There was a really smart girl at my school that killed herself after she got a failing grade on one of her midterm exams. Apparently, she calculated the impact of the grade on her GPA and determined that her probability of getting into Harvard was gone. So she wrote a suicide note to her family and the school, then took a bunch of pills and died. My reason for sharing that story is that a lot of smart people can have irrational breakdowns that lead to very dangerous behavior due to a lack of coping skills. This kid probably calculated his savings vs the compounding interest on the debt and determined that he would never be able to pay the debt off and still save for retirement. He never considered asking anyone for help or even check if there was an error with the app because he was likely in too much of a panic.
Honestly man not to be a dick or anything but I hate people who cry over a failed test. If she was in my school for high school she would be the most hated person.
Yea most likely he's having life problems that we dont know of that made him to not think to call the company to ask what the debt is and how he got it, but instead when he saw that debt right then and there he thought to himself, 'well, might as well do it now' theres so much to this that we dont know. Rip my guy
What do you mean where his money went? It's an investment app. That dollar amount changes constantly. That's what trading is. Its plausible to believe that whatever stocks he had invested in had crashed and plummeted. I'm sure he may have had other issues but imagine being young and thinking you not only lost all your and your family's savings, but now OWE almost a million dollars? He may have thought that by ending his life he was saving his family from debt. I have been in such a poor financial state that I have considered suicide. This is completely plausible story at face value.

@@PanzerTank_ it’s sad you’re right, but that is different than this situation.

Yea most likely he's having life problems that we dont know of that made him to not think to call the company to ask what the debt is and how he got it, but instead when he saw that debt right then and there he thought to himself, 'well, might as well do it now' theres so much to this that we dont know. Rip my guy
Kyle true. Rest in peace 🙁

@bob morane Not how that works.
@bob morane How old are you..?
If your balance ia negative, it means you owe that amount to that person/bank.
@bob morane buying on margin which a lot of day traders do its essentially buying on credit at the beginning of the day and selling at the end so if you buy 1k shares on credit and the stock goes up a dollar you keep 1k at the end of the day if it goes down you owe 1k at the end of the day. never buy on margin or credit that is what I was always taught

I had a similar experience with Robinhood when it crashed for the 2-3 days. People commenting don’t understand what it’s like when your money is on the line like that. Especially when you’re poor and that’s your only way out of your situation.
I think you are making a fair point but I also think a lot of the responsibility falls on the user. Trading is a very complicated and risky business.
