HA...i had one of those and did some photo editing with Lightroom on this thing when i was travelling. It took forever and was a pain to work on, but that thing was light and cheap and no one wanted to steal it.
I found one of these in pretty good shape at a thrift store for $10 bucks, even had the charger. The screen is still in excellent shape surprisingly. I have an old 500GB SSD laying around and I'm going to upgrade the ram, which costs practically nothing now, and turn it into a retro rts machine. Should be pretty fun.
I love this little thing. The typing experience and form factor was great for me. Only drawback was the heavy weight and power. It could play sims 1 on overclock mode and I finished chrono trigger on it. It could even play The Longest Journey. Such a cozy device.
I loved (I still have) my 901. The modding scene was mad at the time too for netbooks, touchscreens, internal usb hubs, extra ssds, ripping out half the case to fit a mechanical hdd inside, dvb tuners, gps and hackintosh (pretty sure the dell mini was the shit for this). I didn’t have the technical skills then but lusted over forums, maybe someday I’ll pimp mine up if parts are still around
Definitely these netbooks were much more luggable, but those UMPC handhelds feel much more convenient to pickup and use to me for virtually the same underpowered experience. Too bad they were rather shortlived, those things were perfect for notetaking during seminars
I had an EEE, imported from the UK, the basic 701 model. It had Linux on it, I used it for school, but I also had EVE Online running on it. I would login to EVE from school using my phone connection, that was quite wild in 2007.

Had the Asus Eee PC 1005HA for a while (Atom N280, 2 GB, 160 GB 5400 RPM HDD) in between 2020 and 2022. You heard that right - 2020s and an old Atom. It lagged with Windows 7 and Debian under web browser loads, and lagged in 3D Aero in Windows 7 of all things.
I had one back in 2007-2008. It was slow, but could surprise the heck out of you. I actually loaded WoW on mine and was playing Wrath of the Lich King with little issue.
If you want a Windows OS outside of XP on it you could go with Tiny10 or even though it's out of support Windows 8.1, I've noticed it runs better on these old Atom netbooks likely because it was designed with things like low end Celeron/Atom tablets in mind
I have the 10somethingsomething eeepc. Installed Mint (xfce) when Win7 got too sluggish. Most recently used it play music on air that the station didn't have.
I used to play modded Minecraft Skyblock on one of those because normal Minecraft was to much to handle. Still remember the struggle because starting up Minecraft took 30 minutes. Once you were in it was fine tho, because it had like 100 blocks it had to render.
I had a version of this laptop with a Celeron and man, i used to play so many games in that thing, gta san andreas, trackmania united, quake 3, etc, and yes, all those games runs at very low fps, but when i was a kid i dont care about that at all, nowadays we are more careful about run games with 1000 fps and super ultra rtx graphics than actually play the games
Could you try installing Windows 11 on that laptop and also consider adding an SSD or upgrading the RAM? It could greatly improve the performance of the laptop, which I actually had as a child back in 2008.
most of these can only support up to 2gb ram sadly ssd would help but since this runs a crappy Intel Atom N270 that is about as good as a pentium 3 mobile chip there is only so much you can do installing modded gma drivers can help

That Intel Atom allowed me to broadcast on a SHOUTcast radio, talk to friends on Skype, play Habbo Hotel and open Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 where I learned HTML 😂 I really did a lot of things on that Eee PC. I broke my PC one day when I decided to clean the keyboard with a wet cloth... I sent it to the official ASUS technical service and they never returned my netbook 😅 to this day, I think what the fuck happened? I even got an email from Asus saying they fixed the netbook and sent it back to me, but they never provided me with the tracking code and my parents bought me a Tablet xD

I had MSI u90x back then, and got broken eeePC later. I did fix it and it still works fine 🙂 I also have put SATA SSD in it and added some RAM. But now it's obsolete because of the CPU which is 32 bit only😢. I also had DELL XPS m1210 back in 2007, and it had 32bit CPU. Some years ago through the magic of AliExpress I got a 64bit CPU for less than a dollar for my DELL and it works fine with latest Linux mint now :-)

For CPU 32bits I use Lubuntu in my EEEPC 280N 2Gb Ram, works fine. You can try it.
