Turns, curves, & corners are always something to look out for on the road - no matter how experienced a driver you are. Personally, I find the worst are on the lower mountain roads in Maine, where there's no light except for your headlights. The first couple weeks I'm there, I find I have to drive 45 on roads posted 65. But once I know where I am, I tend to power through curves. I think this is because we always had motorcycles in the family, rather than cars. Motorcycles have to slow down earlier, & strongly accelerate through turns. It's just physics. So once I'm familiar with the terrain, I do tend to drive like I'm in a motorcycle, & accelerate strongly through the turns.
PS: New drivers! Do NOT let the locals make you speed up more than you are comfortable with! That's the making of an accident. If it's bothering you that they're tailgating, find a place to pull over and let them all pass. If you can't, just stick to your guns and drive at a speed you feel comfortable with. That they have to drive a little slower, is not nearly the catastrophe that you driving off the road and into a tree would be. They will have to learn a little patience. Your job is to drive safely - no matter your speed.

Yes, they didn't have much budget left for the rest of the videos, but he did a great job and kept my attention throughout. I was driving curvy blind corners on a gravel road trying the race driving technique. First time driving SUV with rollover warning on visor. Concerned with driving heavy high vehicle with too narrow wheel base.
Narrow road makes extra room for turning difficult. Crossed lines, and cop behind me thought I was having a medical condition. I explained I was trying to straighten out the curve...as he told me he was trained for in high speed chases. They don't bother with many warning signs or indicate when speed can return to normal. ( In very remote area)
Also confused when to use straightening the curve vs driving on longest line to lessen sharpness of curve. Have experienced under steering on turn. Terrifying feeling of losing control. No sign warning for reduced speed on very sharp curve

I signed up for the program after watching some of your videos. I had my first btw today and I did well. However the curvy roads made me a bit nervous. The instructor was very calm so i wasn't to nervous. My son has a license but doesn't drive much. I suggested he watches ad well. He is working hard to buy a car thas summer. I noticed most drivers were patient. But someone did CVome from behind and get in front of me and it really freaked me out. I was doing the speed limit in a residential area. I think for the first 4 lessons I'll stick with 11am practice as everyone is already at work. Thanks for the tutorials.

Thanks for the vid! Now I know what I'm doing wrong. I'm just a new driver, sometimes when I'm on a curve, i feel that the centrifugal force is quite strong so I always hit the brake to slow down during the curve, that causes my steering to be quite harder and also it makes me uncomfortable. I do that because I don't want to delay those vehicles behind me so I'm always approaching the curve quite fast then slow down during the curve.
I feel that my vehicle will shoot towards the sidewalk whenever i do that.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Noel Pena - Thank you for your comment and valuable information. For most, that is the natural tendency; however, you want to overcome that tendency. You want to slow down before the curve by taking your foot off the throttle and then in the curve keep power to the wheels. You'll have more control and be able to steer through the corner. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hey man thank you so much for this video.. i am based in Scotland so driving on the left side but still really useful. I have recently started driving and I would often find myself getting detours to avoid winding narrow roads which are quite common outside urban areas (they call them country roads and have max speed of 60miles but some are death traps!!!), Will put in practice your tricks, thanks for this 😊

I used to be an excellent highway driver, when I was younger. I have no fear of curves when I'm on a highway close to home. The further I go out, that's when it starts. When I'm going into a curve, I get this fear of the steering wheel locking into place, and the car is going to continue straight into the curve or wall barrier, without me being able to turn the wheel. Don't know why this is happening to me. I've been driving for years and have only been in one minor accident. I also have a fear of driving over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, as well as the George Washington bridge(only during storms though).

If people get the concept of focusing as far ahead as they can see as the curve rolls into their vision, they find out driving becomes more easy, correct, natural and fun. It is amazing what the human mind can do, as your focus of vision advances into the distance as new road comes into view your mind already registered and determined how the more closer road in the periphery of your vision should be driven. It is almost like you, nature and the car became one. If you trust it your mind will get you there but you have to tell it where to go in advance by looking way ahead.

Great advice! I have to drive my boyfriend to work now until he gets his license back and let me tell you i experience the worst anxiety trying to drive through the curves and turns on the interstate and on routes. I have major trouble maintaining high speed going around the curves especially the sharp ones. I piss a lot of other drivers off and i make my boyfriend nervous someone will run into the back of us because I go so slow. Its so bad to the point where whenever i know i have to take him to work, i get instant anxiety about it and its sad i know, but true 😢. Hopefully tomorrow when i take him i will remember these tactics and put them to use effectively!

Thank you for these insights, after 30 years of driving I'm learning loads. However, your description of that road as narrow made me smile. Here in England it's quite wide and the real challenges involved twisting roads only 1 car wide with passing places. I've just had to clean about half a ton of mud off my Mini after having to reverse uphill on a single curving country lane with stone walls on each side, to allow a truck delivering a tractor to pass! Still, it was an absolutely beautiful drive.

    • @smartdrivetest

Hi Freya Wyrd - Thank you for your comment. And you are absolutely correct - in relation to UK roads, that road is a "BIG" road indeed. When I started driving bus in Australia, it took me about a month to make the transition because the lanes are 6-12" narrower than in North America. Few drivers in North America know about backing up so another vehicle can get by because there is simply no room to pass or turn around. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. I think even with these techniques, it still shouldn't be that fast, but this video makes more me comfortable with the idea of going faster on it. Thanks Rick.
So giving you car a bit of throttle around turns actually gives you more control, over coasting a corner or braking? Is it still a problem at lower speeds? Like does it cause unnecessary wear on the vehicle?

Hello sir,, in slowing down in curves inorder for me to control well the steering wheel ,, is it enough just to stop pressing the gas pedal before the curve or I have to press the brake pedal before the curve?
    Or it depends?
    Thank you and godbless!

i aint him, im actually a new driver, but ik it depends. if its a tight turn and your going like 40-45 (think in a city and your taking a 90 degree right turn) you will need to hit the brakes unless you release the gas WAY too early. if your going 25 and its a longer right 90 degree turn all you would need to do is release gas, but all this depends on how fast you can take the corner. look for suggested speed signs. if there is none, go the speed limit. if there is one, determine if you can slow down to it before the turn without using brake. if you cant, give it enough brake to slow down. my instructor was real thorough with this stuff. hope it helped :D
