At the age of 12 in 1988 I wasn't even allowed to leave the cul-de-sac where I lived with my parents. I wasn't allowed to be walking the streets or hanging about on street corners let alone be carrying knives and machetes.
Then people try to tell me that this country hasn't changed. What a load of garbage. This country has gone way downhill since my childhood.

No. Because then you set a precedent which means ALL Minors caught up in the legal system, whether victims or criminals can thereafter be named. Or did you not think of that? Did you think at all?
Children are not named legally in such cases for a reason, and it is less to protect them than to protect others in the legal system. Problem is if you waive those protections for one, you waive them for ALL....
And before you argue, much of our legal system is set by PRECEDENT. You do something that sets a precedent. Allowing these two to be named sets that precedent for all, and that INCLUDES children who are being kept anonymous because they are at risk for example.
I suggest you THINK before you demand....

@@alganhar1 It's a simple matter to permit the disclosure of the identities of under-age killers if convicted. Precedent? The tragic Jamie Bulger case. My 37 year old daughter has A-levels and a degree in science and is doing great in her career, but has the character and intent to get her sisters and brother put into the care system. Then all children convicted of a crime would be known. That is wrong.
Millions of people, adults, have committed crimes and their crime has not been 'named and shamed' in the media.
Children under a certain age do not think like adults, they can make bad choices, why should they be punished for the rest of their lives for something they would not have done if they were older?

Agree about parents needing to be held responsible for their children. Dog owners need a licence and are criminally responsible for their dogs’ behaviours. Same must apply to humans. There are no excuses that correct parenting could not have avoided. Enough of the “I didn’t know”. If your child is feral, or you have concerns, there are people, even police, you can call. If you don’t call or make contact with someone who could help you, you are equally culpable in their behaviour and should be equally responsible as their adult supervisor.

I believe that in the case of the parents being charged in the United States for the gun attack, it was found that the parents had given this child a gun as a birthday gift. And had not kept it locked away from his random use. I believe the boy was around 6 or 7 years old and had indicated several times his intent might have been to kill. It was horrendous. The two parents did not even take responsibility or express regrets until it looked like they were going to be charged. I believe this child had given clear indications at school that he was obsessed with killing and the parents refused to pick up their kid and take him out of school for psychiatric evaluation. He had brought the gun in his backpack. It was, I believe, his teacher, whom he shot. His parents had taken him to a gun range to learn how to use the gun. When the crime happened, the parents did not make themselves available to be reached and seemed more interested in avoiding any responsibility being placed on them.

Even in primary school most boys carried a penknife and teachers would often ask to borrow one. The shame if yours was not sharp. To my certain knowledge non of us stabbed anyone in my local area. I can't speak for those in the big towns and cities as I have always preferred living in small towns or villages. Later in the late 50s/early 60s I attended a local grammar school and we were able to take our knives for sharpening and air rifles for maintenance in the metal workshop. Machetes? If that picture they showed was the murder weapons, those were two full on swords. Are the news people really that stupid to call those machetes? How in the world do two twelve year old boys walk down the street with those and nobody say anything?

You must be slow. A machete is a sword of type. Albeit an unrefined more wide bladed one. It pays to know what you are talking about. They are used internationally especially in the agricultural industry. The Caribbean ie West Indies use them. Are you stupid????? A 12 year old male student started at our daughters school. On his first day, he went in with a knife, on the second day, he caused a fight with a grade 10 student, pulled his knife out, a teacher got involved and anded up getting punched. The police were called and took him away. Yesterday we found out he is being welcomed back to school. He had previously been expelled fron another school for the same behaviour, doesn't this sound similar?

Where is our army? The public AND the police, need REAL protection. Did these young boys ever have parents? Irresponsible or otherwise? How many people have to die before something is done to protect us all? Will the civil service stand in the way? I don't have the answers, but it's on the tory watch. Watched by the opposition labour party. They both have to go. TLDR - vote Reform and start praying.

You only have to go into your local supermarket and see how out of control some children are, their parents stand there and totally ignore what their doing as though it’s nothing to do with them. I really don’t know how teachers put up with some of these rowdy children. My granddaughter works in one of these school’s that cater for difficult children, they spit and kick out at her if things don’t go there way,I’ve got animals that don’t behave like that and these are ferrel kittens that adopted me after I fed them when they were starving, they sit quietly and patiently waiting for their food and they respond to a whistle at feeding time if I’m a little early feeding them,it’s amazing how they know the time that I feed them.

Having worked with these type of children who were doing sentences longer than they have been alive and asked them what would deter them from walking around with a knife or killing another person. Most said if they faced the death penalty or incarcerated forever they might reconsider. The rest of them had a don't care kind of attitude and it was a case of either they get killed, or the other person does, so they would rather do the time and come out to restart their lives in their 40s. This country and the future of our children/grandchildren is doomed if sentences aren't toughened.

This was the case in my country (Poland) in the 1980s. I was brought up in the belief that if I did something very wrong, my parents would also suffer the consequences. England is starting to become a failed country. It is getting worse and worse every year and apart from talking, nobody is doing ANYTHING about it. It's like the USA, access to guns and and regular crying and mourning.

    • @luz9979

No, look at this situation from a different perspective - the states where guns are allowed to the public have got a lot less crime because each criminal knows that people can have guns and shoot them back. More crime happens in states where people are winging about human rights and ban of the weapons. If we are people in the UK were allowed to have self protected weapons do you think that gay would not shoot that one in self-defence? Things are that the government is taking your basic right to defend yourself but criminals still got the weapons and always will be. And law very often on their side ....poor criminals from disadvantaged backgrounds......oh....

It's very obvious what's gone wrong. Poverty, tension, reduction in youth services, lack of hope, years of dreadful TV, Grand Theft Auto, etc. GTA literally features kids running through shopping centres with machetes; we have trained young people to see all this as normal. These games are our number one 'toys' - think about it. Our society - our whole society - has raised these children. Jail is a sign of a sick and failing society - it isn't a deterrent. We're capable of so much better than this.
