Carol Delaney depicts Christopher Columbus to have been neither a greedy imperialist nor a quixotic adventurer, as often seen in the prism of present-day perspectives, but as a man driven by an abiding religious passion.

Wow. An actual scholar who cares about true history and not warping history to promote her own ideology

This is a an excellent book, one everyone that wants to understand the truth of what motivated Columbus and real story of his discovery of America rather than the lies that are told about him constantly. Delaney has given us a rare gift.

Excellent! I will read the book right away. It is so easy to interpret Columbus in an 'ethnocentric' way, assuming that medieval European culture is the same as our culture. Congrats to Carol Delaney for delving into the contemporary reality of Columbus' Europe!

Knowing that this was said twelve years ago is interesting. At that time, most people who thought that we were in apocalyptic times were worried about the Mayan calendar. We seem to have gotten through that one without it becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. No one seems to see today's events as apocalyptic, but I worry that we are much closer to an apocalypse.

      1. Watch Israel carefully.
      2. "Apocalypse" simply means "a revealing" or "un-hidden" and is often misused and incorrectly defined.
      3. She is absolutely wrong about self-fulfilling prophecy; that dismissive statement reveals her ignorance of eschatology. The few parts of Revelation that involve human actions are done by people hostile to the book, not the believers themselves.

Apocalyptic hysteria, or belief has been going on in the human psyche, probably since the first terrifying thunder and lightening storm.
I remember that nutty hysteria around the Mayan calendar. It was so stupid.
In Columbus' day it made more sense. The bubonic plague alone was so horrifying.

All of the biblical places that we know of was originally located in America, and this is a fact that America is the oldest land. The other places that they set up over there in the Middle East of Jerusalem was constructed Utah is the land of Judah the Middle East do not have 12,000 feet mountains, and the description of Judah is the book of Deuteronomy!! Atlantis in America!! I can reference so many books and articles, but just do some research and you’ll see

    ARZARETH:
By: Morris Jastrow, Jr., Kaufmann Kohler
The name of the land beyond the great river, far away from the habitation of man, in which the Ten Tribes of Israel will dwell, observing the laws of Moses, until the time of the restoration, according to IV Esd. xiii. 45. Columbus identified America with this land. (See Kayserling's "Christopher Columbus," translated by Dr. C. Gross, p. 15.)

If you visit Jerusalem you will see that the Israeli Jews have prepared everything and have it ready and waiting for the day the Temple Mount is back under their control. The dome and mosque that stands there now was only put there by the Muslims as a way of adding insult to injury, a mosque built as a symbol of victory as is tradition. (Same reason why a mosque was built where the World Trade Center used to be in NYC.) Neither site has any true significance to Islam other than to deny the Jewish people their own holy site.

    • @claymcdermott718

He read Revelation as describing a scenario where Jerusalem is in Christian hands (in 1492 it wasn’t any more) and requiring the Temple on Mt Zion to be rebuilt. So, he thought Christians had to make that happen for Jesus to come back and perfectly and justly govern the world.

There is a lot of evidence to support the idea that Columbus was a crypto Jew.Many of the passengers on his ships were Jews escaping Spain,1492 was the year Ferdinand and Isabella expelled the Jews from Spain on the day of Tisha B'Av the 9th of Av which is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. On that day 500 yrs apart, both the First and Second Temples were destroyed in Jerusalem.

Do not forget that Christianity and Judaism are two parts of the same tree. Yeshua (Jesus) and ALL the New Testament writers were Jewish. True Christianity is only fully understood as a complimentary fulfillment of the Jewish scriptures in the person of Messiah (Christ).
...then 600 years later a pedophilic, demon worshiping, slaver warlord invented his own religion based loosely on things he had poorly copied from Jews and Christians and declared himself a prophet. Then he declared war on Jews and Christians when they rejected him as an obvious phony. And they've been waging Jihad ever since.

@@viviancorey1822 Columbus was not Jewish. He came from a Catholic family, he constantly professed his devotion to the Virgin Mary, and the saints. He belonged to Catholic lay orders. I guess these old theories never die.

All of the biblical places was originally located in America hence why Christopher Columbus came here to recapture Jerusalem. We have more pyramids than anywhere else on the earth. We have way more artifacts being found here in we have the Giants proven in history, including being spotted in these times& many ancient articles, speaking of America being the oldest land. Atlantis in America. When rocks cry out we have so many books to prove that Jerusalem and the holy lands and the garden of Eden was always in America.

Why would you write a historical work to dispel a religious myth? Seems strange. A self-fulfilling prophecy is a prophecy nonetheless. I don't know why we'd assume it's false by definition. I'm no post-millennial, but this is a bad line of reasoning.
Appreciate the history, but leave religion to the religious.

No it was based on his experience as a navigator. He concluded there was a land mass much closer to Europe. His mistake was that he thought it was Asia.
