I've heard this story about a decade ago, was kinda surprised to see you covered this one. I can totally understand Mami Rose motive to protect his daughter, but yeah they shouldn't have executed Purwanto's entire family. But please keep in mind that all of this happened during the Suharto's New Order era, so there's a possibility that if Purwanto did the same thing to Mami Rose' family, he most likely wouldn't be persecuted and the case would never surfaces to the public. There are no good guys here. Purwanto was such a scumbag, he did come off as somebody who was gonna abuse his position of power to exploit Mami Rose. There’s so much disgustingness in Purwanto’s conduct. But, with that being said, Mami Rose’s family was also despicable, massacring the whole family was so heartless, so many innocent souls that became collateral damage. It’s really unfortunate that a business, and business partners, would be the downfall of these 2 families. And I’m gonna say it, I’m not against Sex Work. I don’t judge. As long as no children were being harmed
Let’s not forget that Mami Rose was enlisting many teen girls for sex work (who knows how many, and how young they were), eventhough she didn’t want the same for her own daughter. She’s actually more evil than the guy she killed since she literally murdered an entire family. You know that in South East Asia sex workers start as early as 13 or 14? It’s against Indonesian law (just as brothels are illegal), but they do it anyway. In Thailand it’s even younger, literally pre-pubescent children.
Not against sex work either, but pimps are pimps. Sex work shouldnt be a problem if thats what the sex workers are choosing to do... Pimps aint really about that.
The first kill could be seen as justice, considering his position, true justice would never be granted, but everything after that was just plain cold murder.
She was still a madam at the end of the day which doesn't make her a Saint however the fact that the courts overlooked an ARMYMAN delving into the business of trafficking women and also making that sickening demand from Mami Rose and even then, she and her accomplices were given the death sentence REALLY does show the true intentions of these judges. Like she could've atleast be rehabilitated given that she delved into the business out of desperation while an armyman despite having everything got into the business of trafficking but no, clearly the priorities of the courts remain otherwise. And it's not like I'm unaware of the judicial system in Indonesia, I have an Indonesian bestie and I'm aware that Sharia law still prevails. I'm still baffled by the fact that a country that harshly admonishes celebrities when their seggs tapes get leaked w/o their permission but a military man threatens a madam and nothing is done about it. This case to me is a textbook example of how the justice system upholds patriarchy by protecting abusers. Its fucked up.
A mother can go to any length to protect her kids and family. Never mess with a mother. She was pushed to the wall. This is not to commend her actions but if that man had not obsessed over her daughter this would never have happened. She tolerated the insult, the beating and the humiliation he gave her but the moment he crossed the line by lusting over her daughter, that was the last straw that broke the camel's back.
I heard about this story from my father who worked as a taxi driver in Surabaya around the time of incident, and for what it's worth some of his passengers during the night were those people who wanted to go to Dolly alley. Pretty tragic about what happened, and tbh i'd feel less sorry about the murder if they only took Purwanto out, not his pregnant wife and innocent children as well. Now Dolly alley has long been closed by Surabaya mayor at the time, Tri Rismaharini. Now she's running for East Java gubernatorial election this year. So maybe you can wish her luck. Because in my opinion there's nothing more empowering for women than fighting off arguably one of the most exploitative and harmful businesses for women that is prostitution
She sold other people's daughters but was so offended by her own daughter facing the same fate .None of them were perfect .Its understandable that she wanted to protect her daughter but she should have left his kids and wife alone

The issue was he was a high figure likely respected for serving his nation while Mami Rose wouldn't be considered dignified even though the man himself was a customer of hers. But the question is would they have helped her knowing her past and livelihood?
