Building the TotalBoat Sport Dory - Episode 1 (Season 2 Premiere)

  • This is it! The premiere episode of Tips from a Shipwright: Season 2 featuring the one and only Master Shipwright Louis Sauzedde!
This season, Lou will be showing us how to build an ideal 14 foot wooden sailing dory, incorporating his newest ideas and concepts for this new and unique TotalBoat Sport Dory build.
The series will feature 36 videos, released on Friday's, 6 of which will feature an audience Q&A where fans can ask Lou questions about the build and more. The dory will not only have all the abilities and tools needed to function and navigate well under sail, but will also be trimmed as a rowing dory, and will also have the ability to accommodate a small gas or electric outboard motor, which could be neatly hidden and used from a through-hull motor well, within the boat itself.
Lou will also incorporate an altogether different idea he has for avoiding the drag of a conventional rudder on sailing dories, and will use an oar instead, building a unique through-hull pivot port for an oar to better serve as the dory’s rudder.
Watch an Introduction to Dory designs and plans - • An introduction to Dor...
In Episode 1, Lou will show you the tools and implements he uses to actually plan and make up the drawings needed to build this sailing dory. He will then take you over to his friend’s saw mill, right here in Exeter, Rhode Island, where he will select the proper log of Atlantic White Cedar that he advises using for this boat. You will see how planning and cutting this log into the most and best possible planks is planned and done! Join us once again, as Lou and takes us on another adventure through the planning and building of this new and exciting 14 foot sailing dory!

have to add another comment as I watch more and more of this video.
The way that you actually go out, pick out your logs, and have them sawed brings back some great memories for me from when I was a teenager and my uncle was into building his open fishing boat here on the east coast of Newfoundland. local forest consisted mainly of juniper (I think it is referred to as larch in most other parts), white and black spruce, and fir, the better woods like oak and cedar were rarely used. Every fall, we would head into the woods to select and harvest the trees that he would select for the knees, ribs, and planks for the two boats her would build over the winter (one to use the following year himself and the other to sell in the spring). He would spend many a day throughout the winter out in the boat shed cutting, steaming, and bending all the planks and ribs for each boat. To be in the presence of a craftsman like him was something special. Much like watching your videos Louis.
Those were special times, Unfortunately my uncle has since passed on and took the knowledge of his boatbuilding skills with him.
In his last years, he really thought it was sacrilegious when I purchased my first fiberglass boat. However, the fibreglass was all about the lower maintenance required over a planked boat. However, a true planked wooden boat will always ride better and handle the lumpy water much better than any fiberglass boat out there.

Love the board. When I was attending Louis Pasteur Junior High School in Orangevale California our shop teacher taught us how to use the drafting board, mark measurements and use the different types of pencils and triangles. I still use those skills today 45 years later. In fact he would not even allow us to build anything unless we drew it properly first. What a teacher and great man he was in teaching us skills we would use all our lives in that Wood and Metal Shop class. You remind me of him in so many ways, a very meticulous, purposeful and goal driven teacher. Thanks for all the great videos you guys produce and share all your valued skills with us here, your fans. Best wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

Oh man, I can't get past the opening shot of you toolin' down that beautiful hiway. Shades of Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper-it almost makes me cry. Having been a professinal woodworker (a patternmaker trained through the apprenticeship program), I can really appreciate your attention to detail, reverence to the wood and it's natural strengths and weaknesses, and your application of traditional and contemporary methods to produce a unique work of functional art. Let's hope your transfer of knowledge will help continue the passion you display. Many thanks.

Nothing like custom cut planks/wood. You get almost exactly what you want and need, and that means less processing back at the shop, and less waste from what extra you have to buy to get the pieces you need. Great setup and Sawyer you have a relationship with.

20 years ago my brother and I worked a summer job at Cove Haven when Lou was restoring Intrepid. I distinctly remember Lou rolling in to the boat yard on that Harley in the mornings and watching him walk around with a #5 doing stuff I had never seen before. Definitely left an impression on me that shaped my ideas as a maker. He told me one day that great thing about that bike was that with a shifter like was that no one ever asked to take it for a ride.
