The store at the intersection of Crenshaw and Slauson is the center of neighborhood life. It is also the center of Hussle’s plan to remake and revive the area where he grew up in an attempt to break the cycle of gang life that lured him in when he was younger.
Hussle had recently bought the entire shopping center, where he once sold his mix CDs from the trunk of his car, planning to turn it into a mixed-use residential and commercial center. He spends nearly 30 minutes in the lot signing autographs, talking to old friends, taking selfies with fans, as he often did. He never makes it inside the store.

There is no evidence he intends to go there or knows Hussle will be there. As the woman is parking, she spots the rapper. “I was like, ‘Ooh, there goes Nipsey Hussle, he look fine,” she would later remember saying. “I want to take a picture.’” She doesn’t know Holder knows Hussle. Holder walks into a burger place in the complex, orders chili cheese fries, and steps outside to wait. Hussle spots Holder. “Is that Sh-y?” he asks a friend 07 p.m. - Kerry Lathan, 56, and his nephew Shermi Villanueva arrive in the parking lot headed to The Marathon. Villanueva had told Lathan he needed a lot more new clothes since he had been wearing the same things in the months since he was released on parole from prison for a murder conviction. Hussle had sent Lathan a care package after his release, as he did for many ex-convicts from his neighborhood as they re-entered the outside world. Lathan had met Hussle once before and is pleased to see him. 3:09 p.m. - Holder, who is shirtless, showing the large tattoo that reads “SIXTIES” across his stomach, and the woman walk over to Hussle. The rapper tells Holder that word on the street is he has been “snitching,” according to the grand jury testimony of Hussle’s friend and employee Herman Douglas, who is standing next to him. Douglas hears Hussle tell Holder there are rumors he has been talking to authorities about the Rollin’ 60s gang, and that police documents or court records show it.
“You need to address it,” Hussle says, according to Douglas. “You know, basically telling the guy you need to be careful, you know, because people got some paperwork on you,” Douglas testified, adding that Hussle was “more or less trying to look out for the dude.” Holder responds that those talking about him have only been “hating on me.” Holder asks if Nipsey or anyone around him had heard his new song, and all say no. 3:19 p.m. - Holder walks up to Hussle and says “You’re through,” according to one witness, then opens fire with the pistol and a revolver, shooting Hussle at least 10 times. One shot hits his head. Another lodges in his lung. Another severs his spine, the LA County coroner would find. “You got me,” a witness hears Hussle say as he falls to the ground. Holder kicks Hussle twice in the head and flees. Lathan and Villanueva, who had been standing next to Hussle, are both shot, but neither were critically injured.

Hussle is still breathing, and Samiel, under instructions from a 911 operator gives him CPR. “He was still breathing, you know, like biting his tongue a little bit, then he - he was just trying to fight it, trying to gain consciousness, and he was going out,” Douglas later testified. “And he just kept - he just kept fighting.” An ambulance arrives and takes Hussle away. It is not until he is lifted on to a stretcher that those around him realize he has been shot in the head.3:55 p.m. - Hussle is declared dead at a hospital.

April 1, 2019, about 8 a.m. - Holder tells the woman he didn’t want to go home because it was “dirty” and she helps him get a room at a nearby Motel 6.
8 p.m. - An impromptu memorial for Hussle that began the day before peaks with a crowd of hundreds at The Marathon store parking lot, lighting candles, playing Hussle’s music, singing and dancing. Hussle’s killing had come at a time of an uptick in violence in the neighborhood, and fear of a retaliatory shooting was heavy in the air when the crowd at one point hears gunfire and flees in a stampede that left 19 people injured. Two women had minor injuries from gunshots.
10:30 p.m. - After a long day of silence on the possibility of arrests or motive in the killing, Los Angeles police release the name and description of Holder, calling him a suspect, and giving a description and license plate number of the woman’s Chevy Cruze.
11 p.m. - The woman sees the description of her car on the evening news. “Oh my God,” she tells her mother. “My car is on here and everything, and I didn’t do anything. I didn’t know this boy was gonna do this.”
April 2, 2020, 7 a.m. - The woman and her mother go to the local police station to turn herself in. The front desk officer says “don’t worry about it” and “don’t listen to the news,” court transcripts show. The LAPD later opened an internal investigation into why the woman was turned away at such a crucial time in the investigation and a detective in grand jury testimony said that the officer had missed a morning briefing. The woman leaves the station, returning later to speak to detectives after her mother called police again. She speaks to detectives for five hours. Police search her house, Holder’s house, and a relative’s house. They would not find the guns used in the shooting.About 12:05 p.m. - A 911 call reports a man resembling Holder walking in the city of Bellflower, 17 miles southwest of the crime scene. He is arrested without incident.
April 4, 2020 - Holder is charged with Hussle’s murder, and the attempted murder of Lathan and Villanueva. In his initial court appearance he is represented by Christopher Darden, made famous in his role as a prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial. Darden drops off the case days later and a public defender takes over.

I want everybody to know man, Nip put his heart and soul on Crenshaw and Slauson.”

You got this PARTIALLY wrong bro. They said that Nip and Big U got into it over studio equipment but deeper than that they got into it because Nip cut Big U out his deal and moved on without him. So yeah big U was tryna extort nip but not on some you gotta give the OG's and me money type shit but on some Im yo manager and I want to control your career and money type shit.
1. Nipsey was already rapping and already building a BUZZ in his community. Big U got out of jail and went to Steve Lobel and said he wanted to start a music label called Uneek Music. Then big U went back to jail in the 90's for prolly like 10-13 years ( IDK the exact dates ) so when big U got out in the 2000's he linked back up with Steve Lobel and basically was like I wanna hit the ground running and find some talent and build the record label.
2. Nipsey had already been passing out CD's and selling bootleg DVD's in the hood and was popular and well known due to his look and his charisma. Nipsey was intelligent and was already utilizing myspace and the internet to promote his music as well as handing out CD's which is how he had his first encounter with the game according to the game himself. So when Steve and Big U was talent scouting in the 60's they were asking people for rappers and every told Big U that Nip was next up forsure. So they met wit Nip and big u was like yup he looks like snoop he sound west coast official and he from my hood we gone make money off him for sure. So I believe they helped Nip shoot some videos and they took him to a couple of record labels in LA but no one wanted to sign him because no one wanted to deal with Big U and his shady business tactics not to mention nipsey was from the 60's as well so no one wanted them to overrun the building.
3. Johny Shipes who was in NY seen Nipsey on myspace and he was trying to impress his father and start his own record label called Cinematic and he felt that Nipsey would be a great artist to start off with. So basically Steve Lobel and Big U couldn't get Nipsey signed a deal but it was Nips on music and talent that was able to shine through and he got a deal with Cinematic records. Big U and Steve Lobel took all the credit for this and Nip allowed them to be his managers. So Nip, label and big U along with cinematic records began to promote nip by having him at radio stations all over LA and NY which had success but they knew they needed to expose him on a larger scale. Big U reached out one of his blood homies by the name of wack 100 who happened to be games manager and game remembered Nip who was selling CD's out his trunk and was impressed by him. Big U asked wack for a favor to allow Nipsey to go on tour with game and wack 100 and the game said yeah and that when Nipsey and the Game made a song called they roll and shot the video while on tour. But Nip was smart and he was noticing how Big U didn't do anything for his career and Steve Lobel could have been helpful but he was afraid of Big U and had to go along with Big U program and Nipsey wanted to grow and do his own thing. big U wanted to Market Nipsey like snoop and Nip wanted to be his own man also Nip had a vision for his career and knew that big U would only get in the way of that so Nip was thinking about how he should go about his next moves. The deciding factor for Nip was when the tour bus that Nip was on was hit by the feds because they thought Nip and Big U were moving drugs throughout country using the tour and the tour bus as a disguise for their drug muling business. When this happened Nip went to jail and had to use all the money from his record deal advance to fight a case that he had nothing to do with and no knowledge of what was going on.
4. After Nip beat his case he talked to Johny Shipes separately from Big U and Steve Lobel and told him that he wanted out of the deal. Johny Shipes was a friend of Nips not big u or Steve lobel, Big U caused johny shipes record label to tank because once epic found out about the drug muling allegations they cut off financial backing to the imprint that Johny shipes had called Cinematic. Big U and Steve Lobel were still under contract for one album and they wanted Nip to finish recoding the album " South Central State of Mind " so they could get the back end money from the record label but Nip refused. Johny Shipes and cinematic agreed to let nip out of his contract obligations without prejudice meaning they don't own any of Nips music and he doesn't owe them any money, they wiped the slate clean as if he was never signed and allowed him to have a fresh start. Nip began to work independently with his brother black sam using the money he made on tour with game and whatever other side hustle he was doing and they put their money together and got studio equipment so that Nip could keep rapping.
5. This is where the Big U fight comes into play. Som say it was about music some say it was about gang politics and Nip shooting music videos with YG and Tyga and all that but what we do know for certain is that Big U was pissed that Nipsey didn't want to finish the south central state of mind album and that nip cut ties with cinematic and cut Big U and Steve Lobel out his business and started moving independently on his own. Nip made a song call U don't got a clue to express his frustrations about Big U tryna be his manager and had no clue as to how to manage an artist, also it is rumored that Nip and His first baby mama had a tumultuous relationship and that was big U niece. So all this accumulated and was the final straw for Big U because now there was song floating around the hood with Nip dissing Big U. So Big U called up Nip and they talked about it and Big U said Nip had to get his discipline. So when big U came to get Nipsey for his DP blacc sam and nipsey's pops intervened and then Big U starting fighting Nips dad and blacc sam and some of the people big u was wit start fighting some of the people on nipseys side and nip came and started squabbling wit big U and it was an all out brawl in the alley way of Slauson T's. Shit was getting hectic and nip and sams dad was in the mix so to break everything up blacc sam popped a couple shots in the air. As blacc sam shot his gun in the air the police pulled up and immediately began shooting at blacc sam at close range and somehow they missed him completely and he ran but was later on arrested and booked in country jail. Later on that night big U and Nipsey had a conversation and Idk if they squabbled again but I know that whatever happened they both walked away with a Mutual respect. There were 60's who backed big U but there were also 60's who backed Nip and Nip had enough support to stand on his own two feet so Big U had to back up off him. and truth be told Big U did have love for Nip because Nip was close to big U's kids and they loved Nip and so did Big U wife. So because of that Big U backed off him and Nip went on to do his thing and his career began to sore.
6. After some years went by and Nip was successful and secure in his position he reached out to Big U and they sat down as men and had a conversation and they slowly started to patch their relationship back up. Sam wast fuckin wit it tho, he know big U has some shady ways about him and sam felt like he was who he was and will always be that person. You can't say that Big U called a hit on Nipsey because they had plans together and Nip was gonna help Big U with his Developing Options program and spoke on behalf of the program at a city council meeting to talk about ways to get more funding for Big U and that was all out of Nips free will. No one was extorting Nip and he made that very clear. Big U even angrily stated that he makes no money from or with Nip and he did sound salty about it but Nip came back around and helped Big U with his own business and even had big U in the studio to let him listen to his victory lap album. So its safe to say they were patching things up and since Big U hasn't really done anything major in music since his involvement with Nip and the fact that nip was finally being cool with him again I highly doubt that he would want to have Nip killed at that moment because they were on the up and up. I think Big U was salty and took it as a personal L that nip was able to get out of his clutches with his manhood intact and I think big U also had to respect it. I think that's the reason Big U laughed when they said justice for Nip because it was like see in the end I won because im still here after all these years or maybe he laughed because he wanted street justice for Nip and not legal justice but then again Big U wasn't invited or allowed into the funeral because blacc sam wasnt fuckin wit him so who knows???
