I would actually be interested to see one of these naval battles. Just the sight of the Colosseum being filled with water alone would be really impressive.
Imagine how cool and terrifying it would look like
I'm disappointed they haven't put this in a movie yet
I was thinking we would get a Watergate video since it’s the 50th anniversary of Nixon’s resignation.
But this is awesome too 🔥👍🏼
Small correction in 25:45, the infamous Petrorian Guard auction wasn't immediately after Commodus assassination. Pertinax was chosen to succeed Commodus, and he refused to increase the pay of the army because the imperial finances were a wreck after Commodus reign, so the Petrorians murdered Pertinax and auctioned the position of emperor to the highest bidder, a senator named Didius Julianus.
Fun fact about Commodous: as good as he was, and as much as he rigged fights, there was still one man who was his superior in the arena: Julius Alexander, who was known to have such accomplishments as felling a lion with a javelin from horseback.
Commodus was so jelaous that he ordered his soldiers to hunt down and assassinate Julius Alexander, which they did in 190 AD.
Real Life matches the movie, eh?
@@dphalanx7465I think it’s a case of the movie being loosely based on real historical events.
Elephants would squash a rhino but you are right hippos are one of if not the most dangerous animal in a given year
Depends what your criteria is. I personally disqualify mosquitos because they are just a vector, but snakes/cobras absolutely eclipse everything else in terms of kills/year. Even domestic dogs and cats dwarf wild hippos.
@@Slowhandclap I am referring to wild animals and one species numbers that refer to snakes include multiple types and species and like I said they aren’t the most every year 🙂
@@battlefronthero3789 yeah, there are individual species of snakes which easily kill more people every year than hippos. It's a significant issue in South Asia where they often nest near humans.
@@Slowhandclap I see, that makes sense too, and may be true, but hippos are still easily among the most dangerous among land animals and especially in mammals
With all due respect rhino would get squashed by an elephant but would beat hippo comfortably in most scenarios. Rhino has tougher skin.
19:43 I mean that "see which animal would win" thing seems kinda interesting, ngl. 🤔
Hey VTH! Knoweldgia put out a video a couple months ago called "Why did the Confederates lose despite their big military victories?" and i would love to hear your commentary on their video. Y'know, if you feel like it.
And if not, that's okay too. Hope you're having a great day, ny friend.
PS the moustache is just *chef's kiss*
Your question about wanting to see this spectacle. Yeah I have thought about it, kinda would be interesting to see. Do you plan to do anymore Risk games with the other guys? Really enjoyed that.
Definitely will do more.
Man makes you think how similar our sports are to the gladiator fights! Just like Roman’s we love to see the big football hits
I mean, some were fanatics as we can see some similarities with football and races in Rome. There were many teams and they fought with each other ("Those About to Die" shows a bit of it). Later Justynian I the Great from Byzantine Empire fought pretty much civil war against the racing teams (I believe they were green and blue, but I might misremember).
American football is a kids game compared to Rugby.
@@peterjohnson1091 no rlly… I’d say they are equal. Just because on has no equipment doesn’t mean it’s harder
@@peterjohnson1091there’s always one of you
the smile at the beginning of your videos is got me through my first week of boarding school, I love and appreciate this channel and what you do so much!
The elephant grabbed a sword? That elephant must've studied the human fighters.
grabbed a spear, either way man thats insane
I guess you could say he studied the blade 😂
The will to survive is a powerful thing.
elephants are known to grab sticks in the wild and throw them at tigers and other predators as a projectile

If I watched the animal fights (either man vs animal or animal vs animal) I'm like 98% sure I would cry. So I wouldn't want to watch that.
But Gladiators vs each other or Gladiator vs Criminal ..... honestly I'd probably watch those.
Murmillo is just like the Gwinnett/Atlanta Gladiators Logo in ECHL is Ice Hockey 🏒
Great timing! I leave for my first trip to Italy one week from today and I'm really looking forward to Rome! I'm sure I will be spouting some of this info when we tour the Coliseum.
I thought a few times that it's be pretty kick-ass to watch some of them
That was a really good point about our fake gore entertainment now being essentially the same thing as these Roman matches! I never actually made the connection, but you’re totally right!
Chris just completely ignored Goro vs Scorpion.
I can just imagine some gladiator arena theming a bunch of women vs dwarf fights as some sort of "Amazon conquest" series of battles.😅
I would love to see that one matchup where the elephant used the spear to kill the rhino.. must have been epic
Just wanna say thank you for the uploads my man! Been a long time subscriber and you and like one other TH-camr are my constant watches. Awesome seeing how much you grew these past years and I’m just commenting to say we appreciate you!
Actually elephants would absolutely crush rhinos
I believe you are correct, in animal preserves in Africa, they will bring in additional male elephants, as a male elephant in musk gets very violent and they will kill rhinos if they do not have other male elephants to fight with. Male elephants are so dangerous that this is why we never saw them when things like circus elephants were around, those were always all female elephants.
On the Lion/Tiger question. The type of Lions used in those games were Barbary Lions(N. Africa). These Lions are extinct now and were thought to be larger than the savannah Lions which are still existing.
People underestimate elephants so much, the biggest Male African Savannah Elephant we have on record was 24,000lbs, and 13ft tall at the shoulders. For reference the biggest Polar Bears are around 2,000, biggest Rhino was around 9,000 and Hippo was 10,000lbs.
Elephants easily mog any other land animal and people barely acknowledge it.
No
@@stillmyboy6708 Got to love when people that knows nothing or perhaps have seen 1 youtube short and swallows it whole start to speak. xD
I would recommend Blue Jays new video on how to become a pirate king
Very interesting topic, and great to hear commentary on a subject with so many inaccuracies and misnomers shown in modern media.
About 10 or more years ago, there was a series on animal planet called animal face off. I remember being enamored by the idea of two fearsome animals going head-to-head and finding out which one would win. So all of the animal matchups the video talked about would have been very interesting to watch
Nicely timed video for me. I visited the colosseum last month and was fascinated with this historical events that went on there. The total lack of empathy was just staggering to me. How could a population enjoy seeing other people being slaughtered just baffled me. You guess that it was justified because the victims were all criminals and captured enemies. I could not watch something like this now but perhaps 2000 years ago I might have. Really like your channel.
I would have been interested and loved watching it all, especially blind fighting, sea battles, and animal vs animal
They made a character in Dune named Feyd Rautha who is a lot like Commodus (likely is based on him). He fights in a Colloseum with poisoned knives and his opponent is drugged. In Dune part 2 they made that scene black and white and it looks incredible. If you haven't seen it you should check it out.
I didn't finish the books, but it is intersting comparison and contains fair points. I wouldn't say that Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen is a lot like Commodus, but for sure gladatorial battles are inspired by roman ones. Feyd is just a Harkonnen and they are very specific people, enjoying many masochistic things - it is easy to point on baron Vladimir Harkonnen who could remind us of many awful people.
But yeah, using the idea of Black Sun in part 2 was very nice, it was probably one of, if not the, best scenes of the movie when we add music to it.
And to be honest! Feyd was really good fighter and in the movie one of the Atreidies soldeir wasn't drugged - a lovely present from his uncle haha.
10 to 1 odds on the guy with the net 😂😂 9:25
lol Chris you totally read my mind. Not sure I would watch all of these but some I really would!
love your videos man thank you and God bless.❤️✝️
I watched the Peter Ustinov commentary on the 1951 epic "Quio Vadis". He played Nero and they went to town on having Christians in ther arena and filmed in Italy. He highlighted a problem that people never think about. He said when they opened the gates to let the lions out , they rarely moved. The filmmakers had fed the lions and now the animals just wanted a siesta. So they would lie down on the sand and doze, because even they realised that nobody should exert themselves in hte midday heat. They had to edit very creatilvely to get the footage.
Commodus is an interesting case as he is credited with 735 victories,. we assume any ;mano a mano fighss were rigged. to portect the Emperor That is supposition based on him not having a delusional belfief in his own abillity. This is the man who decided he was a reincarntaion of Hercules and liked to walk around in a lionskin to prove the fact. I suggest that making assumptions on a core ratinal sanity and wish to survive is a bit of a coin toss here.
I've been to italy, and seen the colloseum, at that point while looking over the rafters into that ruined arena I really wished I could have seen some of these spectacles.
Its worthwhile to keep in mind that Domitian was hated by the senate, and since they were the ones with the wealth and time to write history if they didn't like an emperor that would reflect in the sources used by scholars today. The primary reason they didn't like Domitian was that he was an autocrat that had seen the senate flip flop in their loyalty at the drop of the hat during the year of the four emperors. This convinced him that the old rich windbags in the senate really wasn't worth much so he just ignored them, which naturally annoyed them to no end because other emperors (or at the time first citizens) had play acted with them to avoid trampling on their extremely fragile egos
I have to be honest, if I could travel back to ancient Rome, I would wanna see some of these matches play out in the colosseum. Especially the one's where they actually recreate an environment, filling it with water or plant life
I love VHS ON civil war topics but seeing’s him in Roman core is awesome
You should do a video on Gregory MacGregors life. Absolutely insane story. Love your content!
19:44 I've always been interested
Seeing the setup of some of these (the naval battles, wild animal hunts, how they selected gladiator classes, etc.) would be more interesting to me than the actual battle.
Your question about wanting to see the fights what I'm curious about most is naval battles just to see how they manage to fill arena with water bringing all ships and chaos begins and man vs predators
Thanks for accepting my recommendation! 😁
Boooo! I wanted him to react that video of the little monkey getting hurt on the monkey bars
Elephants typically would win against rhinos or even hippos. Hippos in the wild actually give elephants the right of way most of the time. The size difference between them is much larger than people realize, and male elephants in musth (their mating condition essentially) are some of the most unpredictable and violent animals in existence.
Just recently discovered this channel and love it. Thanks for added tons of context to videos you react to. If you are interested in watching The Fat Electrician I’d recommend the video “American’s Freedom Fighter Lewis Millet.” Commander of battle of hill 180 (Bayonet Hill) in Korea. Keep up the good work.
If you've ever been interested about winter war / continuation war, there is a video by Puolustusvoimat (Finnish defense force) about Veteraanien perintö (The legacy of veterans). Super interesting video about the Finnish - Soviet wars during WW2 as been told by the veterans that fought for Finland
Joe Rogan would have loved to watch them bear fights.
Would love to see you talk more about Dan Carlin! Not sure how a reaction would go but his stuff is great, especially Blueprint for Armageddon
It would actually be really interesting to see different compinations of people fight against each other.
Now I have an interest in whether or not there was ancient Roman tailgating outside the arenas before the Games got underway...and what traditions there might have been.
This is more in my wheelhouse. Awesome video
I definitely would have like to have seen that but going back to an earlier remark about gore in movies, etc., my mind went straight to Jurassic Park - "Clever girl" 19:50
A really interesting video would be on the battle of Caransebes, when the Austrian army attacked itself 😅
Regarding your social experiment, I am really curious to see what the naval battles in the Colosseum looked like. It sounds like such a crazy idea.
Just watched this yesterday.
I'd like to see both the wild hunts, and then the random animal duels, like, how would each animal react and fight each other in that environment?
He who survives is not the strongest nor the fastest but is the one who can adapt the quickest... 7:08
Damn, I remember a time when 500K subs was the average huge sub count. Now 500K is the new 100K.
I would also like if they flooded the colosseum today so they could do mock naval battles.
Listen with me... do you hear them?
The voices, the cries, the shrieks. Some do indeed sound like spoken words, but none are comprehensible, none even tangible, for this is not the speech of man.
But you know the words, you know them in your bones, like you know night from day.
"Napoleon's Marshals"
"Napoleon's Marshals, Chris"
You may ignore them now, but that won't help you. THEY are relentless and they come at you like vengeful beasts, and their horrible voices never cease to sing those same cursed verses-even when they are banished to some bleak bottomless pit, even when they are no longer human.
Napoleon's Marshals, Chris, Napoleon's Marshals.

After seeing Eddie Hall fight two small guys in a MMA match, I can understand the appeal of Gladiator matches.
I mean MMA is essentially just modern day gladiator matches. probably the closest we can get to the real thing without starting to use weapons. Mainstream that is, there's a lot of underground illegal fights going on that definetely has weapons
I think the naval battles would be by far the most impressive thing to go to!!
Oh I would watch that, I would like to see all of the historical events live and in colour. Though gladiator battles or animal hunts in an arena might be a one and done (and puked) for me.
Definitely the animal hunts would be cool to see
As I said in the original video's comments, it's helluva better than using taxpayer money to keep the hopeless cases in prison for life. Especially these days since prisons look more like hotels than anything resembling a punishment. Instead, you could actually make money to fund the police and justice system from the revenue of those fights, instead of being a useless money sink.
It's not even a heartless thing, it's just pragmatic.
I always love seeing you react to Roman History, Chris. Quick question: are you familiar with the TH-camr Lindybeige?
Can’t wait for the stream tonight!
The elephant grabbing a spear and the naval battles
I would’ve watched almost all of these 😂
Why yes. I so would go to the Colosseum to watch the games.
One factor to consider; Lions fight constantly in the wild while tigers are generally solitary.
I mean how can you not be a little curious about the results of some of these fights lol
I feel like number 10 could be quite reliably won if you just did the patented "Blade Tornado" technique
As a kid, I remember hearing of an account when the Romans had a beast fight "battle royale" to determine the official "King of Beasts". The contestants were a leopard, a lion, a tiger and a bear. According to the account, the felines immediately attacked each other, but the bear stayed out of the initial clash. Unsurprisingly, the tiger decisively won the "cat fight" and immediately went after the bear. The bear was able to defeat the tiger (albeit taking severe injuries in the process), much to the displeasure of the audience. To pacify the crowd, the organizer of the games then brought in a wild horse, which was able to finish off the bear. It seems that the title of "King of Beasts" remained vacant that day, as under ordinary circumstances a wild horse would lose badly to any of the initial contestants, with the possible exception of the leopard...
Mismatches at the Coliseum were the precursor to the current Jake Paul circus. In all seriousness, Vespasian was a fantastic emperor. He actually fell asleep during one of Nero' performances 😂
I do not like Jake Paul, but mismatches in modern sport are even more lol. Boxing football basketball, olympic in general XY athletic
Where'd you get that story from? I didn't look very hard but I didn't find it on the internet?
@@MainMan10 Adrian Gokdsworthy wrote about it in one of his books
@sometingwong2733 you're not wrong my friend. Lol
And also Vespasian in some dark way had a very interesting humor (especially if one of his last sentences was real).
Would love to see you do a reaction to history bombs! ww1 and 2 videos are probably my favorite, its more of a rapid fire cover of the entire war but all done in one take
Animal v man would be a sick fight to see
I''l bet they never used...Draftius Rex! Also, Rome's favorite commentator was Joeanius Roganius. He worked for Danius Whiteacus.
i probably would have gone to watch some of it. not sure how well id have stomached it. i wouldnt have argued against it ending though either.
We need a film series that pits various Kaiju against each other in a mountain sized Collesium don’t we?
The animal match ups would have been cool to watch. Especially before the internet and modern travel. Those animals would have been truly exotic.
Elephants actually kill Rhinos in the wild quite often. People have to step in sometimes to keep them separate. Unfortunately, Rhinos have poor eyesight and have a tendency to charge first and investigate later. While a Rhinos could stab an Elephant, the Elephant has a strong trunk, and about 4 times the Rhinos weight
Honestly I’d probably watch most of the events listed at least once.
Dwarf V. Labrador is something I’d pay to see today.
Would have loved to see coliseum fights irl. Nowadays all we got is foot ball and they changing out the kickoff because these players that make millions of dollars might get hurt during them. We used to be a decent country bring back the og kickoff and onside kicks on god
May i suggest you react to a video called The bosnian anexation crisis by sir manatee, its rarely talked about but that anexation almost led to world war earlier than it happened
Gladitorial fights were like pro wrestling and rigged. Can't stress enough, look at records of how long fights last and how few of them, who were trained died. Masks and bells were designed so they could call the match to each other without the audience reading their lips
Since i found this out i cant get the picture of spartacus jumping out of a coffin in the colosseum like the undertaker out of my head
Bluejay’s Olympic Marathon video should be next 😊
Lions Tigers bears oh my😅
check out some of townsends videos..:: coninal american history through food and he also cooks it the way they did during the time period using the methods described in the cook books
Romans were the real pokémon masters
Yes, hippos are amongst the most dangerous animals in Africa. While herbivores, hippos are big and highly territorial.
I know you seem to not be following the campaign of ceaser from historia civilis, but i think maybe getting into the story of octavian and anthony which builds from ceasers death by him might be a good way to get back to it, and i would love to hear your take on his portrayal of Agrippa.
That lion vs tiger has me doubting. The only lion l can imagine killing a tiger is the Barbery lion. The biggest lion to ever exist it's extinct unfortunately.
It's definitely wrong, he corrected himself in the comments.
@@VloggingThroughHistory Chris please react to epic history's marengo

Hey Chris, when you get a chance, you should really take a look at Kings and Generals new video about the Real Reason for the American Civil War.
It's only 4 days old, but it's phenomenal and I think you'll really like the approach they take to the topic.
Hey if you can I just finished watching Extra History Hypatia of Alexandra videos so I thought it’d be cool for you to react to more women in history.
they should make an assassins creed game set in ancient rome, would be cool
VTH I would love for you to react to Extra History Genghis Khan or Siege of Vienna. Hiawatha is a good one too.
I thought also that the lion wins. He is weaker, but has a mane as protection.
So comodos in maximus is perfectly played he was a coward
Man I would be a shit gladiator as I picked the loser each time.
I still however thing the Secutor has the advantage though, as with a shield it is so much easier to get past the trident to a distance where it is useless and cut him down
I'd like to see a naval battle. Just the ability to flood it and drain it so quickly is a marvel. Really would have been interesting to see what would have happened if they stuck around. (I know 1453) but I feel as if after the west fell a lot of the technological improvements stopped
Hay dude love your content been watching for a while now you should check out history matters new video on the USA and USSR I think it'd be a cool reaction!
