Man, finding this video was a Godsend after watching multiple others. I just got my first 1911 - a simple inexpensive Tisas 1911A1 US Army model, nothing fancy. I shot yesterday and needed to clean it. Takedown was fairly simple and straightforward as was reassembly… but for the life of me, I could not get the slide release back into the gun! The tip where you slide the piece up to the detent and depress it a little bit really made sense and helped me successfully avoid the “idiot mark” on my week old 1911 😅 not worried about the snobs but just didn’t wanna scratch my gun. It seems like the other videos skipped over or just bypassed this simple little tip. I was trying to force it and not scratch my new gun at the same time lol.
This was the BEST video on how to Reassemble my 1911. I’m new to this gun and all of the other videos NEVER showed the detail you have shown on that “Notch” for putting the Slide Detent pin back in...Thank You!
Thanks Mike for that in depth guide to the unique process of breaking down the original 1911. Makes me appreciate my High Power and the changes Browning did to make this job so much more easy. It almost mirrors most modern polymer pistol designs which I'm sure were copied by every manufacturer.
Im a new gun owner and I have watched at least 5 how to vidoes. This is by far the most infrmative so I will be recommending to other newbies. Thanks for clearing the air.
Bravo! Over the years fellow LEO's would buy a 1911, because they are classy and cool. They go shoot them but have no idea how to break them down for cleaning. No TH-cam back then. I have taught so many folks to do just what you did. Now it is for ALL to see, review, stop and start. Thank you very much.
I just received my grandfather’s Remington-Rand 1911 and this video really helped me break it down and clean it since I’ve never cleaned any pistol other than my Glock 17! This was a big help, I appreciate it!
Long time handgun owner, 1st time 1911 owner, thanks for the video. It's a little different than living and cleaning a modern polymer handgun. Love the channel.
Having just acquired a new Springfield 1911 with the tight tolerances of an un-broken-in pistol, I had GREAT trouble with the spring-loaded retainer pin for the slide lock pin. I've watched a dozen videos on cleaning, and this was the only video that mentioned using a tool to depress the retainer pin. I now have scratches on my new 1911 and was greatly frustrated at not being able to push in the slide lock pin. Regardless of you calling everything a bushing, I applaud you mentioning the spring retainer in re-assembly. No one else on u-tube has even mentioned it that I've seen. They all are re-assembling well-broken pistols and their pins just drop in place. On a new pistol, that part can be a bugger. Good thing I don't really care about anything other than how my gun shoots.
I learned this from a Sig employee. “Is you see metal that shines, you have metal on metal contact. Those are the surfaces that need lubricating.” I was really over lubricating prior to that. Thanks for a really good video.
I just put my first 1911 on layaway yesterday. I wanted to check it out to compare it with taking care of my FNS-9. Not terribly different. Thanks for always putting out great content, man.
i just bought a norinco 1911 a few weeks ago, and after i had a couple issues at the range, my friend suggested i clean it, so i decided to try and strip it down today. it took me an entire hour trying to take the damn thing apart lmao. this will help a lot once i actually get a cleaning kit and CLP in. good shit!

It's good to see that I've been cleaning my gun the proper way...Have shot 600+ rounds through my new Kimber Custom II and I'm still getting feed jams!! Very frustrating, although the gun shoots like a dream and is very accurate. Just wish it was more reliable. I have been cleaning and lubing it after every outing and I still get feed jams. All in all, an excellent and thorough video that demonstrates exactly what needs to be done to keep your 1911's running smoothly. I do have one suggestion that comes from a close friend about my age who has been 'smithing his 1911's for more than 40 years. Wear lightweight gloves to keep the chemicals off of your hands. My friend has had some real issues with using solvents and cleaning products. They are volatile regardless of what the manufacturer states and over time they can be poisoning you. Sadly, you don't become aware of it until the damage is done.
Hey, thanks for this informative video! Whenever I get a new 1911, I watch all your 1911 videos again due to the great insight and your subtle humor. On another note, I’ve got to tell you your reviews are spot on and super helpful, I actually had to pick up the Glock G40 after watching your video on that10mm. “Home Boy”. lol. That was a good one. Thanks again and keep it up.
Thanks man...... Just got a Kimber 1911 Custom for Christmas. Tried to clean it before shooting. It was a chore.... this video really helped. God bless and Merry Christmas Ken
while I am not to firearms and I have shot 1911's before but, not until today am I a 1911 owner :D as luck would have it I walked into my local shop and on the self there was a Colt Combat Commander in stainless with colts upgraded beavertail grip safety, so I had to have her !! thanks for the input in this video very helpful.
PastryMan I like most of the two tone designs I’ve seen quite a bit, and I haven’t owned one personally but Springfield’s 1911s seem to be generally well liked. I’m not always a big fan of skeletonized triggers, but it looks good on this pistol. You get an extra round from the standard mag and a match grade barrel too. I hope that she does well for you! I don’t know what your experience is with 1911s but if there is anything you don’t like about them they can be changed. Every one I have owned started out being perfect just the way it is, and now they are all more perfect. 😂
purchasing a vintage Colt issued during world war one and this video will be a good reference for the routine maintenance of that historic collectors piece. i got a good deal on it will do a video when i pick it up soon.
Fantastic video! Been shooting the 0.45 ACP for 50 years. would recommend that pistol should be clean exactly this way every time we use it. small point would recommend wearing rubber gloves to prevent skin acid from getting onto the metal and etching it especially if we only use the weapon once or twice a year.
HOW DO YOU HAVE ANY DISLIKES????????? IF THIS WERE ANY SIMPLER YOU'D HAVE TO BE IN SOMEBODY'S LIVING ROOM!!! Thank God I found this video! No comparison out there
Plunger, guide rod, slide stop and barrel bushing all = bushing. Hahaha, I kidding with you. I've done the same thing. It's amazing how speech, parts, equipment and trick that you do for years that work great all go right out the window when you turn on a camera. Great video, you really did a good job.
Two simple bro thank you, I've been in the military 23 years and believe me when I tell you this I have seen soldiers who do not know how to properly cleaning an M4. I learned how to clean weapons ( M16A1) in May of 1985 and I've never forgotten it doesn't even take long to clean an M4 at least 15 minutes you should be done. Like you said you will never get all the carbon off the weapon, a general cleaning or general maintenance it's all they need.
Just got an ATI 1911 commander model and glad I found your video, even it it's too late for my "rookie" error. My question is "Should you polish the feeder ramp initially"? I haven't fired the gun yet, but did go through the cleaning as shown.
I have Pipe Cleaners but I also use some “Chop Sticks” from our Chinese food place..it doesn’t harm the gun and can be sharpened to a fine point if necessary. I’ll look on line for the Tipton Polymer Pik in the mean time...Thanks for your easy to follow instructions!
Awesome channel! Very informative...! Very practical...! Thank you! (particularly for me that I just got into firearms last May 2016 - learned a LOT from your videos)

I know people say not to put much in the firing pin area but since it is all open now it's hard to resist not doing a complete clean out in that area. Comments?? Greg saiter....
hey dude, thank you so much!!! i just went back and reviewed this video because I have a number of different 1911's with different length guide rods and I'm terrified of marring up the slide with the infamous idiot scratch! as always thanks bro! Doc David
Great video. Just bought a 1911 over Christmas wish I woulda seen this before I started cleaning the first time, almost lost parts, it was bad. Lol.. Almost forgot do u ever use a dry lube on/for anything dealing with firearms? Again thanks for what u do and being a great teacher.
Thanks for this video. I know it is really old as well. I'm a new 1911 owner and I would like a few clarifications and/or questions in general. 1. What is your general thought of using Q-tips for cleaning instead of those small clothing fragments? 2. How do you clean those clothing fragments after you are doing using them? 3. Do you have to (I'm meaning for the longevity of my gun) add that extra layer of CPL on the gun? I was told that you didn't have to and that it already did that. 4. I have the CLP that is a spray. Which do you prefer when cleaning your gun?
Very good cleaning instruction for 1911's! I love my Springfield lightweight compact. In fact I'm going to give her a good cleaning now even though I haven't shot her in a few months..lol :) Everything is a link or bushing when watching basketball..lol
That’s one of the best field strip and lube a 1911 I have seen. You should stress to put a drop of oil on the disconnector. Also, very important, learn the correct nomenclature for all parts.
What happens if the Lubricant gets into the Firing Pin area? I cleaned my 1911 and didn’t know anything about this..and I’m not sure if any lube got in there. I use Strike Hold, sprayed on a cleaning pad for most of the cleaning.
What amazes me is how almost every video about cleaning a 1911 is basically the same, but lubricating a 1911 is always different. Some end up using about half a quart of oil, while others use maybe 4 tiny, strategic drops. All of them talk like they know everything about 1911s there is to know and shoot trillions of rounds a year out of them, yet the variance in maintenance is so extreme.. smh On the cleaning side I’d say that if you have a 1911 with tighter tolerances in addition to nylon picks get a slide crevice tool just for removing the fouling from those grooves. It is probably still a good idea to have one even if the tolerances are loose because using brushes and picks are not nearly as effective as the tool is from my experience. I find crap galore with that thing every time I use it no matter how thorough I think I am.
Quick question when cleaning my old gov 1911 the barrel link pin falls out and the link comes away from the barrel. It still fires and is my best firearm for accuracy that I own for now. Is this just lose tolerances or should I have it looked at? Btw fantastic video!
As a know-nothing watching your channel, I can see why people get Glocks after watching this. Very very cool gun- but seems like a gun for people inclined to tinker.
David Hynes glock=Toyota camry, 1911= Cadillac. the Cadillac is not for everyone but if you keep oil in the caddy it will last just as long with more power and comfort
Excellent video, as always. I'm flying with the idea of using graphite (like used for locks) in the rails, either in addition to or instead of oil, to lubricate the rails? Any thoughts?
Watching your video makes me think. I think going forward I am going to invest in a box of Latex gloves for cleaning. The solvents, oils, etc... can't be good for you getting on your skin where it could get in your system. Many places sell them cheap these days!
What sights are on that pistol specifically the rear? Who manufactured that pistol. That pistol makes me want to get one nuthin fancy just simple and to the point just the right accents too.
I just bought a Armscor 1911A2 .22 TCM/9mm Combo. I currently have the 9mm barrel, and spring in. Constantly having feed issues. Double feed, slide not locking all the way forward/round jamming halfway into the barrel. What could be causing this? I took the weapon apart, and cleaned it per this video to ensure I was doing it correctly. I end up getting more feed problems afterwards. Any ideas?
Plus one to your video...retired Vietnam Vet....spent many days and hours disassembling and cleaning weapons....both in the field and in the classroom....was a small arms marksmanship instructor and competition 45 auto shooter....this video was a good straight to the point no bullshit video on cleaning and lubricant...highly recommend this video to anybody looking to take apart and clean their 1911 pistol.....set your table up next to your screen and pause the video as you take apart your gun step by step with this video....kudos to you....brought back many memories....

Greg Johnson Thanks.
Mrgunsngear Channel do you have a 1911 that you would call " the most reliable " considering it for military duty use?
Randall Cole no such thing as the MOST reliable. Just about any 1911 will run fine if you maintain it and work all the kinks out just like with any other gun. But if I had to put money on it, it would be a hand fit custom. Something from Wilson or Ed Brown.
I just purchased a Rock Island Armory 1911 (First gun!) and this video helped immensely!! Thank you!!!
Thanks for the video. This was a great how to for new 1911 owners, and a great refresher/confirmation too for some of us that are a little rusty.
Please keep doing what you do. Both instructional and commentary. I really appreciate your approach on both fronts. I just picked up my first 1911, so even though an older tutorial, very helpful. I have subscribed for a long time and look forward to seeing the latest.

Disassembling, cleaning/lubricating, reassembling a 1911 pistol is very therapeutic and enjoyable to me!

Excellent, very clearly explained and illustrated video; very useful! Thanks!
Thanks for the refresher! I'm getting back into owning and shooting 1911s again and I needed a little reminder LOL

Once again excellent demonstration. Thanks
Thank you.
This will be my go to 1911 vid if/when I ever get one
Thanks. Once you get one you'll be addicted….
Have not seen that pic before. Makes too much sense. Going to order one now. Thank you.
thanks!
Just found the video.Very,very good.Thanks.
Chris.
Chris Sherrill Great. Thanks
Great video - very complete and detailed!
Thank you.
thanks so much, I've learned a lot from your channel and my 1911 thanks you too
awesome
Very good cleaning instruction for 1911's! I love my Springfield lightweight compact. In fact I'm going to give her a good cleaning now even though I haven't shot her in a few months..lol :) Everything is a link or bushing when watching basketball..lol
Exactly!
love the video my new 1911 has a full length guide rod, is there much difference in the breakdown
That’s one of the best field strip and lube a 1911 I have seen. You should stress to put a drop of oil on the disconnector. Also, very important, learn the correct nomenclature for all parts.
I'd recommend cleaning out the firing pin and extractor channels, you've already got it broken down might as well be thorough.
Thanks. I just gat my first 1911 on sept 2020!
This video helped alot :) thank you for making it
Thank you for the video becuase i had so much issues with the slide release on reassembly 😅
What happens if the Lubricant gets into the Firing Pin area? I cleaned my 1911 and didn’t know anything about this..and I’m not sure if any lube got in there. I use Strike Hold, sprayed on a cleaning pad for most of the cleaning.
Good review...love this platform of weapons
Thank you.
Excellent video for new comers
Thank you.
Thanks.... Really helpful and simple
What amazes me is how almost every video about cleaning a 1911 is basically the same, but lubricating a 1911 is always different. Some end up using about half a quart of oil, while others use maybe 4 tiny, strategic drops. All of them talk like they know everything about 1911s there is to know and shoot trillions of rounds a year out of them, yet the variance in maintenance is so extreme.. smh
On the cleaning side I’d say that if you have a 1911 with tighter tolerances in addition to nylon picks get a slide crevice tool just for removing the fouling from those grooves.
Any thoughts?
thanks. I see no need to but if it works for you have at it.
Watching your video makes me think. I think going forward I am going to invest in a box of Latex gloves for cleaning. The solvents, oils, etc... can't be good for you getting on your skin where it could get in your system. Many places sell them cheap these days!
You could use fireclean/froglube/rand CLP as well. That's why a lot of folks switch.
What sights are on that pistol specifically the rear? Who manufactured that pistol. That pistol makes me want to get one nuthin fancy just simple and to the point just the right accents too.
Springfield Armory RO with a Fusion F/O front sight.
Any ideas?
deigon708 I'd call Rock Island.
