About Happy/Unhappy endings: I agree with and I’ll go further to say that I LOVE a bittersweet ending. Everything is great, you defeated the bbeg but you lost everything, or maybe you lost the battle but you saved a bunch more from impending doom. That definitely hits harder for me.
I didn't expect to love this as much as I did 😍 it really made me think about what I love to read and it surprised me 😅 And we are absolutely in tune about the no's!
i don’t love unhappy endings but they won’t ruin a book for me if they make sense and are maybe complex. like, if they leave me with interesting things to think about. a cheap weepy, i do not like. i actually agree with most of your placements, which was surprising and fun. do you ever get into nonfiction?

A good ending, happy or unhappy, has to be fitting. I was thinking of the ending of His Dark Materials. Lyra and Will have to be separated permanently, which is very sad, but it fits the story.

The chosen one!!! i immediately thought about Harry Potter, it’s like yes i love it when the hero does everything he could do to save the world and he/she has to grow up while the story and it’s The Gift + The Hero’s Effort but immediately NO if it is as in fifth generation of my little pony (sorry for this example but it suits the best)

I "like" the realism of unhappy endings. They sometimes annoy me in the moment (after first finishing the story), but after taking some time to reconcile the story, I do like it (Example: "Never Let Me Go"). I can't categorize it as "love" because of that initial annoyance, so I approve... "like." This was fun.
