would be remembered by his peak and what he fought for rather than being the "What If Naruto" had he not been handicapped.

He could have grabbed Lee with his sand the moment Lees kicks made contact with his shield. Sand coffin and the match would have been over quickly and Lee would have died. Lee wouldn’t have expected that bc he had no prior knowledge of Gaaras abilities. Lee, had enough time to build up his abilities and adapt to his opponent. Gaara could have attacked him or prevented him from powering up by utilizing the attacks that are overwhelming and require Lee to dodge. The gates seem to require a second to charge up and open. Actually, in the early series of Naruto, Lee is probably the strongest of them all. They had to make him severly injured otherwise, not even Sasuke nor Neji would be a match to him. He can easily beat all tsunin level without even using the inner gates.
