    You should be tinning your connection points and wires first. So much easier and stronger connection.

    I was hesitant because other cable-making videos haven’t actually zoomed in on what’s being soldered so I didn’t have confidence to try this til UOUR video, I made one today and it works great! Thanks so much!

    Just priced solderless. Yeah, can't afford that. So funny you were talking about patch cables today and I do a search on pancake connectors and this was top video. Nice tutorial. Thanks.

    Cool tutorial. Just finished my 1st patch cable. The shoebox with a hole helps big time, I wouldn't come up with this one by myself lol.

    I'm converting to solderless but nothing so far has beat the pancake for space considerations on my board. Thanks for this lesson and I suspect like a bunch of other folks; thanks for sharing the simple shoe box holder. That will make life much easier.

    These are great but the downside is on Stereo outs or ins they bump in to each other not good. Better to use the standard normal elbow ones for Stereo Ins or Outs which are closer together

    What cable works best with this cable end?

    • @TheParanoidAndroid79
      @TheParanoidAndroid79 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mogami 2524 and 2319 are commonly used. 2524 is better with regards to capacitance and shielding, but it is a heavier cable and less flexible.

  • @drfeelgordo
    @drfeelgordo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    i bought some mogami cable to use for these pancake plugs but the ground shielding is way to thick to get into the hole. can i separate the ground and solder half to the hole and half to the jack itself?

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that will definitely work. The hole is a nice guide, but it's not the only way to ground. The only thing about grounding to the shell is that it can be harder to get the shell hot enough without a decent iron.

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      don't worry about getting it all in the hole, you can solder the ground to the connector tab without being in the hole at all and it will pass signal just fine. The hole is just a bit more convenient if you have a ground or lead that will pass through it.

    • @GuitarNTabs

      Funny you'd mention it, RawHP!
      I bought some Mogami cable too and found out that the ground wire is really thick...
      It took me a couple of tries to get it absolutely right, but it is indeed possible.
      I found that the trick is to tin both the wires and the connectors, before soldering anything.
      Then place the wires on top of the connectors, on at the time, I start with the ground, and then just lightly hold the soldering iron to it, and then it will 'melt' nicely together!
      By doing that I've gotten superb results - not a single faulty cable so fat - and I've been checking it with my cable tester.
      Cheers!

      What do you mean by dinning the wire?

    • @frankryan8100
      @frankryan8100 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      D.O.M.D Wolf dip the wire in flux and then dab a little solder on it. Not a glob, just a thin coat.

    • @stu-j
      @stu-j 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@frankryan8100 no need for flux with modern fluxless solder. The pure solder used in plumbing needs it but not this stuff.

    ...or you could just buy Rockboard patch cables. They’re flatter, thinner, and more pliable. More room on your board and less space between pedals

    • @SyntheticFuture
      @SyntheticFuture ปีที่แล้ว

      Downside: if you need custom lengths that's not an option. Pre-made cables as in general more expensive.
      If you have just a few cables that's no biggy. If your board has 20 cables like mine is going to have... Well it adds up 😅

    Ive been spending hours trying to do this and its impossible. My bullshit ebay pancake connectors didnt come with any paper caps to shield the cases of the connector, the solder isnt sticking to the ground and by the time it does the plug is fucking fried. What a goddamn waste of time.

      JackstandJohnny woah, link to the jacks you bought?

    • @JackstandJohnny
      @JackstandJohnny 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are just cheap ones on eBay. In fact, most of them are built like
      that. I tried several times to use them while ruining them in the
      process before emailing the company for a refund. Theyre in China so
      they gave me a half refund and let me keep them because of shipping.
      then I turned around and just bought these GLS jacks off their website.
      They are currently $30 for 20 of them. I paid I think $15 for $20 of
      them or something like that on eBay. Anyways here is the link to the
      ones I bought on eBay and again DO NOT BUY THESE. THEY ARE JUNK:

      Solder does not stick when heat isn't transferred correctly. I think everyone has this frustration when they rush right in without fist learning the principles and correct techniques of soldering. Flux, pre-tinning, solder bridge to transfer heat, etc. Best video to learn is from Pace. th-cam.com/video/vIT4ra6Mo0s/w-d-xo.html
