The two Tamrons are awesome! And definitely not only for "enthusiasts and advanced hobbyists" - they can easily be used for commercial work as well - that all depends on the person operating the camera!
I have the Tamron 17-28, 28-75, and the Sony 85 1.8 all for a nearly the same price as just the 16-35mm GM. If you're on a budget, all 3 of these lenses also use 67mm filters threads so it keeps your kit compact. I'd say win-win imo
Only thing I noticed from my testing is the 17-28mm does flair pretty heavy in direct sunlight (with the lens hood on). It ended up being artistic for the shots, but it could get annoying. Not sure if the 16-35mm is any better though
Tamron is great value for this money. I have my Sony 16-35 F 2.8 GM for almost 2 years (100% photography, no video, shot about 20.000 photos with it), it´s my main lense for landscape, architecture and astrophotography; at 35 mm also for street and wide angle portraits. I use the 35 mm a lot , I would miss it (if weight matters, I don´t need an extra 35 mm lens), the corner sharpness (I own a A7R III) is very important for me (large printings). Sunstars and flare resistence are also important topics. The AF/MF switch is very helpful also the programmable button. But on the other side, for this price you can´t do nothing wrong with the Tammy...
I would gladly take the Tamron if I didnt already start adding GM lens to my gear setup. (24-70mm & 70-200mm). Though one cant ignore the fact that having BOTH Tamron 17-28 & 28-75mm would still cost less than just 1 GM lens.
I just jumped into Sony (thanks in no small part to your videos) and have been shooting with the kit lens. Trying to decide where to go from here, but the Tamrons are looking like a good option.
Great comparison Jason! Could you add "focus breathing test" to your list, at short and long focal length next time, please? Thank you for your work 👍 📷
How in the hell didn't you find focus breathing? I have been using mine for 3 weeks, and shooting video, more noticeable so with very up close objects, it breads back and forth to acquire focus, almost like it's using contrast detection AF instead of the native on Sony a7m3, a6500 and a6400
My oh my! I went to Kyoto in April, and I thought given the tight spaces at the shrines, esp the very famous Fushimi Inari-taisha, bringing the 1635GM would only give me more flexibility versus the 2470GM...man was I wrong! The photos it took are just breath taking! And because it's shorter and lighter than the latter, in the end it became the only lens I used for the rest of my trip!
I went into the store to pick up the Tamron 17-28 and the sales person kept pushing the GM lens on my. I ended up leaving without buying anything. I currently have the Tamron 28-200 on my Sony a7iv. Do you think the 17-28 would pair well with the lens I currently have, or would I be better suited getting something different? I travel on my motorcycle so size and weight are considerations, but not something I couldn't overlook. If I had the space, I'd just get 20, 35, 50, and 85 primes and call it a day haha.
Hi Jason! Of course primes are way sharper... But how are you feeling about the tamron 17 28 and 28 75 compared to the batis line? I'm always switching between 18mm and 85mm but during weddings it's too tricky.. so I'm looking if the tamrons would be a great replacement or if I'll regret doing my batis lenses away. Thanks man, keep it up! 🙏🏼
I rented one last year and compared with 17-28 and 24GM on a7R2 & a73. Comparable with the Tamron in sharpness and most other aspects. Bokeh tho isn't smooth, and I would rate the Sigma 5/10 with significant outlining, the Tamron 6/10 with onion rings, and the GM 9/10. Autofocus is also a tad slower than the Tamron.
Bell Le that’s good to know. However, no one really get a wide angle lens for bokeh do they? The other thing is, if you’re using the tamron for architecture and real estate is it really wide enough? That’s where I think the sigma might have the advantage
@@matthoffman6962 17mm is definitely not wide enough for real estate. I would say go for the 14-24 or the Sony 12-24/4 if that's what you need. Otherwise, the Tamron do have front filters tho. I didn't have a chance to try out the Sigma rear filter during the rental (seems less convenient). Regarding bokeh - I regularly use the GM or the Tamron @ 28mm/2.8 for environmental portraits in addition to wide-angle landscapes. Thus bokeh quality is important to me, and also why I went back to this video about 16-35GM. The Tamron just isn't that great for this, while my other camera body is often occupied with 85mm and can't mount the GM. (The other option is to replace the 85mm with a standard F/2.8 zoom, but also some compromises to make) Admittedly, the Sigma is even less relevant.
The 16-35mm is actually on the compatibility list for the Ronin-SC with a * saying it needs a counterweight. I contacted DJI - a counterweight is coming. Smallrig just announced one too, coming 7th October
Basically: if the extra 7mm reach really, really matters, Sony. Or just crop. Seriously, you won’t get that much more background compression between 28mm and 35mm. Or take the $$$ savings and buy a nice 35mm.
I just bought my Sony 16-35gm. I considered the Tamron but chose Sony. I had the 16-35 F4 and sold it to help fund the purchase. I like the weight, the feel of quality, durability and the excellent image quality. I do use the focus hold button and manual focusing is easier with the switch. The money was a consideration and at more than half the price the Tamron was tempting. I just don't like settling for second best, if that.
My brain tells me: “sell the GM , it’s too expensive and heavy, and get the 17-28 and maybe another lens” but i’m struggling since my heart loves the GM,it’s the one lens that pretty much stays in my camera, love the 16-35mm versatility and the quality of the landscape, street, and portrait shots that i get out of it.
Did you sell it ?😅 I am thinking about buying a used one (1400€) since right now I am just using a Loxia 21. it is a great lense, but the versatility of the GM is so much better... . However, I am still concerned about the weight. And due to corona I cannot see it in real life

@Zason Vong I plan to do mostly wedding and looking at the current 17-28 f2.8 and sony 16-35 f4 will be a good call to consider the sony at f4 or wait for the sigma 14-24 f2.8 for the comparision

Jason Vong what would you do? My kids want to buy my next lens for my birthday. I have the Tamron 28- 70 and the 70 -180. They were getting me the 17-28. But i saw the 35 1.4 gm. I like the picture quality. We were getting the wide 17-28 for travel. I was thinking 35 is also wide.
Hi I’m new to photography and Sony user. I got the Sony a7r3 with Sony 85mm/FE 1.8 as my first set up. What do you recommend for a zoom lens for landscape and astrophotography? Or just a zoom lens since I have the 85mm. Also not so heavy on the wallet. Thanks for all your reviews and everything. I’m learning a lot from you.

That onion-ring "bokeh" roughness on the Tamron glass is so frustrating... and IS getting to be an issue on my year old 28-75. :( a little more polishing would go a very long way Tamron!
Hi Jason. excellent video as usual. I have the A73 and the 28-75 and the 70-200. I also have the a 6400 with a 10-18. I was looking for another lens for my a6400. What tripod or mount r u using where u had both cameras on at the same time. Anyone who wants to review 2 lenses that's def the best way to get a true side by side comparison
It seems like a lot of people are jumping to the GM as the competition, but really I think the f4 is the true competition. Because yeah, the GM and the Tamron are both 2.8, but there's also like $1300 between them. There's compromises between the Tamron and the GM, but you do get more (if subtle) for your money. Between the f4 and the Tamron, though? Now that's a great win. For me, I'm *already* not willing to spend 2200 on the GM, so it's really like, well would I get the f4 Sony or the Tamron?
Jason, I'm getting lots of noise in my shadows / darks, shooting HLG3, iso is very low, like 200-400, shooting sony a7iii and using sony 85mm 1.8 -- as my resident expert, I thought I'd see if there's something I'm missing on the a7iii or what I'm doing wrong. Thanks! Will be getting the tamron soon!
I was very skeptical about tamron cause I wanted to keep all my lenses native sony, but I don’t shoot wide very often so bought this lens and I’m blown away how good it is for the price, got it for 895$ from Adorama , at the end you get 42 mm in crop mode which is perfect, don’t think a lot just buy it. Thank you for review Jason
No way unless you can get the GM for a cheaper price it makes no sense. I bought the GM recently for £1310 preowned and its £2099 on the sony website. Sold the Tamron for £530 so i get the GM for just over £800 so that's not too bad considering I bought the Tamron last year for £899
Sweet review Jason, loving the music and vibe in general. Im buying this lens. I just need to do another freelance job with my Tamron 28-75 and I’ll have the money to do so. Then I’ll have the perfect combo
Been waiting almost 2 months for my tamron preorder....if I get one more “we’re sorry but your item is still on back order” email I might just get the g master
Uhmmm, am I going mad, or you tried to use some suggestion-technique to make us believe these lenses render the same color? At the very second,You said they are ALMOST identical colorwise (~0:55), what I saw is TOTALY different colors, to the point I thought white balance is different between recordings, especially true in skin tones. Tamron is much, much warmer, and, because I am watching really carefully all the reviews, trying to decide for myself what to buy, it is usually the fact between Tamrons (and most other 3rd party lenses) and Sony ...I know it is easy to fix in post, but, for the sake of truth ... ...
I wonder if Jason got a bad copy of the Tamron? His is the only video where the Tamron looks softer, and has worse auto focus walking towards the lens. Strange.
Close focusing!!!!! Thank you for that. One look at my content and you might see why that’s important. Any other lens suggestions? Thinking of going with Sony a7iv. Current issue with iPhone is that everything is blurry with that 1.5 aperture.
The title of this video is basically “Do you want to get in an argument with your wife or have her divorce you?”

It seems like a lot of people are jumping to the GM as the competition, but really I think the f4 is the true competition. Great video, I’m thinking to get GM.
Hey Jason, what nd filter thing I saw you have on the tamron?
Polar pro ND filter
Definitely interested in the sigma 14-24 review.
Hope your review is here soon
Well the sigma art one is only for crop sensor right?
Please make a video comparison of sigma 14-24 f2.8 art lens and zeiss 16-35mm f4
there is no way anyone can look at both these lenses and think "yah, sony's is worth the extra 1300 bucks!"
No way unless you can get the GM for a cheaper price it makes no sense. I bought the GM recently for £1310 preowned and its £2099 on the sony website. Sold the Tamron for £530 so i get the GM for just over £800 so that's not too bad considering I bought the Tamron last year for £899
I'm not getting any money out of photography so after such a long time agonizing, I guess I will get both tamron zoom lenses.
another great video. thanks potato jet!
Sweet review Jason, loving the music and vibe in general. Im buying this lens. I just need to do another freelance job with my Tamron 28-75 and I’ll have the money to do so. Then I’ll have the perfect combo
That thumbs up at the end, thought it was potato jet for a sec lol
You r the gmaster. Love watching ur videos thanks..
could you do a review of Sigma 14-24 DG DN
Been waiting almost 2 months for my tamron preorder....if I get one more “we’re sorry but your item is still on back order” email I might just get the g master
world_wide_wes try greentoe, got one in a whim, no wait, and discount on top of that. They search multiple small scale shops
Bonus advantage of the GM: it's available 🤣
Charlie N thanks for the tip!
Sony doesnt even have a lens factory....Tamron makes their lenses which could be why there so similar
Man ohh man I want the Tammy. Great comparison, short and straight to the point. Great vid buddy.
I love my GM, buy either.
What about the new Sigma 14-24? I havent seen anyone compare that one yet.
I'd love to see that review/comparison too!
waiting for the Sigma vs Tammy :D
Any updates for the new sigma 24-70 f/2.8 lens?
Uhmmm, am I going mad, or you tried to use some suggestion-technique to make us believe these lenses render the same color? At the very second,You said they are ALMOST identical colorwise (~0:55), what I saw is TOTALY different colors, to the point I thought white balance is different between recordings, especially true in skin tones. Tamron is much, much warmer, and, because I am watching really carefully all the reviews, trying to decide for myself what to buy, it is usually the fact between Tamrons (and most other 3rd party lenses) and Sony ...I know it is easy to fix in post, but, for the sake of truth ... ...
Was this filmed in Pasadena, CA
I have that Loawa 10-18 on my dream board. JESUS! 5:22
shut up
I wonder if Jason got a bad copy of the Tamron? His is the only video where the Tamron looks softer, and has worse auto focus walking towards the lens. Strange.
Close focusing!!!!! Thank you for that. One look at my content and you might see why that’s important. Any other lens suggestions? Thinking of going with Sony a7iv. Current issue with iPhone is that everything is blurry with that 1.5 aperture.
What about at 24mm is it still a drastic difference?
You have helped me finally make up my mind about this. Thank you! Tammy it is
For anyone curious about the Sigma 14-24 for e mount Jason mentioned I have a quick look on my channel.
