  • From an old 8mm home movie of Allentown along Hamilton Street. Includes the outside of the Hess Brothers Building, Trexler Funeral Home, Sears, the Monument and a very dark Hamilton Street night time Christmas view.

I was born in March 1961; It's growing increasingly difficult for me to watch these aged memory-provoking films; they make me want to return to those great old times far too much!

Wow man.. What the fuck happen to Allentown... I'm 13 and I lived here my whole life... Why can't things go back to the way they were... It looked so peaceful now it looks like everyone has gone insane and all I smell is weed when I go take walks in the neighborhoods.. And empty beer cans and just... Destroyed stuff.. Man I would of loved 60s the cars were so nice.. The Christmas toy store shocked me because we don't have that any more, the Christmas theme shocked me too it reminded me of peace and a place where everyone loves each other.. Now Allentown went to hell and there's no way bringing it back..

All i have is the great memories of how Allentown once was. When i was small,id see Pip the mouse show at hess department store each Christmas.Everything was decorated so beautiful. Those days are long gone. When hess department store closed, that was the end of a era.It hurt to watch them knock the hess building down.Ur right, Allentown went to hell. Now they put up new buildings and apartments that poor people cant aford. They dont care, the landlords raise the rent so all the people on poverty cant aford to live here anymore. Most of the people i grew up in Allentown now are either dead or moved out of Allentown.Sad all thats left is the history of Allentown.

I'm sorry to read what you wrote, I feel bad for you. You sound like the type of person that would have really appreciated how great Allentown was. I grew up there in the 50's and 60's, lived on Liberty St between 4th and 5th. Now I wouldn't go near my old neighborhood. Your comment really touched my heart. I feel bad for all the kids that can't experience how nice the city was. It's very sad that it has turned out to be such a mess and yes, I doubt there's a way to bring it back. Life isn't the same in the US in most cities the way it was back then. I hope you're well.

When all the large employers/companies/factories left, thousands of employees/families left and that’s who supported these businesses/stores in the 60s

also,I, remember the center city statue getting decorated for Christmas each year.. We used to drive downtown at night to see it lit up....BACK THEN it was an "attraction" to see....also PP&L was right near there and was the tallest building in Allentown for a very long time.. They used to change their lights at Christmas time to green and red on top of their building it was also cool to see as a child.

Wonderful memories. My first job was at the Household Finance Company above Whelans Drug Store by the monument. I loved working downtown and shopping on my lunch hour at Hess's. I used to grab a quick lunch at the five and ten.

Once a great working class city , with multiplicity. Now its a drunken, drug infested rats nest . I remember Hess department store and the overall city being a nice town of hard working people . Once the mall on RT 22 came to Whitehall and the stores moved to the Mall good by downtown.

Allentown I was just told to move out to Allentown because I believed something by our families house of Kassel they don't know where they are. I tried to explain to her that has to stay in with them they announced dortchenbeildes family with Naomi Wilde's family with our Hess ksdel family are permitted now to return by Case management. She claims she doesn't remember like Hess of Allentown's Roy show if personnel's wrong by baby in toyland
