This channel isn't a Gold Mine it's a Diamond mine! The high production, the incredible editing, the camera quality, and best of all the Impeccable narrator. Here in the US I actually bought the "I Feel Fine'"/"She's a Woman" picture disk from the local pharmacy when I was 14. I had no clue there was a whole collection of them. I also bought Sgt. Pepper's picture disk from the same pharmacy, It looks just like the one you have over your left shoulder.

I bought "Love Me Do" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" when they came out cause it was the first time I ever came across picture discs and they looked amazing...I recently played them and they still retain their wonderful sound...Compared to other picture discs I've obtained over the years these are of a much higher manufacturing quality...

I've often wondered how picture discs are made and why it is often said the sound quality isn't as good. Thanks for answering my questions and for this fascinating look at the Beatles picture disc 45s. I remember seeing the Love Me Do picture disc in the shops back in 82 (and occasionally for a few years after), but never felt compelled to buy it.

It was nice to be able to buy these and get real feel of the time line between each release as it would have been in the 60s. Still have 'em but as you point out they have never been played. Keep them coming Andrew your vids are brilliant.

As usual Andrew your research is second to none. I've just checked my Love Me Do picture disc - the only one I own - and Orelake is indeed stamped on the dead wax . The sound quality is v slightly muddier than my Love Me Do single from the blue box collection but still sounds great.

Damn it Andrew you never fail to bring joy and entertainment. Didn’t expect to be wowed at anything here, since it’s just picture discs. However, their sources and the process of making one actually got me inclined to want to own at least one of them. Very interesting that they used album masters for some of these instead of the regular single sources. I would’ve loved to pick em up, but the picture sacrifices the sound for such a pretty visual. Oh well, Splendid job as per usual, Andrew!

Another great one Andrew👍 I bought them as they came out in the 80s from my local record shop in Leeds. Enjoyed the idea of having contemporary released Beatles singles. Mine still have the stickers with my ‘reserved for Nigel’ on them!

Thanks very much for making this document video. These discs were nearly forgotten to me after all these years. In America, I don't know if they were much of an issue, more a pleasant curiosity. It seems the reissue series never went beyond "Love Me Do" over here, sadly. However, knowing the network of local Beatles' collectors, I knew they existed and I also read updates in GOLDMINE magazine. Still, nothing compares to the way you have presented them here. Much sincere thanks.

I did manage to collect all of these as they came out (more or less). I think, unless my memory is failing, that they became a little hard to find towards the end. I know that by 1990 when my set should have been complete, I was missing just one record (it may have been 'The Ballad of John & Yoko', but I'm not 100% sure). Fortunately, I managed to find it (without actually looking for it) in a record shop in Dublin in 1991. I will have to revisit these following this excellent video, as I've always dismissed them (in audio terms) because of their excessive surface noise, and I've not paid attention to other aspects of their sound quality. Sometimes, for me, videos like this one can helpfully reveal worthwhile features (that I've missed or forgotten) of what I've got in my collection. Thank you.

I bought the box set of the 1982 UK singles for the picture sleeves. And the first pic disc, Love Me Do, came with that set. That's when I found out I would have to wait seven years before collecting all the picture discs, because each was released on their 20th Anniversary date. Note: most of the sleeves in the box set didn't have photos on the back sides, but the pic discs did.

I was a very young music- and chart-watcher when the reissue of "Love Me Do" came out. I had thought it was part of an attempt to fill up the gaps in the Beatles' no. 1 hits run, hence "Please Please Me" following it up. I had no idea this was a long-running picture disc series - even into the late 80s when I was able to buy more serious music in greater numbers, and had access to the music press and Teletext. There was no publicity or displays at all for the later discs. I wonder whether they had become mail order?

I did not know “Love Me Do” was re-released in 1982 and became a hit in the UK all over again. It never appeared on the US charts again while oldies station at the time played “Love Me Do” in 1982. There were a few songs that were from the 1950’s and 1960’s that became hits all over again, including “Stand By Me” by Ben E King in 1961, and then re-released in 1986 for the movie of the same name, the Beatles “Twist & Shout” was first released in 1964, and then re-released in 1985 for the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, Louis Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World” was first released in 1967, and then re-released in 1988 for the movie “Good Morning Vietnam”, and the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody” was first released in 1965, and then re-released in 1990 for the movie “Ghost”.

    Hi Andrew,
    Great video.
Yeah picture discs are certainly a love it or hate it type collector piece. The 80's saw terrible quality picture discs..I own ones by Rush. .David Bowie and Marillion. ..they are not good. ..one is almost unlistenable.
I'm sure most of the 80's Beatles ones would fall in that category.
The good news is that picture disc quality is greatly improved of late. The 7" of Yellow Submarine and the 12" of Sgt. Peppers are fantastic. ..so no worries with new picture discs...the new David Bowie picture discs are excellent. Oh and there is a pressing company here in Toronto that are doing amazing things with picture discs...they sound as good...sometimes better then normal records. I'm curious to see if these catch on.
Anyways thanks for another great video. Hope you and the family are doing well.

I had always assumed picture discs weren't the greatest, sound-quality wise. The only Beatles picture disc I've come across was a Sgt. Pepper LP that I found when I was in university, then gave it to my brother who was an even bigger Beatles fan than I was. We never played it, we put it in a frame, so I have no idea if it sounded good or bad. :)

It was an odd choice to have a picture with Yoko on the b-side to The Ballad Of John And Yoko. It would have made sense to have that on the a-side and the other photo on the Old Brown Shoe side. Otherwise, I think they did a great job with selecting images for each record.

Andy , did you ever go to the SRT factory in St. ives , Cambs? ….I got invited twice to have a look around and have a buying session when I had my shop. Their walls were festooned with picture disc mishaps , wrong titles , torn but still pressed pictures , all sorts of mispressings, uncut shaped discs etc.
Then just before the finally shut (relocated?) Karen invited me to buy/take 100’s of master tapes that I know ended up in a big skip , I just had nowhere to have stored this huge bulk and of course have since learnt these would have been mostly 2 inch tapes and unplayable on a “normal” domestic reel tape machine .
I’ve mentally kicked myself over the years for letting them pass me by , but then wasn’t now , digital was the future as far as the eye could see back then and who wanted to save analogue master tapes right?…doh!

Have you heard the most recent remixes (in the Super Deluxe sets) and do you enjoy them? Or do you have any interest in them at all? This may be utter blasphemy to say on a channel like this but I love them and I hope they remix every single Beatles album in a similar fashion. 😂

The picture disc method of manufacture let me to thinking of CD's ....
Hear me out ..... I had a CD of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" which had been stored in the car. The label side had bubbled and flaked and it all came away. However, the disc still played, I just had to take car which way up I inserted it. The silver playing surface was obviously sandwiched between the resin.
I also had a CD of The Beatles "1" album stored in the same way. The label side had also bubbled and flaked off BUT this disc had the silver playing surface as the underside of the label (not sandwiched at all) and the resin was clear where the label had flaked. Obviously it was only of use as a drinks coaster from then on.

I don’t have a complete set but I do have many of these. There are a few problems with them. Many second hand picture discs are in bad shape due to the way they were displayed by the previous owners. Images faded & warped vinyl from being on somebody’s wall. I worked in a shop where we had dozens of these suspended from the ceiling with fishing line-they looked awesome but exposure to dust & UV lights took their toll. Another thing to consider is the clear PVC jackets these were sold in. It’s debated, but many claim vinyl can be damaged from a chemical breakdown when kept in the hard plastic sleeves. I think they are still fun to collect, & a fascinating look at the way the Beatles marketing has evolved over the years. Some of these discs look more “dated” than, say, their ‘60s Capitol counterparts-very ‘80s.

That is really cool, I am myself trying to build a singles collection from $0.50-$2 Bargain bin thrift store finds simply because well played singles don't bother me and I would prefer I take them and use them than someone buy them just to cut up for an art project or throw around like a frisbee.
So far I have Let it be, Elanor Rigby, If I fell, Ob-la-Di, Ob-La-Da, and We can work it out. Actually Let it be came from the second time I ever got any 45's (The first was a copy of Crazy Little Thing Called Love I found in a Value Village) when my aunt had me help her catalog her collection of Vinyl and let me take a few items I wanted as payment for my help.

Lol ahem…today I meticulously boxed the whole set up ready to sell on Ebay….cheaply I might add, but had to undo to look for the strawberry fields rare one, also on several I noticed the centre has started delaminating, surprised as hell about using quality recordings although they do sound pretty chunky

Thanks for the video Andrew. Those PVC sleeves are not good for the records. They can leave an unremovable film over time especially when kept in warm conditions. The picture discs are themselves are sure a cool collectable nonetheless.

I noticed the subject of the 12" black vinyl "All you need is love" came up- so "All you need is love" is a nice full stereo mix, but "Baby..." is in that horrible Capitol fake stereo that sounds like one ear hasn't cleared up from your flight! And there exists an American early 70s Apple single with "Baby.." as an A side with the full Apple! Mono of course.

It’s crazy seeing these being released as they were originally but 20 years later. Love Me Do seems completely dated and out of place being released in 82, as for the 63 to 65 releases. As the 66 releases started, it didn’t seem as dated and by Hey Jude onward the music sounds like it could have came from 80s technology.
It just shows how incredibly fast The Beatles and 60s music grew, and how by the 80s mainstream music was out of groundbreaking ideas.
