      @@genewebb2837 NOPE at 4.20 as Chelseacharger rightly states this is Camilla Dahlin of tribute band 'Waterloo'. This video was filmed 17th/18th April 1978 at the same time as videos for 'Eagle' (the next single from ABBA - The Album) and 'One Man One Woman' and Agnetha and Bjorn's son Chritian would have been less than a year old (Born 4th December 1977).

    I saw this in the news today:
    Abba's greatest hits compilation Gold has become the first record to spend 1,000 weeks in the UK's album chart.
    Released in 1992, the record is the second biggest-seller of all time in the UK with sales of 5.61 million, only behind Queen's Greatest Hits.
    Featuring the Swedish band's biggest songs Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia and Waterloo, it has now spent a total of 19 years and 12 weeks in the top 100.
    "Not bad for four old turnips," joked Benny Andersson on hearing the news.

    "Thank you for the music"
    has many interesting details
    There is a video report to Björn and Benny at 1976 Christmas time
    there the reporter asks them if they have a preview of a song
    and there they play the melody (without lyrics) of the future "Thank you for the music"
    how several already said
    "Thank you for the music"
    is the first song of the mini musical that ABBA performed on their 1977 Tour of Europe and Australia
    there it has other lyrics, which even mention 'John and Paul' (The Beatles) and Agnetha sings in Doris Day style
    The song is at the end of "ABBA The Movie" and is part of "ABBA The Album" with the version you did here and also with the Doris Day version.
    Thank you for the music
    it's a very special song for Agnetha
    she just came back from Australia shortly after she got pregnant with her second child
    When it was time to record it, she was in a very advanced stage of pregnancy, and to sing it she had to do it in a more forced position
    When you see her in each presentation, Agnetha's face seems to transform with joy when interpreting "Thank you for the music": her gestures, her looks and her pouting are unmissable
    "Thank you for the music"
    it was used as the last number of a TV presentation, as this video
    It's like an ABBA hymn and classic
    wasn't a single, but should have been the 3rd single of ABBA The Album
    After the success of "Chiquitita" in Spanish-speaking countries, ABBA also recorded it in Spanish and it was a great success in my country Argentina.
    And the ABBA album in Spanish language was called just like that
    "Gracias por la música"
    In my personal opinion
    "Thank you for the music"
    is in my top 5
    for good lyrics, beautiful melody and greatest interpretation by a carismatic Agnetha
    and it is the last live performance of ABBA, in that section sung almost 'a cappella' at the end of the last interview of ABBA in 1982

    • @tuijakarttunen9164
      @tuijakarttunen9164 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes. Agnetha told in an interview that she had to sing the recording of these vocals almost lying down and doctor told her not to push at all.

    Thank you so much for do this lovely song
    "Thank you for the music"
    is a beautiful song
    beautiful is the exactly word to all:
    melody, instruments, lyrics, harmonies, and specialy the piano and the lead voice by Agnetha
    ABBA play this song many times to the end of TV shows;
    and was the last song that ABBA perform live 'a capella' in a TV interview at the end of 1982

  • @dreasbn
    @dreasbn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Aside from Dancing Queen and The Winner Takes It All this is one of their signature songs for sure. In many polls it ranks high. Only ABBA managed to call an album track a signature song aside their constant single releases… this one is so very very much ABBA

    • @dreasbn
      @dreasbn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      and by the relative high number of different tv performances the inclusion on abba gold you can the exceptional meaning of the song within the repertoire and not being a regular single release… for me it’s not a farewell or closing song but more an essence „this is what we stand for“ song. The 1983 single release in some territories was a lame try to promote a love songs compilation after ABBA split. It was not their decision to release it. It was the b side of the 1978 Eagle single and performed often between 1977 and 1982..

    This song is fantastic and truly timeless. As you say Dereck, it's a perfect sing along-song. And with time, it has become a standard song for many choirs to sing. I've sang this song several times in a couple of different arrangements for choirs and it's a song that everyone knows... at least in Sweden where I'm from :) ABBA always

    It's a song that brings joy and thanks to one of the most meaningful things in the lives of people the world over throughout all of history. More about the feel and simplicity here, with gorgeous lyrics and melody plus harminisation, than complicated instrumentation. Brings out tears of joy for my own love of music and dance and living.
    First released on their 1977 album "The Album".

    The track was belatedly released as a single A-side in a handful of countries in 1983/1984 with the purpose to promote compilation albums put together by local record companies, due to lack of new ABBA material. Most of these compilations had a 'love' theme with titles such as 'From ABBA With Love', 'I Love ABBA' and 'Thank You For The Music (A Collection Of Love Songs)'.
    ABBA had already disbanded by then (or gone on a silent break) so they obviously didn't promote the single in any way. They were busy with their own projects (solo albums for the girls and the 'Chess' musical for the boys). So it was not surprising the single didn't chart well. By then it was already a six-year-old album track. Also it had already been released in a number of countries as the B-side to the 'Eagle' single in 1978, and as such was even considered as a double A-side.
    Although it was never a major chart hit anywhere, the song has endured as one of ABBA's most well-known signature songs.

    "Thank You For The Music" was the 7th (of 9) songs on 1977's 'The Album' which is probably Abba's best. It's the first of 3 songs that were a mini-musical to close out the album. 'Eagle', 'Move On' and the rock opera standout 'Hole In Your Soul' are exceptional compositions as are the two mega hits "Take A Chance On Me" and "The Name Of The Game". Thank You For The Music was only released as a single in 1983 after the band had unofficially broken up, 6 years after the original release of 'The Album', and most of their fans were already familiar with it.

    Interesting you spotted the ‘saddnes ‘ in the song. It’s often taken out of context from the original 1977 Girl With The Golden Hair Musical which is really melancholy and tragic. Also it was the last song they sang together in 1982 and wasn’t released as a single in the UK until 1983 as their final release for the fans after they ‘split ‘ So it’s sad on a few levels for us

    • @gregorygant4242

      I found a lot of ABBA'S songs were sad.
      SOS, Knowing Me Knowing You, were sad songs with a cheerful melody and that contrast made them masterpieces IMHO.
      I used to be a kid and when I listened to those songs they made me so sad.
      Now I'm a grown man ,but when I listen to those two songs I still ball my eyes out ,even after so many years!

    What makes this song special to me is the warmth and sincerity in Agnetha's voice.
    Especially:"
    *What a joy, what a life, what a chance*
    Funny you mentioned departure.
    This song was part of a mini musical called 'The Girl With The Golden Hair.'
    EDIT: Oops, that will teach me commenting before having fully watched the video.
    I loved ABBA back in the 1970s, when I was as young as the kids in that crowd.
    My parents first loved ABBA and that is how I came to know their art.
    Then, as I grew into a teen, it was 'not done' to like ABBA, it was just not cool.
    Fortunately, with every new generation, there has been new found appreciation of this, the greatest pop group ever.

    You never go wrong with ABBA. This was a TV show not a tour. I think the blonde girl you saw grew up to be a tribute singer for ABBA, I am not 100% sure but I was told. The song is lovely. It suits Agnetha's voice and Frida's harmonies are wonderful as is the arrangement. Since it is part of the mini musical they did on stage it is not in its full context but I think the sentiments are wonderful. What would life be without a song or a dance? Check out "Thank you for the music" live version (in Japan with orchestra) and another one at Wembley. Great performances. Also there is interesting alternate version "Thank you for the music" (Doris Day version) with slightly different vocal delivery and arrangement. "Thank you for the music" is one of the ABBA's most beloved songs. It's their classic. Signature song with intriguing lyrics in verses and wonderful melody. Anthemic-like.
    It wasnt big hit because they didn't release it as a single in 1977. But it has become a hit during their concerts at that time. And in 1983 (when they released it as a single) interest for ABBA has already dropped. You can also check out 4th song from musical "Girl with a golden hair" - "Get on carousel". Great unreleased song. A lot of energy. Very rock.

    You should do a reaction of their earlier version of the song, called "Thank you for the Music (Doris Day)". Same melody but sung in a completely different style. Agnetha's voice is so soothing in that version, and shows how versatile she was as a singer. The song is now a part of ABBA - The Album as a bonus cut & is a great listen.

    Hey Dereck! "Thank You For The Music" to me should be a closer before an encore. After they close out their show, they would come back out on stage & sing "The Way Old Friends Do". I've never seen an ABBA concert (Always wanted to!) so I can only hope they did it this way.

    Hey dude I found your channel a couple days ago, I must say as a french person it’s really cool watching someone from another continent reacting to french pop songs, plus I really like 60s 70s 80s french songs and I have a few suggestions of songs for you that I don’t think you’ve reacted to:
    -“Allumer le feu", Johnny Hallyday
    -"J’aime regarder les filles", Patrick Coutin
    -"Amoureux solitaires", Lio
    -"Joe le taxi", Vanessa Paradis
    -"Ou sont les femmes", Patrick juvet
    -"Les divas du dancing", Philippe Cataldo
    -"Disparue", Jean-Pierre Mader
    -"Coeur de loup", Philippe Lafontaine
    -"Il est libre Max", Hervé Cristiani (one of the chillest song ever)
    -"A Bailar Calypso", Elli Medeiros
    -"Elle est d’ailleurs", Pierre Bachelot
    -"Les mots bleus", Christophe
    -"Évidemment", France Gall
    -"Et si tu n’existais pas", Joe Dassin
    -"Femmes je vous aime", Julien Clerc
    -"Encore et encore", Francis Cabrel
    -"Chante la vie", Michel Fugain
    -"Comme d’habitude", Claude François
    And a personal favorite (not a french song) "Bongo Cha Cha Cha", Caterina Valente
    I realize it’s more than a few but you know, if you wants some more suggestions just let me know.

    • @wayne_twentyfive

      Well, at least he still gave it his Dereck Reacts Approval at 9.15 .. But in all honesty, by ABBA's phenomenal standards, I too think it is pretty much just an OK song for them .. Of course I like it, just as I do with nearly all their songs .. But I think it's regarded as a classic more for it's heartfelt meaning than for the actual musicality of it .. Just my thoughts .. Cheers, Wayne

    • @robertwill23
      @robertwill23 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wayne_twentyfive musically it's great song, imho. it's one of the best examples of anthemic-like song. Melody is wonderful and very memorable and that's what is about. Intriguing lyrics in verses. Piano lines are great. Only song from mini-musical that was able to live on its own. Song can't become favorite among fans just because for heartfelt meaning - you need great music (melody) that would frame and express it.

    • @wayne_twentyfive
      @wayne_twentyfive 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertwill23 Fair enough .. We all have our own personal favourites among ABBA's wide and wonderful repertoire .. You make some very valid points, including it's anthemic qualities .. but this song is just not up there with my faves from them .. Still very listenable though .. Cheers, Wayne

    The only reason it wasn’t a big hit in ‘83 actually, had nothing to do with their splitting - or their falling popularity; it was simply a very ‘old song’, and way back in ‘77, it was in great demand in our shops (customers would constantly try to order it) - but nobody could get it - it wasn’t available as a Single as you say, and so of course could not chart... I believe, judging by the demand for it at the time, it would have been a Number One back then! ABBA’s only misjudgement in a lack of release? (probably)
