This group were one of the main groups on rotation in my High School mental soundtrack and Aiwa Super Bass walkman. Timeless goodies I still own on CD! Thank you for highlighting these talented guys.
This album, with ATCQ's debut, Jungle Brothers, Leaders of the New, and PE's Fear of a Black Planet were the soundtrack of my Freshmen year in college, roadtrips, all night study sessions and group talks! '89/'90- what a year in Hip Hop!!!
I actually listened to it during one of the only two times I took acid circa 1989. I remember trying to listen to the stuff you where supposed to listen to (psychedelic rock), and I just couldn't handle it! I then suddenly remembered I had De La Soul's "3 Feet High and Rising" which I hadn't really listened to yet, and putting that on really put me in a good place.
To this day I still rock these jams.. I had added them to my playlists from other folks who had them listed sporadically. The 3 feet high album is such a part of my teen years, that I can't imagine not having heard these great jams. They are iconic in their own right, then mixed with the native tongue teams have shaped my musical tastes and thought process about "not being cool because you're different". I will always be grateful for them and their contributions to music.
First time seeing your videos, so so well done, so in depth, light hearted, engaging, just superb. Instant follow. I’ve bought a coloured vinyl copy of 3 feet
And really, it’s about time. I remember I found the CD to this in a pawn shop for $0.50 back in 2015. It was my first time hearing it ever at age 25 and it changed everything for me. What an amazing album.
What a time to do a deep dive into De La Soul! Thanks to the channel I got interested in De La in the past month and now I can listen to all of it fairly easily!
What an awesome video!!! You broke great news at the end! Admittedly I'm more of a 96' rap introduction guy, but I'm also a history guy so I plan on catching up with all the old classics before my 40th (got 2 years). RIP Dave!
Seriously been waiting on a vid from you all day about De La and you didn’t disappoint!! I also went ahead and preordered 3 Feet High, De La Soul is Dead and Stakes is High on vinyl (already had Buhloone Mindstate). Can’t express how happy I am today!
3 Feet High and Rising was THE first record I ever owned. It was given to me by my mother a few years ago who got it when she was a teenager in 1989 in the UK. I have it framed and on my wall, its been there for a long time and it will stay there. It holds a very special place in my heart and I am so happy a newer generation are now being introduced to their music. RIP Dave!!!
And let's appreciate Buhloone Mindstate! Dropped during a pivotal moment in hip hop back in '93 and was sadly overlooked. It's truly a masterpiece -- as the entire catalog. THANK YOU DAVE and Long Live De La!!!
Honestly, I was one of those idiots who wasn't initially impressed by Buhloon Mindstate. That summer we were spoiled by so many dope albums coming out, NOT just hit singles...COMPLETE DOPE ALBUMS!! Wu-Tang debut, Nas debut, Tribe's Midnight Marauders, BDP...can you blame me for not noticing De La that summer? Bittersweet memories.
I commend you for making this content. So needed as HipHop has lost its history from this era. Lord Finesse, Big L, ATCQ, Hieroglyphics, Cellar Dwellers, Pharcyde , Souls of Mischief, Boogiemonsters, LOTUG, Sir Mennelik…just to name a few from the backpack and Afro centric era.
RIP Dave, met him when I was a kid, was super nice and good vibes...also amazing lyricist as well. DeLa is legendary, one of the pioneers and one of the first hiphop groups I ever started listening to
Excellent presentation on one of my favorite groups in hip hop. 3 Feet High And Rising meant the world to me as a teen, and still has a special place in my heart as a 40+ adult. De La was ahead of their time, and brought a different energy to hip hop. Appreciate your channel and all of your incredible content. Rest In Power Dave! #DeLaSoul4Ever
It shouldn't come as a surprise that this channel honoured this momentous day. 3 feet high & rising is fun, but albums 2-6 are some of my favourites. This has been Spotify's biggest blind spot since I signed up
Thank you for making this video. As I was descending into narcotics use, this album came out. The playfulness, creativity and positivity was a literal lifeline. My abuse only lasted a couple years, but these 3 beautiful souls kept me from drowning. If A Tribe Called Quest's A Low End Theory is the Sgt. Pepper of hip hop, then 3 Feet High and Rising is Pet Sounds. For those that don't know, The Beach Boys Pet Sounds inspired The Beatles to make Sgt. Pepper. God bless you and De La Soul.
I bought the album on tape and played it to death , literally the tape snapped, finally I’ll be able to replace a very important part of my music library back with loads of those sampled music giants like Steele Dan etc , thank you for the video it’s made an old man very happy ❤
Thank you for all the effort that goes into your videos. I'm a 50yr old BBoy from the UK who turned his love of DJing and Graf into a career. I've never stopped listening to the old school and I love your videos - because you love this stuff too. Your detail, energy and reverence of the material is so enjoyable. A big thanks.
Absolutely one of the best! Been a fan since 3 Feet High and Rising first dropped. Excellent historical context about De La being a total counterpoint to NWA and what was happening on the West Coast. There’s no better 2nd or 3rd album in an hip-hop artists discography than theirs. De La Soul is Dead is like the Empire Strikes Back to Star Wars. A bit darker and way more mature. If you haven’t listened to those first three albums, do yourself a favor and do so! I had the honor of seeing them live and they did give the stink eye to Me Myself and I. I did read an article that the new rerelease of 3 Feet is different from the original due to some lingering samples that could not be cleared. So if you ever come across an old pressing of the CD nab it! R.I.P Trugouy! Love your channel keep up the great work!
I was waiting for this since I was 18 when I discovered them and have had to TH-cam their albums except 2 and 3 which I had on CD for over 5 years now. I wish the new versions kept all the samples in the songs, and the mixing feels weird now, but those are minor complaints, I’m just happy we can all listen to them easily now and their legacy won’t be lost. Rip Dove and thank you for the inspiration and influence you gave so many of us.
from the recent NY Times article on the reissues: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Still, not everything could be cleared, or was worth the money to do so. The band rerecorded what it says are tiny elements - drumbeats, horn hits, vinyl scratches - and went back to some of the original analog equipment it used more than 30 years ago... One track on “3 Feet High” called “Cool Breeze On The Rocks” - a pastiche of more than 20 fragments in less than a minute by Public Enemy, Jefferson Starship, Afrika Bambaataa and others using the word “rock” - was too impractical to clear, so it has been “reimagined". Close listeners may notice other changes like the disappearance of an Eddie Murphy snippet from “The Magic Number.”
I did, in fact, openly weep happy tears for this video. This was a cautionary tale for musicians in generations to come. Glad to hear the music was finally given the right to see the light of day.
It’s such a great album. I waited so long to finally be able to hear the whole thing. (I didn’t have $50 to shell out for a cd but had heard the singles and loved them!) it was totally worth the wait…And the next 3 albums were just as excellent in their own right. Dave passing before he could see this big triumph is shocking and painful. He deserved to see all the love pouring out from new and old listeners. 🌸🌻🌼🌺
spotify's AI DJ actually played a song off 3 feet high and rising for me this morning on my way to school. if i hadn't been put onto that song, i wouldn't be watching this video. i'm gonna listen to the whole album on my way back home
I am SO fucking pumped they're on streaming finally. I've been ranting at all of my friends for years (the ones that didn't know about De La at least) about how this hugely influential piece of music history was just absent for most modern listeners. I know you could find stuff if you looked for it on TH-cam and the like, but it wasn't there to be stumbled upon like with streaming. And I can't even imagine how the rest of the group and people in their circle must feel with them arriving on streaming right after Dave's passing. He hopefully was at least aware that they'd finally be given back to the world. Besides the fact that they were together for so long, one of the most remarkable things about them was their growth as artists and men. I had a big long rant typed out but I'll spare everyone. Thanks for the work you're doing!
Great video as always! Thank you for this. IMO, De La and Tribe are the only hip hop groups that dropped three(!) classic albums back to back to back, right out the gate.
plug two deserved to see his creations through to a new audience. i hope my generation takes the amazing gift of these albums being readily available and makes music inspired by them that makes dave proud
Stunning album 3FHAR. Haven’t heard it in years, and whenever I go back to it, it’s always refreshing - great job breaking this album down with their background on sampling. Also didn’t realise how big the numbers were they did on this side at the time, more than Run-DMC.
FINALLY! I've been wanting to listen to 3 Feet High and Rising for the first time for AGES and have kept on checking to see if it was available on Spotify pretty frequently. Thank you for informing us, mate, much appreciated! Can't wait to properly get into De La Soul now I'm so happy!
I’ve been so mad, especially lately, that there’s literally no De La Soul on any music services. And honestly, I don’t even use streaming, but i recently got Apple Music for free. I use physical media, original versions at that, almost exclusively, but even that’s nearly impossible for their albums as you already touched on. I was lucky enough to score a copy of De La Soul Is Dead for $12 right before Trugoy passed, still sealed from 1991, but thats been it. When I had my 3-4 hours of free time at work to listen to some music today, I saw that it finally happened: 3 Feet High, as well as the others, had finally made it!! And at the perfect time, too. Thank you for making this video and spreading awareness of the real hip hop. We need more of this.
Thank you for this! I'm loving all the videos you are making. When I see a notification of a new video from you, it's an instant watch. Now let me get back to listening to 'Trying People' from AOI: Bionix on repeat...
yo - this father of 4 and 54 year old LOVED this video - the info - the pace - how did you write all this ? plus the graphics / overlays - fantastic - thx for the history lesson and the love of DE LA SOUL - FROM THE SOUL !
Another Super Terrific video and one that is Perfectly timed with their music openly getting back out into the world today!!!🙌🏼🎉👍🏼 The very first concert I saw in LA once I moved there from NC in the fall of 1996 was the Goodie Mob, De La Soul, and Fishbone at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip. Was an utterly unbelievable show that was FANTASTIC!! That show has always remained one of my personal most important and very favorite concerts of my life for a myriad of reasons. In turn, having made a career in music, I eventually saw De La multiple times having either shared concert bills with them or by watching my homies the Rhythm Roots All-Stars back then live years later. De La Soul is Absolutely one of the VERY BEST and MOST important groups in Hip-Hop, as well as all, music history (as you terrifically explained here in this video)!!! Thanks for this and all your other Great videos and R.I.P. Dave aka Trugoy the Dove❤️🙏🏻💔
Amazing work, love your content! There were many keys to unlocking these releases and as De La lover, I'm grateful for them all. One was DMG Clearances. Behind the scenes force of nature...made a lot of songs happen.
Great timing! I tried looking for their music on the Amazon music streaming app a month ago but couldn't find anything and now this video comes out and now I can finally hear their music that I grew up on🙏💪🏼
Great vid on this topic, I appreciate it. I actually heard 3 feet for the first time today and could tell it was groundbreaking at first listen. Folks in the hip hop community have been touting the re-release of De La's discography for a bit of time now, and I'm glad I heeded their recommendation. I'll continue to listen, as I know there will be more goodness from them I haven't experienced yet. Thanks again for the vid. ✌🏾
Good video! So glad their music is finally available for streaming. I had the 3 feet high and rising and De Soul is dead on tape back in the day. Haven't listened to those albums in a long time.
I was 17 when 3 feet came out. My brother had it on cassette and I remember listening to it over and over, it was so unique and strange at times but I couldn’t stop listening. Truly in the top 5 greatest hip hop albums EVER. RIP Dave.
ALSO... didn't know De La Soul wasn't on streaming! I literally started following along on Spotify when I realized you weren't playing any (I'm used to having to do that with YT "music essays"). Had no idea it was a blessing that I could do that (and I've def added more streams)! Again, thanks for the info!!
I am 45, so 3 Feet High and Rising came out at exactly the right time for me to get into it. And I did. Some throwaway tracks but mostly brilliant throughout. Hip Hop was generally a singles genre up until this album. The skits on 3 Feet gave it continuity and it felt like a concept album. Glad the 6 albums are available again. Frankly, the fact that it wasnt available for so long, makes it that much more special.
Oh m God!!!! I've been waiting for their discography to be released on spotify for years (especially for the Buhloone Mindstate) and knew about the troubles holding it back. This video announced its release for me, and heeeeeeelllll Yeeeeaaaahh, it's there!!! Happy happy happy!!! :)
I was 11 when this came out. I got a dubbed cassette from my friend's older brother and played that thing nonstop. It had a huge impact on my musical tastes, led me to all the other native tongues albums, and I honestly believe it influenced the person I am today.
I remember getting the 3 Feet High and Rising tape when it dropped and loved it. Classic album..I would play every single day. Of course Me Myself and I is just a jewel that will never be forgotten. I still listen to it. I also have De La Soul is Dead and enjoyed that tape as well…it’s sad all of the other stuff about their deal and music was going on…had no clue it was being held up like this… I use to look for these albums years later and wonder why I can’t find them… Also equally sad that Trugoy is not around to see their music library released…my heart broke at the news…I still don’t want to believe tho.. ❤️😩🙏🏽 But I’m so grateful for all the De La was giving us in entertainment…I will always be a fan.
Thanks to you I ran to Spotify and a hugh smile took over my face when I saw the classics are suddenly there. I was constantly annoyed i couldn't find any of their music in Spotify and had no idea why. I was mainly wanting for De La Soul is Dead, since I feel it held up better, but I'm glad I can finally listen anything out of them without the need to clean the dust off my cd player
Yessss this album was a true relic of my childhood! De las vibe, style and sound help create who i am today! Happy this has finally gotten a repress(bought two colorways haha) anddd is on streaming now!! GREAT VIDEO as always 👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾
as someone who’s only recently gotten into hip-hop I want to say thanks for making this video. De la Soul was one of those groups I remember people talking about them in the early 2000s late 1990s but I never got what all the hype was about until I heard ‘eye know’ on spotify yesterday. So happy that they released this album and happy I got the last vinyl copy at my record store today!
I was introduced to De La Soul by an old Co worker, he gave me a cd copy of "The Grind Date". I then looked on Spotify and was so upset that de la soul wasn't represented on streaming. Thanks for this video, stream DLS!!! RIP Dave
I was in 9th grade when I bought this album. I had listened to the early days of hip-hop, Slick Rick, Grandmaster Flash, Doug E Fresh…but this album. My mind was BLOWN. So many great tracks. One of a handful of albums that I could just hit play and not fast forward a single track. Takes me back to my days growing up. Thanks, De La for being the soundtrack of my high school years.
So I remember hearing "Me Myself and I" when I was growing up, it must have been in some show or something. I get that the video is above the group performing this song, and the album is something that escaped me for years. Honestly your videos in the prior "native tongues" scene reignited my love for de la soul and this era of hip hop, which in all honesty was part of the reason I got into it the first place. I remember seeing "Dave is dead" (apologies if I misquoted the hashtag) on twitter and clicking on it and seeing that it was "Trugoy aka "Dave," which you had literally mentioned in one of your videos. I kept thinking, imagine if the album "Three Feet High and Rising," and all others which you had mentioned, being blocked by weird sample restriction, had been available. Well today I opened Spotify and I saw on the new rap albums "Three Feet High and Rising." I was so happy and then I immediately felt a sense of "Fraud!" (which I hope I'm not alone in feels). I have to thank you for the videos you did before this, and hopefully the ones you do that follow, that cover these ever important music topics, and open a vast number of people to songs. I know I have expanded my mind. Oh and also I've seen the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heats Club Band" movie, so there's that. Forever thank you...
@justsomegames9207 they didn’t because they own their masters and they were able to get a good percentage of their revenue for streaming..all the samples were easy to clear and all the artists were super cooperative..read some articles about the process
@justsomegames9207 ur being a super hater and u should go take meds..it’s happening now and it’s how music evolves - ur completely discrediting whole genres..if the original artists are fine with it then there’s no need for u to be upset..now hop along to another channel that suits ur needs better
I had the honour of seeing Maseo give a masterclass discussion/Q&A at university (this would have literally been about 10 years ago now) and it was amazing just hearing him talk about being from that time, about growing up in the 70's, seeing his friends and his family get big, and it was a surreal experience. He talked about how it was him who convinced the other guys to sample Parliament for "Me, Myself & I" and they'd gone to a club, DJ played the original, saw everyone lose it, and that convinced them to do it. The most wholesome man you could ever meet.
I remember that one day where De La made all six albums free to download for like 48 hours. Copping that collection was one of my best-ever decisions, those AOI albums are underrated.

Did you have the album 3 with the djs?

I grabbed that. Glad it had the Best of and the Dilla album too. I want to get a copy of the whole Nike Run album not just that one track. Btw that was 9 yrs ago this month or very close to it.

RIP Dave!!!
I'm obsessed with your videos. You inspire me to do them myself
And let's appreciate Buhloone Mindstate! Dropped during a pivotal moment in hip hop back in '93 and was sadly overlooked. It's truly a masterpiece -- as the entire catalog. THANK YOU DAVE and Long Live De La!!!
YUP
1993 was at the APEX of the Golden Age of Hip Hop. Too too many dope artists putting out masterpiece albums, many got lost in the shuffle.
I'm so happy they're finally on streaming. Bittersweet that it took this long and Dave is gone. 😭. I'm thankful though, this group changed my life.
The timing of this video hits hard. I am however happy that we can from today stream this stuff again!!!
Thank you SO much for making this video! I truly enjoyed it! Much love! Miss you, Trugoy!
What do you mean by new versions of the songs, did they have to replace or delete particular samples or mixes?
from the recent NY Times article on the reissues:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Still, not everything could be cleared, or was worth the money to do so.
Happy De La Day Y'all! RIP Dove. Thanks for the vid.
So glad this is finally on streaming!! Thanks for the great video bshaw! Amazing as always! And im listening to 3ft high and rising right now :D
spotify's AI DJ actually played a song off 3 feet high and rising for me this morning on my way to school. if i hadn't been put onto that song, i wouldn't be watching this video. i'm gonna listen to the whole album on my way back home
On repeat this weekend and forever. Great video and tribute. Love your animation and editing.
Thank you so much for highlighting this. I've been waiting for their discography to be on Spotify for a decade!
Thank you. I needed this one. Loving your work - your channel is quickly becoming my favourite music channel. Keep it up! RIP Trugoy…
Really well-made video. One nitpick: Licensed to Ill was a commercial smash that was also heavily sample-based, including rock samples
my 80's hip hop playlist is now complete - great video, thanks
There is no better time in my estimation than the times we are in for the positive messages from Da La Soul!
Rest in peace Dave
The world needs more hip hop like this.
Love this channel. Very well done. Also love how Spotify had a notification about De La Soul’s rerelease too 🔥
This video is worthy of the group and of their incredible work, which is no small feat… and rising. 😊 Thank you!
Another Super Terrific video and one that is Perfectly timed with their music openly getting back out into the world today!!!🙌🏼🎉👍🏼
The very first concert I saw in LA once I moved there from NC in the fall of 1996 was the Goodie Mob, De La Soul, and Fishbone at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip.
Rip Dave 😢 So stoked these are finally on digital!
Listened to this album today. I have been so hyped for months for De La Day. This Album is amazing, best part is the concept.
Great timing! I tried looking for their music on the Amazon music streaming app a month ago but couldn't find anything and now this video comes out and now I can finally hear their music that I grew up on🙏💪🏼
Such a great channel, great content 🔥
Great vid on this topic, I appreciate it. I actually heard 3 feet for the first time today and could tell it was groundbreaking at first listen. Folks in the hip hop community have been touting the re-release of De La's discography for a bit of time now, and I'm glad I heeded their recommendation. I'll continue to listen, as I know there will be more goodness from them I haven't experienced yet. Thanks again for the vid. ✌🏾
It was so fresh to a UK small town kid ....I've got a smile from ear to ear ...
It never fails to make me smile
Good video! So glad their music is finally available for streaming. I had the 3 feet high and rising and De Soul is dead on tape back in the day. Haven't listened to those albums in a long time.
Another excellent video. De La is such a important group in Hip Hop its amazing to see their catalog finally on streaming services. RIP Dave.
Your videos are of such high quality. Thank you, brother - and keep going! Wishing you every success.
RIP Dave 🙏🕊️
This is put together very nicely, new sub here!! Love De La Soul!! RIP Plug 2.
I was 17 when 3 feet came out. My brother had it on cassette and I remember listening to it over and over, it was so unique and strange at times but I couldn’t stop listening. Truly in the top 5 greatest hip hop albums EVER. RIP Dave.
How Exciting! One of the early comments/views! Love this Channel, Dude! Thanks for giving a big music nerd yet another obsession!
ALSO... didn't know De La Soul wasn't on streaming!
Great video man! New subscriber, really digging how you put this together.
I also have De La Soul is Dead and enjoyed that tape as well…it’s sad all of the other stuff about their deal and music was going on…had no clue it was being held up like this… I use to look for these albums years later and wonder why I can’t find them…
Also equally sad that Trugoy is not around to see their music library released…my heart broke at the news…I still don’t want to believe tho.. ❤️😩🙏🏽
But I’m so grateful for all the De La was giving us in entertainment…I will always be a fan.
So happy that they released this album and happy I got the last vinyl copy at my record store today!
legit cried when I saw then on streaming. thanks for the awesome video once again fam
Just got Stakes is High on vinyl, it sounds awesome. Can’t wait to get them all. Great video
Fortunately, I have bought this CD album back in the days and now I still have it in my collection 🕺
R.I.P. Trugoy
Rest Easy Dave 🙏🏽 My Condolences & Prayers of Strength & Comfort to your Family, Friends, Loved One’s & Fans who are grieving & miss you.
Thank you for this video!!!! De La Day is in full effect!!!! Keep up the good work!!!!!
I've been streaming De La Soul all day. Happy De La Freedom Day! 🌼🌼🌼RIP Dave🕊
I was introduced to De La Soul by an old Co worker, he gave me a cd copy of "The Grind Date". I then looked on Spotify and was so upset that de la soul wasn't represented on streaming. Thanks for this video, stream DLS!!! RIP Dave
RIP Dave 🕊
So happy we get to hear their music once more, but it feels bittersweet
I was in 9th grade when I bought this album. I had listened to the early days of hip-hop, Slick Rick, Grandmaster Flash, Doug E Fresh…but this album. My mind was BLOWN. So many great tracks. One of a handful of albums that I could just hit play and not fast forward a single track. Takes me back to my days growing up. Thanks, De La for being the soundtrack of my high school years.
Appreciate the history recap. De La Soul is Dead is one of my favorite albums of all time. Glad to see their early catalog accessible to new fans
@justsomegames9207 sure buddy..have fun w that thought
I grew up in the 90s in a lil town (Palmerston North,New Zealand) & listened to De La Soul. THATS the reach influence & legacy of DLS & Hip hop.
I've been sharing your videos with everyone I know man -- so good! Keep it up^^
Thank you, I was wondering why I could never find this album. I am so happy this album is finally ready to stream!!
