अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ आंदोलन की पहली चिंगारी क्रांतिधरा मेरठ से फूटी। 10 मई 1857 को मेरठ में सबसे पहले अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ विद्रोह हुआ। मेरठ को अंग्रेज सबसे सुरक्षित छावनी मानते थे, उन्हें इस बात का बिलकुल अहसास नहीं था कि विद्रोह यहीं से होगा। 10 मई 1857 की सुबह अंग्रेज अफसरों के यहां कोई हिंदुस्तानी काम करने नहीं गया। दोपहर तक सूचना फैल गई कि विद्रोह होने वाला है। शाम होते होते विद्रोह के स्वर तेज हो गए। इसके बाद अंग्रेजों पर हमला बोल दिया गया।

In India, it has been viewed quite differently. The events of 1857 have been considered the first outbreak of an independence movement against British rule.
